Memory of Kindness

The notes here (green notes, tomato leaf, soil tincture) are a bit of a puzzle and I'm not convinced they're accurate. I'll support the green notes but that's it. Nearly every FRG review says it smells like a tomato plant/leaf. I'm not sold. This seems to be a case where suggestion and the story (admittedly beautiful) of the fragrance by the creator has exerted an influence over the frag's perception. I've grown tomato plants. I know their leaves. Entirely pleasant in the garden but I don't see a true representation of them translating to a wearable scent. Tomato leaves aren't dissimilar to geranium leaves, they're fuzzy, sun-warmed, vegetal and bitter. I also smell no soil in this, a note I often love and would welcome here. That said, this fragrance is beautiful. And to be very clear, I'm speaking of the absolute. His water perfumes are known for their fleeting performance and I fully recognize there are many defenders of these types of concentrations much like EDC's. But for me, I've no interest in a scent, no matter how lovely, that is gone before I'm out the door. What you will get in the absolute is much more than listed notes. It is a very green bracing cleanliness, full of bright citrus, poss bergamot, poss lemon, a boozy note that plays hide and seek and and a fresh herbal green that's almost basil but not quite. The citrus begins to bloom abt 30 min in, but never sharpens or sours. What he has captured here is less tomato plant and soil but the very smell of the sun itself. A sun that as it pauses over a summer garden lifts the leaves, stems, and skins of vegetation from earth to air. Due to the absolute's concentration, this is not breezy summer citrus green but serious, assertive and sophisticated. So pure, so clean it could and should be the defining scent for that elusive term "unisex". For those with longer memories, five years later Atelier Cologne released their only scent that merited purchase beyond sample size. This was Trefle Pur. It was quickly shuttered from the line as Atelier Cologne embarked on what I'll refer to as its "Jo Malone journey" releasing countless fragrances at a blinding pace. These fragrances arrived cleverly named promising lovely combinations and delivered nothing. There is a reason for this. Both Jo Malone and Atelier Cologne were purchased by Estee Lauder and L'Oreal respectively. Industry giants whose business models for these acquisitions were both very straightforward and remarkably similar. Extract as much money from these "brands" as quickly as possible. This is done by developing scents whose only guiding objective is counter appeal. Make it look, sound and smell remarkable at the counter. To hell with the rest. Inferior ingredients that collapse and betray their artificiality within minutes (Estee Lauder's Tom Ford, I'm looking at you, too). Remember kids, "Big f*cks Small." Why the digression? Trefle Pur was and is a lovely scent and the closest to Memory of Kindness I've encountered. It vanished when L'Oreal bought Atelier Cologne in 2016, but is now listed again on their website and available in some quantity at some of the usual spots for disappearing fragrances at much more reasonable prices than Memory of Kindness. Trefle Pur is a cologne absolue and as silly as that term seems actually does last longer than cologne or EDC's. That said, it is adjacent but not the same as Memory of Kindness. But, fair warning, you will pay ATO for Memory of Kindness absolute. It is superior in every way; more complex, sophisticated, subtle and longer lasting than Trefle Pur. 2hr in Memory of Kindness' sillage has diminshed but its scent remains intact. 4hr in it's strength is further diminished but absolutely as fresh and lovely as when first applied. I'm aware this review contrasts with every review here for this scent. It's also clear all other reviews are for the water perfume, which I have not tried. This should account for the variance in longevity I experienced compared to other reviews, but may also explain how different the scent appeared to me than what others have described. I offer this here, as the scent, for me, was a bit of a wonder and to give representation to the absolute concentration. 8.5/10.

i've been on a CB kick lately, sampling around to find one that might be FB-worthy for me, and memory of kindness keeps swimming to the surface as a consistent favorite. i really really love this scent, but in a quiet, private way. this is a scent i wear for me, because the sillage is so low it's only discernible to others when they're way up in my personal space (just the way i like it). freshly applied, this is a bright prickly joyful burst of vine-ripened tomato. almost perfectly captures the sensation of having been working in a garden, roasting under late summer sun, getting dirt under your nails and grass stains on your knees. you push your way through the tangle of peppery leaves and woody stems on a tomato plant, the pungent oil coating your arms, to find a perfectly ripe and sun-warmed glory of red and orange and gold. it separates easily from its stem and you wipe its thin blanket of dust clean on the front of your shirt. when you bite into it, it's as if you've swallowed the essence of summer, a juicy sun bursting between your teeth, seeds and pulp trickling down your wrist. give it an hour or two, and you can still smell the oily sharp nightshade leaf on your skin, but that signature CB dirt note has risen to the forefront, dry baked dust meets a splash of chill garden hose. the soil note carries throughout, and this is personally my favorite iteration of that note (compared to the slightly too green/aquatic soil in black march, or the smoky-sweet/fungal soil in wild hunt, among others). as this dries down, it does soften into a sort of nondescript woody skin scent, but it doesn't turn overly sweet on me which is a rare blessing. and if i get in real close, i can still catch whiffs of invigorating garden greenness underneath that soft mulchy august-evening breeze. i've sampled both the water perfume and the absolute, and lean towards the absolute because although it's more intense at application and takes longer to dry down, but preserves more of the tomato leaf through the life of the perfume. the water perfume gives me a more rounded and balanced sense of the scent up front, but it also fades much quicker. every time i wear this perfume, it reminds me of the song "memories of green" by vangelis (from the blade runner soundtrack).

