Rose Noir

I was almost giving up on Byredo. Which is stupid since I ́ve only tried Bal d'Afrique and Gipsy Water before I tried this. I like both Bal d'Afrique and Gipsy Water, but neither had any wow effect on me. But Rose Noir is different. It ́s weird, but to me the opening is a bit aquatic and I can swear I get black tea with rose. There is no tea, I know, but still it ́s so strong I can almost taste it. Maybe it's the moss? And the "tea" is what I like very much. I was also convinced there is patchouli. And yes there is, it ́s not listed on the notes here, but it ́s there according to official Byredo site: Top: Cardamom, Freesia, Grapefruit, Red Berries Heart: Lily of the Valley, Raspberry, Rose Damascena, Violet, Jasmine Base: Moss, Musk, Patchouli, Cistus Labdanum This is a love for me. I understand why someone would not think this as a dark rose, and I think it ́s more earthy and mysterious than dark. Not heavy at all. If you are looking for a very dark beast mode rose, this is not it. The longevity and silage are moderate. Perhaps even on the weak side. But that's the way I like it. One of the best roses I have encountered with. I like this better than Rose en Noir or Eau de Protection. I love Portrait of a Lady, but it's sometimes too much for me. This could be the more wearable rose. It does turn a bit masculine on the dry down, but not too much. Nevertheless the masculinity might turn out to be the deal breaker... depends on what the SO thinks. Or maybe I just don't care. Definitely going to purchase more samples of this. Just can't go with FB right now, too expensive...

Byredo Rose Noir ignited my obsession to discover the perfect masculine rose fragrance. Until I sampled it, I had a very narrow view of what constituted a rose scent—all floral and feminine like Bvlgari Rose Goldea—so I shied away from testing anything that had rose in the name. Byredo Rose Noir is not that type of rose. This one is intense, astringent, mossy, almost medicinal. In fact, my wife asserted it reminds her of Vick’s Vapor Rub. I’m not a Vapor Rub aficionado, but to my nose, this is a very unisex, very fresh composition with an unusual pairing of rose, oak moss, grapefruit, and labdanum. The rose itself has a honeyed tinge to it in the opening, though the honey is gone within twenty minutes. The rest of the dry-down is fairly linear. On my skin, performance is good, giving me whiffs of freshness up to six hours after a double spray. Silage is a moderate arm’s length or a bit further, certainly not room filling, and this is just what I want with a perfume—I don’t want to gas out those around, but I want to smell the fragrance myself. The first time I wore it, a cashier in an electronics store gave me a compliment, asking what I was wearing because she was looking for a gift for a relative. I’ve worn it without prejudice in summer, fall, and winter now, so it seems to have versatility for any season. Highly recommended. (The Byredo site gives a number of additional notes that aren't listed here such as cardamon, red berries, Jasmine, Lily of the Valley, Violet and Patchouli.)

Such a beautiful perfume, I can't believe it's not on the shelves anymore. I was lucky to get a sample of it. It's surprisingly not heavy at all, even though it smells quite deep and complex. Some tartness of the berries, lemons add a refreshing zing. There is the same level of sharpness from patchouli like in Chanel's Paris Paris. It mostly smells like if you would mix Sisley's Soir de Lune with Sisley's Izia La Nuit. If you like both of these perfumes and overall like Sisley, I think, there is a great chance you would enjoy Rose Noir. It's borderline melancholic, dusty and lonely wild rose, but not completely there yet. There is some gloominess about it, a sombre feeling of the forest grounds. Unisex, a bit more on the feminine side. The moss with the rose is just a stunning combination, even though the moss is pretty light in here. +

I love this! Very unique. I first will say I agree with the common opinion that this is not quite "noir" it is not dark or dusty. It is the opposite. I think the name is causing a less than favorable review from most people. However the note description of this fragrance is right on point. The rose opens up so beautifully. I do not get the grapefruit but I do get the lemon! The rose and lemon mix so well it reminds me if a rose met a starburst candy this is what it would taste like! Yes taste like! The fragrance is so sparkly I can just about taste it. The dry down is where the slight noir comes into play for me. Drys down or should I say winds down into a calm rose/musk/freesia. Lasts quite awhile and is just amazing! Another great addition to the Byredo House!

