Velvet Haze

This to me was love at first sniff. I agree it starts off weird, almost plasticly in a way memories of santal bush TF soft woody and fluffy with a creamy woody feel and a hint of spice and sweaty skin. It turned positively fresh and airy and sweet , after 3 minutes I knew I needed it. Then I realized this is all about patchouli but in such a modern , non hippy way that I was perplexed at its art, if that makes any sense. The patch gets very strong and comes to the center but it’s hazed with a milky chocolate coconut all wrapped up in a creamy airy musk . This scent to me is compfortable and perfect as a daily skin scent , for a woman and a man equally appropriate . It can resemble the sweet sweat of unwashed skin but in a good way that is. I was searching for a scent like this and I just bumped into it by coincidence yesterday walking by the Byredo boutique. You need to love strange scents and patchouli in order to appreciate this one. Does it smell like Narciso for her ( black tall bottle ) in my opinion NOT but there are stages it goes through where I can’t deny a resemblance ! Narciso was and still is one of my favourite fragrances and one of my most complimented perfumes . However velvet haze is more unique and niche smelling. It’s very fluffy , creamy and sexy ! But it’s all about patchouli and musk . However the cacao and coconut also play a role in this beautiful warm scent. It literally puts a haze around the musky smell. Impressive !

The only scent I've ever truly fallen in love with! It's currently winter and on my (cold) skin the fragrance opens with a gentle milky and musky scent which stays close to the skin and remains that way for a couple hours before unfurling into a soft cacao scent and finally a sweet musk. I find that the fragrance behaves extremely differently when my skin is warm, such as after exercise or if I've been in a heated area all day. In such a scenario the initial milky coconut opening disappears almost instantly and I get a blast of warm cacao radiating off my skin for a couple hours before it fades into a sweet but not cloying musk. I'm not the greatest at identifying notes, but I would say the patchouli is a background/supporting character throughout the opening to finish of the fragrance and it never truly jumps out at me and is not at all offensive. I would describe the perfume as more feminine leaning, though my mum tells me she finds it quite masculine, so I guess the unisex label is appropriate. I never tried NR For Her prior to purchasing Velvet Haze, and while I plan to do so in the future, comments that the dry-down of For Her and VH are identical don't really impact how I value VH. I personally love VH for the milky coconut/cacao that encapsulates the fragrance and without those qualities (such as in NR For Her) I doubt I would give it more than a passing glance.

The first few times I tried Velvet Haze I found it pleasant but not pleasant enough to want to wear over and over and buy a full bottle or even a smaller bottle. I kept coming back to try it and realized that after about 30 minutes of it on my skin, it turns into this amazing fragrance. There is a freshness about it, especially at first, I think that might be the coconut water note and there is an earthiness that comes through later which is likely the patchouli. What I like about several Byredo fragrances is that some of the notes are abstract in the sense that they don't smell completely like a given note. I don't completely smell coconut water, I smell elements of coconut water (freshness, lightness), I don't smell full-on patchouli, I smell an earthiness that's just enough to ground the fragrance. There is a warmth there also and something sweet that isn't completely sweet but just a hint of something heading in the direction of sweet. All together it smells like nothing else out in the world, it's truly art for the nose. I ended up getting a full bottle for $196.99 from Costco online.

This is one of my favorite perfumes. I got a full sized bottle for under $200 from Costco (online). It's amazing how a fragrance can smell like a texture, in this case, it smells like velvet even though velvet doesn't have a smell. It's cozy but only as cozy as velvet can be. If it were a color, it would be a dark fuchsia. Sweet but but only sort of, night time salsa dancing in a heavily decorated dance club without the sweat. Mysterious, different. Fresh at first, I think it might be the coconut water, without smelling like coconut, maybe a tiny bit of abstract young coconut. I'm usually picky about musk and I will not wear anything remotely masculine or anything that resembles body odor in the least bit. This has a musk note but it's not the super fresh musk and it's not the animalic body odor musk. It's almost hippy, almost like incense but not either of those things at all. I'd say it's hazy and I'd say it's wonderful.

