Rouge Chaotique

Before I get into the review, please don't wear white when spraying this, or if you are, proceed with caution as the oil in this Fragrance easily stains anything white with a bright red; onto the review: On my skin it opens up with an airy, dark, and juicy Plum with a slightly metallic and herbaceous smelling accord (which my guess would be the Cassis+Oud combo)and it almost smells faintly Aemi-playdough like minus the saltiness in a way, but fret not, for this is the prelude to the best part of the fragrance where the magic comes out, which is the mid+drydown. As this fragrance dries down, the Plum settles in and mellows out a little, becoming warmer, a little darker, and smoother, it's joined by a subtle but noticeable Saffron and a touch of Praline+Oud(the Oud if you're curious is barely noticeable and it's in the far back, so don't let it dissuade you if you dont like Oud :), its very understated). This is the way it stays for the majority of its wearing, with a more oaky woodiness replacing the Praline and Oud in the far far drydown as it starts to fizzle out. To address the comparisons to BR540, to me its like comparing Hacivat to Aventus, sure they have a very vague semblance in smell (pineapple smokiness in Aventus-Hacivat, and the way saffron is done in this and BR540), but they're both entirely different fragrances with personalities of their own. One last thing I'd like to note is this fragrance is VERY dense, not in the sense of it being a monstrous projector, but when you smell this, you REALLY smell it, it leaves quite a prominent and thick scent trail whilst it's projection stays relatively modest compared to what it could be. On the topic of projection, on my skin I get a strokg projection for the first 4 or so hours, then it dies down to a light-medium projecting scent for its remaining lifetime, with longevity being an excellent 10-11 hours. For the climate I live in, this is most definitely a colder weather scent, (stay away from hot days or you may choke yourself and others out 😭😂), I'd personally wear it during the day if I felt like it but I can't deny that it lives up its lines name, and most definitely is meant to be an evening/night time fragrance. In my opinion it's perfectly unisex but as a guy I feel like this would absolutely kill if a woman wore it, very much an inviting, dark, warm, and seductively sweet fragrance that will turn heads when you pass by. Overall I wasn't expecting to like it too much given the opening (and the fact on paper at first I went noseblind to it within 10 seconds), but it turnt into a delicious Plum fragrance with a gourmand nuance I've yet to experience in another fragrance, definitely one of my favourites from the House and I hope they continue to make bangers like this and their recent releases. 9.3/10

From the first spray, Rouge Chaotique feels like a dark, luminous flirtation: red florals twined with depth and mystery. Underneath, the shadows accumulate subtly: soft oud and patuchuli, and a musky warmth that tethers the exuberance. What distinguishes it is balance rather than extremity. It doesn’t hit you over the head with power; instead, it invites you closer. The florals stay present but wear softly. The base grounds them without drowning them. On skin, the interplay between light and dark gives the perfume life — at moments, you smell woodland, then rose, then gently smoked musk. But this very subtlety might be why Rouge Chaotique is underrated: It’s not in your face. In a niche world of bold beasts and powerhouses, its quiet strength may be overlooked. Complex, not linear. It rewards wearers who linger with it — some might prefer something more straightforward. Underexposed in marketing. It doesn’t have the hype or the classic name-recognition of other Byredo icons, so it’s often one of the quieter gems in the lineup. In short: Rouge Chaotique is a perfume for those who listen, not those who demand attention. It’s seductive not through volume, but through its layered whispers.

A fantastic juicy gourmand fragrance. A very sultry and fun jammy fragrance that (imo) dries down into a rich amber leather note. Not the dry clean leather but a worn cozy leather arm chair, if that makes sense. Some will say it feels BR540 but I disagree. Not EVERY gourmand is BR540 coded. This is very different, it's heavy and spicy whereas baccarat is lighter and airy while maintaining its sweet gourmand DNA. I absolutely adore this fragrance but the one con is that they've added dyes to give it that red color and thus it will stain your clothes. From a marketing perspective, I get it. They want the fragrance to look more potent and concentrated. However, from a consumer perspective, I don't want my shirt cuffs and collars to be tinged red just from my fragrance. Just to note, only spray this on skin. The price is not justified IMO. This is a gorgeous scent but for the size and the fact that it is dyed to look potent, I don't think it's worth it. IF Byredo was more honest about the contents and let the fragrance be without coloring, I could maybe come to terms with it.

