1881 Riviera

Minty, green, woody, spicy, not too floral, a little fizzy and almost medicinal/balsamic/tarry/phenolic. A little spiky. Very nice, not too heavy overall. Good for spring, cool summer days and summer nights, and absolutely wearable in the autumn but perhaps a little green, at least up front, to see as much use then as in the spring or the cooler parts of summer. The far end of the drydown is very similar to that of Jo Malone's Wood Sage & Sea Salt. In the JM case, I thought that that must be the ambrette accord. Whatever it is, in that scent or this one, it may not draw a lot of attention but it just does not let up. I like that part a lot. [Edit: I'm pretty sure that here it's patchouli. This is quite the patchouli bomb in the dry-down (and a jasmine bomb first off). Applied directly, this is pretty strong, perfumy and not to my taste. Still, it layers well with Silverlake, for a start.]

Nose Note #1087 I rarely get an idea of buying a full bottle on a first experience - this is one of these rare cases. I have an original sample. What a beautiful masculine elegant tea-centered scent! It's not a performer, it's one of those office friendly scents, but man, what a nice take on the tea note. Watery green jasmine tea, somewhat like Arden Green Tea, but masculine. Or like a less obnoxious version of Nishane Wulong Cha, again - more masculine. It may not exhibit an abundance of complexity, but it is very beautiful. A rare instance of a jasmine forward scent for men. I can't remember any other. It also has a very subtle metallic touch. I'd say if you like Creed Silver Mountain Water - you'll also like this. Performance could be better though. 8.8/10

My first impressions about the fragrance of Cerruti 1881 Riviera is that it resembles the perfume Cerruti 1881 L'essence. As far as I remember in that perfume, notes such as mint-leather were in the foreground. It's a masculine fragrance that I really like. This is also very nice, it seemed to me more successful in terms of permanence and visibility. Riviera gives more floral notes. It can be the effect of jasmine note.

Definitely has points for uniqueness. I think I'm in Love with it, but sometimes I hate it. Strange from up-close, its sillage blooms : floral, salty, woody, indolic and minty. This is one of the most interesting scents I know, one of those you have to try to give you an idea of the actual scent, because no reviews below or even mine perfectly encapsulates how this fragrance really feels like.

Based on a sample. Starts off like TF's Costa Azzurra Acqua then dries to Jo Malone's Wood Sage and Sea Salt. Both are favourites of mine, and the former is hard to find now, and expensive. This is a really good summer fragrance, with decent performance. And at < £50 for 100ml, is a steal. 4/5

An absolutely love!! It's a summer early evening and the rich yachtsman is on holidays with his lady and their friends around the Mediterranean islands.. This is the proper picture to describe this scent! Floral, citrus, woody, romantic!!

The best of the Cerruti range that I’ve had / sampled. Powerful but not overpowering - love at first smell for me tbh. Woody spicy wonderfullness.

As other reviewers pointed out this starts off very bombastic with a blast of lemon peels mixed with something weird (I had a hard time accepting this until I saw in the notes it was incense - only the was I able to appreciate it. Don't know what kind of incense is but it can't be percepted as incense). Next, it goes to the soapy phase - smells like you your grandma washed your clothes with lemon peels scented soap. The soap note is rather strong. I don't like soapiness but I learned to like this. Then it stabilises to orange lemonade, soap, jasmine, some woody base. The drydown is final and it is sexy. (This really smelled like lemon peels to me but now I am reminded by the notes breakdown there is no lemon, so this must be the orange) Unfortunately, on my skin it goes through all stages in a couple of hours, which is a shame because all other reviewers comment on the longevity of this. And I believe this can be true. Probably I got a bad batch bottle. Ignoring this, it's an interesting perfume, hidden gem even for me because I really hate soapy smells. It is a perfume that grows on you with time. PS. Very glad this has nothing to do with the classic 1881 Cerrutti - which I hate because smells like cheap shaving cream.

