Bal d'Afrique

LOVE LOVE LOVE... This is the first perfume EVER (in the 40 years of my life and the probably 25 years I'm using perfumes), which I bought on the same day of smelling it for the first time... the first time ever that a recommendation of a shop assistant was spot on.... and the first time, a perfume became my signature scent straight away. I smelled it and it was just... me. I was on a lunch break hunt for new scents and had a chat in the shop about my current favorites (normally fresh white flowers with a green touch, since recently also more woody and deeper/more masculine scents, but never too powdery, makes me cough)... The assistant showed me Bal d'Afrique... I smelled it for the first time... and went "Mmmmmh!" immediately... not like oftentimes, when you politely answer "Yes, nice..." or "Mhm, not bad..." to those awful scents some of the shop assistants are recommending, with the words "I like it very much myself!" or "This is very popular!". No, Bal d'Afrique has a wonderfully fresh citrus/orange/bergamot blast in the beginning, interlaced with a delicious fruit (must be the blackcurrant), never getting sickly sweet, never acidly citric (you know... like the times when you have to sneeze from all the citrus)... just a wonderful balance between all components... while a faint smokey touch is hovering at the scent's edges. This initial richness of juicy fruits lasts about 20 minutes on my skin and then fades a little, becoming warmer with amber, musk and cedar. The smokey touch also gets a little stronger, but never becomes disgusting (non-smoker writing here). The only "drop of bitterness" in this luscious composition is... longevity is only moderate... after 2-3 hours I barely can smell it anymore on myself. Be prepared to always take it with you to refreshen it after some time, because you just can't live without it. Sillage is weak, so it's very office friendly and wearable too. Bal d'Afrique is like nothing I've ever smelled before. The scent invokes a feeling of the zest for life and indulging in its pleasures, while the deeper - and sometimes smokey - layers of your experience of life are always present in the background... not disturbing the present, but also never being forgotten. The picture of a unique life.

If you have a nose that enjoys many masculine fragrances, but then you pick up highly unpleasant notes from the woody notes at dry down, this is a fragrance that will likely work for you even though Fragrantica lists the woody accord as most prominent. This is an excellent fragrance for warmer weather. I prefer Imagination over this, but they both have that clean ozonic fresh vibe and present as a light airy scent profile that has far more similarities than their accords would suggest. Most importantly, for those with woody note sensitivities, this fragrance dries down with no off-putting woody notes. I'm a newb to fragrances. I'm an older man. My wife and I sampled over 200 popular fragrances in a short period of time as a fun experience using mostly decants at home where we could enjoy the full experience of each fragrance over a length of time. It became obvious that most masculine fragrances can be sorted into a small number of categories of broadly similar profiles. I don't mean they are the same by this statement. When I first sampled a decant of Imagination, I immediately recognized it as being in a unique category. My eyes literally widened, I sat up straight, and said outloud, "Oh wow!" It broke into new territory from our many samples. Bal d' Afrique to my nose fits this same rare airy category of scents. I think it will be non-offensive to most everyone, so a perfect office scent and perfect for warm weather events. If you want to present as light, airy, clean and fresh, you will likely appreciate this fragrance. For those that perceive this fragrance as a nothingburger, I have empathy, because I'm on the opposite side of the same coin and detect acrid smells in fragrances most do not. Olfactory perception is incredibly subjective, which sometimes begs the question why we even read and write reviews. If you prefer stronger scents, may I suggest Amouage Badlands or the clone Rayhaan Terra. Those are two scents that are nuclear with no unpleasant notes.