Man, I love this fragrance! Like with many fragrances, my body chemistry skips the top notes and go straight to embracing the mid and basenotes -- I don't mind that at all. This is so beautiful with the woody notes from the oakmoss blending in with the roses. There's a little spice to it without spoiling the lushness of the roses. I like the originality of this blend. I've owned so many rose fragrances over the years and appreciate the direction this one takes instead of the typical pure floral path. The only negative thing I have to say is DAMN, it's expensive! That said, I don't regret splurging on this at all.

This is my favourite fall/winter scent of all times, it made me very happy to come back to it few weeks ago when days got colder. I normally don’t like rose but this is something else. There is an animal accord which gives it a claw. It’s luxurious, dark and erotic but not too heavy. Random people compliment and ask me about it all the time. To me it’s a scent of a fame fatale with a black panther on her side. It’s not for someone looking for a classic rose I guess. I love it and since I heard it’s discontinued I’m stocking up.

Huge fan of roses fragrance. I had to pick between Byredo' s Rose Noir and Rose of no man's land (RNML). I prefer the opening of the second, Rose Noir is a generic rose opening, not really stunning or special.... but wait 10-15 minutes and the dry down is the most heavenly on this earth. And definitely unique. And dark. I suppose is the oak moss entering and staying. I believe the best rose fragrance would be the start of RNML and the end of BR. 4/5 UPDATE: maybe I found this fragrance, Rose Anonyme of Atelier Cologne !!

I think Rose Noir is a hidden gem in Byredo's line up. On myself and to my nose it is a dark red earthy rose, close to withering, probably due to the oakmoss, with a slightly dark berry type quality. At the same time it is also watery, not as in watered down, but as in a sense of water. Not juicy, but it gives me a sense of "water". I think it's a very unique, interesting and beautiful scent. The sillage must be good as I have been complimented many times with it, and it's long lasting, great performance for a Byredo.

Wow I’m not sure what it is but this is such an addictive fragrance to me, I cannot stop smelling myself!! When I first sprayed my sample, it felt veryyy reminiscent to Coco Mademoiselle. However, as it developed I actually think this smells better!! I really pick up the Moss in the base of the fragrance. As someone else mentioned below, it does have a rose freshly taken out of dirt vibe to it. I feel like that makes the fragrance soooo unique, it’s weird but I like it. Definitely picking up a full bottle ASAP! :)

I love this fragrance and was lucky enough to get my hands on it. It’s a deep, dark mysterious rose. It’s sexy! It smells sweet due to the fruit notes in it. What I like about it is it’s not your typical rose fragrance. This one is grown and sexy. But not in a mature way. It’s very much a sparkling rose with deep dark nuances. Longevity and silage are great especially for a Byredo. This is my favorite Byredo thus far! It’s going to be perfect for fall and winter too. I feel like it has some witchy vibes. Lol

I was so looking forward to loving this fragrance, the notes sounded delicious! It starts off very citrus-y on me, then the oakmoss slips in and gets a little too masculine for my taste. The rose and musk come in on drydown, but only last a short time, I can't believe this is a perfume. It doesn't last on me, even with cream under it. I'm glad I didn't spend the money without testing it first, I was tempted to. It's okay, but to me it's missing a sweet component.

The dominant mossy woods adds a masculine, musty contemporary edge to what could have been a pretty scent. Instead it feels seductive and haunting. I was a bit surprised when I first sampled this. I I feel the formulation has been tweaked a bit, since the pink liquid to the now clear liquid. It is definitely louder and mossier. It was quite green, but not a fresh one but a dirty patchouli like mossiness. Certainly isn't girly and innocent.