The Jasmine in here is what really seals the deal on making this a great and safe scent to wear on those spring & summer days. Masculine and not feminine at all which quite rare to find. Been using it as my go to for the office and honestly it does the job well. Definitely a well hidden gem that more people should get their nose on!

As others have said it does have a strange funk in the opening. It's musky and smokey, with sweet-orange citrus, sweet spicy notes and a large dose of amber. Turns aromatic, notes of; mint, woods, patchouli, before turning even spicier with the first wafts of peppered oud. It's heavy with black pepper, remains fresh-spicy and a little powdery. Drydown is a pleasant, inoffensive, oud skin-scent with musk and spices. Performance; moderate projection but the modern oud skin-scent lasts 12hrs +. It's more of a masculine scent and suits someone 28yrs +, and fine most of the year except high summer. Would work night or day. Different to the OG, quite unique all round and so not blind buy safe. Also, the weird funk, possibly from an overdose of amber? is a challenge. If it didn't have that I'd rate this much higher. I don't think it suits the name Riviera, there're not enough pine or white florals and no ocean-breeze aromas whatsoever.

It’s kind of a shame, I really love the late drydown of this but the opening is absolutely horrific on my skin, definitely try on skin before buying, I would probably buy this if it just always smell like the dry down

Too citrusy in the very beginning, too fizzy and bubbling with all these oranges. I expected something more mature and mysterious. After 1/2 hour it becomes more serious and manly.

All I get from this is woods throughout without any development. There’s really not much here to my nose. It seems like a very basic fragrance.

Smells like lemon cologne poured on burnt lime peels with a slight jasmine. One of the worst blind buys of mine. This is not something you want to wear. Maybe better to use as a room odor.

Quintessentially, this is a summer fragrance with a maritime, effervescent, sparkly quality. I would have guessed that the sparkling quality was given by Ambroxide or Ozonic notes, however, looking at the notes I can see that ambroxide is not even listed. The best way to describe Riviera is to compare it to a lemon-ey version of Dior Sauvage (without the depth and the elemi/peppery feel) when you spray it on you can almost taste it, my tongue feels as if I am sucking on a lemon. It's quite masculine and has strong sillage and longevity, most definitely best if used for summer days/nights spent in open spaces (I have to be honest, I have worn it inside and it has given me a headache). I personally really like wearing it to the beach and it smells great after a nice swim (this should give you an idea of its longevity and strenght) - this is not a frangrance that washes off easily. This is the best out of the recent releases by the house of Cerruti and for me it was love at first sniff, be warned though, this is not for the faint at heart because it's strong (super strong) and long lasting and it is ULTRA linear (what you spray on is what you get at the end of the day) its longevity and linearity could actually turn out to be its shortcoming as you may become tired of smelling such strong fragrance all day long Do not even think of wearing this to the office.

1881 Men was one of the very first in my collection, and from that day has pretty much been my No 1, 'If you could keep only one' frag, so I was always going to check out any other 1881's on offer. After a wrong turn with 'Essential' I was keeping my fingers crossed with this one, and 'Silver', which I picked up at the same time. Riviera is great! The leather and Jasmine really shine, but I can easily pick out the other notes above. Very masculine and brilliantly priced. Sillage is polite and longevity is strong but not overbearing. In fact everything about this one is moderate, which is very welcome right now as I'm becoming increasingly offended by the heavy wafts of Ambroxan coming at me uninvited from all angles. Very well done Cerruti. What an injustice that lesser fragrances occupy space at the top table whilst Riviera sits hidden away inside UK High Street chemist discount stores. If you like the look of this one, for the price it's at you'd be mad not to grab it. I'll be buying back ups.

The masculine version of Prada Tendre. Bergamot, orange, vetiver, jasmine, patchouli and gentle woods. Both are extremely well crafted. 1881 is significantly heavier and thicker; Prada is more sparkling and breathy. The dry-down is near exactly the same though.
