Pour Monsieur

Chanel Pour Monsieur WAS (edit 2014, before it was watered down) my signature scent and it will stay with me till the day I die. This is no matter how old I get and how many other wonderful fragrances I shall have the fortune to meet. Pour Monsieur is the scent that blew the veil from my eye. It showed me that fragrance was a universe that went way beyond "smelling nice". It showed me that perfume could be fine art, to be enjoyed side by side with music, painting and other established art forms. I caught my first sniff of PM when visiting an old friend of mine, who had been an enthusiast for several decades. I was not very impressed then, just thought that it smelled a little dated and stuffy. The next year I went with my family on big city vacation. We visited a perfume store and I decided to try PM on my wrist for the afternoon. Just for the fun of it. Half an hour later we sat in a café, and that's when the miracles started. I sensed a wonderful smell coming up from my wrist. But it was not the lemon blast that I remembered from the shop. It was a deep, warm, mossy sensation that could be an enchanted forest. Ten minutes later it had transformed into something else and even more wonderful. This went on and on, better and better. I literally felt that the fragrance was alive and insisted that I should take it seriously and embrace it. And I sure did. Before returning to the hotel I had been back in the shop to buy a bottle and I have never looked back since. This should only be at my bank account, which since that day has suffered deeply from my new-found passion for fragrances. Like some other reviewer I sincerely believe that this fragrance can actually make you a better human being, or at least a nicer person. It makes you calm and self-confident, and it has a miraculous ability to relieve stress. Spray all car interiors with PM, and road rage will be wiped off the face of the Earth. A timeless masterpiece. EDIT Nov 2014: Pour Monsieur seems to have been watered down. Just opened a new bottle and the movie 'Gone in 60 Minutes' (or was it seconds) instantly comes to mind. The oakmoss, the depth, the power, the longevity, the magic...oh where have you gone? After the citrus opening - which is also hugely weakened - PM extremely quickly fades into a skin scent, and even when generously applied, it's almost completely gone after an hour. I used to enjoy three spritzes all day (from a 2009 bottle, not talking vintage here). A shadow of its former self - another great classic has been emasculated and left its manhood on eBay. Thanks for the memories. RIP.

(Review of the EdT c. 1980s) Some years ago the first experience I had of Pour Monsieur was the EdP reworking by Jacques Polge. It wasn't love at first sniff. It took a fair amount of time for me to "figure it out" and understand what it was doing. Its "all things to all men" character initially read to my nose as a bit vacillating, but after quite a bit more time and patience its many puzzle pieces fell into place and I started to see the big picture. It sent me on a determined path to find an old formulation of the EdT. There are quite a few differences, though nothing terribly stark (the vanilla "mistake" makes a contrary argument, however), between this old EdT and the new EdP, but I won't expound upon them here (read my review of the EdP if you're curious). Though it is the briefest part of Pour Monsieur, the lemon opening is the best part. It's not bergamot; no zesty, oily bitterness here - that would be too loud, a bit too forward, for a 1950s man's-man fragrance that must be about simplicity and cleanliness. Just a big squirt of lemon juice made a bit smoother and a bit less acidic by a gentle addition of powdery aldehydes. If this doesn't put a smile on your face and a kick in your step, see a doctor. The cool brown spice heart is beautifully done. Cardamom mostly, with very tiny and muted touches of stuff like coriander, cinnamon, and anise. A quick sniff could fool someone into thinking there is a floral aspect in here, but closer study reveals that to not be the case. The spices are so soft, quiet, and multi-dimensional you can pull slight floral aspects from them since there isn't much of a piquant/spicy din getting in the way. Then, of course, the cloud of oakmoss - the real deal, the good ol' stuff, in one big pile. Damp, woody, green leaves, fresh-out-of-the-morning-shower earthiness supported by a bed of very quiet, gentle, aromatic cedar and woody vetiver. This heart and base transition is refreshingly bitter compared to the lemon opening's refreshing and bright sourness. At all points Pour Monsieur is bath powder smooth, clean, and seamlessly woven together like the lightest and plushest of cashmere sweaters. Elegance, class, understatement, and simplicity perfectly bottled. It's a legend for a reason, boys. One of the best "for men" perfumes ever created. A benchmark. There is not a single thing I would change in it, and I dearly love it.

