Gypsy Water

I think people might be partially anosmic too this, because I actually get mediocre performance from it. Not incredible, but certainly not abysmal. It lasts about 3 hours before becoming a skin scent. I needed to try this because I acquired a partial bottle of Fine'ry's Mysterious Nomad, not even realizing that it was a dupe of Gypsy Water. After testing this, I can say it's quite a decent one, but this has a more naturalistic feel to it. The needle-y smell of the green notes is more realistic and convincing. Is it worth the money? Maybe eventually for me, quite honestly, though it gives me a stomach ache to think of it because it is, absolutely, overpriced. The reasoning for me (and I'm usually a bargain hunting cheapo) is because this happens to evoke one of my favorite fragrant phenomena EVER. I'm from Washington State USA, which is resplendent with confers. In late September-mid October the trees shed an amount of needles/fronds (not all of them, it's still "evergreen" here). There's more dew than there is in summer, so the needles become wet overnight. During mid-morning-noon the sun beats down on the fallen needles, drying them, and produces a very specific, very unique, very precious sweet fragrance. Well, this somewhat (it can't be perfectly bottled) mimics that aroma, and it's beautiful. It's a delicate scent, which is fine, because the scent of fallen needles is ephemeral in early fall anyway. So I don't think of this fragrance as a masterpiece in it's own right, but I do love it because it happens to relate to something I adore in real life. If you're looking for an investment perfume, this probably isn't it. But if you at all understand what I'm talking about, have spent some time in boreal forests in autumn, and don't think it's psychotic, maybe it's worth it to you. 🍂🌲

I really like this perfume, but it smells different every time I wear it. The first time - wow! I LOVED the strong citrus at the beginning, and was disappointed when it disappeared after a few minutes (maybe seconds?). The past three or four wears, I haven't even gotten a hint of that original citrus that really intrigued me. I have gone so far as ordering a single note lime parfum base to layer with it - it hasn't arrived yet, but I'm excited to experiment with GW, because the bones for a really nice everyday scent are there. What I'm left with is a very soft, musky, warm, vanilla-sandalwood (thankfully not pickle-y at all, as a lot of sandalwoods go this way on me.) I like it and am experimenting with different bases to help it last, because without prep it lingers for maybe about 10 minutes on me. Today I used a very sticky, moisturizing lip mask on my wrists before applying and it seems like it's the most effective so far - I'm almost seven hours in and still enjoying it, though it is faint. Edit: I got my hands on a bottle of mysterious nomad, and it lasts much longer and smells stronger on me, even without my lip mask hack. Extremely similar in their profiles on my skin. I’m sort of anti-overt-dupe because it feels like a violation of artistic IP, but with this one they actually improve on GW in that it lasts dramatically longer and doesn’t have a slur in the name. It’s hard to justify paying $205 more when the OG is such a poor performer (I tried to make it work!) Byredo should step up their game when it comes to longevity, everyone has the same complaint. Excited to have a more potent, less expensive and less controversial version of this easy, pleasant perfume.

I love casual and down-to-earth scents which convey feeling of being outdoors, but many of them are so harsh and chemical. Gypsy Water is such a beautiful exception in this category. The scent is a natural, soft and creamy combination of woods and vanilla spiked with ever-green needles and juniper berries. It has a perfect balance of being casual but not boring, linear but not simple. Gypsy Water is my jeans and sweater companion to cuddle with on cold November nights. Lovely, easy to wear and natural, I could never go wrong wearing this scent. The lemon and bergamot opening makes me think of a windy day outdoors – refreshing and natural. Yet, right away, the warm rays of sandalwood and vanilla shine through the scent making it soft and comforting. The iris adds just a touch of powder and pine-tree and juniper berries keep the composition winter fresh. The scent has a bit of a linear quality but it does not bother me at all, as the composition is absolutely lovely. It is a soft scent, which makes it a great every day casual scent. And though it is quite light, it does lasts for hours. Gypsy Water is not the scent that will shock you with its super complex composition or fireworks of notes. But it is a scent that I will take with me on a winter skiing trip, a walk in the park or everyday at work. It was such a pleasure to wear that I finished my sample in no time and now craving for the full bottle. Overall score is 8.5/10

Oh my, now comes the review filled with childhood nostalgia. Skip it, if you are looking for a professional one. So, to start with that, for roughly 5 years I'm collecting a fragrance testers, 1-5 ml. It's like a small treat for me, like a piece of a dessert or a bucket of ice cream in the end of the day for some, so for me it's a couple of testers. Usually I choose frags I could afford a full bottle, if I liked so much. So that's the 1st reason I skipped Byredo for as long as I could - not in my price scope yet. 2nd - at some point they got very hyped, and I have kinda an allergy to that. When I got less emotional with that mainstream denial and for a long forgotten reason I picked exactly this - Gypsy Water. From the first sniff a scene appeared to me - 6 yo me, waiting for a dance class with my friend, she ate some waffles and offered one to me. That was a crispy waffle with layers of white lemon cream that smelled from a good distance (you know that chemical taste no adult would enjoy, but a heaven for kids). So that's it. Lemon and vanilla, I don't get much more from it, but it's enough. I wish I had a full bottle. Small trick - if you put a lime (squeeze some juice) in your water, then add a vanilla powder (only a smallest pinch surely) - and smell it/ drink it - you'll get exactly same smell in your glass.