I get something salty/sweet from this which I really enjoy. Velvet Haze is soft and cosy and maybe a little fuzzy so the name is perfect. I love the juxtaposition between this initial burst of tropical brightness contrasted with some woodier powdery notes. The musk in VH is fuzzy and gorgeous. It is a lactonic fragrance, uplifting at the start leading into a patchouli mid and an earthy musky dry down with hints of coconut and cacao. As with many releases from the house of Byredo, the performance is not great. Longevity is minimal, lasting up to 4 hours on skin and all day on clothing, with an intimate trail. However I don’t mind too much with this particular fragrance as it is subtle enough for daily wear, and yet unique enough to pique my interest. Those types of smells tend to get a lot of wear in my collection. I’m currently testing a sample but I think I’m going to need a full bottle! A new favourite from Byredo.

True story. This scent blew my mind, off the rip. I love the complexity and dichotomy between the tropical coconut and the earthy patchouli. The hibiscus adds a zing that adds an almost metallic scent buried in the coconut and patchouli. I spray 4 sprays, so now I'm lit up from the scent. Running to my laptop, I scour the internet to find the best deal on this costly masterpiece. An hour later, still searching on the computer, I realize that I can't smell the scent anymore. Actually, what I am smelling right now is a skin scent that smells like dirt and is very flat. Where or where has the fragrance gone? Such a trippy experience. Just glad I didn't buy it. Later - Six hours later, I just can't stop sniffing the sample. I think I'm addicted, lol. I'll have to try this one again. Maybe layering it? I'm philosophically opposed to layering but it's worth a try for this one.

My first impression of this wasn't the best - it was a linear patchouli that wasn't unpleasant but not interesting. I was testing with a few other fragrances so I'm glad I gave it another try. Now I think it's absolutely gorgeous. It is velvety, deep but also a little tropical without going sweet. The coconut, tuberose and ambrette musk create this beautiful texture that I have smelled in other Jerome Epinette fragrances that I find really alluring. Nothing goes too far in one direction, the notes work together to enhance velvety aspects of each note. The tropical feel from hibisicus and bergamot are anchored by the deeper patchouli and hints of cacao. Its such a beautiful blend of what could be polarizing notes. I definitely recommend sampling this a few times to really experience Velvet Haze. The best performing Byredo fragrance I've tried to date.

Love at first inhale. Coconut and tuberose elude my nose; Velvet Haze opens with an almost medicinal bitterness, yet pleasantly intriguing. As the bitterness fades, it transforms into an earthy and intensely sensual warmth akin to the deep resonance of a cello. Patchouli and musk, I suspect, weave this hypnotic spell. The fragrance unfolds so warmly on my skin that I get goosebumps running from bliss, and I keep wanting to inhale it repeatedly. Velvet Haze is profoundly earthy. My husband likened it to a raw cellar, yet the pleasant and sensual quality astonished him. I can see the vibe resembling EDT Narciso Rodriguez, but the notes differ. Narciso feels like warmed, exposed female skin, while Velvet Haze is more earthy and witchery. Both are intensely sexy, and I adore them, but they are entirely distinct to me.

Such a lovely scent! This is something I never knew I needed. It's like a white v neck t-shirt, something that's always so comfortable and goes well anywhere, at anytime. As soon as I sprayed it on my skin, it felt sooo lovely, sweet, and so cozy, something I have never felt from any other fragrances. It just made me smile right away. Cacao and coconut are very prominent, which radiates slight sweetness and warmth. Musk and patchouli shimmers in the background, giving a slightly powdery, woody scent. Also, the longetivity and sillage is wonderful! Lasted more than 8 hours, and people noticed the scent when I was talking with them. So happy I found this lovely scent, definitely going to buy it soon. For anyone looking for a cozy, comfortable scent, please try this one! Would also smell lovely on men too.

I LOVE this scent. But I can't wear it all the time. So often the words buttery and creamy are used to describe tuberose or sandalwood. But Velvet Haze does not have buttery elements, its entire form feels cast from gorgeous, cultured, unsalted butter. The lactonic scent, warmed but not quite melted, is the base of this scent. Imagine this creamy, light-yellow surface sprinkled with shredded coconut, warm, bright fuscia hibiscus petals and whole, intoxicating cacao pod pressed into it with patchouli oil drizzled like honey a top this high-calorie butter and tuberose terrazo. Everything is viscous. Cloudy. Thick and sweet. Not candy sweet, but more like toffee, or salt water taffey. Its a scent I want to wear and close my eyes and just breath. Deeply comforting.

