Hermit Coat

As a lover of fragrances that are both powdery and smoky, I saw the accords and ordered a sample the day this dropped on Lucky Scent, many months ago. It didn't really move me so I never reviewed it, but I've revisited it a few times. Smoky candlewax lightened by heliotrope, cold stone walls of an abandoned church. Thankfully very light ash or rose. Easy to appreciate, and more approachable than Relique D'Amour by Oriza L. Legrand which also has an old church vibe, and more hopeful than other popular church incense fragrances like Avignon which overdose on cedar. For me, not full bottle worthy but I would recommend others try it. If I had found this early in my perfume journey, I would have been transfixed. "A dark ashes clothes with an eremitic look. metalic leather , robotic animal my fathers oxfords with shoepolish slipped inside. he didnt need em often enough to not clean them between wears. this smells like a room , not one ive ever been in , but a room for sure . as far as there are perfumes like nature and perfumes like pastries , i believe there are perfumes like rooms. this room is more of a shed , tucked in a dry , dying wooded area , no more fresh pine needles , only faint resins wafting in from fallen trunks . theres tools on the wall , all with pittle leather cases so the air doesnt ruin their blades ... quite a waste seeing as the sun doesnt shine here ... i get none of the notes listed besides leather and metal , maybe a bit of smoke , but not anything like incense or tobacco ?

For such a cheap perfume, this offers a really lovely, quality incense and resin bouquet, it's totally unique and doesn't have any scratchy, cheap smelling crap underneath. The only gripe I could have is that it doesn't last too long but for the price I'm happy to reapply. The soapy, elemi opening with its light floral tones puts me in mind of vintage Amouage, like maybe silver man and/or opus I.

I blind bought this, and I have no regrets. It is Incense heavy, which I was expecting, as that is the theme of the brand. It is dark and slightly sweet. It does not smell like my other perfumes at all. The lavender and Heliotrope on top is brilliant.

Very comforting hermit vibe. Gummy incense with slight fir and wild flowers. Balsamic and round perfume that I wear to get cozy. When I overspray it, I get a very elegant smoke that lasts all day on clothes.

Lovely smoke and ash, and not as heavy as I was expecting. Where Heresy smells like the monk who works in the church, refilling the thuribles and cleaning up candlewax (keeping the doors open for a nice breeze in the summer), Hermit Coat picks roses from the Abbot's garden and makes incense from them. (friend tried it and got zero rose, I get a ton) Gets woodier and muskier as it dries down, but still with a nice bit of sharpness.

Smells like burnt paper mostly. Very clean heliotrope in the opening that is almost aldehydic - not as much as Candor though, the other from this house I have tried. The smoke is not characteristic of frankincense to me. The fragrance overall is not sweet at all either. Unapproachable as the name would imply. Most of these notes I dont get, its really just ash, musk, smoke, and heliotrope. Very cold and uninviting

Was surprised by how strong the ash top note is! Actually almost felt like my nose hair scorched a little in the opening. As it dries down it I get a lot of burnt marshmallow, then ultimately a salty, cold amber. Definitely a little freaky. Don’t love this for late summer, but excited to wear this when the weather gets cold.

ach, i wish the fir and rose were stronger in this! i do like her, though. ash, smoky, but not too meaty. grounding, intimate. a comforting powderiness. gorgeous when layered with a benzoin- or rose-forward scent.

Incredible smoky-powder opening, like a glamorous campfire. Unfortunately it fades to a pleasant but run-of-the-mill rosy skin scent within 2 hours for me.

Lovely honeyed, incensy mix that fades all too soon. Edit: On second wearing, I find that ashy note jarrs. Too astringent!

Okay this does last 2 seconds on me but it smells exactly like the rose incense we use at my church

I wanted to love this and by reading the notes I was like "this is the one for me" but unfortunately it reminds me of the smell of an aunts house I used to visit as a child and not in an "ahh nostalgia" type of way. I can imagine that people that like Moth by Zoologist are going to love this and I can't pinpoint why but I'm sure of it. Now when it comes to incense perfumes I'm a huge fan normally but I think in this case I'm missing the incense and only smelling the ash and heliotrope sadly so this one isn't for me.

