Cuirs

"Exquisite and unique; a blend of fungal wood and suede leather." Cuirs is Sonia Constant's brainchild for Carner Barcelona, a Spanish niche perfume house founded by Sara Carner in 2009. It is also arguably the most talked-about fragrance in the whole line, perhaps because of its similarity in scent with another cult classic Black Afgano by Nasomatto. Indeed, like many who have mentioned about Cuirs, it is a beautiful fragrance. "Pretty" however, is definitely not the best word to describe it, because for sure it is not meant to please the masses with the usual overly fruity or aromatic notes. This is exclusively for lovers of genuine agarwood/oud and high-quality leather fragrances. The three main notes of Cuirs are oud, leather and sandalwood. It opens on my skin with an explosion of agarwood, and it's not the kind of synthetic overly sweet oud one would get from designer fragrances such as Versace Pour Homme Oud Noir. It's unmistakably pungent and smoky, the decayed/rotten woody feature of a special fungi-infected wood that is preciously coveted in the perfumery world. But unlike many other oud-based fragrances, the oud in Cuirs is blended with creamy sandalwood. As a result, while it has a pungent undertone, at the same time it's smooth and delicate. On top of this is the leather, one of my favourite notes of all time. Truth be told, like many have mentioned, I couldn't detect the leather at first and it made me wonder why leather is officially classified as a main note. But when I used it in a cold climate for the first time, the leather flourished and that's when I learned why I couldn't detect it. It's not the type of pungent black/brown leather that I am accustomed to (especially after owning a bottle of Dior Homme Parfum). It's the light leather type known as suede, and its lack of pungency is likely to be hidden in the shadows of the pungency of the oud instead, which is somewhat the main star of the fragrance. As for longevity and sillage, it's a beast. It stays on my skin well over 12 hours even in hot climates, and the sillage, according to my friends, goes as far as one metre away. Now comes the key question: does Cuirs smell like Black Afgano? Indeed it does, but as expected, there are some subtle differences between the two. Black Afgano, simply put, is Cuirs on meth (it is a pure parfum extrait, after all). In a way, Black Afgano is like the eccentric brother of Cuirs with a conspicuous personality that may rub people the wrong way. There are traces of coffee and hashish in the fragrance too (I highly doubt that there's weed in it; it certainly doesn't smell like it). That's where the differences stand out between the two: Black Afgano is more potent and quirky, while Cuirs is more refined and elegant. Personally, between the two, I'd choose Cuirs any day. I love Cuirs to bits and I think it's heavenly if you wear in cold climates where the oud, sandalwood and leather (especially the leather) will stand out. For all oud, leather or generally heavy scent lovers out there, be sure to give this one a try.

Finally took the plunge!!! Carner is one of those rare brands where their line up is just not typical. They are fantastic in build and performance and hmm... yeah they are relative attractive price points. So, I’ve sampled all the range many times. I own Drakon, Rose and Dragon, Volcano, Megalium and now this. It’s a super smooth creamy saffron inclined suede/car interior leather. Indeed, despite my fussiness and relative disinterest in leather scents my purchase was inspired because it’s extremely similar to Thameen Regent Leather (designed to emulate the plush leather in a Rolls Royce) which I love but is more expensive and whilst impressive is much poorer than this in longevity and a touch poorer in sillage. So this ticks my box for a dominant photorealistic soft leather with saffron, woody cedar, touch oud, beautifully bodied out with tonka and hit with a tinge of warm spices. A warmer version of Carolina Herrera CH Priv which I also bought as it’s a slightly brighter version of Regent Leather being an EDT. I own a number of scents revolving or skirting around leather but for mostly leather centric I have Frederic Malle Rose and Cuir, Daniel Josnier Green Leather, Miller Harris Rouge Leather, Liquides Imaginaires Buveur De Vent, Tauer Lonesome Rider and Nishane Suede et Saffron. These respectively give me a leather dominant spin with Rose, Apple, Red oily Spices, Sweaty Old Biker Jacket, Painted Vinyl Leather Jacket and a spicy strong fresh tanned suede. This is leather how most people would find... on your couch or in a car... sublime...