i found a genuine bottle in a tabac shop for a great price. i think it is from the mid or late 90's, because it has the barcode, the words "eau de toilette" are below "chanel" but the list of ingredients is very short, only three listed. regarding the scent, chanel pour monsieur is very well known, a super-nice blend, one of the best chypre ever. so i dont want to talk about notes. regarding the difference between this semi-vintage version and the current formula, i think the vintage is deeper, the oakmoss is more prominent and i can feel the link with the concentree version. the performance is not very good. the current version seems to be brighter, on my skin the performance is slightely better. however, both are perfectly made but have a bad performance. due to the bad longevity-sillage, i think this fragrance is not worthy at full price. i prefer the concentree version, which is deeper, more complex with a better performance. in the battle of the classic chypre for gentlemen, chanel pour monsieur can fight with every rival but can lose with someone. the vintage givenchy pour monsieur is on the same quality level but the performance is a bit better. same for eau sauvage and armani eau pour homme. versace l'homme is more rough but the performance is better. i have to be honest, in this group there are no beast mode fragrances. so the smell is the real deal, and chanel pour monsieur is a great choice. ho trovato un'autentica bottiglia di chanel pour monsieur in una tabaccheria ad un ottimo prezzo. credo risalga alla metà degli anni 90. è un pò più denso rispetto alla versione attuale, senti un vero muschio di quercia che lo collega in modo diretto alla versione concentree che adoro. la performance è pessima come la versione attuale, che comunque ha un odore magnifico. secondo me a prezzo pieno non so se ne vale la pena, ci sono molte alternative con qualità identiche o quasi ma con una performance leggermente migliore(la vecchia versione di givenchy pour monsieur ad esempio). comunque chanel è chanel, quindi non avrete mai in mano qualcosa di scadente. ottimo prodotto sicuramente! scent-8,5 longevity-6 sillage-5,5 versatility-8 uniqueness-8 bottle design-6,5 compliment factor-6,5 back up bottle?no my vote-8 in one word- classic alternative- givenchy pour monsieur vintage version.

Pour Monsieur (1955) by Henri Robert for Chanel (CPM) is a timeless masterpiece and probably the closest in form and execution to Coty’s quintessential Chypre (1917) that originated the chypre genre. I have worn CPM for nearly 40 years and regardless of the other great fragrances I have tried it remains my go-to scent. The fresh-chypre accord, enhanced by the wonderful array of supporting notes, spans the olfactory spectrum like no other masculine fragrance. If the oakmoss quotient has been modified by regulatory changes then it hasn’t detracted from the quality of the fragrance. A subtle scent designed to be discovered rather than announced, this charming fragrance conveys the kind of quiet confidence valued in any close encounter. A common complaint about CPM is that it lacks projection and longevity, however this is to miss the point. Chanel was inspired by elegant and aristocratic men like Boy Capel, the Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich and the Duke of Westminster, as detailed in biographies such as Justine Picardie’s excellent Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life (2010, rev. 2017). Chanel wanted her first masculine fragrance to evoke those qualities she appreciated in the men she most admired: rich, but not gaudy; impressive, but not showy; smart, yet subtle; refined, but understated. It should be no surprise then that CPM’s first incarnation was as an EDT with the emphasis placed on discretion rather than flamboyance. Regarding longevity, it does seem unreasonable to expect this fragrance (and for that matter any fragrance) to last ‘12+’ hours when perfumes are designed to evaporate over time in order to release their various notes and accords. Any fragrance that does last so long must of necessity be pungent in its composition and therefore not subtle or discrete. In an intimate context you don’t need a nuclear-tipped fragrance that could be detected across the street and would stifle the person with whom you may wish to engage. Chanel understood these details and the meaning of elegance which is to make good choices, not least in terms of a scent that gently invites rather than brashly demands attention.

