Clinique Happy

My first ever perfume! So naturally Happy holds a special place in my heart. Super clean and fresh! Perhaps a bit too clean. A lot of people compare this to cleaning products which it can be a bit with the initial spritzes and even subtly in the dry down but it is mostly citrus, florals and clean musk. I will say the "clean" factor isn't like choking aldehydes clean which I am happy about. I don't mind aldehydes but too much of it is just sensory overload for me and headache-inducing. It's primarily a burst of citrus fruits that develops into a bouquet of florals and then settles into floral/clean musk. I was honestly surprised as I thought it was just citrus scented cleaner but there's more depth to Happy than people like to give it credit for; that being said I do wish it wasn't SO heavy on the citrus overload.. And in spite of all of that I still reach of Happy quite a bit. It DOES make me happy when I spray it so it's doing something right! Idk it just takes me back to the late 90s/2000s when things were more carefree.. Definitely in my frutiger aero vibe perfumes. If you like green, fresh, citrus and florals you can't go wrong with this. The amber and musk are lingering in the dry down but not overpowering at all so if those worry you don't let it. You're barely going to get any of that at least not to an overpowering degree. P.S. every time I wear this people tell me that I smell like their mom LOL. If you're going for a mom vibe this is definitely a perfume to achieve that but it's still so feminine and beautiful I think it can easily be worn by young women from 20s to 40s. Just a truly versatile perfume.

I first tried this perfume back in 1998 in Selfridges London and I liked how uplifting, sweet and fresh it was. I was enamored more by perfumes like Angel by Mugler back then so I never bought a full bottle until early this year when I saw it on sale online. I really like it and it is my go to whenever I wake up in the morning and want a scent that make me feel HAPPY. It really those represent it’s name well and maybe it’s not for everyone, which is fine. I smell the apples, plums, orange and a nice bouquet of flowers. It works great with my skin chemistry and I keep it in a drawer and have no issue with it changing in how it smells. My bottle had a golden liquid in it and not clear like the picture on this post is showing so maybe that can also explain why some people are having different opinions. The longevity is above average and the sillage is very good in the first hour before it mellows down. It is one of the oldies but goodies and is my second favourite in the Clinique line, the first being Cliniques Aromatics Elixir and the 3rd being Aromatics in white. Living in a country that has only two seasons; rainy and dry season makes you appreciate perfumes differently from when I lived in the UK. So enjoy what works for you and BE HAPPY 😍💜💛.

Vintage Late '90s Playful, Sparkling Orange & Evoked Peony... I remember when this first came out, and I thought it was the most uplifting, sparkly orange scent. When I smell it now, it still has that sparkly orange quality, but it's a lot more floral than I remembered and does hearken back to the late '90s/early 2000s. I could imagine Cameron Diaz wearing this in the film, There's Something About Mary, which also came out in 1998. Just like the film, it's light, playful & fun, with a late '90s/early 2000s vibe. Opens with a sparkling orange, but already the floral tones are there underneath. Grapefruit here adds to the sparkling quality, while mandarin emphasizes the fruity orange tones. As it transitions to the heart, the blend of florals reads like peony to me, although all the individual notes are there. Amber & musk support the citrus florals for average performance for a spring-summer wearing experience. It's a longtime love for me. Enjoy!

This was my first perfume given to me by my grandmother. She gave me a sample size of it and I kept it for many years when I was a teenager. I love to feel like I'm clean, happy, and Bright, which is exactly how this makes me feel. Warm sunshine, confident. Legally Blonde. Feminine and educated. Clean. This will always be on my shelf. Some people say this reminds them of cleaning products, but that's when they smell citrus scents. Whenever I wear this I get compliments. So I think it depends on how it blends with your skin. I love to spray this on one side of my body and spray Elizabeth Arden Green Tea on the other. Such a classy and fresh combo! (Just a note - I have never liked patchouli scents, but I do like some leather scents. If you don't like patchouli, you will probably enjoy citrus scents like this.)

I got a little sample and didnt think of it too much once i smelled on paper but i gave it a try the other day to wear to bed and oh my gosh its so beautiful, You really need to try on your skin to see the real deal! Its citrussy and floral its almost like a tea scent i guess those are the green notes but so fresh and calming and relaxing but it keeps the class and the style it doesnt smells like a cheap body mist! Surpisingly it lasted the whole night on my arms but i still have to wear it out and about to see how much it lasts after a good sweat lol! But so far its something i would love to wear to bed the rest of my life lol, like a meditation kind of scent you know! I really want to get a bottle, and ofc its a secure day wear, youre gonna smell so good and classy!

