Mixed Emotions

Between this and Oud Immortel this frag house feels like it's literally mining my childhood for scent inspiration. This is only the second Byredo I've smelled but just as the first time with OI, it took me right back. It feels like they went to the exact middle and high schools that I went to and scraped every musky nook and cranny they could find and recreated the scents. Immediately upon spraying I'm getting more mate than blackcurrant. Eventually the mate gives way and let's the blackcurrant come through. This is a nice blackcurrant. It's not too saccharine like in Tiffany's godawful Rose Gold. This smells like Nestea Iced Tea actually. Oh wait, I think that's the tea note already. Will update as this scent develops. I'm not getting any violet leaf at all. I see there's birch and papyrus in the base so I expect this to eventually smell like the trees and library of my high school. I can see why this house is very popular with people my age (millennials) and younger (gen z) this house is literally bottling nostalgia for people like me. I kinda wonder if Byredo's perfumers were weird loners back in school because they seem to be drawing their inspiration from the oddest and muskiest corners of a typical American school. UPDATE: I think Byredo took the route of having one dominant note and one supporting note in each stage. I'm guessing the blackcurrant was the slight sourness I detected in the background of the mate during the opening. The violet leaf was undetectable. I'm guessing that was just there to back up and amplify the tea note. As for the base, I got a little birch and, I guess, some papyrus. It's hard to detect notes by this stage because this frag is unfortunately pretty fleeting.

I'm a simple man. If it's good enough for Charli XCX, it's good enough for me. I've had a sample of Mixed Emotions for a while but quickly categorised it as "yet another papyrus/berry/pomelo fragrance" by Byredo. Curious to know what the future of pop music smells like, I tried it on again. Something Byredo does very well is grab your attention from the start. So much that a lot of their recent releases feel like scams where you get blown away smelling a bottle in store and get completely disappointed with the wearing experience after you've spent your money. This is also relevant with Mixed Emotions, all the spectacle happens in the opening. The good thing is that what's left after can also keep up. Mixed Emotions is a bright, sharp blend of opposing notes. It's woods against tea, berries against citrus, you against this cold world. The result is a very crisp, very modern scent that, according to Byredo, "reflect the tumultuous nature of our times." I love the name, I love the back story and might love the scent because of that. Stripping away the fluff, it's an interestingly transparent wearing experience. Mixed Emotions diffuses very lightly but consistently. The opening is camphorous, sharp and will immediately wake you up. Without getting your nose up to your wrist, you mainly get effervescent pomelo and maté. This is also what it will smell like for the 5-ish ours after. With the woods in the background, the vibe is weirdly tropical rainforest but make it fashion.

Mixed Emotions needs the heat. This does not shine in anything below 25-deg C to me (though it does still smell ok, it's much more dirty ashtray-like in the cool), but I love it in hot weather, and it fares well in the humidity and lasts reasonably long on me, around 4h, which is good for a scent based on fruit and tea from Byredo. When it's appropriately hot, the opening mentholated quality is wonderfully cooling and refreshing and burns off fast, leaving a bitter tea. The tea note smells more like tea than ashtray. The blackcurrant smells fruity and sweet and tart rather than sour juice from concentrate heating up in the trunk of a car (and the blackcurrant I believe is very similar to Pulp for all you Pulp-lovers out there, just in less quantities). Basically, the heat accelerates the life of this fragrance and helps burn off the more "unpleasant" bits until you're left with a tart, fruity, softly sweet tea scent. The tea quality reminds me of Memo Paris Winter Palace - this is basically Winter Palace for summer to me. Mixed Emotions lives true to its name and is the perfect scent for people like me in the summer, who are picky and don't like overly sweet, fruity, citrus, or floral scents for the season. As a side note, I think people who enjoy LUSH's Breath of God might find ways to enjoy Mixed Emotions, or vice versa (but definitely sample first).

I can’t seem to get this out of my head. First try, I liked it. Second try, I thought it was okay. I carried the paper with me everywhere and caught whiffs about it whenever I sit close to the tester strip and it tickled something in my memories. Every other sniff I loved it and every other sniff I wasn’t sure if it was for me, I felt like the Kombucha girl -meme on a loop. It smells exactly like my childhood Midsummer in Finland. The very strong black currant is a lovely sweet that changes into a warm and comforting cup of strong Tea. After that comes the subtle smokiness from the birch. It’s not a raging bonfire that leaves your clothes smell like smoke, rather a gentle smokiness that brings the midsummers to my mind. The sweet black currant is still there and it is very strong, it could be a little less. This certainly made an impression on me. I can’t forget it, but it is a complicated scent and even though I love it, it has moments where it makes me think ’but do I like it though?’. I still need to do some testing with it, but I am quite sure that this is it, my new everyday scent.