Hello fragrance fam. For today's reformulation guide were covering the benchmark Eau De Cologne style fragrance by Chanel known as Pour Monsieur EDT! This fragrance is known for its lemon and citric top notes with an oak moss filled, chypre dry down. This fragrance was first released in 1955, and surprisingly through time Chanel has been able to keep it fairly true to it's original scent profile. Before I list PM's main three reformulations here's an approximate listing of PM's previous iterations. Each version may have slight batch variations. * USA, visit our web store VintageDecants If you would like to sample this fragrance in it's vintage formulation, along with hundreds of other discontinued and rare fragrances to choose from. Pre-1960: Released as "Eau De Cologne Pour Monsieur". 1961-1969: Name changes to "A Gentleman's cologne". 1969-1975: Name changes to "Chanel for Men" 1975-1979: Name changes to "Eau Pour Monsieur". 1979-89: Name changes to "Pour Monsieur" as an EDC 1989-2016: Name stays the same but changes to an EDT. Slightly different scent profile. Post-2016: Changes to an EDP. Very altered scent profile. *It's important to note Chanel markets regionally and this timeline may not match exactly world wide. Some bottle styles may have overlapping timelines with one another. I would consider Pour Monsieur to have three main reformulations. Pre-2008 - Bottles with yellow or amber colored liquid will generally be closer to the fragrances original scent profile. The older the bottle (The EDC's) the higher a concentration of musks and oakmoss you will receive. 2008-2016 - After a reformulation removed the allergins from the ingredients, Chanel opted to turn Pour Monsieurs liquid to a green color. The longevity greatly diminished, and its natural aroma became more synthetic around this time. Post 2016: The EDT was turned into an EDP with a new scent profile. The lemon notes were reduced, and a higher note of vanilla was added. This version smells closer to the discontinued 1989 flanker of Pour Monsieur that was titled "Pour Monsieur EDP Concentree". I have had a bottle of Chanel PM on and off pretty much my whole life. The first bottle of this I got when my Dad let me have a bottle of his that had a quarter of the juice left when I was in high school. Saved it for special occasions. As far as I am concerned Henri Robert made the perfect Gentleman's fragrance in 1955. Just takes Men time to grow up enough to wear it and appreciate it. Even after all these years, this is still my fail safe fragrance for special occasions. Never fails to garner compliments. It's mature, discreet, but still radiates wonderfully in your personal space, all the things a classy fragrance should be. Classic combination of oakmoss ( oakmoss substitutes?), vetiver, citrus notes from the neroli, floral notes from the peony, hints of spice from the basil and coriander, hard to pick out individual notes but the blend as a whole is just magnificent. I picked up an EDP of the current version and obviously it's not exactly the same as the vintage but it is still recognizably the same fragrance. Just a lot thinner, maybe the concentration of oakmoss is less or has been removed altogether, my nose is not good enough to tell. Does still last about 6-7 hours with 5 sprays but I remember just needing a couple of sprays with the old juice to last the whole day. Now comes the key question, Is it still worth paying Chanel retail prices for PM in it's current avatar? For me personally, hell yes. I have too many memories attached to this so I will always have a bottle of it. For somebody looking to try it for the first time, if you are looking for a quiet, refined, classy frag that adds to your personality in formal clothes, go for it, none better. If you have notions of Old Man/dated or are looking to make a flashy statement, this is not for you. Get this if you want to be Don Draper in a suit and hat. If you want to be P Diddy at the club, there are other frags that do that. 10/10

EDT version Pour Monsieur is 64 years old (in 2019) and we need to think about it. Not so much to pave the way to the occasional reviewer that says Pour Monsieur is dated or, even worse, that it feels just a little old-fashioned... in my opinion to think about its years is to celebrate how after thousands of fragrances playing on citrus, chypre accords, fougere accords, Pour Monsieur remains so astoundingly erudite. A classic needs to be judged over a period of time, to withstand this test it needs to be of the highest quality and paramount of its kind. Meaning, a classic needs to define its kind in a way, but also to transcend it so not to be eroded by the madding sprays time will spit out. This is why “classics” are also a subject at university, one involving the study of ancient Greek and Latin literature, philosophy, and history. I cannot think of many (some I can!) aromatic and citrusy male-dedicated fragrances that could be described as timeless classics, and so obviously remain bigger than the aromatic and citrusy things that came out throughout long 64 years? It is not yet time to retire Mr. Pour Monsieur... keep on bringing that neroli, verbena, cardamom, coriander and your masterful bigger-than-life oak moss. (if you don’t know what I am talking about, you haven’t tried a vintage bottle yet...) In a time of rebirth of ateliers cologne (common guys sarcasm was just there to be picked!), with all their fresh colours and exotic names, with all their tailored packaging choices and tricks, with all the positive energy they can conjure and so please do and so be it... we can ask ourselves if ever lemons and green leaves are able to speak of being a proud and meaningful man as this Chanel does?

The perfect cross between New York and Eau Sauvage, and perhaps better than both of them! There may even be a little Diaghilev showing itself with this structure, in the sense that Diaghilev is, in part, a dry, spicy Chypre. Diaghilev, of course, is a whole other animal! Haha! Pour Monsieur remains a Chypre, and doesn’t stray into the oriental category as the first one I mentioned, something I’m grateful for. It’s really as close to perfection in a masculine Chypre fragrance as one could get. Very captivating, fresh, classy, smooth. Citrus(lemon), herbal, and mossy cedar and vetiver. The lemon is very prominent and beautiful in the opening. It perfectly prepares you for the rest of the fragrance. Pour Monsieur is light, but I think lighter is better. It’s so common these days to clear a room over-spraying the heavy fragrances available. I’m guilty of it, too. I want to learn to let fragrances be a subtle thing that passerby’s may catch a whiff of that create a lasting memory and a desire to lean in a little closer. This is the newest bottle available. It immediately became a favorite, and the first thought was that this is what I’ve been searching for all these years. A full 10 hours later, it lingers still with its beautiful mossy, vetiver, cedar base, even with a little herbal thrown in. If you have a spare bottle and are interested in some of the fragrances in my collection, I’ll let you know what I’d be willing to trade. I’ll trade you twice the value of a bottle of Pour Monsieur. If you are a fan of any of the fragrances I mentioned in the beginning, go ahead and pull the trigger on this one. You won’t be disappointed. A most definite timeless quality about this one.