This is a unique and compelling fragrance. I don't really like leather or oud and avoid fragrances that are considered mostly masculine so I don't know how a sample of this wound up in my possession. And yet, I really like this. To my nose there's something almost fruity and definitely sweet underpinning this. It's not obtrusive but it accentuates a different aspect of the wood and leather than most other fragrances with those notes. I wouldn't call it feminine exactly and I'd probably never wear it in public but I'm enjoying wearing it myself and I'm not sure it would suit a man better. Maybe it's something about how it's reacting to my chemistry but this fragrance has a mellow gentleness to it that I don't usually associate with any of the main notes. I keep looking at the note pyramid trying to find the floral. It smells very nice whatever the note pyramid says. Edit: I wound up buying this. There's something about the black oud-y leather with an undertone of sweet fruit that I find weirdly addictive. Apparently I'm not the only one. My fifteen year old son, who officially hates all my perfume, came sniffing around when the package arrived and had soon claimed it for himself. I thought it would smell terrible on him, being far too "mature" and masculine. But it kind of blends with how he smells and the overall effect is pretty darn good.

I remember it all too well.At 18 when I first met him,I couldn't understand who he was,or who he tries to be.He made me coil back,trying not to show my notion of disgust. From the nozzle,he smelt of a deep spicy scent that was a bit of a reminiscent of Coco by Chanel.But on my skin,he smelt nothing of but dusty spice and stale urine. Fast forward to the present,now 22 at age,maturing and I am becoming more understanding.I moved miles away and you travelled far just to be with me because I wanted to smell you again after those past 3 years. I am slowly falling in love with you.The burst of that dusty spice made me realize that it is the saffron.And as you slowly tame down and caress me all over with your cloud,I get that violet smell that greatly reminds me of the violets from Guerlain's Insolence.A bit sweet but not candy-sweet.As it makes it way over to the it's final stage,I get that gentle leather smell that smells so sophisticated like a Tuxedo suit with zero wrinkles.And on the dry down,it's a beautiful leathery,unburnt incense and soft post-burnt oud wood that lingers alongside that luxurious creamy and wet powder. Fragrances that you hate before,might end up as a love today.We just need to be understanding of what their character is,of who they truly are and by then,we'll be able to appreciate them fully.Cuirs is one of them.

I REALLY love this but have found out that this scent really changes over time if it touches fabrics. My winter coat that has a stretchy fabric right around the wrists picked this up and turned cloyingly sweet. NOW this sweetness transfers back onto my hands EVERY time I wear the coat. It now changes every frag I wear on my hands and drives me crazy, lol. I'll try washing it out of the cuffs and maybe they can handle ammonia? Anyway- amazing leather fragrance with major sillage and longevity. Very nice, subtle oud that just adds to the leather and is equal to the leather. Perfect balance of those two notes, the sweetness IS in the background and I'm not certain what it is(probably the Tonka) I like it on skin and this is a prettier, more wearable version of Black Afgano (as everyone says). What it turns to on clothing over time is NOT good imo, so definitely do not intentionally spray on clothes. It'll transfer if touching,regardless, and it becomes a sweet almost gourmand frag(blech for me).

Beautiful woody leather fragrance created by Sonia Constant who created Tom Ford Ombre Leather (EdP & Parfum). 💜 The cap, incidentally, on this one tells you everything you need to know, it's a dark woody fragrance with a soft tobacco note and smooth leather holding all the notes together. It's official description is "Redolent with nostalgia for a bygone era of artisan ateliers where pipe smoke filled the air fusing with the scent of freshly tanned leather" and I must say this is accurate as the combo of oud and guaiac wood in it gives that prominent pipe smoke in it! Very pleasant smoke not sharp or harsh. ♨️😌 I really love the scent profile on this one, though I wish the leather accord would've been more prominent, as after all it's called Cuirs. Also wish it was a bit more potent, as the performance is nothing to write home about (as is the case with her two other creations Ombre Leathers) A video review is also available on my YT ▶️

This is a lovely soft suede leather. I like to think of Cuirs as a referential leather especially useful for introductions to leather notes for those who are turned off or scared of heavy leather fragrances eg. some noses interpret leather as gasoline-like etc. Due to this, if you're looking for a strong and bold leather (not regarding longevity where this performs well), Cuirs is not the pick. However, this trait makes the fragrance far more unisex and wearable in more settings. I've noticed the Amyris becomes increasingly more noticeable as it ages. For me, this is a plus as the marine quality amplified with the violet note is very reminiscent of an Ambergris tincture that I adore. Carner every so often has a trio gift set in 15ml quantity (iirc) where this fragrance featured at least once and I was able to give a smaller size to a dear friend who was formerly terrified of leather and now can't get enough!