I was surprised at the opening; it is so bitter and almost acetic at the beginning. I never experience that with Byredo DNA, and I love the brand. But when it settles down, it's pure magic. I can't stop smelling my wrist. It is cosy, woody, fruity, and bitter at the same time. Someone mentioned Angel by TM, and yes, there is some very subtle resemblance to that perfume, but in a much softer way. Personally, I would never wear Angel by TM, it's too sweet for me. I was afraid of cacao note and coconut, because I am not a fan of either of them, but in this blend, they are not prominent. Someone also mentioned that this could be the perfect scent for a date, and I agree. It stays very close to the skin, it is warm, inviting and kinda sexy.

Opens with a boozy, smoky patchouli-coconut rum. Soon the creamy, peachy osmanthus reveals itself- lifting this gorgeous, dirty, boozy patchouli into a dusty cocoa powder accord; making this feature a pure olfactory work of art. I can sense the tropical hibiscus just below the surface. The sustaining notes result in a beautiful, smoky patchouli musk + osmanthus fragrance. Very reminiscent of my beloved Narciso EDT- but with an unparalleled depth to it. The tuberose mostly eludes my perception, but everything else is there. Peach bellini with a shot of coconut rum in a haze of smoke, almost cannabis like, and that cocoa accord for the first 30 minutes- which I can't get enough of. So well done 🙌🏻❤️

I have a "dabber" sample of this scent. I had to really slop it on to get it to last any decent amount of time on my skin. It reminds me of something I had in the 70s that I loved - it was one of those inexpensive solid stick fragrances, and I think it was simply called "Rain" or something like that. Well I loved it so much I suppose that's why I like Velvet Haze; it conjures up memories. For that reason I probably can't judge it fairly, but it seems simple and light and pleasant on my skin as it takes me back to a younger, less jaded self. Also I tended to slather myself with Hawaiian Tropic oil and lie in the sun back in the day, so the hint of coconut in Velvet Haze triggers that memory.

I feel like one of the lucky ones, as my nose seems to pick up what this fragrance is supposed to feel like. To me, this is NOT similar to Lovely or NR. I do not get the florals that I find in Lovely and NR. I get mostly creamy coconut, bittersweet cacao, a soft but earthy patchouli, and a light background of cashmeran and musk. It is an extremely cozy, beautiful cold weather scent for me. Longevity and projection aren't the best (as I've found with most Byredo), but I wear fragrances for me and not for others, so it works (still get +8 hours longevity). Remains one of my favorites in my collection.

A unique and interesting scent from Byredo. The hibiscus offers a fruity quality but the ambrette and musk mellow it out. The patchouli hangs like a haze taking a backseat to the coconut and floral notes. This is a fragrance you really need to smell to experience and would not be a safe blind buy. I found that this turns a little too musky when sprayed on my skin, so I spray it on my clothing and it lasts all day. This is the daytime year round fragrance that I have been looking for. I don’t mind the high price point as I cannot find anything that smells like this outside of niche brands.

the second i sprayed my sample of this on, i knew i would want a larger bottle! this fragrance feels like the best of all possible worlds: warm and fuzzy, sweet and floral, milky and musky. it makes me feel like i've been wrapped in a very high-quality, expensive sweater, one that was gifted to me from a very rich, chic older woman with short silver hair who works in the fashion industry, one of those wool sweaters that doesn't itch at all, the kind that says "DRY CLEAN ONLY" and means it! it smells like the seasons changing, which i'm longing for desperately right now.

This perfume smells like a dream! It's a bit sweet and super cozy. It's one of those fragrances you would wear to bed or would be categorized as a "white t-shirt perfume". It has a lot of depth and I do love it. I only have a sample and I've been going through a lot of debating on if I should buy the full bottle or not. While I do really want this scent in my collection, I don't think it's worth the price point even at a discount. I'd much rather do a hunt for another soft, sweet, cozy coconut perfume.

Velvet Haze is extremely potent and thick mixture of dark expensive cacao, quality patchouli with ambrette and flickering, creamy nuances of non-sweet coconut. It makes the presence and impression straight away, - autonomous, extravagant, sleek and cool, like a vampire. Haze is hiding its fangs, but they are definitely somewere there...love it to bits! P.S. I can't even bother to comment on majority of reviews below, - a lot of nonsense when comparing with Rodriguez or Parker... *doh*...