Luca Turin (who should know) calls this the absolute gold standard for a men's chypre, and I agree. It's amazing how straightforward and yet complex this fragrance is (as is true with the best of chypres): it opens with the best blast of lemon ever, and then has spices underneath until it settles down to a comforting mossy finish. It smells as dashing as all get-out, as you might expect for the first true men's fragrance released by the House of Chanel. This is the sort of thing I could imagine the character of Roger Sterling on "Mad Men" wearing to a big clients' meeting to project confidence and sophistication. There seems to be a lot of confusion about this fragrance, though. It's not really a fougere (the classic barbershop fragrance, which usually has geranium and lavender to suggest the smells of ferns--even though ferns have no actual scent); nor, despite its color (because of the oakmoss), is it a classic aromatic green. And it actually predates by eleven years Dior's famous Eau Sauvage, which also opens with a big lemon blast (albeit a much more acrid one). I love this, despite its costliness and its only moderate longevity. It does seem like Chanel should be able, for this price, to make something last as long as this supposedly once did. But it smells so Continental and classy, and if any men's fragrance ever seemed timeless, it's this one.

The beginning is sharp and deliberate — citrus and petitgrain cutting through the air like morning light through old glass. There’s nothing loud, nothing eager to impress. It feels architectural, almost structural, as if built by hand from clean lines and careful thought. The lemon is restrained, dry rather than juicy, and soon the spices begin to rise — cardamom, coriander, a whisper of ginger — like warmth beneath linen. Then it settles. The middle becomes quiet, a measured rhythm of woods and moss. There’s something deeply human in it — pressed shirts, well-worn books, soft conversation in paneled rooms. The base of oakmoss and vetiver carries a muted confidence, more shadow than presence. It recalls old architecture in stone and cedar: proportioned, elegant, perfectly balanced. It does not smell modern, and that is its strength. Where today’s scents shimmer with synthetic polish, this remains grounded — refined woods and natural moss giving form to something calm and exact. It won’t be found in Sephora’s aisles; it belongs to another vocabulary entirely, one of clarity, civility, and discretion. In the end, it feels timeless — intelligent, composed, and quietly alive, a good, old-fashioned scent built on discipline rather than decoration. It reminds me most of Dior Eau Savage EDT and Guerlain Vetiver.

Chanel Pour Monsieur... I own the current formulation. This is a simple fragrance with no frills so I'm going to keep this review simple and to the point in the spirit of this amazing masterpiece of a fragrance. Beautiful realistic lemon, lemon verbena up top. Spices join in the mix, smooth, woody, mossy dry down. Very simplistic fragrance: Curtis, spice, woodsy moss perfectly balanced even in it's current formulation. Scent: 10/10 Immediately my wife complimented me the first time I wore this. She compliments me on my fragrance like 3-5 times a year max so that's saying something Sillage: 9/10 I honestly love the amount of sillage/projection this gives off and would not change it. It's relatively strong and pushes out well for the first 3-4 hours, and then it quiets down but is still there when you move around for the 8-9 hour duration. I find 2-3 sprays is PLENTY especially with the amount of juice that comes out per spray. Longevity: 10/10 I don't see why everyone is crying about the performance of this fragrance...? I get minimum 8-9 hours 7 at the VERY least. Very satisfying projection for 3-4 hours with 2-3 sprays to the chest under clothes. Versatility: 9/10 I would wear this anywhere. Work, weekend play, running errands... But it's not designed for summer heat. IMO Best $95 I spent all year.

What else is there to say, this is a timeless, elegant presentation of citrus, supported and embellished with classic notes of oakmoss and vetiver. The current version is excellent and its citrus component is paired with a robust and creamy cardamom note that lends the perfect spicy, masculine warmth to the composition. A great scent for work and formal or semi-formal events, whose character should stand out among the many faceless, sweet chemical blobs comprising modern men's releases. Thumbs up, and an easy 9/10. Side note: In relation to the current version of the Pour Monsieur Eau de Parfum, I actually find this one to be the creamier, spicier, more complex of the two, while the current Eau de Parfum focuses a lot on a rich, sharp citrus note which drives its heart. Therefore, this current version of Pour Monsieur actually reminds me more of Pour Monsieur Concentree than the EDP. If anyone remembers, Concentree was first, and then they released the EDP, which was sort of put out to replace Concentree. I find them vastly different, so if anyone misses the old Concentree now that it's no longer in production, take a look at the current version of Pour Monsieur (the EDT), it's quite similar as far as the blend of citrus and cardamom are concerned, though ultimately brighter and crisper.