Such a beautiful, soft, and radiant fragrance. I've had decants of BdA for well over a decade now, but have never purchased a full bottle. I know, im dumb. All that money that I've spent on 10mL decants of this, I could've purchased a full bottle with. I plan to. BdA is one of my "safest" fragrances out of my collection. It works anytime, anyday, anywhere. It's such a pleasant scent, in the same vein as Another 13, which is another fragrance that i genuinely adore. BdA sits right down in the middle of unisex. Maybe borderline feminine (again, the same as Another 13), which is not a problem for me. I like my hyper masculine fragrances like Boss Bottled Absolu, which sits so well on my skin. But luckily for me, more unisex - feminine leaning frags also sit incredibly well on my skin (I lucked out lol). On my skin, BdA comes off a tad more masculine, really pushing out that vetiver and cedar. Despite not being denoted in the note(s) breakdown, BdA is also quite musky. For me at least. It's a pleasant, soft musk that's like a hug. It's quite beautiful. Performance is pretty great. No, it's not beast mode, but that's not BdA is trying to be. It's a more intimate, gentle fragrance that implores you to sit closer. Longevity is also excellent. On clothes, it can last for over 2 days. If you like softer unisex fragrances like Another 13 and Gris Charnel, you will LOVE BdA. I do need to get my nose on the absolu flanker as I've heard that bumps up the intensity a notch. Until then, I'll continue to enjoy what I already have. Full bottle to come VERY soon.

Bal d'Afrique has haunted me ever since I first sampled it years ago. I was never all that into this kind of scent-profile, but there was just something about it that gave me life. On me it's all creamy, non-acidic, sweet lemon, vetiver and musk. Recently I sampled it once more. And I have thoughts. I am way more into these sorts of scents now that I was in the past. I used to think that there was no point in owning a perfume unless it was dark, deep and HEAVY - because if I wanted something skin-like (skin doesn't smell like lemon and marigold, I know, but I'm trying my best here), why not just... not wear any fragrance at all? But now... NOW. Now I find myself gravitating towards the likes of Glossier You, Another 13, and this (personal growth, we love to see it). Now I find that there is something so sexy about a fragrance that doesn't try to be sexy. And Bal d'Afrique doesn't try, it just IS. And it doesn't know just how appealing it is - which is just so charming, isn't it? What I'm TRYING to say with this word-vomity wall of text is this: Bal d'Afrique is gorgeous in a carefree, quietly luxurious way. You know how perfumes can put you in a certain mood? You spritz it on, and think "okay, life doesn't suck THAT bad". Bal d'Afrique makes my monkey-brain go "heh. I love my life". It's my ultimate "no thoughts just vibes" fragrance, and as someone who is prone to overthinking and having "neurosis" as my baseline on the daily, I mean this as a compliment of the highest degree. And for these vibes, I am willing to pay the (ungodly) price :)

Волшебно! Я заказала пробник этого аромата, из интереса. Мне хотелось что-то лёгкое, воздушное и не приторное, и мои ожидания оправдались! Аромат очень нежный, я была уверена, что в составе есть кокос, настолько он вызвал у меня ассоциации с конфетами Рафаэлло с добавлением лёгкой цитрусовой кислинки! Я реально удивилась, обнаружив, что кокоса в составе нет :-) Верхние ноты более цитрусовые и сладкие, потом они сменяются на более душистые. аромат идеально сбалансирован, ни одна нота не перекрикивает другую, наверно, проще всего его назвать сливочно-цитрусовым, но на самом деле он настолько цельный, что его не хочется разбирать на части. Мне он сразу же поднял настроение, подумала, что " хочу с ним подружиться" , такой он какой-то добрый, нежный и при этом не приторно-хищный. Кто-то написал, что этот аромат вызывает ощущение безопасности, вот мне тоже так кажется. Из минусов - да, не очень стойкий, сидит близко к коже, но это реально единственный минус, на мой взгляд. Интересно было бы попробовать африканский бал абсолют, но пишут, что он более приторный. В общем, аромат прекрасный, определенно женский, воздушный, деликатный, сладкий, но не приторный, свежий, держится не очень долго, но всё равно замечательный. :-)

It’s a clean, airy fragrance that doesn’t tire your nose at all. The kind of scent that makes you want to keep smelling it. Very smooth and easy to wear. It never feels overwhelming. It works really well for the office and everyday life, especially in indoor spaces. I also like the Absolu version, but this one feels much more balanced. In the Absolu, the citrus and sweetness hit a bit sharper, while this version is softer and more universally appealing. I usually get compliments when I wear it. For some reason, it gives me a similar balance and cheerful vibe to Gris Charnel. Both feel quite unique and a bit hard to fully describe, balanced, fresh, airy, slightly sweet, and just a little smoky in a pleasant way. It’s very easy to wear. Creamy, floral, gentle, and fresh all at the same time. A truly safe choice and honestly a great unisex scent. Performance is average. I can notice it for about 4–5 hours, then it slowly fades. For the price, I expected a bit more longevity. Overall, it feels clean, airy, soft, fresh, and lively. You can wear it in all seasons, but it becomes a bit quieter in winter. In colder weather, it works best indoors or in office settings.