I'm writing a second review because my new bottle of G Water is a beast! It's crazy, after personally experiencing the poor longevity and projection everyone in these comments keep referencing, I don't know if they updated the formulation, or what, but it's Amazing now! I sprayed two sprays on my wrists 4 and a half hours ago. It is still going strong. It has created a strong and beautiful scent bubble around me all day, and I can still easily smell it regularly in wafts through the air, rather than having to directly smell my wrists. I'm blown away. Yay! Hopefully this (new?) formulation sticks around. I have worn this new bottle multiple times now, and every time it's the same. Very happy. It's sweet, but not too sweet, and it's not an obvious vanilla or floral sweetness. It's hard to pinpoint the individual notes, which I appreciate - it leaves me wondering what exactly it is that i'm smelling all day. It feels like a new invention. If it's incense - what kind of incense is it? I get a faint coniferous smell, maybe. The only note I can really tell i'm smelling is the black pepper, and in the EDP it's very well-balanced. The absolu got way too peppery on me.

Love the smell of this fragrance. This is my second favourite Byredo, after bal d afrique. However absolutely agree about the lasting power of 10 min at most. May be the most sensitive noses can wear this fragrance... Even though I do prefer very soft fragrances that stay close to the skin, this one leaves some doubts, especially considering the price tag. Do try it before you invest. Update: I felt obliged to update my comment. As i was not fair in it. Yes, this fragrance has actually swept me away, replacing my signature scent of many years (caleche eau delicate). I was comparing it to serge lutens , amouage, montale perfumes when I said the scent does not last. The lasting power is actually quite long on me, not as bright as at first, but keeps well 12h. The scent does not change much over time, what makes it enjoyable from the start from as long as it lasts. Now, bal d afrique is the one that fades away quickly and does not rerun even as a hint. I bought both of the perfumes, love them both. But gypsy water is always winning over bal d afrique each time I reach for a perfume bottle. Endlessly beautiful!

Gypsy Water was the very first niche fragrance I added to my arsenal, and even after many years of growing my collection and trying out other scents, I continue to come back to it. I think this perfume is evergreen, no matter what is trending in the world of fragrance, this will always be lovely and stand on its own. Something about this will always feel like California to me. The type of winter morning where the moisture from the cool sea meets the warmer land and casts a cinematic haze in the air. The weather feels crisp outside but the sun begins to softly whisper its hello. It reminds me not just of the beautiful coast, with the rocks and cliff sides and the blues and sandy browns, but of the land, of the trees, of the plants and woods, and perfect air and breeze. I can’t help but smile when I wear it, because of my love for California, and for how it captures the feeling for it I can’t even describe. It’s like somehow they managed to bottle up the essence of this beautiful state, and for as long as I live, I will love it.

I remember the first time I smelt this. I bought it completely blind and I didn’t know what I expected. I absolutely loved it. I’ve repurchased it again so many times. It’s unique, I hadn’t smelt anything similar to it before or since. It smells like the finest, tastiest, freshest gin and tonic you’ve ever had, on warm spring day, sat in a botanical garden. The juniper takes centre stage, and lightly backed by herbal rosemary. The dry down is a much softer, woody scent but still keeps that freshness. If I could describe Gypsy Water in one word, it would be tasty. It smells beautifully delicious, but not typically gourmand. It smells like you could drink it, so fresh. The only disappointment with this, that I find with a few of Byredo’s softer fragrances, it doesn’t have great longevity. An hour or two and it has faded a lot. But this is still such a stunningly beautiful fragrance, I forgive it for its lack lustre lifespan.

Byredo Gypsy Water, in my opinion, is the best fragrance from the house. I’ve been wearing this beautiful scent ever since I discovered it 10 years ago through a very sophisticated person I worked with. It’s the kind of fragrance that makes you feel put together and ready to rule the world. It means business! Definitely for those who know what they want — and when they’ll get it. That kind of vibe! 10/10 💎 After I submitted my review, I read some of the reviews below, and I’m so surprised by people saying the fragrance goes unnoticed, is weak... or smells ‘lemony’?! What? I’m sorry, but like some others have pointed out, I’m afraid you may have bought counterfeit bottles — that’s the only explanation for those reviews. This fragrance is potent, incense-like, fresh, and very well blended. Plus, the projection is great, and it stays on clothing and hair until you wash them.

This is, in my opinion, the clear winner out of all Byredo perfumes. The juniper and pine opening lasts a long while and makes this fragrance absolutely unique and like nothing else on the market right now whilst keeping it friendly for everyday wear and generally nice and agreeable for most people's noses. It's extremely elegant and can be worn as a spring/summer signature easily. It's actually refreshing how versatile it is considering how unique it's scent profile is. It makes me feel as though I'm in the oasis in the middle of a desert, there's something vaguely summery and promising to it. It feels adventurous and mysterious in an approachable way. I also find it lasts over 8 hours despite not projecting loads. I'll definitely look into getting a full-sized bottle.