My initial impression was that this smelled exactly like a tomato plant and why would I want to walk around smelling like that? But...wait for it...15 minutes later this has morphed into sunshine and smiles and summer and t-shirts and shorts and lazy afternoons. I get it! Memory of Kindness! Yes! Somehow, this has quickly evolved from pure plant and dirt and puttering in the garden into a fragrance that reminds you of that garden but so much more. It's surprisingly wearable and can't wait to wear it in summer on a lazy day, drinking lemonade and just being happy to be alive. Fresh, green, happy!

This scent actually smells like a fresh tomato salad without dressing. Spicy tomato and lettuce. I have the water perfume, and I find it very wearable. Spray it on on a hot dark summer evening sitting in the garden, refreshing! I would characterise this one on top of the "Green Gourmand" group of perfumes. However I don't think it will become a large family.

God I love this! Tomato plants are one of my absolute favourite smells in life, and I love wearing Memory of Kindness, because it does really smell like tomato plants, in all their glory!!! It's divine. Very very scintillating, uplifting and elegant. Delicious!

I've only worn once, and briefly, just to try it out. I was very intrigued by the idea of tomato vine as a note, as well as the general concept of this line of perfumes. This does remind me, as I hoped it would, of my Mamaw and Papaw's backyard garden. The thing I don't like, however, is that moist dirt is the strongest note I get. I wish the tomato vine dominated more. I come from an area with clay-like dirt so maybe that just throws off the association a bit for me. lol. I paired this with Demeter Honeysuckle to enhance the association for me, as honeysuckle grew in proliferation on a fence running alongside my grandparents' garden. It's definitely a nice combo. I'm not sure I'd wear this, even with the honeysuckle layering, anywhere I'm trying to smell good though. ;) But for a sunny day on my own time, maybe laying out poolside, for my own nostalgic enjoyment, yes. I am glad I purchased it (but equally glad to have only purchased a decant sample lol).

A traditional green scent full of clean, naturally spicy tomato leaf, stem, and conifer. Fresh briskness of ripe green plants, but not sweet/fruity. First time I’d describe a scent as linear, since I keep waiting for more elements/complexity. Warms nicely on the skin. Surprisingly decent projection not common with green scents. It’s hard not to like, but wish there were more going on.

I like the freshness of this- leaves, lemon and basil are what I mainly smell plus a little tomato and nice earth. I layered it with a little Lavanila Pure Vanilla and it was a surprisingly nice combo!

Fresh cut tomato leaf and grass. Slightly bitter. Doesn't last more then an hour on me. Very intimate. I don't think I'll buy this one

It's a good fragrance. But, if you want tomato, then get Demeter Tomato. There is no better tomato.

A verdant, coniferous thing with a slight soapy / shampoo angle. There’s a rhubarb / tomato leaf effect at the top to give the scent edge, but it never gets too spiky. The CB standard-fare petrichor is present, and it’s a tad mossy as well. But, for the most part, it’s a bristly aromatic that splits the difference between a bed of ferns and a stalk. As with many scents in the collection, it’s hyperreal but fleeting — this one’s all but dead within 15 minutes, so get a Demeter version instead as Brosius probably made it anyway.

I first smelled this in 2009. As a lover of tomato leaves, I had to smell it. However, this perfume has an aquatic aspect I wasn't expecting. Wet earth it's supposed to be I'm guessing. But the note leans more designer blue aquatic perfume. A great and more realistic tomato leaf would be Loewe Tomato Leaf (room spray), which I spray on myself and my surroundings.

I don't have much to add here. It smells like a tomato plant. Very fresh and vegetal. Captures summer, a garden, or the produce aisle. I hate raw tomatoes, but this one is bearable. Passing my sample on to someone who will appreciate it more.
