Darby Rose

Delicate Bulgarian rose. Even with the sweet and sour aromas of Raspberry and Cassis, Derby Rose is not greasy at all. The quality of the raw materials is very high, and the Magnolia and sweet-scented osmanthus are not easy to detect, but invisibly, they all play a role in enhancing the richness of the floral fragrance. This rose goes the refreshing route. Derby Rose finishes with a faint medicinal feel of patchouli and Ambrette. The perfumer seems to want an antique chypre rose. Overall, Derby Rose is hardly retro, I smell it, it's basically a modern rose fragrance. Pretty cute.

The note says Lemon at the beginning but its not citrusy at all! Mostly very luxury but obvious bulgarian rose. Lovely and clean, soft and beautiful. But still its not so entertaining. It should be a safe choice.

Very interesting. I have this rose. They made it in maybe the early 1990's? I bought it at full retail at maybe I. Magnin or Neiman-Marcus, so before the Internet. It's a pleasant rose purported to use the David Austin Rose "Abraham Darby." I used to grow this rose (before the deer got to it) and this Chantecaille rose scent (the original one) was close enough to how the flower smells to convince me. I don't know why they're not bringing up the connection to the Abraham Darby rose now; it was a big part of its promotion in the original bottle. Maybe they're not using that rose now. I'm not sure David Austin has that rose in production anymore either. The original scent was a delightful rose scent; I'll add to this text when I find my bottle. Four hours later: Ok, found my bottle, and a review of the original Darby Rose on Basenotes. It says the original came out in 1999, so I'm way off on the date. (And I couldn't have bought it at I. Magnin either; they were unfortunately long gone by then.) Basenotes shows the pyramid as: Top Notes Lemon, Mandarin, Magnolia, Apricot Heart Notes Lily of the valley, Osmanthus, English rose, Bulgarian rose, Broom Base notes Guaiac wood, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Amber, Ambrette seed, Musk I'd say that's accurate, .... And several hours after that, I actually sprayed my old bottle, and smelling it again changed my mind on what I'd reported earlier, so I've rewritten this again. The bottle I have is nearly full and has been kept in a dark cabinet always. I bet I haven't sprayed it in at least 10 years, so I can't tell if the juice has changed because it's probably 18 years old, or because I don't remember how it used to smell. But it's a lot woodier that I remembered it. Especially the first 30 minutes or so Then an hour into it or so, the rose comes back, but I really smell the vetiver and sandalwood. Unfortunately, vetiver isn't included in the list of the new notes. And the new notes include raspberry in the top note. Oooh, I hope it hasn't gummed up the scent. So maybe that's why Chantecaille brought back Darby Rose. They think it will sell better now that the public has gotten used to rosy woodsy and/or rose oudy fragrances that have been saturating at least part of the market in the last couple of years. And Fragrantica, please list the 1999 Darby Rose separately; I can't be the only person who still owns a bottle. So I hope someone buys a bottle of the new stuff and reviews it here. I suppose I could drag myself off to a perfume counter. For research only...

This perfume has had a learning curve for me. Upon first smell, I thought it smelled just like a certain name-brand lemon floor cleaner with a strong powdery grandma undertone. A turn off. Since then, everytime I've worn it I've loved it more and more. It's a tart, bright lemony cassis, sweetened by the rose and floral notes, then warmed by the ambrette beneath. It's mouth watering, and definitively summery. Smell: 7.5/10 Longevity: 7/10 Overall: 7/10

Brother whoever said this perfume has citrusy notes is lying to you, it’s not even just floral. It’s like one of those singing roses from Alice in wonderland decided to become a thug for the queen of hearts. Do not overspray on pain of headache but very pretty in tiny amounts. Makes me want to drink an inordinate amount of aggressively milky sweet countess grey tea with Bulgarian rose buds though,

Amazing burst of rose with cassis & magnolia for support, leading to ambrette (unfortunately the glory doesn't last and that's all you're left with).

this is an interesting rose scent and I can see why a lot of people like it. I love the sweet rose scent you get right after spraying but as someone who doesn't like white florals the magnolia ruins this for me with the dry down and the soapy notes

This is a comment for the original Darby Rose by Chantecaille from the very early 2000s sold at Neiman Marcus, which is (I still have the bottle) a juicy, lemony, vivacious rose. If you love and miss the original Darby Rose, go find yourself a bottle of Serentitude by Valeur Absolue for cheap (Amazon or eBay), as it’s SO very close!

Holy cow, this is a rose! Woah! A rose...as in: the real flower, a big fat red, super red, vivid red rose. Too much of a REAL rose for me to bear. There's only like 1% of citrus, it's very mixed with the big, fat, red rose.

Having grown and loved the Abraham Darby rose, I know it to be a very fruity smelling cultivar. Really doesn't smell like an old fashioned rose at all, though it does have a full demeanor.

First time I smelled this I thought I found the one rose parfume I ever needed ....... but when it starts fade away it is soapy old lady rose ... not Bad but still not the one