I really enjoy this a lot. It smells like clean laundry to me. My 15-year-old son tells me it smells like "people think the ocean smells". It's nothing particularly special or groundbreaking, but it's cozy and warm. I likely won't repurchase - I'm not the biggest fan of Byredo fragrances - but it lasts 4-6 hours on my skin and the sillage is alright. Those things are really irrelevant for me though since it's mostly an 'around the house' scent for me.

Coconut and earthy patchouli with a hint of cocoa and musk. The initial notes are sharp, but it gets creamier and more sensual as it develops on my skin. I can picture myself wearing it on a date, feels so intimate, sexy and daring at the same time. This is a nighttime perfume, a true weapon of seduction. Mix coconut, cocoa, a Coco Mademoiselle-type of patchouli and some Narciso Rodriguez for her Edt powdery notes and ...you have Velvet Haze.

Another hit from Byredo in my book. I am NOT getting NR Her from this - but can attribute they have similar musk-chouli sweetness vibes - but they are in no way dupes. This one is sweeter (not cloying) and certainly more peach/coconut-y. Velvet Haze reminds me of the beach - Warm, soft tropical hazy days. It is lovely and unisex - perfectly blending warm - sensual with dry and sweet. I'm not picking up the cacao but hear others do. Lovely.

The first 2 times I wore this it smelled VERY similar to Narciso Rodriguez for her. Then I wore it a few more times with NR on one arm and this on the other. While NR lasted longer, this smells much higher quality. NR is kinda synthetic but still enjoyable, while this is creamier and has the lightest touch of sweetness (from the cacao pod or coconut?) that makes it kinda magical. I keep wavering between it being a love or a strong like.

I love this and I will always miss it. I love patchouli, I love it in bottle and on everyone else, but on me, it always turned sweaty EXCEPT with Velvet Haze. Rounded out by the coconut and the perfect musks. Slightly sweet and very airy. This is surprisingly one of my longest lasting perfumes in my collection. It's the tortoise, not the hare. It takes it's time, unbothered and determined, slow and steady, in for the long run.

If Cadbury's did a flavour of their Highlights chocolate drink in Bergamot complete with mini marshmallows to sprinkle on top, this would be how it smells. The chocolate note stood out to me most, but it's not thick or sickly. It's mild, with a touch of sweetness that the bergamot balances well with. I don't get coconut at all. It's a really nice warm, fragrant, comforting scent. Definitely one of my favourites from Byredo.

Velvet Haze falls in the middle of my comfort zone, like the lovechild of Beach Walk and Music Festival. The coconut is more aquatic than sweet, the cacao is dry, and the patchouli is smooth like Coco Mad Intense. The musk is a hazy cloud around me, but one I am not anosmic to (unlike NR). Angel also came to mind for me, but I hate Angel and love VH. Longevity is excellent for a my-skin-but-yummier scent.

My gf got a sample of this and Rose Noir when she bought Blanche. First I thought this smelled odd, but when smelling it again, I think it is very unique and attractive. Not as good as Rose Noir, but definitely amazing scent. I have no idea about longevity as I have not tried it, since I think it is a bit too feminine for me, and would more like it on my gf. I would say it is more of a night scent.

Currently sampling this. On paper I could not stop sniffing it for days. The floral aspects shine through quite strongly at times. There is something super intriguing, deep, complex about it. I see this scent visually as a beautiful multifaceted purple gemstone, something that I cannot stop looking at (or smelling in that case). It‘s got many surprising sides to it, a sexy, edgy, delicious blend

Smells so much like Lalibela by Memo that I love so much but Velvet Haze is a less strong in my opinion. But still very nice and feminine and pretty. It’s milky chocolaty, coconuty and a bit musky. I can smell patchouli and as much as I don’t like patchouli, it doesn’t bother me here much. I would rather go for Lalibela for the better projection and longevity power. Price is about the same.

Your edgy cousin on a tropical family vacation who insists on wearing a leather jacket and boots even when its 30 degrees out. In the best way possible. I love this to death, and in the years Ive owned it, just seems to surprise me even more. Creamy and warm, yet sweet and smoky, yet also somehow fresh enough to be versatile in different situations.

