Black Beard

Black Beard is a real male testosterone bomb. It is no coincidence that the history of the fragrance was associated by the creators with pirates. In the meantime they also warn you not to expect sea salt flavored notes of coconut! It’s a stunning fusion of a classically elegant and bold, masculine fragrance, this is the true essence of masculinity. Yellow silk stockings imbued with lemon leaves, decorated with wormwood leaves, absinthe bitterness accompanied by the aroma of petitgrain. Petitgrain is an oil obtained from the young branches and leaves of bitter orange, or Seville orange (which is a hybrid of pomelo and mandarin), by steam distillation. Although this scent is classified as citrus, it also has notes reminiscent of lavender, rose and woody scents. It is used successfully in aromatherapy because of a sedative, stress-relieving and sleep-promoting effects. Behind the initial bitter citrusiness, you can almost immediately feel countless deeper shades and some clove spices as well. Getting closer to the fresh heart of the scent plenty of floral scents become dominant. At first they are just gently sneak, then suddenly with the lavender on the lead, after they will attack us unstoppable with the aroma of rose and geranium. Of course tobacco can also be felt in the background, because how weird a pirate would look like without tobacco. At first tobacco just waits patiently, after suddenly getting stronger to make the chord deeper and darker. As the scent of the flowers fades, the creamy sweetness of the combination of tonka beans and patchouli is especially matching with the tobacco. The earthiness of oak moss and the warmth of ambergris also play an important role in the dry down. Of the four Calaj perfumes this one is perhaps the most complex, a real transformational artist. This beautiful perfume constantly transforming on our skin, keep pushing us deeper and deeper.

Thoughts on a sampling... * Opens like an awesome citrus bomb with the Petitgrain, Orange and Bergamot. * Followed by a pepperiness that is provided by the Basil and Artemisia. It is all deep and in your face potent. * The citrus is not your typical fougere fragrance but more like essential oils kind of like O/E by Bogue. * About 30+ minutes in, the whole thing changes direction as Lavender enters giving it even more spice and eventually (after an hour) takes over the citrus. * Till this point the silage level is through the roof strong. * It blends and transitions quite nicely with peak pungency at each stop. * The base notes are nonexistent for me with the possible exceptions of the Moss and Musk about 4 hours in and the Tobacco after 7 hours. * Unfortunately for me it begins to peter out becoming a skin scent by the 4 hour mark. By hour 5 a very weak skin scent. * However the oils, though weak, stay impregnated and that skin scent is still detectable 10 - 12 hours later and even longer on my shirt. ** Conclusion: If it sold as a 100ml my math says it would go for $340.USD and in my opinion would need to not become a skin scent till at least 6 hours for that price. However it is only offered as a 50ml and so while it is still overpriced it doesn't seem as bad. Since I very much like everything about this Black Beard I'm going “full beard” on it and springing for a bottle. It just smells too good to pass up.

Wow! First FB taste from Calaj. Weird spin on an old school. Sweet musty sweat - in a pleasant way. Oily lemon, Bergamot and petit grain. Accented slightly by a musky dried lavender in the background. And what smells like bird seed or black sesame/sesame in the back ground. Just as if you were Blackbeard basking in the sun, sweating beard with a parrot on your shoulder and a whiff of gunpowder from your flintlock on your waist! A waft makes me flit between thinking it’s old school barbershop (somewhat reminiscent of Houbigant Duc De Vervin Extreme and Tres Bien Institute L’Italien) and then an exotic spice scent the next. It’s enough of a tweak that you’d want it in your collection if you like old school barbershop, spice and talc powdery scents. Also hooked on Love Toxic too!

Black Beard by Calaj. Orange dominates this fragrance from beginning to end. Not the bright crisp fruity scent of orange, no, no, no. It's the musty, sweaty, smoky, swampy, funky, moldy, odor that encapsulates the dried yet still slightly moist orange rind. The same sensory effect is found in other fragrances like, Boucheron, Aqva Amara Bvlgari. Tobacco adds another deeper level to this smoky, testosterone infused, swampy, sweat bomb. Pungent Patchouli adds the woody touch to make up the dominant notes of this very heavy, long lasting, explosive cannon of a fragrance worthy of the name Black Beard. It's pungent, it's musty, it's long lasting. High Roller likes it.

This could not get any better. I didn't look at the notes when I smelt it for the first time. It's zingy, zesty, and spicy. The herbs combine very nicely. Basil adds a unique touch to the scent. I couldn't pick it out at first. To me, the bergamot and herb combination seemed like ginger. It has that same spicy quality. Normally, I don't like Fougere scents, but this is something else. Mossy tobacco gives it a certain depth and darkens the whole composition. Beautifully blended. This will be perfect for spring and summer. What bliss! Miguel's work never ceases to amaze me.

Black Beard Calaj is a fragrance that exudes virility and has an undeniable backbone. It seamlessly blends a nod to the past with a modern twist, creating a scent that is both timeless and current. Black Beard is a good addition to any man's collection. Arrr! UPD: However, the price is 180 euros for 50 ml. leaves me on the fence. I will buy a full bottle only if the scent calls again and again. UPD: I layer Platinum Egoiste on the top of it.