Fruit and cigs. Mixed Emotions is sooo much fun. I grab it whenever I'm getting ready for a night out, and I'm trying to channel the energy of BRAT summer and Charli XCX. Funnily enough, I just scrolled through some other reviews, and realized many people have also drawn the connection. It's playful, sexy, not too clean, a lot of the things I like in a fragrance. It's fruitier than I usually go for, but I'm not mad at it. One time I wore it, it lasted over 9 hours― I still smelled it in the morning after a night out (which feels like the epitome of the vibe Mixed Emotions is going for). It feels less daytime/summer, more nighttime/party-vibes. I also noted it can sometimes smell like Bath and Body Works meets 25-year old girl smoking a cigarette in line for the club. I was looking for something more youthful and unique than Jazz Club, and this hit the nail on the head. It's what I imagine Whiskey 1969 smelling like (though I've never smelled it).

I love this. Smells like having tea with blackcurrant jam at a dacha bonfire on a summer night, in a rusty old chair wrapped in an old quilt. Where my eastern europeans at? I want my whole life to smell like this. Wish it lasted longer. Note: I see a lot of reviews saying cat pee. As a blackcurrant fanatic, I feel obligated to point out that some of the signature terpenes in blackcurrants have analogues in cat urine. I suspect this is an exposure thing: if you grew up with blackcurrant it probably won't code as cat pee, but if you didn't your mind will leap to the nearest available association. (This terpene thing is also the case with pineapple, and shelf-stable pineapple juice reminds me of cat pee quite strongly, as I didn't grow up with pineapples.) If the bonfire is a bit much but you like the rest, you might try the OilPerfumery version: it's a little more green and a bit less smokey. tested on: skin reps: dozen test duration: hours

This is the smell of a hot Russian summer in the country side.. Endless fields of grass and wildflowers, birches, eating black currant in the shade, drinking black tea in the evening on a wooden bench, slight smoke in the evening air. Wow, super throwback to my childhood. Its sweeter than I usually like my perfume, but I would consider a full bottle! Edit 26.09.2022 Shortly after this review I bought a full bottle second hand for a really good price and this late summer/ early fall my partner and I have been absolutely obsessing over it! Its so moody, like a stormy sky, kinda dark green with dark, overly sweet berries and lovely smokiness that doesnt feel like literal burning wood or cigaret smoke or incense.. for us its an ode to cool, rainy, windy, messy and raw nature, full of force even in this period of dying and going to rest until next spring.

I really love Mixed Emotion, the mixed review is understandable, but I think the scent can be easily more appreciated by people who appreciate the complexity of spicy oriental tea, such as lapsang souchong, or the kind of tea that is served by people of Kyrgystan, or maybe Kazakhstan who live in a yurt. The tea is dark, intense, spicy, very aromatic (even though Byredo list Ceylon tea as the note... It is indeed ceylon, and some more), and the tea itself has already lent the gorgeous, warm and complicated tea vibe to the scent, with its spices giving off smoky feels, something that could warm us in the chilly winter. And on top of it, add blackcurrant, and that is how Mixed Emotion for me. A delicious, wonderful spicy tea with blackcurrant infused flavor. And for all its grandeur, there is no mixed feeling about this fragrance. I love it.

after months of searching for places to smell byredo fragrances in my country (which was extremely difficult) i by chance without searching came across a whole collection of what i think has to be every single fragrance from the line. i tried three different fragrances on my body that day, Bal D’afrique, Gypsy Water and Mixed Emotions. the one that stood out the most was Mixed Emotions, not only did it last 8 hours, the scent itself was this really fruity scent with a base of leather and woodyness to it. personally, i dislike fragrances that smell of leather, but this time it was just done right in my opinion. by the time i realized how much i liked this fragrance i had already purchased two fragrances that day so i’ll probably get my hands on this later down the line. highly recommend

I happen to receive a sample when I was doing a fragrance swap, along with Sunday Cologne. It was a pleasant surprise to smell this. This starts off with a fruity yet bitter smoky tea which was pretty contrasting. And it was expected because it has Mate, tea and Birch. All these add to incensy, smokiness that I detect from mixed emotions. Surprisingly that scent trail was pretty linear, with better performance than I expected. I also do Matsukita has a similar profile, Put that on my skin has more dynamic range than mixed emotions. The motivation for this fragrance is to invoke comforting feeling according to the write up above, but I personally don't think that is the case. I think this represents more of labile mood or double sided nature of human beings.