I'm surprised that other reviews aren't emphasizing how chocolatey this perfume is. It's primarily patchouli, but it's really very cocoa-heavy especially on the dry down. I have had friends also comment that I smell like chocolate when I wear it. I love this perfume, it's very warm and comforting. My only complaint is that it wears off too fast.

most byredo scents that I have looked at or sampled have been boring to me, but I velvet haze is everything i dreamed it to be. Smokey, slightly woody, but the best way I can describe this scent is an intense softness. This scent holds a lot of nostalgia for me. It feels like being a child and experiencing fall/early winter for the first time.

This one was interesting. I currently have a cold and the boyfriend tested this on my skin. Nothing to write home about at lunchtime while we were shopping but around ten pm the boyfriend demanded I buy this. Going to test it when I can smell again. Buying anyway for the boyfriend. Really it's a present for him ;)

Picked up a bottle of Velvet Haze immediately after testing it in store. I absolutely get the Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDT comparison. Just a bit creamier and longer wearing. The coconut is soft and clean, reminding me a little of the dry down in Creed's Virgin Island Water. Beautiful!

This is my favorite perfume forever. There’s nothing that smells as magical as this. If you love musk and patchouli you have to give this a try. Every note is blended to perfection and comes alive on your skin. Hour after hour you’re enveloped in this otherworldly haze.

Went sniff hunting today & after damn near sniffing the whole store this one caught my attention & i knew it was redundant to sniff anymore. I had found the member of collection in that moment. This is more unisex in my opinion, and can be pulled off by males.

Musky gourmand done right. This leans feminine, the cocoa notes show up the most on my skin followed by coconut and ambrette. I tried this 3 years back, and now and I still cannot get enough. Unlike many others, I did not get any tuberose from this.

This was love at first sniff for me. Perfectly blended, smooth and a bit earthy, addictive and unique. I mostly get coconut and patchouli. Huge compliment getter on me. Lasting power is decent. Definitely a winter fragrance. 9/10.

in my opinion one of the best perfumes byredo has to offer! so addictive from the first smell and very long lasting and hypnotic. some might find it too strong or nauseating. perf for a night out and strong layering

Coconuts, mature ones with the fibrous brown exterior. Patchouli, bitter cacao. Creamy smooth white florals subtly melding things together. Very special and addictive... this is a love

Creamy-musky. I don't think coconut when I smell this. At all. I like it. I use it fairly often. I've gotten the compliment(?) that this makes me smell like sex -in a good way.

Way overpriced, because I adore it. It's just a masterpiece. The most wonderful and splendid experience for my olfactory experience. I just love this one❤️❤️❤️

I didn't get much typical coconut in Byredo Velvet Haze, at least not anything cloyingly plastic like some coconut-flavoured products can be. Instead, it's creamy, warmly sweet, slightly honeyed and animalic, evoking a bowl of hot milk to me during the first 20 minutes. Then, something vaguely inky and metallic, yet still somewhat velvety, starts to infuse the hot milk and cools it down. It felt familiar, but I wasn't able to name it until 1 hour later, when it firmly dominates and the sweet milk becomes merely a facet of it: a clean, vegetal white musk, halfway between the musty one in Byredo Blanche and the brighter, more floral one in Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDT. The main difference being the addition of the sweet milkiness, Velvet Haze feels kind of like a semi-gourmand variation on the clean white musk theme. From then on, Velvet Haze doesn't change much anymore. Sometimes, I can smell a bit of coconut milk within the mix, but it's mostly just abstract velvety milky sweetness among the inky white musk. I don't detect any distinct bitterness of cacao or patchouli on my skin, although the spikiness of the later was detectable during the middle phase on the paper. I get a medium sillage during the first 3 hours, and it stays close to the skin for another 6 hours. Without digging into any musical or cultural background, the name itself actually summarizes well how Velvet Haze smells to me: a velvety, hazy white cloud of clean inky musk with a subtle creamy sweetness, which fits well into the abstract, modern artificial style of Byredo fragrances that I tried so far. I would recommend it to those who enjoy clean, abstract fragrances, especially to those who'd like a warmer, more creamy version of Byredo Blanche or Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDT.