This is my very favourite perfume at the moment. I've wanted to buy it for a year but still haven't. I think the reason may be that if I ever feel a bit down, I just go to the perfume shop and try it on, sniff it, and instantly feel better. Another reason is that it's quite expensive, and I'm afraid it doesn't last long enough on the skin to justify the price tag. But I love, love, love the soft mix of powder, incense and vanilla. Big love. Gypsy Water is an unusual perfume, nothing like those from the big designer brands. Speaking of which, I think that the reason Byredo is my favourite perfume-brand at the moment is just that, their perfumes are quite different and often surprising. Not always nice on my skin, but never boring.

Wow I have really fallen in love with the fragrance in the past few weeks. We’ve had a heat wave where I live and G Water is the only fragrance I’ve been able to tolerate. I struggle not to take a deep breath, inhaling straight perfume, when I spray this on because it truly smells like a breath of fresh, cool air. To me this is a luxurious weekend spent in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest. Absolutely beautiful composition. Do I wish it lasted longer? Of course, especially for the price point but I will say that for me, on freshly moisturized skin, I can get about 4 hours of wear out of this one, still not great, but not terrible. It’s a trade off I’m willing to take for one of the most gorgeous scents I own.

I wanted this perfume for a long time and it's price point kept me from buying it, but I finally did and added it to my collection. It is a nice gentle fragrance that has very comforting powdered sugar smell with a hint of lemon. The scent is high quality, no alcohol or chemical detected upon spraying, but in order to have some longevity it requires quite a few sprays. For a niche fragrance at this price point, it really needs to last and project more. I do enjoy it, but I will not be repurchasing it sadly, only because the price point does not meet the performance.

When it comes to sandalwood-led perfumes, Gypsy Water is still the one I enjoy most. It feels fresh and aromatic, with a light peppery kick, dry woods, and a very clear pine-and-juniper freshness. The sandalwood itself reads as clean and balsamic. As it wears on, there’s a touch of incense, along with a green, almost unsweetened vanilla. That’s why it reminds me of Eau Duelle by Diptyque. They don’t smell the same, but they run along similar lines: Gypsy Water leans into woods and spice, while Eau Duelle does the same with vanilla.

This was one of the first byredos I owned and it’s also one of my favourites It’s perfect for casual and I really enjoy wearing it on a hot day while on a hike as it reacts well with my skin chemistry making it a pleasant experience to smell on a mountain it’s so fresh and refreshing and clean smelling. Sadly it doesn’t last very long and while o don’t mind a cheeky overspray or a top up of my fragrance for the cost I want it to last longer than it does. Will be interesting to smell what the absolu version brings in 2026

When I was a kid in the 80's, I had a Strawberry Shortcake Blow Kiss Baby Doll -- if you pushed the doll's tummy, it would blow you a scented kiss. My doll was Lemon Meringue, and her scented kiss smelled exactly like Byredo's Gypsy Water. I love it. I know it's a weird, random association, but I love this perfume, not only for the unexpected nostalgic flashback, but because the fragrance itself is so beautiful. The Strawberry Shortcake factory must have had an amazing perfumer to work with on their dolls! :-P

As a big lover of the fragrances of early 2000s, this is no exception. Absolutely beautiful, pleasant, perfect vanilla-woody (more vanilla-mossy though) scent, perfect for office, date, day, evening, sleeptime, sports, whatever. I have read the other reviews about the dissapointment of its longevity and sillage, and I can agree with that. For the price tag the performance is too weak. Though it has a potential to stay in my collection forever just because its too short life on the skin to get tired of it.

this is such an insane scent. its so complex you can smell it at first, after and hour, 2 hours etc just identifying different things. It smells weirdly like a fog machines liquid? Its so strange but good. Really genuinely feels like you're transported to a haunted mystic swamp in Louisiana theres no other way to describe it. I am in love with this scent. I normally am disappointed by 'cool girl' scents like Juliette has a gun's not a perfume or Le Labo's santal 33 but this scent deserves the hype.

I’m in the north woods on the dock of my family’s cabin, watching the waves come in. My grandpa is still alive, smoking a cigar and drinking a gin martini with a twist. My grandma is making lemon meringue pie when we come back inside. Grandpa brings in fresh wood for the fireplace. My cousins and I stay up late watching movies until the fire dies. This is so nostalgic to me. Spicy green opening, cozy vanilla dry down.

out of all of the colognes that I sampled recently, this is the one that hangs around the most. It's a beautiful blend of every ingredient and leaves. Nothing left to the imagination. The opening is very warm and mysterious, very musky. Just enoug sweetness coming through from the citrus to keep it going long-term. However, definitely a more intimate sent. Not a lot of projection. But, that is good enough for me.