Reminds me of Balsamic Liniment (Vishnevsky Ointment) , it’s a herbal plus ointment (no shit Sherlock) scent and whether you liked it or hate it depends on will you like this fragrance or not. I don’t mind fresh, herbal, minty and !cooling! scent, so I got this one to wear for layering with other fragrances or just as it is. On me it smells very juniper-dominant (even though it’s not mentioned), I didn’t hear from people near me that it is giving natural, naturopathic smells lol. It is 6 hours on skin or 8 if you apply lotion first. I see it easily being layered well with musky , ambery or woody fragrances that have simple pyramid. Love love love. But yeah, it is niche type of love; have to be drawn towards pine tree type scents.

I bought this during lockdown and the nostalgia it brought me when working from home was so intense that I couldn’t wear it at first but I absolutely love it. It’s all woody, smoky dark currants, mixed together. It doesn’t last for eternity but it’s strong enough. It’s also a compelling sniffer - you’ll get wafts of it from your neck and arms for hours. I agree with the review below which links it to Lush Junk. For me, it always makes me think of being little and snuggling into my dad’s wool cardigan right after he’d smoked a tobacco pipe. The image is so strong. I don’t even know that he ever smelled like this scent but the olfactory association is wildly vivid. It takes me right back. They nailed the naming.

Byredo's Mixed Emotions is a wonderous scent that immediately gets me captivated. This Byredo scent is breathtaking; it is menthol-like, sweet, and ever-so-slightly woody from the birch. The black currant note is done incredibly well; in between layers of mint-like mate and tea, there is a nice sweetness that feels greatly natural. The longevity is also great– I get about 5-6 hours and decent sillage with three sprays. Despite being somewhat linear, because the scent itself is quite remarkable, I would 100% recommend Mixed Emotions for those who want a signature-scent-worthy summer/spring night-out fragrance. 9/10.

last summer in la before they got rid of the 5ml sizes i flirted with a sa @ the byredo in the grove for a free one. then i proceeded to use it all throughout my very tumultuous and fun-filled summer, particularly while i was clubbing in shanghai and lkf in hong kong. full of strawberry flavored menthols you bum off strangers in lines for bars, fruity cocktails and too many free tequila shots. i could just inhale this high forever. three words to describe - tall dark & handsome!! very true to the name i probably wont wear this when i'm older though... boyf gonna buy full-size for me soonnn

To me this smells exactly like mixed emotions. I cannot pick up anything else but a well blended masterpiece with my nose. My mind conjures up images of cold autumn nights - that moment just after the end of a sunset. Pale orange light casting blueish shadows of trees through the blinds. Melancholy of a young adult. Excitment of change mixing with anxiety. Uncertainty. Sparkling sweet wine and champagne without the alcohol note. Cold autumnal air. Empty house. Nostalgia. A Lucy Dacus song. A chimney somewhere nearby. Shriveled up fruit and leaves rotting on the ground.

I love Mixed Emotions, sadly, but it's too heavy for the summer for me it opens up as slightly sweet matte and mint, with a little bit of smoke, then becomes heavier and more ashy, maybe even dusty and a bit sweeter (i accidentally rubbed it in at this stage and it does really give a flare of a cat litter box vibe, so don't do that maybe) the sweetness comes from currant i guess, but i can not for the life of me get any violet leaf.... the papyrus is present throughout, which is lovely overall wintery and refreshing, would love to wear this on a sunny snowy morning

I was so impressed by the uniqueness of this scent I had to invest in a full bottle. Like someone said before it's kind of intoxicating. Quickly became my favorite black currant-centric scent besides Svensk Parfym Prakt. Totally different vibes though. I also understand that birch tar note might be off-putting and a deal-breaker, but for me this dichotomy - fruity and fresh colliding with savory and bitter is part of the appeal of this fragrance. EDIT: The deep drydown is a little disappointing, only powdery ionones and remnants of the cassis base.

There's no sweetness in this one. It's only woody; basically smells like birch, pine tree sap and the same smoky smell that hits your face when opening a bag of fresh mate herb. Its very well balanced and the smell of mate comes somehow after the trees. Smells exactly like in the forests of north Europe (where I live) in the summer. Has a performance of about 4 hours. In warm weather vanishes rapidly. It's a good perfume for sure, but there's no reason for this to cost so much.