The dark notes are perfectly balanced by sweet coziness. The scent starts off sweet and resinous. But the opening is not offensive at all. For the spices in the top notes are quickly softened by woods in the middle and by ambergris and oud in the base. Oud remains smooth and discreet (but it’s nonetheless omnipresent with its mild sweetness). That why leather is not shadowed and outweighed by all the ingredients. However, leather unfolds only timidly and remains very soft. It isn’t really the strongest scent note in the perfume composition, but it gives this fragrance its liveliness. Thanks to the interaction of woods, amber, musk, oud and spices the scent remains mild as a whole, without losing its spiciness and vitality. The perfume is very long lasting on me. Over time, it becomes only softer. Perfect for all those who like warm woody oriental scents.

Lovely Composition. I dont know if there is oud inside but I get bitter woods/sandalwood. A little balsamic labdanum...sweet Tonka bean and leather on the other side. It is a lighter/more soft Version of Black Afgano from Nasomatto. Sillage and longevity are moderate. Nasomatto is stronger in both fields. This is for men and woman, a classic one which everyone should fall in love with. A so called " SOFT OUD/BALSAMIC COLOGNE" If you dont like woody scents you should avoid this one. For example Wonderwood by CtG or Tam Dao by Diptyque are same direction as CUIRS but more musty and darker. Scent: 8,5/10 Sillage: 7/10 longevity: 7/10

Well, I get all the comparisons to Black Afgano, but at the same time I kind of recent the eternal “dupe of Black Afgano”, “weak Afgano” comments the same way I bloody hate some creators of art and adore others. The working musicians will always be cooler and better to me, than “THE artists”, because the presens of self awareness, self control and humbleness is what, in my humble opinion, makes a great artist, not arrogance and pretentiousness. The same here. I do like Black Afgano, but Cuirs in all its controlled, toned down, though a little weird, smoothness, pulls on some of my heart strings.

I love this. People say its very similar to Black Afghano, which I haven't smelled yet. This doesn't really makes sense to me since this definitely smells leathery, which is not a note in black afghano. Black afghano also apparently has a strong cannabis note, which this definitely doesn't have. Edit: I tried black afghano, and cuirs is a much less skanky, cleaner, and less potent black afghano. I think smelling black afghano changed my nose, because I now pick up some light animalic touches in cuirs that I couldn't smell before.

Cuirs Carner Barcelona transports me each time I wear it. It's different each time but there is some distinct and unifying quality that I have yet to pinpoint. I like that mystery. From a scent profile perspective, I get the saffron immediately but it transitions to a long-lasting complex woody that is moderately strong in longevity and sillage. Oud and sandalwood figure prominently. There's an air of gravitas to this one but it can also be worn smartly and casually given the right setting.

This is intoxicating! Addictive! Stunning! I’m a woman and out of all the carners I kept blind smelling on the blotters THIS is the one I couldn’t get enough of (although I have just bought 3 others besos, tardes and rockstar and they’re all incredible) I think this is unisex and will wait til autumn 🍂 if I can hold out that long (and palo santo too ;)) ! A word of warning, this is a can’t stop sniffing scent. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm

I think it’s very true that this fragrance has similarities with Black Afghano. But it would be too boring if this fragrance was just a lite version of BA. If BA is aggressive, intoxicating and informal, Cuirs is rather formal and calm, but still powerful and confident. Wood, leather, with some very distant sweet and musky notes. It lasts several hours on my extremely warm skin so don’t worry about the longevity.