This perfume is so sophisticated and beautiful. The rose is quite sweet, almost like rose turkish delight (but not that syrupy) with a slight spiciness. It's quite modern in that sense whilst still retaining a very classic rose quality. As the perfume dries a beautiful warm wood note comes through that is probably the most feminine I've ever smelt in a wood perfume. Overall a wonderful perfume for a sophisticated woman.

Nothing "noir" whatsoever. Very fresh, clean summery pink rose, yet rich. Reminds me a lot of Stella McCartney's discontinued gem "In Two Peony", just smoother and without all the pepperiness. The rose note reminds me a bit of MFK's glorious "Lumière Noire", with LN being a gorgeous evening perfume, and Rose Noir more casual and relaxed. Overall a very qualitative take on rose, deliciously smelling and strong.

This rose is thick and syrupy and feels dipped in wine. As the name suggests Rose is the most prominent note, and yes it is dark, its not the fresh rose with fresh cut stems. It is a rose that has been blended with patchouli and oakmoss and besides the rose, these two are the notes that I get most. A very heady combination, especially if you are a rose lover. I personally love it and highly recommend it.

I think the name is very precise, this is a dark rose. Dark, but not heavy. Very sensual and elegant, even mysterious, for special evenings. (Not my work day scent!) I love the way rose is treated in this perfume. It's not sweet, but earthy, dusty without being heavy. Very fine perfume, perfect for special occasions. Perfect for someone looking for a mature, elegant rose scent that is not sweet.

Starts off with dominant rose smell, which is a bit sour and sharp, almost like if somebody mixed "Henna" with some beautiful rose and lime smell. The first 30 minutes is not the best part but as it dries down, it turns into a beautiful leathery smell (leather is not even a note here), which I adore. Really beautiful in the drydown. Scent: 9/10 Longevity: 8/10 Projection: 7/10

It's like Jean Couturier's coriandre, and Clinique's aromatic elixir had a baby called Rose Noir. It smells grown up and chic. Nothing sickly sweet here. It is all about roses, patchouli, and a bit of moss. Top ingredients, lasts all day on me, and the sillage is excellent. Highly recommended if you're into those 70s rose and patchouli chypres.

There is something very intriguing with this perfume. I would definitely want my girlfriend to have it. Sadly the sizes seems to be 50ml / 100ml, whereas I'd prefer the 12ml sizes. Of course it could be unisex, but I would consider it more female than male.

Oooooh booooy!! The more I use it, the better it gets. The dry down is so freaking awsome. I don't know what I am going to do when my 12ml decant is finished. Most probably I will buy a 100ml bottle. ;-P

Rose with damp soil and some berries. It's odd but really sexy. Definitely my type of rose. I think it can be worn all year round.

Pungent chypre rose that has a surprising musty opening! One of my favourite roses.

What I would wear on a date to a cemetery at night.

To my nose, Byredo ROSE NOIR packs a powerful punch of patchouli. It's really unmistakeable, and I am confused by the omission of this note from the official list offered above and at the house's website. If this isn't patchouli, then I must not know what patchouli is! Do cistus and moss combine to form a patchouli-like scent? Well, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that this "patchouli"-rose perfume smells beautiful. I'd rank it right up there with Heeley HIPPIE ROSE, although the rose is far less dominant here. That just makes this composition more unisex and probably wearable also by men. I'd have to do a side-by-side test in order to be able to decide between all of the high-quality, natural-smelling, niche patchouli rose perfumes currently available, including Frédéric Malle PORTRAIT OF A LADY and Juliette Has a Gun VENGEANCE EXTREME, but this one is definitely in the running. I myself do not find this perfume very dirty, as it has been marketed. To me this composition presents a clean darkness. ROSE NOIR does not smell animalic to me in the least. Maybe a bit like the soil clinging to the roots of a patchouli plant, but not a touch of skank is present here, according to my nose. ROSE NOIR is earthy in the way that L'Artisan Parfumeur VOLEUR DE ROSES is earthy, and I do think that this would make a fine choice for guys as well as gals. ROSE NOIR is my favorite of the creations of the house of Byredo which I've tested so far... Excellent longevity, too, and it actually becomes stronger over the course of the day. I'd call this one parfum/extrait strength, given its projection and heft.