For osmanthus lovers, this one is worth chasing for the smell of real osmanthus but it is not a soliflore perfume. The overall feeling is heavier, warmer, but still spring appropriate. This is beautiful, and as someone who likes smelling osmanthus bushes around the neighbourhood, the osmanthus in this is not too far off in my opinion. This is similar to Narciso Rodriguez for her EDT but that one is colder and brighter and this one is warmer, and dimmer, but not worse. Velvet Haze has more patchouli, and osmanthus than NR EDT. The drydown of NR EDT feels 'designer', I love the opening of it; whereas Velvet Haze is more patchouli heavy and to me quite osmanthus centric, with other notes adding some additional sweetness and nuance that I cannot say comes from this note or that note, it's well blended. I detect a little bit of coconut, and I would guess that the sweetness comes from bergamot tuberose and osmanthus but it's all just guessing. I think this also draws similarities to Flowerbomb, the patchouli behaves similarly, but Flowerbomb has an added more peachiness and more prominently, jasmine. That is the main distinguisher for me. I don't prefer Narciso Rodriguez EDT over this one or Flowerbomb, and vice versa. They all need to be tested, currently none of them are better than the other for me. Osmanthe Kodoshan is not similar to this at all but also prominently features the note of osmanthus, in a pretty unique way. It is again not a soliflore though. I recommend testing that too if you're on an osmanthus hunt.

I didn't want to believe that this smelled anything like For Her, but I guess you know what I'm about to say. It does. It could certainly be a flanker. I get 3 distinct phases with Velvet Haze: 1. For the first 20 minutes, it smells like the honey note that I perceive in For Her is amplified into something that is more like an intense, creamy, honey nougat with nuts. Perhaps the cacao creates that nutty effect? I don't smell anything chocolatey about it at a any point. 2. The heart, which faded too soon for my liking, smelled very strongly like coconut milk. It was really nice! At this point, it did not resemble For Her. 3. The last and longest phase reminded me of For Her. The original For Her was my signature for a couple of years when it was first on the market. I used to wear the oil version, which was POTENT. It only stopped being my signature because the oil was discontinued. I tried the most recent EDT, and it's so weak and dull compared to the oil. Velvet Haze smells quite similar to that recent EDT. A bit flat, vague, and stays very close to the skin. I would say that despite the ratings for MUSK being very high, I do not find Velvet Haze nearly as musky as For Her. Bummer that it's so much like For Her that it's hard to really discuss the fragrance on its own merits. I do like it ...since I like For Her!

I'm giving it up to Byredo. This house has produced some of the most unique fragrances in recent years. Velvet Haze is easily one of the most unusual and intoxicating fragrances. I'd put it in the same camp as Mojave Ghost and De Los Santos–herbaceous, natural, earthy. Despite coconut, hibiscus and juicy fruit bubblegum tuberose listed in the notes, Velvet Haze is anything but sweet. It's almost medicinal, green with a powdery finish. I'd call this masculine-leaning, but it's got some great unisex, androgynous appeal. The drydown is bittersweet–almost savory. It's pretty patchouli-forward. The musk reads as skin-like and dusty, even a little mossy or tree bark-like. If De Los Santos is a Southern California neighborhood, and Mojave Ghost is a desert road, then Velvet Haze is like a forest or a natural park, like Joshua Tree. Not a match for my skin, since earthy fragrances can be too dirty on my chemistry. But it's so fascinating that I can't help but like it. I say it's worth a test.

The sweet coconut was a surprise twist in this. Then comes the fuzzy, creamy musk backed up by smooth and dry patchouli. There is definitely something tropical lying underneath. In the drydown it smells remarkably close to NR for Her which I love. This is a bit softer and sweeter and creamier. A bit rounder if you will. It definitely took me by surprise. I will say if I was comparing them side by side, it would take me a minute to pick up on the subtle but unique differences. Not surprised to see the osmanthus as I get that fuzzy peachy floral mingling with the coconut.After wearing this for a few hours I finally get the cacao which is what I believe gives that dry feeling to the patchouli which stayed relatively smooth throughout the ride. I wasn’t expecting this to smell ...well like this. Went in blind. Pleasantly surprised and I really enjoy it. JE hits again for me. He can’t seem to do wrong by my nose.