An old-school leather from someone from a family of Spanish leather tanners and who probably grew up with the scent of finest leather they supply to the likes of Hermes and Jitrois. Cuirs has warm noble woods in the heart: complex oud, dry cedar and creamy gaiac infused with saffron. The drydown is a beautiful array of smoky resins and woody materials with a sweeter edge: labdanum, patchouli and tonka.

Incredible how much this smells like Black Afgano upon initial spray but that only lasts a good 15 minutes & here's where the difference kicks in. Cuirs has a more sweeter vibe on the dry down & doesn't last nearly as long as BA. Hands down a great frag in its own rite & definitely FBW IMO... projection is incredible at around 8 feet & longevity on my skin is an easy 7 hours. GREAT STUFF!

Almost sold this shortly after I bought it. Hung in there and my patience paid off. One of my top ten of the hundreds I've tried. Tried this before even sniffing Black Afgano. Definitely share similarities. Have and love both. Just plays beautifully on my skin. Highly recommend this as the office version of BA.

Cuirs is a great fragrance from Carner Barcelona. Sometimes OUD can be overwhelming but in this fragrance it is blended the right way. Sweet and spicy. It does smell like Black Afgano but sweeter not as strong. It is a perfect fragrance for the Fall/Winter.

Ok so this is definitely a lighter more wearable version of black afghano .. I would even dare to say a little better imo I've got quite a few compliments on this one! Where as black afghano I got ppl yelling me I smell like a black licorice stick??!!

I ordered a sample of one of the other CB scents, and this was an extra. I'm so happy they sent it to me, because I don't usually like leather scents. I love this one though...a little sweet, a little spicy, just perfect. Straight to my want list!

Wow oud here is so well blended with sandalwood. This smells so rich I can feel the labdanum making their mark present. There is no way to go wrong with this fragrance. I sort of like this: Smell: 1000/10 Projection: 10/10 Longevity: 10/10

Pretty soft leather opens with saffron.One of the softest saffron leather scent ever created from the top note to its dry down.longevity is pretty good and projection is fair. 4/5 Age;+30 Formal and casual events

I love it, yet not sure about purchasing it - since it's unclear if it's long lasting or not... TBH it feels like Carner Barcelona perfumes aren't long lasting in their majority...

Definitely similar to Black Afgano but with creamy sandalwood and patchouli. It's also much easier to wear than BA. Performance is stellar as well. 10/10!

Very good dark rich leather scent, has good balance of creaminess and sharpness between sandalwood and gaiac wood. Leather and oud are prominent.

Wearing this one today (sample) and already received two compliments from people who are also into fragrances. Can't complain so far.

It is amazing. I do not know if I am the only one but I clearly smell the good old Gucci Pour Homme I DNA amped up.

Cuirs is aptly named - a nuanced leather scent that brings to mind Nasomatto Black Afghano while being cleaner and more straightforward. Dry, slightly smoky, spicy and musky, Cuirs is a satisfying, high-quality leather scent that is cohesive despite its plethora of notes. Cuirs opens with a lovely spicy accord led by saffron - the ideal opening for a leather scent. Slightly sweet caraway enhances the soft spices of the opening, and the woody-leather accord that dominates this scent follows closely. I get smooth, dry cedar and some Australian sandalwood initially, followed by dry, woody oud. The oud is muted and palatable, not animalic at all here. There is a slight smokiness that underpins this scent, dark and dry, adding a slight edginess. Patchouli adds an earthy quality as it progresses, complementing the woods beautifully. As it progresses, the leather accord slowly develops in the background, formed by amber notes alongside the oud. I get labdanum in particular. There is an earthy, woody undertone that enhances the leather accord, and a nice muskiness that ties it all together. I get soft coumarin too, adding a smooth roundness to the base. There is a sweet amber note in there too, providing a subtle counterpoint to the dry darkness of the oud. It fades to a musky amber skin scent, leathery and woody until final fade with the balsamic quality remaining. Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting. A soft yet realistic leather scent, Cuirs is beautifully rendered, and wearable due to its lack of skankiness. A unisex cold weather scent, I really liked this, despite it not being particularly unusual. Good quality and wearable. Leather by way of wood. 4/5.