It is a good but not great fragrance as someone pointed that out before. I don't very much like its opening but its dry down is nice. When I kept smelling on the testpaper after it settled, the image of a deadly seductive black rose growing freely on a deserted place suddenly came into my mind and it was later that I found out its name is rose noir. It is good smelling and versatile. But as what I have said before it is not special and unique enough considering the immense number of rose fragrances in the market. I would like to wear it especially in colder days for a darker and woody rose but I would probably not buy it as there are many other options for me in this brand. In fact I suddenly found it a bit similar to La Fille de Berlin by Serge Lutens but it is darker, deeper and more woody than that. Besides, its rosy note is not as strong as that one though the feeling and image they give me are quite similar. Both a dangerously attractive rose seducing you to step closer and closer and confusing you with its incomparable beauty to make you unaware of the danger in front. It is very fortunate that I got La Fille de Berlin with me and I wrote the last paragraph smelling and comparing the two. Indeed they are similar albeit I prefer La Fille de Berlin to Rose Noir as it is a bolder and more feminine version.

ROSE NOIR impressed me with its delicateness and longevity. First up, I am not usually a rose lover. I do not enjoy straight up roses (e.g. Tea Rose by Perfumer's Workshop)or candied roses (e.g.Sa Majeste la Rose). In particular, I find patchouli roses challenging(e.g. Lady Vengeance) due to the musty/dirty undertone. To my surprise, ROSE NOIR is a delightful, delicate, uplifting and extremely feminine fragrance. Being a non-Rose-lover, this seems to suggest ROSE NOIR is a worthy composition. On my skin, ROSE NOIR smells like top notch rose petals preserved in a hard candy. The initial spray brings the delicious sweetness, followed by whiffs of delicate rose petals blooming on the skin. The scent is very smooth, quite sweet with some "ripe" quality abou it. I can't quite put my finger on what is the "hard candy" effect, but it's not really fruity. I do not detect any labdanum or oakmoss. I find ROSE NOIR rather linear, with average sillage and excllent longevity. The comments I get are: soft (not weak), sweet, feminine and intimate. Everybody seemed to love it on me and giving positive comments. I recommend this as a date night fragrance. It is the perfect mixture of subtle & seductive beauty.

Rose Noir opens with the sharpest, tangiest burst of grapefruit, citrus slicing through the air like the first breath of a cold morning. Clean, crystalline, like freesia after rain. Bright, but laced with a bitter edge, not sour per se but green and earthy, like a stock still rooted in soil. Slowly, deliberately, the rose unfurls. But not the sugary, dewy kind that can get lost in perfume-y fog. This is a rose that’s grounded, warmer, and more assertive. It comes with cardamom spicy and complex, bringing harmonious dimension to the scent, like a bit of fire against the cool morning breeze. Then comes patchouli, earthy and mossy, weaving through like a steady undercurrent. Not dark, not heavy, but definitely rooted. As it settles, you’re left with something that’s warm and rich, but with enough contrast to keep it from being too cozy, too comfy. The bitterness of the grapefruit still lingers, but it’s softened by the aromatic pull of patchouli. Rose Noir wears like a hybrid, caught somewhere between the elegance of rose and the ruggedness of the earth, something delicate and something wild. An interesting blend, a little more bold than I expected, not quite my type but no less alluring

Hate it or love, I do feel this is the most complex of the Byredo line. (I am currently sitting with samples of almost every single fragrance currently on the market.) It truly evolves with time and each part of it tells a different story. It opens as a very industrial, peppery/papery rose, actually very similar to the opening of Kierin's Rose Ink. The combo of Grapefruit and Freesia makes for an interesting smell almost like Hubba Bubba gum mixed with a papery-peppery smell. The heart of this fragrance is very green. I get rose stems over rose petals. & then comes the drydown -- the part most akin to Ylang 49 - where it gets spicy and musky and very chypre-like. WHO I PICTURE THIS ON: This feels like the ultimate early 40s fragrance. She knows who she is; she's confident in her skin; it's very out there and mysterious, but the muskiness has a maternal quality. If you grew up with a friend whose mom you just felt epitomized happiness and beauty (think like Ms Honey from Matilda vibes), I feel like she wears this.