I cannot express how much I love this scent. Rich, dark, and mysterious. Living up to its name, Rouge Chaotique is a beautifully chaotic scent that is both warm yet cool, light yet heavy, resinous and smooth. I can only describe it as liquid art! The notes are equally chaotic; imagine oak and pinewood dipped in port wine and plum juice, then left to macerate. That’s the top note. The middle note is simply a toned-down version of the top, while the dry down reveals a light oud blended with dark, concentrated Ajwa date molasses and mulberry leaves. Truly a beautiful scent—an incredibly luxurious one. A 10/10 perfume. Though expensive for the amount/size, the longevity, projection and artistry of the scent justify the price to an extent. It’s a shame this has been discontinued. The new rendition is unfortunately lacklustre compared to this original blend.

Genuinely the best scent from the entire line. Reine de Nuit is a contender but just because they are so similar (the aforementioned scent is much more incense heavy, less fruity). Rouge Chaotique embodies the essence of a sapphic vampire. She’s biting into a tender plum; the succulent juice cascades down her slender throat, leaving a trail of cold patchouli and cassis in its wake. An extremely meady and luscious fragrance with impressive longevity and projection. I still have the mouillette on which I sprayed the perfume, and the scent hasn't even remotely weakened (it’s been a WEEK). Manifesting a purchase in the foreseeable future. P.S. Also, please make sure not to spray this on your clothes. This is a skin scent — there are so many dyes in it that it will stain your clothes.

I thought I was just getting overrun by perfumes during a buying frenzy last week and thus loving the scent immediately. After spraying you get engulfed in a oaky-smokey-oudy warmth. This profile stays on my clothes even after 6-8 hours. I find the perfume thus far quite masculine-unisex. On the skin it becomes a fruity plum-berry scent with citrus, soapy undertones, quite fresh actually with the help of patchouli, which I could smell for at least 7 hours after spraying. The impression it left on me reminded me of the synthetic smell of a red candle, which unexpectedly I liked alot. I love the beautiful contrast of the mix, something I could only discover after wearing the scent a full day. Truly a unisex,multifaceted scent that is definitely not difficult to pull off. Recommend.

Nordstrom made me a sample, and not only did I love it, but several coworkers and friends gave it a wide-eyed 10/10 response. One spray is enough and lasts from before dinner, through a night out, to brunch the next day (how I justified the high price). A friend tried to get me into BR540. It just wasn't what I wanted; THIS is what I'd been hoping for! Rouge Chaotique is the only sugary / sweet-forward scent I've liked, and it's a complete and utter obsession! I think it's season-less, though it's probably not great for a truly hot summer day. While it leans more toward nighttime, I don't see any reason not to wear it for a high-interaction day.

Although I’m usually not a fan of oud, here it’s used so tastefully and sweetened in such an artistic way that it actually brings back good memories for me. Many people say it’s a winter fragrance, but living in Canada, I can easily wear it year-round — especially on summer nights. And most importantly, I can’t stand wearing mainstream perfumes, and thankfully, this one isn’t hyped by TikTokers or overexposed to the masses. Absolute hidden gem.”

I love this scent! As to everyone else’s point the one concern with this is purely its price point being where it is, especially given there are other similar (albeit not identical) options out there at a more affordable price. Definitely opens with an almost thick syrupy sweet and savory plum scent, and during dry down the supporting notes come through more and more ending with an almost black tea and plum combination, enriched by warm wood (definitely not cold). Perfect for autumn or as a nighttime scent.

I am so obsessed with this one. Absolutely wonderful with great sillage and lasting power. It is very sweet, it smells like plum and oud and praline and I can’t stop sniffing myself. It is really pricey though and it stains your clothes which is really bad. Not sure if I want to get a full bottle but I love its smell so badly. Huge love for it’s smell, dislike for the price and the fact that it colors red everything it’s sprayed on.

Classy, luxurious, selective, unique. This scent reminds me of Baccarat Rouge because of saffron, plum, and oud, but this is a more characteristic version of that. There is a chaotique vibe in it for sure(in a good way). If you don't want to smell like somebody else, go for it! PS I do not recommend it for hot weather, performance is fine so it would be overwhelming at summertime.

Absolutely incredible. A perfect blend of modern "yummy" accords balanced with beautiful, sophisticated oud and aromatics adding complexity and intrigue. It is a TRAGEDY that this has been destroyed on reformulation (see Rouge Chaotique 2025). I will be buying an old formula bottle ASAP. PS Not even close to BR540. What a bizzare thing to say!

Might be the best Byredo in the entire collection. Something about this is so is intriguing and alluring. I’m a huge fan of plum in fragrances and this is done so well here. This is different and very unique. Definitely not comparable to Baccarat Rouge at all. Edit: Okay maybe slightly like Baccarat Rouge but this is much better.