I absolutely adore this fragrance and sincerely hope the perfumers never touch the formula. To me, it smells like the morning after a great party. Someone wakes up slightly hungover, steps outside for a cigarette, and carries traces of last night’s memories on their clothes. But without any of the unpleasant stale or boozy undertones people often associate with that image. It’s all smoke, cigarettes, tea, and fruit. A little messy, a little tired, but incredibly attractive.

I dont get any smokiness or menthol or any other weird notes that people are talking about here. On me is just very green slightly sweet black currants scent wirh a hint of tea. I am testing a sample that i bought without looking at the notes, just intigued by the name. I was expecting more Complex scent but i probably have to try again just to confirm my impression. As far as now i can totally see myself wearing it, especially on a hot summer day.

Very dry and sweet fruity; somewhat like cigarette+tea; slightly leathery; not floral or woody at all. This is a very special and oddly pleasant scent that I’m never tired of wearing. It smells like a crowd of people doing different things around you. Some are peeling and eating fresh fruits, some are drinking green tea from their Thermos bottle, some are smoking cigarettes and chatting aloud. Every time you sniff you pick up something different.

A Byredo masterpiece- one of my all time favorites. From opening through the dry down, this scent is truly captivating. Opens with a slightly screechy menthol, and dries down to the most beautiful tea I've ever smelled. This one is a very mature frag, as are most Byredo, I would say. Certainly not for everyone, but this one is my jam. I wish more houses would take note of such a profound evolution profile. This is what a fragrance is all about.

Once I smelled this perfume on a friend of mine and immediately fell in love with it. A beautiful blend of blackcurrant, smoked tea, and bitter leather. Bold, daring, and very attractive. Quite unisex, but still with a slight feminine touch, in my opinion. I've received compliments on it several times, which says something. Despite the fact that, overall, Byredo is quite overhyped and sometimes boring, this is a good choice.

To me this smells like an aesthetic 90' Tokyo-wave song. It's incredible with smoke, the tea and mate are like a soft mint.. it smells like a leafy Tic-Tac that turns smoky and birchy. I love the scent, but the name says it all. It's a love it or hate it fragrance. Smell is a 9/10 for me, projection is 6/10 and longevity is 7/10. It's great, really unique, and it smells very fresh, weird, awesome in the same time, so nice.

Perfect name for a perfume that evokes intense ambivalence and hooks you with its weird contrasts, rather than with harmony or ease: sweet/savoury, fruity/smoky, fresh/dirty. I don't typically like either blackcurrant or black tea/mate notes, but for some reason I find this really engaging. Especially good to wear if you're feeling a bit rebellious/obstreperous and want to come across as cool but unaccommodating.

Wow this is sexy and a complete evolutions, most people here didnt give the fragrance time to do it’s thing. It starts off smoky and citrusy with hints of fruit in the background. Once the smoke dies down your left with this lush green tea like scent with berries and a little herb to give it some lift. It’s definitely takes you on a trip and I’ve gotten multiple complements when I wear this, very underrated

While in a parfum shop i sprayed a bunch on my arm. Some heavy hitters, and this one. This was me and my girlfriends favourite. I always wanted more fruity masculine perfumes and this fits the bill because of the birch. I also am a big fan of red fruits so this just really is up my alley. I'm glad i found something that can be my signature scent that hardly anyone is wearing

I get a lot of compliments when I wear Mixed Emotions. I’m quite heavy handed with it as it doesn’t last long. Minty opening and a yummy blackcurrant scent as it dries down. People think it smells sexy, which is always a funny compliment. I have found that when I wear it on clubbing/drinking nights with YSL Y EDP layered over it, I get a tonne more compliments.

Adore this. Don’t understand the Dear Polly connection at all and I don’t understand the “cat pee” thing either, having owned cats all my life. This is a fruity, smoky masterpiece. I liken it a bit to The Moon by Frederic Malle but tamer (but still has a kick). This is one of the best and in my top 5 BYREDO juices. Longevity is 6-8 hours for sure.

Im with the review below me. I don’t get any smoke in this fragrance. It smells like a scent memory to me. When I was a young lad, whenever I would catch a cold, my mom would make me some hot tea with honey and she would dissolve two red or ‘cherry’ flavored cough drops in the cup for me to drink to soothe me. Mixed emotions smells just like that.

Fragrance is so fun! 😂 I love reading all these wildly different reviews. On me, this smells mostly of smoke, like, charcoal briquette smoke. And menthol. And a little bit of black currant 😁 It's somewhat headache-inducing, but oddly I'm intrigued enough to where I'm sure I'll use my whole sample, but I don't think I'd buy a full-size bottle.