I tried to love it. It was the first Byredo fragrance I tried and I loved the list of notes in it. It just doesn’t smell appealing on me so I always have to layer it with another scent to tolerate it for an entire day. There is a distinctive note that I can’t identify that just doesn’t do it for me. It is definitely not like any other perfume I know, so that’s good in terms of uniqueness. I just don’t feel “wow” when I wear it but I am sure someone else might if it works better with their skin chemistry. Update: This is one year after my previous review and I have upgraded the ranking from okay to like because there is something intriguing about it that has me captivated. I believe the uniqueness of this scent is what makes it worth wearing because there are too many perfumes now that smell similar. You can’t mistake this. When I am in full mode Alpha Female, Boss Mama night time, grab attention state, this is what I will wear for sure. It is dark, deep and untamed. 😎

Byredo Rose Noir suggests "dark" in its name, but I don't get much of that vibe from the fragrance itself. It's an agreeable semi-fresh, semi-powdery rose-dominant scent with fresh grapefruit and freesia in the opening, drying down to a musky, slightly woody base. It's seemingly versatile (not that dark), so there's value in that, and while it leans somewhat feminine, rose-loving men would have no trouble pulling this off, either. It's also a decent performer, walking the line between some of the weaker summer scents (i.e. the EDCs, BDA) and more powerhouse winter scents (i.e. 1996). As with many of the house's scents, though, Rose Noir falls into the "good but not great" category, very pleasant to smell and wear, and I'd wear it again sometime perhaps, but it moves the needle so little, particularly given the abundance of rose-dominant fragrances, that I wouldn't give much further thought to buying it. 7 out of 10

Baroque, night-purple rose with curls of patchouli and ripe-to-bursting berries. It opens like a Concord grape jelly, but spends most of its lifespan as a mossy musk. The patchouli is decidedly menthol-y, which I think provides a beautiful contrast, and lifts the scent off the forest floor. The rose heart is rich, but thorn-free. I feel this whole scent is thick with petrichor. It’s like running Rose of No Man’s Land through the blue-tinged Twilight filter. The musk lingers the whole day without being overbearing. A pleasant surprise in my book. Mental Snapshot: A gothic romance novel cover. Dew-lacquered rosettes, moonlit pine boughs. Amy Lee of Evanescence cloaked in crimson velvet. Silver-foil calligraphy. Forbidden romance, between Little Red and a werewolf, or Maleficent and Beauty. tl;dr: literally this emoji 🥀 🥀

The first couple of hours of wear are really special - the scent is nostalgic, moody, mature but not "old", romantic, introspective. Reminds me of something many David Lynch starlettes would wear, which is A+ for me. On good days this smells like a rose blooming in the evening on a perpetually damp, mossy gravestone. I have had bad days with it too, that makes me hesitant to get the full bottle - where it turns a bit sour and the black currant dominates. I'm wondering if it has to do with where my hormones are at that turns it? Anyway, it's a little inconsistent, but very pretty and unique for a rose scent, when it's working with my chemistry.

Pleasant rose scent with a certain green, woody twist. Fresh and clean. Quite light for an EdP. Definitely not your typical sweet, girly, feminine rose. This is more of a mysterious-without-being-dark, foresty scent. The rose actually fairly quickly fades into the background and is well balanced against the other notes Really does smell like a forest, actually... Must be the oakmoss. Smells like when you walk into the shadow of a forest on a warm sunny day and get a whiff of cool air from a nearby lake. Very nice. Somewhat unisex but leans a bit feminine in my opinion. The green forest vibe makes it totally wearable for a man, though.