UPDATE (1/18/26): After wearing this a few times, I am sad to say that it eventually fades to a baby wipe / baby shampoo kind of smell. It's not offensive, but when you smell baby wipes you don't immediately think of luxury perfume - if anything you think of baby poo... so that's great :( I'm still going to wear it because I have it, but probably not out to any events where I need to make a good first impression. ORIGINAL REVIEW (1/3/26): I found this fragrance through chance. I don’t follow any “influencers” on social media media, I don’t keep up with brands, etc. so I didn’t find it through any kind of “hype.” It was just happenstance. To me, this feels like a luxurious, ultra-modern hotel in the best way possible. It’s not a scent I’d normally go for based on notes alone, but it evokes such a specific emotion, landscape, tone, something... It’s even better layered over a plain vanilla note just to add a little more sweetness to balance out the sharp citrus. Anyway. I feel rich when I wear this.

My signature scent. I'm on my second bottle of this in three years. On a conscious note, I wear it as a signature scent because I pass people often. As such, I have enough proximity to radiate the frag. But the real reason I wear this scent is for me. It is so pleasing to my nose and hits everything I want out of a niche fragrance. Not doing a lot, yet doing everything its doing differentIy, without replication. I believe the joy of Byredo is that they do not have a lot accurate dupes. So you live among their scents like a small community, knowing there aren't many outsiders. With that being said, the performance is an absolute joke considering the price. If you are looking for strong performing scents, get the lotion instead of the fragrance. If I wasn't a self-indulging slave to this scent profile, I wouldn't buy it. But it has a piece of me.

I’ve got some thoughts about this. First, among my collection, this rates high in wearability. I lean more niche and this is one of my most crowd pleaser fragrances. Doesn’t diminish its worth in my eyes, but it is an easy wear for times I don’t want to think to much about my fragrance. A summer no brainer. For notes: super well blended, no overwhelming notes. Except for pineapple! For some reason I get super strong juicy pineapple which is never listed on any website. For mood / vibe. I don’t get africa nor Paris but I don’t mind it so much. It’s a strong name and a poetic scent which is enough for me. My only qualms with this is performance. For an EDP it’s pretty weak and for the price point I’m a bit annoyed at the lastingness and projection. I got it for free but would no purchase.

I think this is a nice, warm, bright but luxurious scent. You can pick up on the citrus and marigold immediately, but it’s tempered nicely with the violet, vertices, and eventual sandalwood. This is a very non offensive scent that screams luxury. On my skin this surprisingly projects very loud so I can’t wear it to the office, but it’s a scent I gravitate to whenever I want to feel bubbly, energized, and feel luxurious. It also lasts very long on me, several times I’ve put it on in the morning but can still smell it after I workout and shower in the evening. I’m usually a gourmand girly, but this is a nice change from that. It’s more of a sweet clean scent. (Also pairs very well with vanilla scents if you want to shift it into something more gourmand and sweet).

Best blind buy ever, I was super skeptical at first, honestly only bought it bc I wanted to buy a byredo fragrance for my collection and it was on sale, I chose Bal D’Afrique bc I still wanted to somehow “play it safe” (buying the mose popular one from this brand), and I was left completely speechless when I tried this fragrance for the first time!! On me is super complex, sometimes the violet peaks through the most and it leads more feminine, sometimes the bergamot and cedar are the most prominent notes and then it leads more masculine so I chose to vote for unisex, longevity in around 6h, honestly perfect for me!! I don’t regret one cent spent on this perfume and I hope my byredo collection will get bigger in the near future☺️☺️☺️