The best way to describe this is tea and jam in the British rainy countryside. I wore my sample to death in winter because it balances smokiness and sweetness, but found myself grabbing for it on rainy summer days too. My sample felt more smoky than my 50ml. This is not a safe blind buy but is very unique

I always wanted to buy a perfume from Byredo as I love their aesthetics, but after testing many, could not decide for any particular fragrance. After Mixed Emotion came out, and I got to smell it - it was clearly made for me! It's sweet-smoky, kind of perfect sweetness that is not overly sweet.

On my skin it smells exactly like a jelly snake, I absolutely love this smell but I understand it could not be for everyone. Whenever I wear it I get plenty of compliments and it lasts around 10-12hrs on my skin. Overall a very nice fragrance.

This is a gorgeous smokey blackcurrant fragrance. It’s so fresh and fruity, but has a beautiful layer of mystery and depth. I didn’t think I’d be one to adore a fragrance with tea notes, yet here I am, completely addicted.

Loved this fragrance. To me it smells like black currant and spicy woody on my skin, although friends say more of a sweet woody scent. Its my new signature, I feel like it brings mystery and is not overly sweet.

I really like this smoky tea fragrance. Similar to dear Polly but less sweet without the apple note. I would use it for night time in the summer or anytime of day during fall/winter.

Perfect flavored tea scent that is very mature at the same time. Performance and projection are noticeably above average.

It smells like Halls candy or Lush Junk. Interesting and unusual scent. Wow! Really fresh and greeny sweet.

It certainly lives up to its name as upon my first 2 wearings of this I definitely had mixed emotions/thoughts on this fragrance (which were initially negative/indifferent), however after giving it time to settle in my mind and trying it again, I'd say it's pleasant now. It opens up with a prominent Black Currant that on my skin isn't that sweet and it's quite tame and suppressed, and i get another weird semi medicinal smell (not in a bad way), which I presume is the Maté, after the opening, the Black currant's prominence drops down quite a bit and gets replaced by a tea accord that I'd say is around equal if not slightly below the Maté, that gets accentuated by a woodiness that comes in a little bit further in and remains quite prominent later in the drydown. As for the BBQ comparisons seen in other reviews, I personally don't get that at all on both tester strip and on my skin, but all fragrance experiences are subjective. As for wearability, this could be used all year round except maybe the extreme cold n hot weather, it's also perfectly unisex in my opinion as nothing leans heavy feminine or masculine in its composition, longevity is around 6-7 hours on my skin with light-medium projection. Would I reach for it over other Byredo fragrances?, no, but it's still a nice fragrance in my opinion, I'm just not the right person to appreciate it. Final Verdict is a 6/10

Mixed Emotions for sure. While this is a lovely scent, it smells like an expensive version of White Tea and Ginger by B&BW— and lasts half the time! On first spritz it is very fresh and minty, the birch comes through heavy on me. Before I read the notes I smelt it and immediately thought “wow this smells exactly like the forest in the winter” there are a lot of birch trees where I live so I guess the scent is spot on. The black currant comes through on the dry down but it didn’t smell overly fruity on me. Tea scent is heavy throughout. After a few hours there is a strong lingering smokiness that outweighs the other notes, similar to Margiela’s by the fireplace. This is not as unique as other Byredo scents, but it is also more palatable and a little less niche. Not sure about the $200 price tag on this scent

Finally, a perfume truly loyal to its name as it literally gives you mixed emotions! One one hand, you've got the fruity black current and some fresh green elements. On the other, you've got some bitterness coming from mate and the tea. It's a peculiar combination of things that change over time. At times, it'll feel like you're in a plantation, others times, it'll feel cold or even vegetal and then there'll be moments where you could swear there's a bit of leather but there isn't... It's an odd fragrance for the bold and eccentric. I'll give this to Byredo. Do I want to smell like that everyday? No Do I want to smell like that sometimes? Yes. Do I like it? Yes. Do I not like it sometimes? Yes. Mixed emotions. Here you go...

I always thought I was a black currant hater (too grassy/pissy in my experience thus far), but I guess Mixed Emotions is living up to its name by turning that bias around. My blind impression was that it was kind of a unisex, pulpy, blackberry scent with lots of smoky herbal intrigue, while simultaneously remaining quite light and cool-- practically easy to throw on whenever, if you can get over the fact that it's a spendy Byredo. I'm a fan of mate/tea scents in general, but the violet leaf and birch here are new-to-me and create a lovely balance of ozonic freshness and leathery depth. I'm pleasantly surprised by the execution, and find it to be a very handsome fragrance overall.