Not something I'd wear myself, but it's absolutely beautiful. Perfectly composed; the dark fruitiness, the praline, the oud, they all compliment eachother. It definitely has a dark/chaotic quality to it as the name implies, and I mean that in a good way. Smells almost edible. Would definitely buy as a candle, if they made one.

Opened up saffron oud combo with BCR540 vibe. But this beauty is way more than just its top notes mind you. I love the plum and the way praline blow up midway on my sleeve blew my mind. My tummy actually growled for some praline treats. Wish praline would show up on my skin sprays. Anyway I really love this beauty.

This one, along with Tobacco Mandarin are among the 10 best fragrances out of over 500 I own. This is leathery and sweet and just beautiful and intoxicating. Worth every penny since there is no fragrance that resembles it. It is one of those fragrances. 10 out of 10.

On me its dryer. Sweet almost woody. The saffron holds it together. I love it. i think people need to be mindful of how much of an extrait they spray on themselves. TikTok has really pushed this idea of like dowsing yourself like an atomizer can replace a shower.

A shameless copy of PdM Haltane, at twice the price and with a red dye that will stain your clothes. Come on, Byredo. I love and own Vanille Antique or Tobacco Mandarin...pretty unique fragrances. But this one is 100% a clone. You can do better than that.

I love this perfume but so do the bees. Do not wear this out during the day or it attracts them like a magnet: truly pulls them away from their flowers like a tractor beam. I am sorry to all the bees I have encountered this way.

Spicy plums and and tart casiss with sweet praline, oak and oud. I would go as far as to put this in gourmand category, because of the fruity and sweet nature! I am definitely not getting patchouli and papyrus or anything green and earthy. Saffron gives Rouge Chaotique an amazing diffusion in the air, creates a nice bubble around! It’s a great choice for Byredo to create a line, Night Veil, that’s lasting more than 3 hours. Because Rouge Chaotique is multi layered, intense, flawlessly balanced but easy to wear. It’s not in the slightest a challenging scent, don’t be intimidated by the masculine leaning notes because I think it actually leans more feminine. It’s not sickly sweet or to heavy or too oudy or too earthy from patchouli and papyrus. It’s a sweet fruity scent that smells in the dry down, after every note settles, like prune compote on me. Which I love to eat, so this scent is a love for me! Also, besides being sweet and having the word Rouge in the name, I personally do not see much resemblance with Baccarat Rouge! Now, the price of Night Veil collection scents, is not something easy to “swallow”. For 270€ per a 50 ml bottle it’s a pass for me, I am not there yet with my budget...

In the opening, you get lemon which evaporates quickly, letting saffron and fruit emerge. I’m picturing fruit stewed on the stove with lemon slices and saffron. More of an aromatic than a dessert. Woods and papyrus add a heft to the base that make it appropriate only for cold weather wear. It leans more into the leathery facets of papyrus than the smokey. The juxtaposition of the juicy, fruity notes with the dry leathery and woody ones make this interesting. I find it hard to describe this scent but it has that Byredo DNA that comes from Byredo utilizing many of the same notes across the line. I can see BR540 comparison only in the saffron. BR450 is a sweeter, airier fragrance. This is unisex but I think women would enjoy it more. I purchased my bottle at the Byredo Stockholm boutique on my honeymoon which ended up being more cost effective than purchasing in the US. My husband chose Tobacco Mandarin. Be warned, these extraits are strong! My husband can put on one spray and I smell him in the other room.

2 sprays- wrists pressed together and nape of the neck. Noticeable to me personally, with more sillage than I expected but not much projection. Wears all day. At first spray, dark fruit is most noticeable, with a depth, mystery, and spiciness that keeps it from feeling simply "fruity." As it dries down, there's a hint of smoke and earthy, spicy notes like bergamot, black tea, and a bit of leather come much more noticeably into the picture, and the fruit takes on a kind of sticky, overripe, nearly spoiled vibe that's not entirely pleasant but somehow I still want to smell. The overripe fruit aspect is similar to Beyonce Heat, though I wouldn't say the perfumes as a whole smell alike. Overall this perfume is sexy, confident, and intimate. Sometimes I think it's about to veer into too sweet or too funky, but it never seems to quite get there and is somehow still alluring. It would be nice for a date night but doesn't feel appropriate for an office/day setting and would feel too heavy for the summer.