I truly love this - nothing like it in my collection. I find it hard to put my finger on the individual notes. To me, it's slightly creamy - but like a lotion, not like an actual milkiness. Creamy, lemony and sweetly, lightly herbal. It's never overwhelming either. My only issue is the longevity is so poor. Sometimes it lasts more on some days than others, but I find it's usually disappeared after half an hour. I always planned on repurchasing, but since finishing my bottle, I'm not sure I will. I wasn't too keen on the absolu, but may revisit that. Overall - a wonderful, unique, elegant, cool perfume. Just doesn't last long enough.

fruity citrus clean luxury hotel sheets with violet & florals scented cleaners.. i really can’t describe the smell well enough but know its magical With the edp it has the base of vetiver and its very apparent. It has smokey woody slightly earthy scent thats slowly coming forward during the lifetime of the perfume which is sadly very short (3hrs-ish) I strongly disagree with people who claim that the edp is now obsolete that absolu is out. Both have different bases that heavily influence scent profile. And the longevity isn’t really an issue you can always carry a decant and reapply. Or get the whole line of shower gel and lotions

This fragrance is just a pleasure to wear. I love my fresh/clean/powdery/straight out of the shower scents, and Bal d'Afrique covers all bases. I would usually stay away from anything that is too woody, but the woody and earthy notes - think freshly cut grass - are subtle, yet punchy on initial sniff. It all dries down to a soft (but not too soft) and elegant (but not pretentious or over-the-top elegant) earthy, clean scent. Long-lasting - can smell it on me all day. Quite a unique fragrance that ticks a lot of boxes. It also relaxes me. Must be the combinations of those fresh, powdery and earthy notes. A new favourite.

I think this is beautiful. Citrus, creamy, floral and warm. Smells like a luxurious packing box? Very unique but not offensive. Smells like warm sunshine in a bottle, like a time in life you were happy that you can't pin down. Clean and woody, citrus and creamy, a little floral. Smells like a woman who has her life together. She wears shades of brown and yellow, has a book club where they read new age feminism books, and her cat is very well behaved. Lasts long as on clothes, until you wash them, but it doesn't project much after 3-4 hours. I don't know why I'm getting coconut somehow? Maybe coconut milk?

I wore this one day (shortly after just purchasing it for the first time) & all throughout the day I kept thinking that I was wearing “Sel Oceane” by Le Monde Gourmand because I could swear that’s what I was smelling! They smell so so similar to me (on me?) I was sort of mad because I could’ve saved my money & just kept wearing the LMG fragrance. lol They of course do not smell identical but it’s pretty damn close even though they share exactly zero notes. So now I just wear them together. Does anyone else feel this way about these two fragrances or is it just me?

A pretty brunette who lives in a modern apartment decorated in a minimalist style with some houseplants. She drinks green smoothies and goes to yoga and dabbles in "spiritual" things. She doesn't wear much makeup because she doesn't need to. At home her hair is usually in a messy bun (that always looks perfect). She's generally well put together and has her life in order, and doesn't stress out too much. She's a calm, nice person who likes to spend time outside in the sunshine. Her color season is spring. I would buy a full bottle if I weren't so poor.

I am a parfume enthusiast in my 40-s with around 50 fragrances...everybody's talking about bal d'afrique absolu as better and more worthy fragrance.but for me this is the real gem of fragrances.... This version feels more polished,unique,fresher,maybe more feminine but not so much that a man can't wear it. Absolu is darker,stronger,more masculine,but i feel that it is not so unique because it has that similar designer vibe like armani stronger with you. Mostly i like the original's lightness,freshness and uniqueness.

That’s it? No seriously, i mean it’s nice. It’s clean. It’s easy. I was just expecting something a little less straightforward and a little more thought-provoking.. That’s it. That’s all i got. EDIT: I take it back. I’m embarrassed for being so blind to the beauty within the intricate simplicity of this scent. It’s exquisite and I love it. Like truly truly love it so much i can’t believe i ever spoke poorly of it. To be completely honest, my boyfriend’s skin works even better with it and i’m envious.