Chanel Pour Monsieur is one of the best classic eau de cologne type perfumes together with Dior Eau Sauvage. Start with a beautiful refreshing lemon note. It’s quite different from most of the other eau de cologne type perfumes, there is something so comforting accord behind the citrus, should be the combination of cardamom, ginger and oak moss. There is a subtle white floral accord (neroli & petitgrain) when you smell in the air, masterful blend. Smell so good, I can bathe in it.. Is this outdated? Not to my nose, but smell mature. I doubt if younger crowd will appreciate this. Can you believe this was released in 1955? How amazing it’s still around, and kudos to Chanel for keeping this in production. I’m sure it is not the exact same thing compared to the vintage juice and probably gone through lot of changes over the cause of time. But still a gorgeous perfume. I only have a small decant of this beauty, and have a full bottle of Pour Monsieur Concentree, I prefer the former. Concentree goes towards too powdery and vanillic in the dry down. So is Chanel Pour Monsieur a perfect fragrance? Unfortunately no, because the performance is quite bad. It doesn’t last more than 4 hours on my skin, after 1st hour it’s a skin scent. It’s shame, because such a wonderful perfume.

This is an absolute love for me. I sprayed some on my wrist at the Nassau airport...i took a big whiff of that brisk lemon and grabbed the bottle and headed for the cashier. This is my daily from late March to late September. I love how brisk and dry this is....and there is this dirty vetiver in the base that just draws you in. It is a peculiar fragrance in that it does not project well at all but lingers around close to the skin for 8 hours. It has this strange quality of changing the way you smell without filling a room. I’ve never experienced anything like this. It’s both strong close up but mild from a distance. Update: I recently bought a bottle of xerjoff’s Renaissance and it’s making a strong run for my favorite scent. If you are a fan of this profile do yourself a favor and get a sample of Renaissance....so smooth and deep. There are some big differences between the two: the Chanel is much smoker and rough in the drydown and doesn’t last near as long. But it’s magical fragrance. I would say Renaissance is mothership of this style; long lasting, insane brightness of citrus and some how capable of holding up year round. But....the Chanel is a little more interesting.

Chanel Pour Monsieur Eau de Toilette is amazing. Considering this came out in 1955, it's amazing that it set the benchmark for all mens releases to come for the next almost 70 years, and is still wearable today. Surely it changed a little with time and regulations, but it's a testament to Chanel that they kept this fragrance around for so long. Honestly if they brought back the whole body care line for this fragrance I would buy it all up. You can still find it for sale on Chanel's website, but not in the US. If you're desperate there are some sites that will ship from the UK with a hefty dose of shipping charges. What makes it such a good fragrance? The opening is a blast of lemon and verbena that is still unique and unmatched to this day. The middle is mild aromatic spices, all on a bed of oakmoss, vetiver and cedar wood. I swear there is a raspy labdanum note in the base, making it more musky, but it is not listed. Many people will harp on this fragrance and say it is weak. It is exactly as loud as it should be. It gives you an aura of freshness, seriousness, and masculinity that is unmatched by any fragrance today. Not everything has to shout. Listen carefully...

This is pure class in a bottle. The scent is a 10 and a spring/summer staple in my collection. However, I have noticed the longevity and projection of several Chanel fragrances I own are somewhat disappointing. Anateus, Egoiste, and Pour Monsieur are wonderful smelling fragrances and ideal for the mature gentlemen. However, they all project very little and disappear much too quickly for a $100-ish fragrance. Blu Chanel EDP is the only Chanel I have that has strong projection and impressive longevity. I'm convinced Chanel has toned town most or all of their classic fragrances so they won't offend others. The 70's and 80's and in many cases the 90's was an era of some real beastmode fragrances from Chanel. Looking at the green color of the juice you would expect a traditional green-based scent. However, it's more of a woody (oakmoss) and vetiver vibe. The green is there, but in a different composition that what you would probably expect. Despite Pour Monsieur being a weak performer, the scent is so gorgeous and unique from anything else in my collection, I'll keep it in my rotation to wear a few times a year in the Spring and Summer.

Exceptional scent, but the current version does not have much longevity. After two hours I had a lot of trouble picking it up at all, even as just a skin scent. At first I was thinking I was just going nose-blind to it, but a coworker also had difficulty detecting it. This is the dressed up, clean-shaven version of Eau Sauvage - more refined, more powdery, less musky, but with a really appealing natural citrus blast to open up and quality wood notes to back it up. It is ephemeral and if you want it to last for more than a couple of hours be prepared to re-apply - exceptional date scent, apply reasonably close to first meeting your intended and get ready to impress them, but it will retreat very quickly after that. My suspicion is that they've done what so many others have, watered down the legacy EDT and marketed the old strength of the standard scent as the new concentree/EDP. I really hope this is remedied - despite my enthusiasm for the scent itself, it's a real bummer to have paid this much for what amounts to an EDC, or Eau Fraiche for people whose skin is more prone to consuming fragrance..