It is a different perfume for the difficult aromatic taste. One spray is enough to caress your breath. A perfume suitable for cold climates. As noted below, it quickly becomes a skin scent but that lasts all day. I really enjoyed it. Not sure if I need to own it yet but it could grow on me. A unique concoction. I've been appreciating Miguel Matos' skill often lately. Quite a few of my faves are his work.

Test- I must start to say that Calaj house has the most unique perfumes that I smelled! This has a lot of lavender, for a men is a very fine fine scent! Beautiful floral done in a masculin way! I like it, will try it on my husband!

Its spices first sniff its reminds me in the spice bazar in the Middle East

So I would say I am not the most adept person when it comes to all the notes just how it smells off my skin and the opening and drydown. one this does last a long time so longevity is great, But the overall scent to me is overpowering and I can't truly be a person who would wear this anytime. It has a very incense vibe to it like legit burning incense I get the feel of what they were going for because it does mimic like a gunpowder vibe if you were to imagine it. But it's super harsh and has no sweet notes to balance it out imo. As an art fragrance lover who enjoys pirates I am sure it might be up your lane but I don't see this pleasing many people in public or in general. I will wear it more to see if it grows on me but I've been on and off wearing it for these past 2 days.

Natural, plain and offensive. The lavender is dry and simple. It smells natural which is nice, but it’s out of place in this fragrance. I wouldn’t call this sour, but it’s has some of putting zing to it. Tangy and unsweet may be a better description. I was expecting a manly scent with heavier tobacco and musk. I get orange, bergamot and lavender from this. I think this is a fragrance for someone who is rude. You will be odd looks, the same a rude person would see as people visually react to their out of place comments. I was far from the mark. This was a scrub off fragrance. It reminds me of essential oil handmade soaps. Made with pleasant natural oils, but crude and off putting. I wouldn’t call that the pirate twist. I was hoping for a more gritty and empowering scent.

Generic chypre in the same style as Eau Sauvage, YSL Pour Homme, Cerruti Pour Homme, Armani Pour Homme, and so on. Not entirely sure why these classic chypres are still being copied, especially if there's nothing modified or altered within the composition. Ultimately, these overpriced niche attempts come off as lackluster, and overall leave a bad taste in my mouth.

This is a peculiar fragrance on me mainly because i get an overdose of green, dried basil and lavender combined with tobacco and amber. And that's pretty much it. The basil is overpowering everything and in combination with a very dry lavender might be to much for others. The tobacco is also dry and it all gets balanced by the amber. I get no citruses or florals in this one. Unique, maybe...high quality and performance, yes although nothing spectacular that i haven't seen from others... blind buy worthy, definetely not... price worthy, absolutely not. For the price you can get better scents but in the end it's all up to you. Edit: after a couple of weeks all i can say is: what a joke! It's like mixing basil esential oil with lavender oil and that's it. No citruses, no tobacco, no nothing besides these two ingredients. This is a rip-off considering the hefty price you have to pay. For that price one might expect something of higher quality and artistry. This is not the case.

Hay, lavender, & tobacco ash.. Black beard is a blend that i have sniffed before! i don't remember which was the one, but i very much did sniffed it before! maybe "Fougère Bengal" by Parfum D'empire! but still not sure yet. It has that sweet lavender burst, mixed with bergamot, with doses of tobacco ashes, hay, carnations, & oranges, I'm not sure if i can detect some amber, tonka, or roses, but i guess i can get that oakmoss, musk, and artemisia. This is a daring blend indeed, and i think it could be fougère Bengal that i am getting out of it. The note from Calaj written above is really presenting the blend quite well. Beautiful.

The first splashes, and a memory that comes to mind, immediately, in no uncertain terms: my father shaving and bringing his face closer to me, a little girl, in search of a tender kiss. The times he went out to dinner and dressed up. I could smell that smell. Represented perfectly with this fragrance. I can only say that he moved me, he filled me with nostalgia. And I call it a masterful creation if it managed to have this effect on me. Simply thank you.

My God! The votes for similar ones are absolutely cringe. Musc Ravageur?! Participe Passe?! Fougere Bengale?! On planet Gozu probably. This one is a terrible attempt of some call "perfumery". Absolutely horrible. Smells like all the aromatic plants came together in a soup left on the stove. "The Emperor's new Clothes" for people who think they're "cool". No, bro! You smell like a wet shitE while wearing this.

According to the site, below is the note breakdown Top notes: Orange, bergamot, petitgrain, artemisia, basil Middle notes: bulgarian lavender, geranium, rose, carnatium. Base notes: tonka bean, patchouli, moss, musk, leather, tabacco, amber. Not sure what I feel about it. It reminds me of walking into a spice market. And I smell the lavender in the background.

wore it a few times and it is not for me the early "pissy" opening is not great the stated notes made me think i would like it in the same vein and much better is Evergreen Dream from Galagher

These new bottles are horrible. The prior bottles looked wayyy better. Im not sure if these are reformulated. Update: I have a full bottle for trade or potential $ pm me.

If this one is too aggressive for you, hunt down Ember by strangers; they smell very similar to my noes except Ember is subtler
