Volcano

Volcano is the last sample from my Carner discovery set, and it is easily one of my favourites. I haven't been bowled over by the myriad of freshies offered by this house (due in part to personal taste), but I adore the likes of Botafumeiro and now, Volcano. Volcano is a rich, dark rose scent, bolstered by spices, woody oud and a balsamic amber base. It is fairly classic in style, but well-composed with high-quality ingredients - a beautiful example of the genre. Rose is one of my favourite notes, but this is objectively good. Volcano opens with a rich, realistic rose note, slightly jammy and complemented beautifully by the warm spices that follow, notably nutmeg. The balsamic amber undertone emerges early, initially light and green-tinged like elemi, but paving the way to the rich, resinous, slightly leathery drydown while complementing the rose from the early stages. As it develops, a cloud of patchouli emerges, marrying beautifully with the rose. It is multifaceted - initially earthy and slightly herbal, becoming more balsamic as it develops, marrying seamlessly with the amber accord that forms the base. The oud note follows, dark and dry, more woody than skanky, again serving to complement the rose. It also paves the way to the resinous amber base. It becomes slightly leathery as it dries down, but remains dry. It becomes increasingly musky as it fades. Sillage is strong and longevity is long-lasting. A unisex dark rose scent, Volcano is best worn in autumn/winter. It is beautifully and cohesively composed - rose is king, and every other note here has seemingly been chosen with the express purpose of complementing it - to great success. Middle Eastern amber-rose-oud, interpreted for western tastes. 4.5/5.

Yes it has rose and oud and we might feel a bit tired of that duo but then there are a lot of combinations that we could say the same about. The thing is the materials has been here for a long time and and is here to stay so instead I tried to focus on the bigger picture. And what I found was an exceptionally well blended creation. Hat of to Mr Fernandez. Yes it might not come of as something unique if that's what you're looking for but if you pay attention to the weaving of the materials you smell something that has been crafted with precision and love. Does it smell like a volcano? I wouldn't know but what I do smell is an opening that is bursting with energy - simultaneously juicy and glowing of spicy roses and green tinted resins. As the eruption subsides all the notes mellows and softens in perfect harmony. Much like the flowing and pulsating golden lava. So in that sense the concept and the scent has aligned quite marvelously. The end result is one of the sexiest scents I have smelled and currently hold in my rather large collection. It's however not a raunchy sexyness it's more of an assertive natural sexiness without any obvious bedside associations. So maybe sensual is a more accurate description... Fantastic!

Black and Red is what comes to mind when I smell this. So, I disagree with the nay sayers. Volcano works as a description for me all be it a sweet one. Beautiful deep powdery (nutmeg), smoothed out by Oud and broadened out with laudanum and benzoin creating an almost oily leather like playing field. On top a bright ginger (not too much) and equal sweet rose providing just enough to flavour what might otherwise be a high quality but somewhat generic feeling oud scent. Strange that very few people have voted for Oud when for me it is the main player. It has awesome longevity (lasted all night) and decent Sillage. It comes across as a lower volume version of Oud Essentiel by Guerlain - a bit sweeter too with no leather and less oud. I converted my free Twisted Lily sample into an FB order - it can sit happily next to my Oud Essentiel for when I want to impress the ladies rather than when I want to show up the boys in the smelly gym locker room...

This smells dark and quite satisfying to me. The labdanum is thick and hefty but does not stomp out the delicate sanguine petals of the rose. The bright spices seem to pop, sparkle and dance around without actually settling in on top of any other notes. Rather simple but beautiful to my nose. Did the company not send out free bottles or something? I am quite suspicious of these dismal reviews, though I am also open to the possibility that I have poor taste. This was a blind buy for me and other than the unexpectedly short-lived performance on my skin, I have no complaints. For what I paid for it I'd be rather upset if I didn't love it, doubly so if I couldn't sell it due to it being so roundly shat upon.

I’m not usually a huge fan of rose pud frangrances but for some reason this was an immediate love for me. When I visited the Carner Barcelona boutique (a must visit btw!) I tried almost all fragrances and this was one of the few clear standouts for me! The rose is prominent but not overpowering. It starts spicy, dark and woody and soon becomes resinous but dry with a slight hint of sweetness. Smells very luxurious, alluring and mysterious. Dark and seductive, perfect for a night out. Ideal for the colder weather but I also wear it during the warmer months at night, when it’s not too hot. A must try from the brand!