Why does mankind insist on altering, or rather tainting, perfection: the single most elusive quality in this world? Why not simply appreciate it in those all too rare moments of realization? The perfumer who sought to modernize Pour Monsieur in 1989 was undoubtedly adept in their own right, but one must bare in mind that Rembrandt never sought to alter Michelangelo's David. This is the quintessential scent of the 1950s. A bit austere, but clean and amiable in its presentation. It's like a very stern father in a clean, tan worstered wool suit who suddenly smiles warmly, hugs you, and tells you how proud he is to have you as his child. The verbena is bright, sweet, and brisk. It brings to mind clean linen handkerchiefs in an old-fashioned department store. The oakmoss and vetiver hold it all together like the platinum prongs on a diamond ring. A very French, very CLASSIC Chanel. Sillage is soft after the first 30 minutes. Longevity is moderate. About 5-6 hours per application. It is fleeting, but a whiff of paradise is better than none at all.

Review for EDT, I love this perfume I stand by Coco Chanel to when she said " this is the no. 5 version for men. I'm only 22 at the time of writing this, yes it smells a little old fashion but this is what makes me appreciate this perfume so much! Smelling this perfume it reminds me of seeing man that is well dress and formal, his words charming and under sweeps you from your feet. When he hugs you with tightness you enter this warm beautiful alliance. It's a classic that will stand against the time in future but yet gives you a sense of nostalgia to how this perfume has become! The only down side with todays modern world and with the vast growing trend of cutting down cost, swapping for alternatives and reformulating is this perfume when I wear it personally does not perform in longevity nor in radius. It's so sad for me to say that because I adore this perfume so greatly. Let's just hope in future that the house of Chanel will make it great in longevity again!

1955 Pour Monsieur in France for men cologne in us a gentlemen's cologne in uk after 1988 Became under one name " Pour Monsieur " chanel reformulated this perfume in 1988 so if you search a vintage one be sure please it's before 1988 . the mid missing one note " Peony pink Flower " I llllllllllloved the vintage so much . this perfume is all about the Base . oak moss is the star . but wait it's not alone . tree notes in the base they are mixed together , you don't smell this alone to this . the mid notes : you do get the spicy coriander and ginger but the star is Peony flower . top note : done with an Italian style Neroli petitgrain lemon . but again it's all about the Base + the Peony flower + fresh green and spicy notes . what a simple perfume what a beauty . after 1988 chanel reduced the base " I mean a lot " . Current one : still good i'm surprised . peace .

Chanel Pour Monsieur is a 100% classic, very serious masculine fragrance, really classy, sophisticated and well blended. I have a vintage feeling with it, something retro but it is at the same time a timeless classic. It also has spicy, floral, green, something sweet (very weak) notes. It opens with a burst of citrus-lemon which it calms down after some time. The top notes I get are oakmoss, vetiver, sicilian Peony, neroli. The other notes are weaker but I do not get any cedar. As time passes, it becomes warmer and deeper but you never lose the track of the citrus notes although they are not the main key. I reccomend it for autumn, spring and cool summer days. This is not for very hot weather clearly. Too strong. The longevity is moderate and the sillage is heavy on my skin. Clearly a masterpiece, worth to buy.

If you like Sicilian lemon, petitgrain, neroli, cardamom, ginger, coriander, basil, oakmoss, vetiver & cedar you'll like this. Quite fabulous...restrained, composed, elegant, discreet, understated, French. Typically Chanel. Probably one of the best men's fragrances ever made. Created by Henri Robert who was Chief Perfumer at Chanel from 1953 to 1978 and is responsible for, among others, Number Nineteen & Cristalle. This was one of the very first "grown up" colognes I bought for myself as a sixteen-year-old way back in 1981. I bought a bottle of this & a bottle of Nina Ricci "Signoricci 2" duty-free on my way home to England from Amsterdam, and I've been wearing it on and off ever since. If you wear nothing else, wear Pour Monsieur.

Opening is big blast of citrus, closer to Dior Homme Sport than Pour Monsieur EDP (in the EDP, the citrus is smoother and not as sharp as this). The opening is certainly refreshing especially for a warmer day. This stage is short (the lemon stays around a good hour longer in the EDP, to my nose anyways). I started to notice some soapy aspects along with some slight spicy hints. Comes across as clean and fresh. This stage is also short and it quickly gets to the dry down. It’s mostly an oakmoss affair from here along with some vetiver, coming across as slightly bitter, earthy, and at times slightly pungent. Somewhat reminded me of Chanel Antaeus at this stage. Overall, I prefer the EDP over this. Longevity: 2-3 hours