This is a very addictive scent – in both good and bad ways. I've tried it many times and always returned to spray it on my wrist and inhale it again and again. It captivated me and didn't seem like anything else. Only after reading the reviews on Fragrantica I realized that perhaps the comparisons to Baccarat Rouge weren't unfounded. And it's not even the piercing fruity-saffron-patchouli character, similar to the bright and long-lasting flash of BR, but the fact that this fragrance is just as capable of drilling your brain, despite the declared absence of amber-woody materials. Of course, my beloved saffron is primarily to blame for this – it seems like there's a new level of overdose here. Igniting emotions and senses, the scent of RC can become both your heaven and your personal hell – if you allow yourself more than a few sprays. Please be careful when applying... and enjoy! P.S. I think my 50ml bottle will last me a lifetime - at least it's worth the price!

I am reviewing based off a first impression. I love the colour of all night veils from byredo. Yes they stain, but in my opinion it adds richness and allure to the juice, you can see how concentrated it is. On opening, this fragrance is strong on the saffron, sort of leathery and it reminds me of BR540 by MFK due to that fact. However, as it wears it becomes woody and has a touch of sweetness. You can feel the presence of the Oud, but it’s not overwhelming or dirty, it just adds a bit of body to the perfume. Byredo sells this as an “Oud gourmand”. Personally I don’t agree. While it’s fruity and has a touch of sweetness, it lacks that edible dessert like quality of a gourmand. If you’re looking for an overly sweet perfume, I think you’ll be underwhelmed. Overall, I think it’s a good fragrance. I’m not sure it’s full bottle worthy for the steep price, but I’ll continue trying it and seeing how it changes.

Can I be honest + vulnerable for a moment? I still have no idea what saffron smells like. I've considered buying a bottle of the spice at Trader Joe's for the sole purpose of ID-ing this note/ingredient, but have yet to commit to the endeavor of it all. That said, I instead drew an immediate comparison to Maison Crivelli's Lys Solaberg which also has dark plummy notes. Both have an evening, autumnal feel with sweet, dark fruits. If I had to distinguish the two... LS is more purple-colored in my mind, whereas RC seems more burgundy. Am I being swayed by the color of said juice? Maybe so. But it still has a fruitier, red berry kind of feel which I think is in part to the cassis and the sweetness of praline. Do note the juice is colored and doesn't go clear when you spray it. I have the blotter that's stained pink from the liquid.

I just got a sample and I hate how much I love this because it’s so expensive. The only part of this that I get BR540 is the saffron which I now kind of understand because I picked up a bottle of saffron from trader joe’s to see what all the fuss was about. Rouge Chaotique smells like a really delicious sangria, not boozy just a mixture of a cooked down citrus and fruits and spices. Or like that “Red Zinger” tea. It smells EXACTLY like all of the notes. The plum makes it syrupy, the bergamot and lemon give a zest of citrus, and the woodsy notes feel like they got caramelized and are now edible. I want to eat my arm is my point. This is so good.

Dude this fragrance is lethal. Strongest perfume I own. I smelled this on paper and fell in love. I bought it and it smells a bit different on my skin. I accidentally sprayed too much and got a bit nauseous from how strong this fragrance was. You do not need more than two sprays !! (One on neck or chest, one on wrist) This fragrance smells how the juice looks, red berry vibes, slightly citrusy from the bergamot in the opening, settles into a smokey oud wood scent but the citrus/red berry vibe stays a while. My boyfriend loves this scent, he called it an incredible scent. Overall I really do love this scent but now I know not to overspray lol 🙃

This amazing perfume makes me feel seduced and absorbed by its scent... The opening fades quickly, stays only in leathery aroma of saffron and pervasive black currant. Plums and gourmand accord are recognizable for longer time and make the base much more sweet and playful. On my skin the woodiness is almost earthy and dark. Smells to me sensual and fatal. Started as female perfume, ends like unisex fragrance. If you like Mixed emotions (I do), this is sympatic, less sharp variant althoug there is no doubt about the boldness. Strong projection, lasts for a very long time (8-9 hours)

I tried this in a store and kept sniffing myself the NEXT DAY so I had to have this, since my pet peeve is scents that only last an hour. I don't know what it is about this perfume, it is eternal. But it is strong. This is a complex scent. People definitely notice it and ask what it is, not subtle at all. It's sweet, not syrupy sweet, but the dry down (the second one, after like 6 hours) is more like incense to me. I will probably not rebuy this perfume but it's great for a night out, very special and concentrated for sure, one spray is all you need for half a day.