I was fascinated by this scent after I smelled it on a colleague. I loved it enough to buy it straight away. Nutmeg in the opening is mixed with rose & resins. In a weird way it's smokey, spicy and sweet at the same time. I understand why it was called Volcano - it has a "dirty", dusty quality to it. It smells like an inside of an old wooden wardrobe in an old orthodox church. Or an old wooden confessional in an old cathedral. It changes depending on the season & temperature. I like it most in November, when it's wet and foggy. I get complimented quite a lot when I wear it. Great projection.

This is a fierce and fabulous perfume. It’s powerful and hot like a volcano. It stays on my clothes forever, lingering like a dark and sweet dessert. These are not mentioned in the notes, but to me it feels like dark chocolate and vanilla. The initial blast is spicy and full of wood. Lucky for me the nutmeg and rose are not too prominent. That usually makes it smell cheap and forgettable. This one is not one you’ll soon forget!

Got this as a sample and had to buy a bottle, it’s beautiful. Starts off really rose like then mellows into spices and Ood but always with a hint of rose. It smells divine and dare I say it but it’s one of the nicest things I’ve ever smelled. Longevity is also above average

On me, the rose stays all day. It’s wonderfully blended and soft oud, incense, spice, and rose from beginning to end. I find this unisex to slightly feminine. I’ve been getting these lovely wafts of fragrance for over 12 hours now. Just amazing.

Now this is unique. An oud rose fragrance thats spicy ?? Whaaaat !?! This is beautiful unisex and a stand out. Sillage and projection are pretty solid for about an hour then it mellows to about an arms length. Im sold !

More Aromatic and less sweet Oud for Greatness. Extremely well done and great for cooler temperatures. Unlikely to offend anyone. Shukran Habibi!

This is everything that i imagined OfG would be. Well balanced, balsamic,dark, rose and spices at the same time ...just perfect...

I thought it would rock my world, but in the end, only felt the faintest tremors. Sorry I couldn't resist. This promises much, and is very clearly an attempt to tread into the same outrageously mineralic-hot-floral territory of Zoologist's T Rex; and it's partially successful in that daring mission, but just doesn't have the chops or the muscle to make it happen over a day's wear. This opens with a bracingly weird, boldly medicinal tang of almost-harsh cypriol/nagarmotha, which billows out like some bizarre medicinal fumigation, nearly mothball-like, which I love but some might find alienating and needlessly challenging. There are some really kooky geology-class notes in there - ash? rust? dust?, also straight from the T Rex concept; and yet (again) like T Rex, there's a strong dose of spicy-dry florals which bloom out beautifully once the cypriol ebbs a bit. It's all singeing hot and warm and dry and I really really like it (maybe I even lava it?) for the first hour or two, when it's simmering away nicely. Rumbles of discontent set in after an unhappily short while, though, as the interesting stuff begins to die back and what's left is a still-very-pleasant, but not nearly as adventurous, generalised sweet-resins-rose aura with much less character. And worst of all - like many Carners on me, it's a weak wet thing on performance rather than the raging furnace I could truly love. Firm sillage (arm's length) for only an hour or two, and overall longevity no more than four or five. What a letdown. So in short - if you like T Rex but find it just too much, and want something almost as odd and molten-hot, but more manageable and weaker (not much cheaper though), then this might be your ideal mountain to climb. For me, a very near miss - I'd happily wear it any time - but just not worth the money.

#993 in my "Tour de Fragrance" Got this as a sprayette. Generally I don't go for Bulgarian rose. Comes off "grandma juice" to me. But this improves very quickly as the rose dies down. Aside from that, this is a oudy scent in the Middle Eastern style (with the rose and all), but it's a very Western oud, and doesn't have all the saffron so many oud scents have, which combined with rose notes makes them grandma juice all the way for me, which is why I'm not on the Initio "Oud for Greatness" bandwagon with most everyone else (and there are a half dozen cheap clones of that anyway). This smells a lot like like Maboussin "Cristal Oud", but performs better. Cristal Oud performed so badly I considered it a waste of my money. I had the same experience with Korloff "Royal Oud." But it was also inexpensive, so not a tragic blind buy. Same with Franck Olivier's Oud Touch. I would put this below Montale "Black Aoud" in terms of performance (a girlfriend loved that on me, but I didn't and I gave the bottle to her), but this is a more interesting and complex scent. So I'd make a choice between this and Montale on that basis. You want all day performance at a lower price? Get the Montale. You want a scent with more complexity that you're willing to respray midday? Get the Carner. This is car pool, elevator and small office safe. Fine for a dinner date, but by the time dinner's over it's a skin scent unless you really lay it on, though for me that makes the rose so dominant in the first 15 minutes it's unattractive. So timing is everything. It's not a bad price for what you get. I have so many scents like this already that it won't be a bottle buy for me, but if you don't have an oud scent, and don't want to smell like an elderly woman, this is a good one to start with.

