Braggi

Ah, the early fragrance by Charles Revson prior to him launching the whole Revlon machine. Very nice spicy leather woody fragrance. I wouldn't have expected it, but Braggi has a similar vibe to another obscure vintage cologne called "Woto". This dark orange juice is potent, but refined enough to be dignified with a suit. Yes, it even does look orange when splashed in your hands, but thankfully doesn't stain. The whole feeling it gives is a definite 70's vibe and can end up feeling dated to some. But don't let the initial olfactory punch put you off. The dry down is sublime, with a rather bold simplistic mossy/woody leather accord, and not what I'd call animalic. I've gotten two bottles so far and they smell great, no sign of turning/degrading. I wouldn't be surprised if that is partly due to quality ingredients. Because this is hardly known these days, except for those who once wore it in their youth, prices are a bit all over the place. Very lofty "buy it now" prices frequently appear, but don't fall for them. Affordable auctions come around periodically for 1oz, 2oz and 4oz bottles. If you can get a 4oz bottle for around $60 or less, consider yourself having gotten a good deal. A solid 9.2/10.

When Braggi was introduced, it was clearly modeled after Aramis, which it resembles closely both in olfactory terms and in its original marketing campaign. Braggi is a leathery chypre with citrus, wood, spice and patchouli along with liberal doses of oakmoss. It's less peppery than Aramis, with a smoother transition from top to middle notes. Definitely a mature man's fragrance, not for guys under 30, or guys who wax their chests. This one is Sean Connery, not Pierce Brosnan.

I found some of this aftershave next to my dad's sink and dabbed my wrist. It is the smoothest leather I've tried thus far, and doesn't turn into sour-sweat stink, just feels like the warm cozy interior of a man cave, (what used to simply be called the den of a home): wood and leather and unsmoked tobacco. A mature, assured, and understated leather classic, wonderful stuff.