Good choice even for man - tad on the sweet side, maybe on sweet edge but very pleasant and intriguing. If you are not opposed to sweeter scents this one is definitely fine addon to your collection - full rounded, bit dark and dusty leather, not too much fruity, tad vanilla cookie ended by soldering tin (warmed up older electronics - cyberlike, interesting and curious, earthy metallic notes) give it a try! (And personally I dont get any rouge here, which is fine for me :) In the final hour bit degrades to sticky sweetness.

Pretty nice and spicy oud, balsamic saffron, and praline scent. The most lively out of all the Byredos I have sampled so far. It’s balanced, slightly smoky, sweet, oudy, and well put together with considerable lasting strength and projection. Good stuff, but flankers like this with "Rouge" in their names and saffron in their notes are common these days, so Idk. Plus, saffron and praline have similar facets or are usually mistaken for one another, and using them together in one perfume seems a bit of overkill.

This fragrance is beautiful. Tried it in store and instantly fell in love with it but it reminded me of something I already had so I went home to check before buying it on the spot. Reminds me of baccarat rouge(saffron) and also van cleefs orchid leather (which is plum-y and I absolutely love). But not quite. Best believe I went back and bought it. Not usually a Byredo fragrances fan because the lasting power vs price point usually don’t match up. This lasts me all night but is pricey

This is going to sound like I hate it, but quite the opposite: Rouge Chaotique smells like what I imagine the more glamourous homes of the early 70s smelled like - Brand new wood paneling, the spiced tobacco of a freshly rolled cigarette (unlit), and fruity high-end furniture polish. I can almost feel the shag carpet and tight upholstery of a dusty orange couch. I like it a lot. Would I pay the egregious price of $400 for a bottle of it? ...Maybe someday.

Likey. Warm saffron with sweetness from the plum tempering the roughness from the oud and patchouli at the base. Mellows down nicely over the longer drydown leaving you surrounded by a cloud of warm and a little sexy, well, saffrony redness like a Moroccan wall painted with oxides. Its beautiful and not chaotic in the least but rather sophisticated and lovely.

@lexvanova! Unfortunately it’s not high concentration of quality ingredients that give it the deep colour. It’s purely cosmetic using unnecessary colorants and dyes. You can see on the box with the ingredient listing including a cocktail of synthetic dyes to make it red. At the price point it’s not great to have red stains on clothes... in my humble opinion.

This is a fruit bomb with saffron. No this does not have the BR 540 dna as some mentioned below. This smells nothing like BR 540 at all. Why do people compare everything to BR 540? This is reminiscent of Crystal Saffron but with fruits & a touch of oud. The dry down is better than the opening. I enjoyed this more on a tester strip than on skin.

I get plum cherry but musky that still manages to remain on the lighter side rather than say moist or decadent. It’s rich and passionate, playful yet takes up space. No notes bother me in this one. Give it a wiff. Musky!!!! It’s giving date night or autumn “freshy” (assuming you do two sprays (its pretty strong))

Ah, I get it. Plum, saffron, and oud are a chaotic combination. There's a weird resiny scent according to my nose for a moment. Like mosquito repellent or a gas station, but it doesn't last long. It turns into a pretty calming red scent that's not as chaotic as the opening

Very heady and overpowering. A little too fruity for me but a well balanced fragrance with lots of longevity and diffusion. Just a call out that the red dyes in the fragrance could stain if you’re wearing light color clothes.

A rather harsh opening that leads you to a warmer dry down while still retaining some of that aggression. Spicy, oudy, plum. Mature, mean, unapproachable, a little hypnotic. Seductive and all consuming.

Definitely fruity but also strong saffron almost leathery smell. Really lovely perfume however would be very put off buying due to the colour. It would stain clothing.

This is plum done right. I wasn't expecting to like this so much. Would be a LOVE if not for the expensive price point.

This is the first Byredo that I've had that lasts a long time, and I'm not so sure that's a good thing for this fragrance because it wasn't my favorite. The name is apt because the liquid is very red. It dripped red down my wrists, and I was glad I wasn't wearing white. The "chaotique" part of the name refers to how the scent keeps changing. It starts out like a woodier and medicinal version of vetiver, which I assume is the oud. Then, it cycles between what's at the top -- sometimes the oud, sometimes plum, sometimes lemon, sometimes a saliva-like musk. I can see its appeal, but I don't think it's something I want to smell all day. I'm happy that the patchouli is well-mixed, and I'm curious if it might be one that smells better a rainy day (medicinal ones often do for me). But I don't think I like it enough to save it for another wear. The very long and unscrubbable ending is that medicinal note with nothing else.