So SAVE YOUR MONEY. I am a super taster I can tell if there are 1:1 scent matches I can smell putrid molecules in scents that don't seem to bother most people but I can smell it a mile away. This is 1:1 Morrocan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner scent. I knew I recognized it instantly , the code is cracked. If you want this in a perfume ask Moroccan Oil to make the perfume. Frankly just wash your hair with this stuff you will smell it all day as will the people around you. Boom just saved you ducats.💥

One of the most beautiful perfumes I have ever smelled. I can smell a lot of lemon and some herbs, smoothness and creaminess. It is a sparkling and energizing scent, but at the same time so peaceful. Definitely unisex. It is a scent that a stranger woman on the street complimented me how nice I smelled. The longevity depends a lot on the humidity. I love this perfume in rainy weather, but it is suitable all year round. The price is just too high. Even so, I am already on my fourth bottle :-)

I love this fragrance; it truly smells unlike anything else I’ve tried. Just as the marketing suggests, it feels perfectly universal across all skin types and genders. It’s quiet and understated yet exudes high-end quality—it has that clean, sophisticated Stockholm vibe. While some call it a daily scent, I find it a bit too intense for the daytime. To me, it’s the ultimate "golden hour" fragrance, perfect for a dinner, a date, or drinks between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM.

Beautiful, fruity, fresh, soft, warm, uplifting. Its not in the listed notes, but I interpret it as a peach or mango peel scent. Something like a yellow fruit in a juicy slightly sweet but mostly fresh way. Summery. Golden. Slightly powdery but not cloying. Not too strong, stays close to the skin, which I like. Feels sophisticated, but not snobbish. Very elegant, but accessible. Modern. Unique but simple. Everyday wear. I could not get tired of this. I need it.

This fragrance is outside my usual comfort zone, but it genuinely surprised me. From the first wear, it delivers a feeling of vigor, freshness, and effortless positivity. Smells like freshly baked peach crumble. Wouldn't say the scent changes or evolves but wouldn't say that is a problem. Good longevity but spray more do it doesn't become a skin scent too quickly. Dies down to skin scent after about 5-6 hours. Not a feminine fragrance whatsoever, definitely unisex, however not a masculine fragrance, riding the fence there. Not the worst blind buy suggestion. Could definitely wear year round, just not in sweltering heat

This is a stand alone scent , no pairing needed. Subtle but long lasting, a moderate trail with refined elegance that is truly versatile. I get freshness blended with a creamy sweet finish. This is a gem, for men and women! I tried on at 9:30 am at 4:30pm someone at work complemented me , just casually walking by. Longevity about 7 hours, not loud but present , I get little whiffs of it during the day. Definitely in my top ten list !

Esse perfume grita “acabei de tomar banho”. É refrescante, “alegre”, perfeito pra ambientes profissionais ou em que se fica muito tempo parado. Nos primeiros minutos achei meio parecido com algo como um sabonete simples. Mas depois de alguns minutos na pele, passa a vibe de pessoa super limpa, tem um frescor bem grande, e cresceu positivamente pra mim. Peguei o decant e agora quero comprar pra usar no escritório. Tem um bom rastro.

Bal d'Afrique Is probably one of the best summer scents that I have smiled in my life. The perfume is very light and airy and radiant at the same time, and it smells like a mix of flowers/detergent/fruit shampoo in very good way with some light woods. The silage and projection on my skin are around 8 hours, and I usually do 8-12 sprays. The only bad thing about Bal d'Afrique in my opinion is the steep price.

Wow I was not expecting to love this as much as I do. I thought it would be overhyped, and it was too citrusy on the first application so I forgot about it until I kept smelling the most incredible scent, and realized it was bal d’Afrique! You don’t know if it’s musky or powdery or floral or fruity, but it’s simply intoxicating. Golden hour on clean skin. It’s so intimate and alluring. God I love this

This grew on me. I purchased a mini dabber about a year ago and forgot about it because when I first tried it I was underwhelmed. Wore it a few times over the course of a couple weeks recently and fell in love. It is beautiful and such a unique scent. Clean, floral, a little creamy, bright. Seasonless, and I would say more of an evening scent. Purchased full bottle after 3 wears. Love it.

This has quickly become my everyday scent. I don’t think anyone could hate it. It’s perfectly pleasant and light, like a balmy spring day. This is the ideal “clean girl” scent- airy, citrusy, and very slightly sweet. Today my student said to me “you smell like shower” which is exactly what I want from this perfume. I don’t smell like perfume, just very clean.

