Mister Marvelous

This was my first bottle of Byredo, which I purchased back in August 2021. This is one of my all-time favorite fragrances, as it is so fresh and so versatile! I bought it right before starting uni, and now I'm entering my last year, which makes the scent even more special and memorable for me. I was surprised that this scent is seen as a more masculine scent, as I think it is strictly unisex. The citrus-notes work well for both genders in my opinion, and I have gotten several compliments on it. I don't think the wood notes are as prominent as the citrus/fresh green notes, but they are still there. An underrated perfume in my opinion!

There are a lot of harsh reviews here, something that I didn't expect when I sampled this at the Byredo booth blindly. The lady there told me it is their go to masculine offerings, which indeed it feels like, since this very much falls into the realm of the ever popular green citrus freshie. However I find this one oddly authentic for a Byredo, a brand that notoriously sells 80-100 euro scents for 200 euro, a practice very common in the designer market, but in the last decade, increasingly common in niche houses that are owned by larger companies like in the case of Byredo. FM, Tom Ford etc. Focusing on the scent, it is actually a realistic petitgrain scent, specifically capturing the rich mandarin leaf smell I grew up with, with a pleasant herbal undercurrent, a woody cedar-y iso e boosted core with a touch of musk. Decent longevity on my skin. Given petitgrain and cedar are cheap natural raw materials, I wouldn't be surprised if this is the most natural-packed Byredo in the entire line. Presented in a less banal bottle, at half the price, with a less ridiculous name I think this would have been a much more appreciated fragrance. Personally i think it is eclipsed by many more affordable petitgrain scents in the market e.g. Hermes Concentre d'Orange Verte, but I would nonetheless pick this up if I found it highly discounted.

Few perfumes hit you this hard with petitgrain in the opening, fizzy and citrus like but lacking in any sort of yesty refreshment. As Mister Marvelous settles down a bit it does get slightly pissy I'm afraid, but hey I can deal with that as I sort of find it interesting when it's not too dominant. I think the neroli coming through gives it a saving lift but the base is a peppery cedar which again doesn't help with the overall vibe of this perfume. Not something I'd wear I'm afraid, Byredo aren't doing particularly well in my favour being a house I hadn't tried until now. I don't hate it but put it this way, we can't talk longevity I'm afraid, because it got scrubbed.

This is a manly and "serious" type of scent for warm weather. The boss's kind of scent lol! At the opening I get a very strong citrusy vibe along with cedarwood and a little camphor. As time passes the petitgrain and the mild camphor calm down and the woods become dominant.. at this stage it feels gorgeous! Perfection in a bottle with a manly vibe. The neroli & the bamboo support the woods so they are not very vivid. The only minus is its moderate performance. I'll try it again to confirm its longevity which is very important for me. Update Moderate longevity confirmed. I love this simple scent but it lives somewhere between 4 - 4.5 hours..

Fresh, crisp and comforting. It reminds me of my dad and all those times we went to the woods. It's like a day in the pine forest. It's slightly cold already, you are wearing a woollen pullover and lighting a camp fire with pine cones. Needles to say, I like this perfume a lot. It works fine on me, even though it's kind of masculine. Maybe it's the memory it evokes that makes me like it. I get a strong coriander note in Mister Marvelous, even thought it's not listed.

A fresh, crisp and sharp synthetic note hits my nose after the initial spray. After I start recovering, I get neroli and lavender over a cedar base. Although it seemed very potent at first, after one hour it's faint on the skin and in 2 hours I can barely detect it and not long after is gone for good. Scent: 6/10 Longevity: 4/10 Projection: 3/10

Nice citrus smell, but it vanishes in a flash. It does not even last for an hour. It certainly does not qualify as an EDC, let alone being an EDP. Byredo was very interesting 6-7 years ago, but it is slowly becoming just another expensive off the shelf brand. Since the corporate takeover, it has evidently lost the touch of the founder being soulfully involved in the products.

I'm not sure why but I get a gin juniper note from this on the open, which thankfully melts away pretty quickly. After the initial tantrum it calms into clean neroli and bamboo. This is the more masculine counterpart to Blanche - both share a sterile cleanness. However, to me this one is truly unisex.

Got given to me as a gift, I have to say its very similar to Super Cedar and the longevity is about 4 hours on me. Not great but not awful.

I typically can find good things to say about any fragrance. Well, you got me on this one. To be clear, my opinion is that mister marvelous is just downright awful. It’s a piercing - screeching child, screaming, crying and kicking while you’re trying to enjoy a Friday night dinner with your significant other. It’s a guy sitting at a red-light with his top down on his ‘96 Mazda Miata - hair slicked back - aviator sunglasses with reflective gold lenses - listening to nickleback. The fact that this made it through the checks and balances system over at byredo - and was ok’d into production, is astonishing. My dislike for this scent is up there with amouage myths man. I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. I feel better now. Sincere apologies to those who like this scent - remember, this is only my opinion. 2/10

Apre maschio,come una caramella spicchio di limone Sperlari. Poi pero' vira con secchio e straccio.mi ricorda ajax per pavimenti al bergamotto e mughetto.Il tutto e' mescolato con un ottimo legno di cedro. Un po' da presbiterio...impronta riconoscibile in molti byredo. Migliora dopo un ora..non rigetta sulla mia pelle ma non piace al mio naso e alle mie tasche. Durata massima : 2 hours Passo.

116)J'aime beaucoup la créativité de cette marque mais si ils font payer le même prix pour chaque parfum c'est qu'ils sont censé tous être aussi bon. Celui-ci ne vaut pas la peine, un genre déjà vu et fait ailleurs, déjà bien mieux réussi dans la grande distribution pour la moitié du prix. Faible tenue. Vade Retro Mediocritatem

I hate to be a wet blanket, but this is some ridiculously overpriced *****. It is supposed to be a woody, aromatic, spicy etc. scent, but all I get is a watered-down orange (a.k.a. neroli and petitgrain). Why would anyone want to pay almost 200 EUR to smell like Orangina is entirely beyond me.

This works on both men and women. But it has no lasting power and a typical hand alohol scent that smells like a hospital... I would much rather go for dior homme cologne that is similar but much better!

I wanted to love this fragrance.. but unfortunately its a miss for me. That bamboo note and lavender heart notes are too cloying.. Kinda smell like cumin, at least on my nose. 4/10

Boring with really short longevity, I can smell just citruses, nothing special. I can not believe it is Byredo, which makes such a great parfumes like Bal d ́Afrique...

I am not impressed. It smells quite basic for a Byredo perfume. Another cedar which reminds of heavily Iso E Super infused perfumes. More on the masculine side. -

I hate to be negative, but to me this smells like the swab they use before they take your blood sample. Not a smell I'm into at all.

As great as the buzz of its relaunch could be, that will not change that this frag gets a mark of 3.42/5.00 with 289 votes (under 3.75/5.00 with many votes, it's usually really ultra-cr*p) over 11 years, as of today... confirming my concerns. But I'm confident that - thanks to marketing - Byredo will find, as usual, some suckers shelling out $4/ml for a pop of third-grade juice... whatever...

it's a poor, poor fragrance with an expensive, exagerate price...Pay attention: don't lose your money!!!