I've always had a taxonomical problem in recognizing all the different incarnations of "leather" as such. It's usually easier to spot the new shoes or car seats, aged handbags and leather saddles described by the members of this community. But here, leather? Cuirs reminds me of ink. It's the slight medicinal pungency of the saffron in the beginning, combined with harsh sandalwood and a musky-green violet note* that I recognize. Ink also means comfort to me. In the end, this is a comforting fragrance, which deserves more recognition by its own and not only as a Black Afghano alternative because, as already mentioned many times, it quickly gets into a different direction and, most importantly, sets a different mood. BA tends to be unsettling, provocative by design: a statement in the context of a niche market that just began to unravel at the time of its launch. Cuirs takes the same concept and makes it more of a personal scent, not so much the loud attention-seeking statement that is BA. That harsh woodiness being tamed by a musky base with a complex structure, on the verge of becoming sweet, ambery, even floral, but never actually getting there. I agree it can become boring, but then I would always come back to it after some healthy break. This just means you shouldn't overdose. *Violet leaf note is such a great note that always comes unexpected, see how it combines with oud in Agonist's Dark Saphir, see it shining in Fahrenheit or Narciso Rodriguez for Him, not to mention Grey Flannel with its unbelievable muskiness.)

Cuirs is a very clever showcase of a leather accord, with woods and spices complementing and extending the leathery aromachemicals. Cumin and other spices burst into the opening, almost animalic as leather and dry woods join in after minutes. A woody base begins to build - warm, dry, spiced and almost tannic in nose feel. The leather here is dry, even sueded, and has facets of earthiness and lit tobacco. This leathery heart scaffolded by woods is manly, pungent, skanky and almost impolite. I love smelling it. Strangely, Cuirs begins to smell fresher in the dry down. A persistent blanket of cold woods & dry amber lifts the scent, and oud-like skankiness begins to recede. Cuirs forms a tight leathery bubble of decent longevity. The smell doesn't travel too far, but is rather potent within arms length. Longevity is decent too. Overall, a great smelling leather scent that is masculine and dry. Spices and woods cleverly used. Cuirs might not be wearable for everyone, but signature worthy for the right gentleman.

#952 in my "Tour de Fragrance" Carner Barcelona continues to impress me. I've tried "El Born", "Rima Xi", "Tardes" and now "Cuirs" and every one of them is a fine scent. They are on the whole subtle and complex, though more moderate than I would wish. For me the notes really making this distinctive are cypriol and caraway, and it doesn't have that hint of hash pipe you get from Black Afgano that for me ruins an otherwise good scent (once a cop, always a cop). But it also doesn't have Black Afgano's assertiveness. The difference between this and Liquides Imaginaires "Fortis" is in the smooth warmness you get in this from the labdanum and amber, but I would still say if you already have Fortis this would be redundant. I think this is car pool, elevator and small office safe. An intimate scent for date night. Nothing beastly or offensive here. But I also think there are more than a dozen better leather scents I already have on the shelf, and if that is what you're after this wouldn't be my first choice.

Cuirs by Carner Barcelona is fragrance that contains oud that I can actually love! This oud is that deep woody resinous blend I have been searching for. The leather in this fragrance is superb and pairs perfectly with the oud. The guaiac wood gives Cuirs a well-rounded smokiness, the caraway adds some spice, and lastly the saffron and amber bring about this beautiful sweetness. The longevity and sillage are phenomenal, I get compliments throughout the entire day from both men and women. I originally got this as a random sample in a previous fragrance purchase and my extremely picky father who dislikes practically everything in my collection except two other fragrances even said, “That smells really good!” I knew I had to get it! It cost me quite the chunk of change for a full bottle, but it was well worth it! I absolutely love Cuirs!

Smooth leather-oud! Cuir smells as if you entered an office in an old-money mansion. The walls are lined with precious cedar wood, the couch and armchairs are made of natural supple black leather. As you wander with your eyes in the dimly lit (but not dark) room, there are sandalwood ornaments, an unlit incense burner filled with real oud chips and a small china plate with some caraway biscuits. The room is intriguing, smoky (probably the odor of tobacco and incense is lingering on the furniture), but is not intimidating; you feel warm and relaxed and enjoy inhaling the smooth blending of the aromas. Probably this office belongs to a very successful classy man, but his strong- charactered wife or daughter won’t look out of place either.