The main notes I'm getting here are freesia and musk. I'm not getting any of the citrus accords. It smells very, very clean, and the scent matches the design of the bottle. Very sleek and shiny. And clean. Did I mention clean? Nearly sterile! Inoffensive and chameleon-like. I'm getting the impression of the thin, glossy pages of a new magazine. Remember those? Does this smell like happiness? I think not, but it sure makes me happier than any gourmand. It's a bit overpriced, but definitely far from the worst offender in that category. Just use fragrancenet and get the smaller bottle. Longevity is not great, but lasts about as long as you'd expect it to. Edit 1/17/25: I'm wearing this today and WOW I'm getting an absolute blast of orange!

This is indeed a polarizing fragrance in 2026 and it’s definitely not for everyone. I sometimes wear it and I received diverse comments about it: my mother, a freshie/musky girl, loved it; my friend, who’s my same age and remembers what a female fragrance would smell like in the late 90s/early 2000s, said it ‘smells like mom’s hug’; but another friend, who’s not into citrusy fragrances, straight up asked me if I had my cat’s food with me in the car!!! To me, it smells exactly like Easter: a warm day of spring, mimosa flowers blossoming, a joyful holiday spent with your family, celebrating rebirth. It follows a quite complex evolution and for me it fades into a pure musk at the end of the day. It’s one of my top favorite fragrances.

This was a blind buy today and took me straight back to my late teens in the 90s ! Always wondered why I didn't purchase it before but it kind of reminds me of Estée Lauder's Beautiful back in the early 2000s. I sprayed it on my mum straight out of the box and she said it's the kind of smell that reminds her a happy days. How apt. It's not something special but it is a cosy fragrance ideal for wearing with a summer dress but equally nice enough for jeans and a big jumper. The green in this fragrance is more prominent after 30mins and I cannot smell any rose notes although Lily of the Valley is more noticeable. Overall a safe buy and nostalgic.

A HAPPY fragrance, aptly named. Bright citrus that is blended beautifully, it doesn't smell like only oranges or grapefruit or lemon, it's as if you grew every citrus fruit in a circle around you. The amber and floral notes are not very loud, but present enough to cut through the citrus (so that you are not ONLY smelling citrus). This smells like sunshine. There is a faint whiff of highly expensive sunscreen to my nose, but it is very subtle. A perfect day-time summer fragrance. You will feel happy wearing it. I still reach for this perfume time and time again. I have owned Happy for many years and will keep repurchasing.

First I sniffed it at the party and asked all my friends what perfumes they were using. Found out it was Happy by Clinique that put its spell on me. It was 18 years ago and I've been in love ever since. I can't count how many bottles I've used, tried Happy Heart too, but still keep coming back for the OG Happy. The perfect summer scent for me, but I also like it all year round when I need something fresh, refreshing, happy and beautiful. Love especially the grapefruit and flower notes in it. Today I came across Jour d'Hermes Absolu Hermès and to my nose they read quite similar. Now I have both of them 💛

Clinique: Happy is a beautiful scent. It has a warm, citrus and fresh scent, which I love. My favourite part is its flexibility - It is fresh enough to casually wear to work, then spicy/ citrusy enough for an evening out. It reminds me of watching live music on a Friday night during the cold Winter months. Just a hint though, double check which clothes you are spraying it onto - if you are wearing synthetic clothes, rather spray it onto your skin directly, otherwise it may smell synthetic or too sharp. It wears better on cotton or linen to get that warm, citrus scent.

This was my signature scent back in the early 2000’s. I recently came across a sample and I thought I would find it outdated like with my other perfumes from back then. But, it’s so lovely. It’s one of the few perfumes that works really well with my body’s chemistry. It’s fresh and floral with a hint of fruitiness. I can really pick up on the lily of the valley (my favorite flower) and the mimosa, mixed with a little bit of orange. I might have to get a full size bottle of this and just fully embrace the Y2K lifestyle.

I first smelled happy in the early 2000s and it was an immediate love that I still adore. My sweet friend wore it in middle school and when I would give her a hug in the morning before class she always smelled sooo good. It's citrus, bright, and fresh yet warm and comforting at the same time. This one is a sunny day and a clean white T-shirt. It's the beautiful girl next door and I think I will always keep a bottle of it. So nostalgic and a complement getter.