I had to test my sample about 4 times because I kept forgetting what it smelled like. Smoky cocaine and baby wipe opening; fades away quite fast. I sampled both this and Holy Stick, but wasn't blown away by either.

I didn't get incense from this at all. To me it smells extremely masculine and smells very strong of pure leather, like you just walked into a leather store. I smelled no smoke, ash, or any rose in this fragrance.

Somehow I hate this and love it at the same time. It is nostalgia and longing and melancholy. This is a leather jacket in an old beater with a leaky roof and a bit of wet mold in the upholstery. The owner lights a cigarette and ashes on the carpet littered with gum wrappers. It is raining and it’s cold in the backseat of the car, he offers the jacket and she wears it even though it reeks. The defrost is broken and they fog up the windows as they guzzle cheap scotch. She is glad to rid herself of that jacket when he drops her off. He puts the jacket on, her Jean Nate bath oil lingers. He drives off, the muffler leaves a cloud of exhaust behind him.

The stick incense smell of nag champa's frangipani and magnolia will be familiar to many. There's a veneer of short-lived smoke that adds complexity. Dries down to a fairly old-fashioned floral soapiness.

The way this brand names their products kills me. It’s just so good. Sampling two of their scents has sadly left me wondering if the names might be their most memorable quality, or maybe I just need to sit with them some more. Hermit Coat is like one of those sparkly cards from the 90’s that would change between two pictures depending on which angle you viewed it from. It’s either leather, grass and sweet church incense or furniture polish, carpet cleaner aaaand... sweet church incense. Something in here evokes summer vacations in southern Europe - wandering between ancient stone ruins, gorgeous baroque churches and mediocre hostels with bad air con. I look forward to trying this in colder seasons, crossing my fingers for the smoke and rose notes to outshine anything remotely furnish polish-like.

Strange and unique DNA but so far my least favourite of the Chapel Factory favourites of all the ones I have tested and it is still pleasant and one I would consider buying if I wasn't planning to downsize my collection. It is a sweet sort of gunmetal powder and incense scent. Sweet with something smooth which is probably a floral but I can't pin point a particular floral and a bit peppery/woody. As this dried down it slightly touches masculine territory. Nothing really 'grabbing' me but I am enjoying wearing it and again would consider a FB if I wasn't about to downsize. Edit to add on rewear: I am getting more of the forest tree smell and rose with the gunmetal and I like it a fair bit less. Would not fb it anymore.

At quick glance this is a clean fresh floral fragrance mated with a cool industrial incense fragrance. Like Claire and John Bender getting together at the end of “The Breakfast Club”, it works and the sum is better than its’ parts. I am a big fan of incense in general but I am particularly digging these kinds of super-synthetic smelling clean incense accords they keep coming up with ala Dior New Look etc. There are some scent profiles that work really well with chemical offnotes and metallic/industrial feel and incense is certainly one of them (see many Comme Des Garcons scents for example). Cue Simple Minds...”I say nahhh...nah nah nah nahhh...nah nah nah nahhh...” 4 out of 5.

Ooo! I like! There’s a fiery smoke note in the beginning, campfire-like. And a creaminess underneath. The amber isn’t dominant but you can smell it in the background - rounding out the slight powder of the heliotrope. The user who said baby wipes and smoke is onto something. It’s not straight up baby powder or anything (which I’d be fine with). I’ve actually been long searching for a baby powder + incense scent and this is close to that vibe. But like I said, it’s not baby powder, it’s more like creaminess with a slight powder. The initial smokiness does fade in the drydown.

This has a delicious sweet/spicy opening with a puff of that incense smoke and the bite of the balsam fir. Dry down is powdery, almost soapy on me, though it's like,"built" by the incense/fir/ambroxan and that reads loud and clear. A nice bite to it. Probably important to note I used a blotter not a spray, but I'd love to get that opening a t o m i z e d.

baby wipes + smoke, and the rose note is the type that i dislike (powdery + cloying). not altogether unpleasant, but i can't imagine wanting to smell like this.

A lovely, quite unique scent but, be warned, it fades to nothing at a staggering pace. This is a deal breaker for me which is a real shame.