I don't understand how people can compare this with Oud for Greatness. They have nothing in common, OFG is a Saffron scent with metallic undertones and it's not an Oud scent, this one is Rose Oud scent without Saffron. This one is well blended harmonious concoction with Patchouli and leathery undertones. How someone can assume that OFG would be like this if the notes are totally different? There is nothing special in this scent but it's well blended and it's pleasant. Rose is not so strong and all other notes are smooth and polished as well. I only have a sample of this one and it's not interesting enough to wear it many days to write an in depth review. It's beautiful though. Roses, resinous Oud with leather and Patchouli. Carner Barcelona is a brand that is worth dipping your toes in The quality of their work is outstanding This is my 4th fragrance that I tried and something tells me it won’t be the last It’s a fragrance that reminds me modern perfumery To me almost nothing is prominent I know it’s strange and there is an explanation for that I believe the more synthetic the scent is it gets harder and harder to pinpoint notes that are available in nature And this is what happened here when I found out that the strongest note is supposedly rose I was shocked It has nothing to do with natural roses Nonetheless its still an experience you should at least try Performance was good To my collection it holds no ground

Warm spicy rose oud. As rose ouds go it’s very difficult to find something innovative however the execution is good and the spices last quite some time. For me the best offering I’ve smelled yet from the brand. Used to be very expensive but now since the 100ml format came out at the right discounter can be found at around $120. Fair enough relatively to the price of other offerings in the market. It’s just the last few years I perceive less and less value from the majority of choices available. In the end this is a like for me because it’s executed so well regardless of price. The new 100ml format has made this worth considering.

Modern version of YSL Nu for me - just with the edges sanded back a bit. Highly enjoyable for those who love spicy oud rose scents.

Nice fragrance, sweet and sure to get you compliments. It's not ideal for daily use but perfect for events or date nights.

think Carner may have recycled it's Rose & Dragon formula, fluffed it up a little bit et voile, we've got Volcano.

Fiery opening, dry-down leans a bit more feminine for me, mainly because of the rose and patchouli combo which I think I’ve smelled in other women’s perfume, it’s an recognizable smell.

I don't like to write only negative comments without being constructive... but there's really nothing special about this perfume. It's unimaginative, and just smells like labdanum with chemical rose (oxide?). There are no images conjured in my mind of volcanos upon smelling this. A bit of a let down, as Black Calamus and Sandor 70s aren't too bad.

What a disappointing letdown. After seeing the rave reviews I decided to order a tester to try it out. Immediate first spray was a very synthetic rose that was akin to cheap hairspray, followed by the sour smell of cigarette smoke. There's definitely some interesting notes going on with the fragrance but the smoke and synthetic rose dominate the entire scent. After the drydown, all that's left is a rose with moderate smokey spicy vibes. After 2 showers and 12 hours the smell still won't come off my skin and it's making me nauseous. This smells wayyyyyy too much like an old chain-smoking grandma that's had this perfume sitting in the back of her cabinet for years and all the tar has slowly worked its way into what was once a very feminine perfume. I'm a man that was seeking more of an earthy, masculine, volcano like smell with a hint of roses but this couldn't be further from that, definitely not a volcano by any means. Advise against purchasing unless you're a 60+ woman who loves to smoke Marlboros.

I received this in sample form, and I'm testing it in summer/humid environment. I don't have a lot to say, but I do feel I needed to comment and at least say Volcano def doesn't deserve the hate it's getting here. Yeah it's prob overpriced and doesn't have the greatest performance, however the performance is at least solid - longevity is high and projection is average. It certainly has a very alluring and pleasant scent. Something in it reminds me of something kinda generic, maybe it's the nutmeg? IDK. This isn't my typical scent profile that I'm usually chasing (kinda in a current plateau with finding big bottle worthy new frags lately). I do have to say that IMO it's more on the femme side of the fence, but it's such a nice scent that I'm smelling my hand OFTEN lol. Kinda hard to explain this but I find it much more appealing when I catch "wafts" of this in the air, vs smelling it directly. I don't think I'm gonna buy a bottle of Volcano, but I certainly don't regret buying the sample 👍 **EDIT** After a few more wearings. I like it more and more. I do believe this to be unisex now, not mostly femme. It has a very striking scent/impression, similar to Xerjoff Neo (not very similar to Neo, just impressionable like it). And I am considering buying a big bottle of Volcano now, funny how things change **EDIT ~ 7-1-21** I just received my bottle yesterday and loving it. Received a compliment from drive through lady, which tells me the sillage CARRIES 😃. Really i don't know why exactly i doubted this frag so much... Comes off as a slightly simple unisex frag but man there's something special goin on. Also to set the record straight - longingly is great and performance is slightly above average. It's my excellent summer find 👍 ***Additional 7-7-21 Note*** In my book, this is certified beastmode performance. 3 sprays and i literally got 2 compliments within a few hours. One compliment was from a woman like 30 feet away in a store. She demanded I tell her what i was wearing basically lol. So performance is excellent 👍, and for that, it's still expensive for 50ml, but it's a keeper !