Great fragrance. I haven’t tested anything close to this, even though Boadicea and Sospiro seem to be quite close to it, according to the votes. It unlocks a deep childhood memory scent for me and it reminds me of my relative’s smell or baby’s diapers’ smell, I can’t decide which one. Great perfume, mid+ performance, overpriced.

My secret: layered this with Altair. It’s godly. I’ll keep it short and sweet. My nose is very picky with fresh fragrances and this one got the stamp of approval. Longevity: boooooo very poor Not going to repurchase bc of the price but I keep a little bit left in the bottle so I can still smell it from time to time.

My first association is a fruit-flavored milkshake. Sweet, sour, cold. No vetiver at all, at least in the first hour. I quite like the result, it's a literally attractive scent that is unusual enough to make you want to investigate its source. Not aggressively masculine, doesn't try to put hair on your chest.

If I could own only one fragrance it would be this one right here. Bal d'Afrique is a perfect blend fruitiness, sweetness, and florals making is wearable anytime and anywhere. This scent works for me in the cold too. It's definitely the fragrance I reach for the most and will eventually buy a second bottle.

This is an outstanding fragrance. It is a very fresh/clean scent. It is a great office scent. This is a very mass appealing scent. I'd definitely recommend trying. This is up there with my favorite fresh/clean scents along with Amouage's Reflection Man. This is something definitely worth checking out.

OMG This is a super good byredo frangrance because its safe blind buy and the scent profile is amazing and you can use it everyday i love the opening and drydown SUPER GOOD Byredo Fragrance Its a must buy Longevity 4-7 hours Projection 1-3 feet Overall ITS A WONDERFUL fragrance for me

My initial thoughts: floral but soap with a bubbly squeakiness without being harsh. Didn’t expect to love this as much as I do. It smells so clean in a bright way and it’s hard to fully explain. Bought a larger decant after running out of the sample because I couldn’t live without it.

Opening is a sweet, fresh citrus scent that reminds me of pineapple, dries down in a few hours to a woody, slightly musky scent. One of my favorite scents, however it’s quite expensive and i’d expect better longevity for the price. Perfect for spring/fall, but works for all seasons.

This is my signature scent & has been for a very long time! Everything about this fragrance is me. The subtle sweetness, the mystery, the uniqueness of it all speaks to me as a woman. I recently purchased the Absolu version & while it’s very nice, the OG is still my beloved #1.

I purchased a sample sized vial to try and it is love at first sniff for me. It is very fresh, clean and invigorating scent. Definitely inoffensive and would be a good choice to wear to an office. Lovely for spring and summer. I definitely will be purchasing a full bottle!

Received today sample and what i can say , it’s smells so good . 10/10 👍 For me it’s like creamy citrusy smell. Not too strong , i like a bit more stronger perfume but i think this one should be perfect for summer. A bit reminds me Initio Musk Therapy. 😍😍😍

I have Genre Parfums inspired by scent and it is beautiful. I haven't smelled the original but will get me a sample of it to see how close my dupe is to it. To me this scent has a beautiful dry down on my skin. I would consider this as an everyday scent.

Stunning, classy, chic, cool girl type of perfume. Fresh, floral, and a little woody touch. I have been wearing this & Gypsy Water back to back as daily scents when I don't want to smell too perfumey. So easy to wear with the perfect scent bubble. 10/10

Bal d’Afrique strikes a beautiful balance between brightness and softness. The citrus opening feels radiant, but never sharp, before it melts into a smooth, musky floral warmth. Clean, luminous and quietly elegant without ever becomingtoo much. Love. ❤️

This was not al "love at first sniff" for me, but the more I tried it, the more I fell for it. Very earthy, but not so green or grassy. If you like earthy but don't typically like green fragrances (I don't), there's a good chance you will like this one.

Il me reste deux bouteilles pleines de l époque où le 100ml coutait 150€ je peux que comparer à la version actuelle qui coûte le double du prix a perdu toute sont onctuosité et de sa tenue quelle dommage comme la plupart des best seller malheureusement

It's amusing how Bal d'Afrique does everything right. The blend is perfect. The longevity was average on my skin. Someone mentioned it's boring, could be, but I want my girl to smell like this, very classy and nice.