Despite it being said that this beauty has been simplified to the core and therefore has lost its soul to fit the ever growing mass market since it was launched back in 1955, it still has this beautiful barbershop/gentleman vibe blended with fresh lemon and if you want to turn it up a notch add the complimentary after-shave lotion (Splash) and you are good to go. We shouldn't even be mentioning projection. This type of fragrance is better off living its discrete life. Beautiful classic gentlemen's scent. Love it. It is a Brilliant fragrance, Fresh, Citrusy, UPLIFTING and A Timeless Classic. Chanel Pour Monsieur EDT is one of the best men's perfumes that created , very masculine and a bit mature. If you like Eau Sauvage and Armani Eau Pour Homme EDT, you will like this one. It opens up with like a bit sharp fresh citrusy , spicy and green notes in the background then dry down is mossy woody. This review is based on the new reformulation and perfect for the spring and summer. I'm so happy that I have it in my collection and I love it. Longevity is average. Two Thumbs Up. Bravo Chanel ! Just found a 60ml bottle of the old Chanel PM labelled 'cologne', about half-full. Despite some evidence of note deterioration (a problem with vintages that really doesn't get acknowledged enough) this has moments of absolutely stunning beauty, notably in the verbena note, which is one of the loveliest notes I've ever smelled in a perfume full stop. Longevity is good; drydown a little unearthly. I will have to hunt up the current formulation (I am located in Canada, where the EDT is readily available) for comparison's sake, and hope the juxtaposition does not produce too much disappointment.

I sampled this beauty a way back and had been wanting to get my hands on it for a few years (it's not available in my country). Finally found it at the duty free and was super happy to get my hands on a 100ml. Hands down the biggest disappointment of my six-year-and-counting fragrance journey. Seven sprays on moisturized neck, chest and shoulders - gone in literally forty-five minutes. The current formulation is the most abysmally weak and underperforming designer scent I've ever come into contact with. Chanel does not deserve your money for this. Steer well clear.

Chanel Pour Monsieur (1955) - oakmoss cologne - I give you #henrirobert ‘s masterpiece and one of the world’s greatest masculines. Gosh, I wish I could wear this perfume more, as everytime I spray it on, im floored. This is basically a rich Oakmoss and grassy Vetiver base mixed with cologne-like accords. The nuanced part is adding spice notes of Ginger, Cardamom and Coriander that is now referenced by countless other fragrances and helped shaped Masculines as we now smell it to be. Yet, the technical prowess makes it elegant and well-balanced. A bespoke suit.

This is one of the best Chypre/Barbershop fragrance that you can get! I really appreciate this fragrance for what it is. A classy and an Elegant fragrance with mediocre projection but with solid longevity. To really understand this fragrance you have to go back in time, and to understand how a wealthy gentleman smell like. Then probably you understand why this fragrance doesn't have to ''scream'' and also not all occasions requires a fragrance to be loud. If you have this in mind, then for sure you will enjoy this divine fragrance for what it really is.

wow this perfume took me by surprise today! i was ignoring this one as it felt a bit bland, not to mention the performance was a bit on the weaker side. but today, as it felt like a chanel day today, i put this on and boom! the peony and oakmoss, create this powdery vibe that is so classy, and to my surprise it lasted for a good 8 hours! i guess ive let the bottle aired a bit hence the improvement in the performance. for those who are looking for a classy scent that is not overpowering, this is the one! it never wears you. a true signature scent. 10/10

I prefer this one slightly more than Eau Sauvage. I really appreciate both fragrances--Eau Sauvage has this beautiful, bright lemon top, masterfully done and it perhaps smells more natural than Pour Monsieur. Monsieur opens with the same hefty dose of bergamot (less lemon it feels like, and more ginger, with some powderiness). They both run around the same price wholesale, with Sauvage being discounted, however. Gentleman's fragrance--if your gf is under 40, she might think you smell like daddy though :). I'd repurchase a bottle at full retail.

I purchased a bottle last year, it’s almost gone. It’s almost to special to wear everyday but I still went through it quicker than I expected. A few sprays on my neck and chest and I can smell it for hours despite any olfactory adaptation. I felt as though the older the bottle got the stronger it became. What pour monsieur invokes in emotion is what I appreciate the most. It’s perfect blend and balance of ingredients created a legitimate potion to induce calm, warmth and nostalgia. Re formulation or not the magic is still very much there.

Now this is a chypre, period. God's shaving cream smell, refined barbershop all the way. This is a model aroma, an idea of a fragrance in the philosophical way, because it is a reference point of what chypre barbershop fragrances must or should smell - from here on, other houses designed their own take on this model. It is that perfect. Only drawback - a nowadays common to all old gems still manufactured - is performance (way below average - projects 45mins - maybe a full 1h with over-spray, lasts 2hs as skin scent being very generous).

My father wore this some 25 years ago. I re-discovered it last year and that was the perfect moment. I'm reaching 40, I have a quieter lifestyle, I have a more classic wardrobe. This is for sure an old school perfume but it has aged gracefully. It' s a timeless beauty. It mainly a citrus but with a lot of elegance. Performance is not great on the skin. I need a lot of sprays. The best thing is when I spray it on a scarf during the spring and summer. When I put my scarf back on after a hard day of work I can smell it and it's... Wow!

The ultimate powder and aldehyde for men ! The citrus on top is also one of the gentlest I had the pleasure to experience.. It's so smooth and old-school classy it almost makes you want to move like Fred Astaire.. I wear it for special occasions only, it's not a jeans and t-shirt scent although it can work if you want to add some dandyism and irony to your casual days ! Whatever ! Young or mature, you must add it to your collection.. the time for wearing Pour Monsieur will come sooner than what you think !