This is a very nice fragrance. In between like and love for me, a solid 4 out of 5, thus on the honor roll. :) The scent itself is very clean; you can wear it under many occasions (safe for office). Not really a seductive scent, but more pleasant. Think it's a spring and fall fragrance, and more day than night for me. Doesn't come across all that woody to me, nor is the leather particularly pronounced, it's more of a blend. Sillage and longevity I have found to be slightly above average. As mentioned, a solid 4/5 for me. Enjoyable scent.

ok so this is a spicy oriental masculine niche for beginners. If Fortis by LLI or Black Afgano or any of the masculine Andrea Maack, or Nishane etc are all too much for you, start here It's right up my alley for a winter male perfume, I'd love this on a man I am also very partial to powdery violet note, which I normally love in overtly feminine perfumes for myself, but I get it here among the masculine smoky saffron, resins, patchouli, leather, oud etc and this little powdery floral is just...mmmmmmm

It smells powdery, with a leathery(sude) and woody backbone. Sort of like violets, sandalwood and premium suede. I know there's more than just these notes, but that's how I perceive it. Plus, it's very, very well blended, and it's hard to pick up individual notes. Oud? Animalic? I'm not getting any. There's just a hint of resemblance to BA and Fortis. For me, Cuirs smells like a tamed and more wearable version. It's a very tasteful and modern fragrance which exudes effortless charm.

A woody leather that is very wearable and inoffensive without being the least insipid. The oud is clearly present but soft. Neither as pronounced as in Arabian inspired ouds like the creations by Rania J., nor as hidden as in many western ouds e.g. Creed Royal oud. In the beginning there is a refreshing spiciness that I refer to Caraway and I love the way saffron rounds off the sharp edges and contributes to the softening of the woody notes.

One of the best classy office scents, sweet, smoky leather main note. Nice, very discreet oud, light and soft but noticeable. Good performance (moderate longevity and moderate to weak projection), but it's not strong enough. You can find much better scents besides this. I highly recommend it for office use, all year round. If you like strong oud and arabic character, stay away from this.

Yeah you can draw some conclusions. It is similar to black afgano, but: Instead of being full amber and based this is more airy and lighter. Instead of being resinous sweet this is more spicy like Duro. Plus the longevity - we all know the performance of BA, and Cuirs is missing the greens top. Nevertheless, good, well priced composition :)

It's very strange why many compare it to Black Afgano, for me these are completely different stories. Black Afgano is a super-niche strange crazy beast cocktail, which I can only wear in a very, very rare mood - there are some notes that makes me sick. Cuirs - is the softest, even creamy leather blend, very wearable for every day.

A lovely leather suitable for nighttime or essentially any time you wish. It’s not a loud leather but a subtle and seamlessly exotic creamy leather, not unlike TF OL Parfum. Yet not exactly identical either, as this is more office safe and casual imo. But sexy, just like its successor.

Clean leather, woody backbone, no skanky oud. The saffron violet combo gives a purple, a bit acidic, very floral and fruity vibe with a bit of incense. Unisex, but if I had to choose leaning masculine. Clean, not animalic at all. Doesn't blow me away, a good, a bit floral leather.

Here’s a smooth leather fragrance. One of a few. Nice, fresh, soft leather jacket; balanced with a nicely synthesized oud accord, notes of sandalwood, violet, patchouli and labdanum. Spicy in a good way. The rest fades into the background to my nose. Unisex. Decent sillage.

This to me is like a mild version of Black afgano. It’s more easy to wear and the fragrance don’t get so potent like BA. I scent leather and oud. A little bit of caraway. After a while the other components come thru. A nice “easy to wear” scent

Oud? I don't smell any, but I do get a lot of cypriol and a sweet, buttery black leather and saffron, with a layer of dry spice. It almost has tobacco-like nuances at times. Very elegant and seductive on either sex I should think.