I know rose / resin / patch has been done a million times but I'm loving this. Patch is strong and earthy, very natural, and oud is just enough to make this smell like when you walk by the Arabian Oud perfume shop on oxford street. Oriental, arabic rose oud resin. Something soapy in the background too but in a really posh way. You really can't go wrong with this combo in my books, and the balance is there - not too strong on any one note, warm spicy, almost creamy, but rose and oud dominant enough to really give it a nice authentic oriental feel. Papyrus and vetyver make it woodsy dom on the dry but ample rose and resin keeps this very unisex throughout. ** 200 samples up for swap in 10+ bundles UK - check my customs and pm me as I have many more not on the list **

I love everything about Volcano except for the rose. The rose is lovely but it's just so boring, especially when the rest of the composition is so striking.The dry, back-of-your-throat-burning tinderbox quality of the ginger, nutmeg and patchouli really sets it apart from the sea of jammy, heavy rose & oud fragrances, though it also means the longevity isn't as intense. The rose just seems like it's in the wrong perfume; I would love a Volcano that does away with niceties and dives further into the dark.

This stuff is really really amazing. A very dry, spicy and woody rose oud combo with some resins. It’s a weirdly familiar scent that I’ve encountered before. I can’t quite put my finger on it but I feel like it reminds me of my grandmas house. The old varnished wood of her house. It’s very comforting and nostalgic for me. A super successful blind buy for me!

I don't understand the references with Oud for Greatness (have both) and those don't smell similar at all. That said, I find this to be a beautiful dark scent, very dark rose with the Oud and Patchouli, creating a very elegant, sophisticated and romantic scent. Something I would recommend for a date, it will definetely be different and memorable.

Different oud pink bulgarian rose hits unique frank floral like Torino 22 memorable that sticks. Sooo nice, airy, signature scent, the uplifter warm wood oud type, not an oriental. First encounter with the house, first acquisition, hits so well every time. Carner's black line headliner and in the top two Carner's after the otherworldly Drakon.

LOVE LOVE LOVE! DONT KNOW WHY PEOPLE ARE BELITTLING THIS ONE, NOT A FAN OF CARNER USUALLY BUT THIS IS REALLY SPICY, SLIGHTLY FLORAL, POWDERY GORGEOUSNESS!! WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTING??!! UNIMAGINATIVE? IT CERTAINLY MAKES ME IMAGINE OF A VOLCANO. SOME PEOPLE CAN BE FRAGRANCE SNOBS AND EXPECT TOO MUCH. 8/10

This is what happens when you mix a vanillic and resinous amber with this chocolatey patchouli that produces a true 'Warm Spicy' rich, thick Amber scent. It's deep, dessert-esque with a dark sweetness. Winter written all over it. Chanel's Le Lion is very similar to this.

If you love very warm spicy fragrances, you might like this very much indeed-- it's very well done, long lasting, very spicy, very amber centric. I don't enjoy this type of fragrance on myself, but I would heartily recommend it to anyone who does.

Beautiful balsamic rose. Slightly smoky and spicy. Rich scent but not overwhelming - very well balanced. Can fell lot of amber and benzoin - warming and comforting. Longevity is good but not great. 5-6 hours. Follow me on IG: scent.guide

Very close to Oud for Greatness but lighter and more wearable. After a few days I am thinking it is actually better than OFG. Very good but prefer Drakon over this one. BTW, the whole line is stunning!

Identical to "Rose Anonyme Extract" by Atelier Cologne launched in 2012... 6 years earlier. An additional cypriol to it. Aside from that slight difference, they're absolutely the same.

Yet another, aoud / rose combo. More floral than aoudy. That is all you guys need to know. hard pass , there is a pissy note in the mix that makes the composition off

Carner's best fragrance for me. Reminds me somewhat of Kemi Hayat without the barnyard oud.