A man of class walks into Claridge's on a spring day, takes off his driving gloves and looks around the tea room...aaaand CUT...its a wrap. A perfect shot of a perfect looking actor ending a perfectly executed film. For me, this fragrance is an epitome of a perfect (that word again) gentleman...shame it has no longevity, but where it lacks in persistence it surely gives in manliness and it does so in abundance. A classic that doesn't feel old at any time oozing a manly (almost) perfection!

Initial spray was a bit disappointing ..smelled like a lot of other summer scents I own.. citrusy, light, fresh but kinda weak I thought. but the dry drown is a completely different story.. as time goes by the scent becomes stronger, deeper, richer, and surprisingly masculine. When I put my nose on the skin, it still smells like a typical light citrus summer fragrance, but from an arm length, I get this very heavy classic and very masculine cloud. It's very unique and sexy.

This is one of my absolute favourite fragrances. Even though I have tried and collected many over the years, I'd put it in my top 3 "traditional masculines". There's something about it that's so right, as if all the components are perfectly balanced, between woody, resinous, herbal, and citrus facets. It just takes a couple of sprays and it lasts all day. It's very gentle, so unless it's over-sprayed nobody else will notice unless they're within hugging distance.

The first perfume I ever bought ( I was 14) and, in my humble opinion, still one of the best classic men's fragrances ever created...it's fresh, classy, understated and the epitome of sophistication. Wearing Chanel pour Monsieur will make you smile, ad a light spring to your gait and make life seem so much easier......it's that good!! Edit: good grief, how flimsy it has become.......another IFRA-corpse.......

It could be the year 3000 and Pour Monsieur will still be relevant. An eternal classic just as described above. PM is IMO a citrus/aromatic/spicy fragrance, it’s elegant and refined, just as Chanel women’s suits, but in this case for men. Works for every occasion and season, projects class and good taste, which is far away from today’s ambroxan and crowd pleaser perfume market. A very gorgeous fragrance.

11th May 2020; living in Switzerland today is the first day country opens up partly following covid19 lockdown. Sprayed Pour Monsieur EDT in overdose to work both on myself and against virus 😉 This is not a review, this is a burst of optimistic energy one harnesses under the spell of such tenderness, value, erudition. Had to share it, hoping it will bring good to somebody who reads.

---On my skin--- Starts off very similiar to Eau sauvage, but after 2 min that changes, that Sicilian Peony take over for a long dominating time,but you can get a hint of oakmoss and cedar now and then. The Basil, Cardamom and coriander note are very weak. It's Majestic. Every gentleman should have this in their wardrobe I now understand, the high price for a Chanel rating 10/10

Genuinely obsessed with this fragrance, but sadly the longevity issue just doesn't make it worth it. An old school citrus creamy blend, but done so uniquely. Can't find a dupe like it, since Chanel's blending quality is top notch, but can't justify the price. A modern similarity I guess is probably something like Dior homme Cologne, which also has its longevity issues.

I’ve accumulated some bottles through the years, mostly splashes, of different eras and concentrations. About the current edt, there’s a lot of verbena, a very present d-limonene, almost no evernyl, some vanilin, a hint of cumin and a fleeting existence. It needs something like 15 sprays to stay a couple of hours. A 100ml bottle lasts about 6 months in my hands.

This is my recent blind buy which I glad l did a right choice, the 2012 batch. Third time using it, under the hot sun during the Sport Day, this juice perform really well, by the end of the day, I still can smell it lingering around, still refuse to became skin scent,very great performance indeed. The smell kinda reminds me of Kouros, Allure Homme and Egoiste.

The pinnacle of French elegance and a landmark of a mans fragrance. Pour monsieur is a fragrance that goes beyond time and ages it is simply timeless. Sometimes you dont need much to make a timeless creation so as with pour monsieur it is a minimalistic fragrance that manages to lift you up and give you a touch of class and sophistication.

blast from the past sour citrus opening. dissipates fast. and you're then left with a soft projecting clean green vibe with a slightly spicy undertone. really airy and elegant. no surprise definitely more older gentleman leaning but if you love it why not. sadly like a lot of channel weak longevity. its a time machine. love it

This opens with a lovely lemon citrus/neroli and soon transitions to soft spices. It's very classy and discreet. The projection is below average but it does hang around for most of the day though the first couple of hours is where it is strongest. A very beautiful understated scent and the perfect scent for a gentlemen!

@Peter you are a great reviewer and talented writer. Pour Monsieur Chanel is unquestionably as masterpiece. For me, it's a late Spring to Mid-Summer staple when the sky is crystal blue, light breeze, gardens are in full bloom and it's neither cool or hot. PMC is a scent that will be relevant for the next 100+ years.