It's amazing how we all perceive this differently. I definitely get the citrus and Fresia at the beginning. Makes it sparkly in my mind. There is a slight similarity to the Lalique mentioned but is quite remote. The oakmoss & labdunum then kicks in and must give a patch type feel that is a distant relative to the much more intense patch/pepper notes on perl. This is much more subtle but I get the comparisons. The rose is wrapped around all this and jumps up and shouts out every so often. I like it but not enough to justify the costs and its not all that unique

Earthy and mossy rose, like walking into a dense forest. Totally agree with @sarage's review, that its a darker rose (take it as a black and white of rose of no mans land) yet airy. For some reason, it feels watery (as in watered down). As such i think it can be used both during the day and night. The opening is really familiar, but once it develops, it gets more unique. The sillage and performance are the same with the usual byredos - quite weak across both, but you will get occasional whiffs.

A very dark rose perfume! Dark without being smoky with a really loud opening of a mossy/green rose right after spraying, and the middle notes of citrus and spicy cardamom really popped for me after about a half hour/hour, while eventually drying down very woody and powdery. Sillage was pretty decent, but didn't last long :( Probably would not buy for myself but if you are looking for a more "mature" or earthy rose scent this is totally a date night perfume to me.

I like this uncommon rose/moss combo without turning old school or becoming dated. This is not noir by any means but it's a beautiful rose scent for both genders suitable for fall, spring, day and night and for cool summer evenings. I get dominant rose/moss, intensive labdanum, faint musk and mild grapefruit at the drydown. It's a long lasting scent which stays close to the skin most of its life. Sillage is moderate-average.

My skintype and Rose Noir doesn't get along at all. I love dark roses but here - its just a mess. If I spray on paper or on a jumper, its a wonderful, dark almost unisex rose-scent. But not for me. Min hudtyp och Rose Noir funkar inte alls. Jag älskar mörka rostoner men här blir det bara en mörk gegga. Om jag sprejar på tyg eller papper så är den jättefin, mörk nästan lite unisex ros. Men den är inte för mig.

Very unique fragrance, like nothing I've ever smelled. I purchased a decant of this after seeing a bottle on Camille Rowe's shelf. Really nice, floral-y opening with a mossy, earthy dry down. I find this fragrance to be strange in a good way, and very dark-smelling. I think Byredo Rose Noir and Tom Ford Black Orchid are practicing witchcraft in the woods together at night.

Great scent, a lot more interesting and slightly less feminine than Rose of No Man's Land. My skin chemistry must absolutely hate it though, as it doesn't project pretty much at all and lasts 1-2 hours on me. 5 sprays on my wrists and I'm struggling to detect it a couple of hours later. Really surprised to see people write that it lasts 12 hours for them.

Rose fugere. Green, earthy, smells mostly moss, patchouli and rose. It's like old school fugere but with modern twist in a sheer layer of fruit and flower. Dry down gives me flashback to the 80s, not a bad thing. It's just that they didn't make something like this anymore these days. Love it

Rose with a slightly dark drydown. The dark note is the oakmoss used in a lot of men's colognes. Would be a great night scent. Leans more feminine due to the rose. But the drydown is more reminiscent of men's sporty cologne. Nice perfume. 8 out of 10. For reference, I'm female.

I adore how lovely the rose smells like in a Byredo fragrances, especially in Rose Noir. It's a sparkling fruity rose scent that later develops into a earthy, slightly dusty rose with a hint of wet soil. Definitely a banger and too bad they discontinuing this gem...

Opens with some nice citrus Then the rose comes running to your nose It is a complex rose scent though not something unique The worst part about the fragrance is the longevity less than moderate hits the 3rd hour at the end of the life of the fragrance

Opened up very fizzy and sharp. Citrus and freesia with a berry vibe. Then the rose and berry mixed with jasmine followed. Nice. Definitely not a rose scent I expected. As it developed it became very much like Rose Anonyme.

Really lovely sultry rose scent. Lasts more than 12 hours on my skin too (I always spray 1 spray per wrist). It’s easy to wear, but not boring

To me this smells like cigarettes and dried rose petals. Its a touch balsamic and I smell no musk. Smells very "noir"

Why haven't they put up Rose of no mans land in the Byredo parfum list ?