Twenty years later, and I still absolutely love and adore this fragrance. It smells exactly as I remember—so clean and fresh. It’s like a true citrus flower, not quite orange blossom, but a pure, clean, fresh, and slightly wet citrus aroma. The dry down brings a soft creaminess that adds depth, and the longevity is phenomenal—I can still smell it on my clothes days later. This is a fragrance I’ll always keep in my rotation.

My beloved grandma wore Happy exclusively in sample form from the Clinique gift-with-purchase sets. It’s perfectly like everyone says, so bright and so cheerful, and doubly blessed if you have memories of a beloved maternal figure from your childhood wearing it. The rollerball I got at Ulta is NOT GREAT, though - I think this scent benefits from vaporizing. It’s quite bitter in this format.

In my novice–hobbiest opinion, this is the GOAT in FL from Mar—Sept at LEAST. Everyone I get to smell the sprayer on my 3.4 oz bottle immediately clocks it a 9 or 10 out of 10. FYI y'all can purchase 3.4 oz via Walmart and or Amazon app starting ~$22, average cost ~$25, and I rarely find them over $30..... Those are some SERIOUS retail price savings Y'all are welcome ✝️ 🇺🇲 ❤️

One of those perfumes that people asked about whenever I'd be wearing it. The scent does give that uplifting vibe and I love how light it feels/smells. I stopped wearing it when I wanted to try heavier scents but I'd miss this and would stilll think of getting a bottle every now and then. I hope they sell a travel-sized version.

For me, this is the ultimate countryside summer perfume. You are sitting on a bale of hay. The sun warms the dry grass. Pollen floats in the air while bees circle lazily around. You are drinking your orange juice. The sun is setting, and white, freshly washed sheets move gently in the soft summer breeze. What not to love?

An ex-girlfriend from 25 years ago wore this, and to this day it's one of my favorite scents, ever. She obviously has me completely biased, I have no idea what I'd think of this on it's own, especially as I am middle aged now. But on the rare occasion I smell it nowadays, it will stop me in my tracks. So many memories.

I’m a man and I adooooore this! BUT, and a huge but... this really has to be compatible with your body chemistry, and if it does, the scent is HEAVENLY. If not? Let’s just say you’re going to smell all sort of unwanted mess from plastic chemical to a rotting whatever 😅. So test test test it on your skin first.

I’ve worn this since it was released. Always have to have a bottle in my perfume stash. It really does make me happy and think of long summer days when I was young and carefree. As they say, smell evokes the most memories and this takes me back to my early twenties.

A classic fresh and uplifting citrus scent. I can see how it comes across as dated with current trends for complex and niche fragrances. This one is quite simple and caters for the masses but I find it beautiful and easy to wear. Pure 90s nostalgia!

The clean citrus notes mingled with white florals. More than anything else, this fragrance brings back lots of memories for me. It is no longer a top favorite but it remains a steady presence in my life.

This really does smell like happiness. It is so zesty, so carefree that I can't help smiling when I spray it. It's not overly complex, it's just a perfectly executed citrus. Truly timeless.

Clean smell, I can see where people think of "detergent" with this but it settles nicely on my skin. Refreshing & uplifting

Oh, yes, Happy. Happy, Happy, Happy. What is there to say about this modern classic? So very of its time–I was a child of the 90s and 00s so I remember smelling this on many a trendy adult or older teen, and being in awe. I think one of my babysitters, a college student, wore this when she picked me up from school circa 2004. Just smelling this brings me back to the days of listening to Kelly Clarkson and Ryan Cabrera on the radio of the car on a sunny, speeding down the street with the window down. Now as an adult with a strong preference for fresh green and white florals, aquatic notes and citrus scents, to my pleasant surprise, Clinique Happy is just as good as I remember–only now I can wear it on myself than wait to smell it on someone else. Straight from the bottle, the bright citrus bergamot and grapefruit notes are very strong, almost sour, chemical and bitter–so it's understandable that this may put off a lot of people. However, it's worth sticking around for. It takes mere seconds to settle, and instead becomes bright, sparkly fresh, zingy and zesty. It's sweet but not cloying. It's a bit like a gin and tonic but with a grapefruit and orange twist–sharp alcohol at first, but crisp and refreshing. On me, it lasts about three hours, which works for me but it's something to keep in mind. And true to its name, it's a genuine mood booster even after the sillage has faded. It does indeed make me happy. If it's good enough for Elle Woods, then it's good enough for me.

I actually love this perfume. It was recommended to me by a friend. She said I wouldn’t regret it, and I didn’t. It’s such an upbeat and uplifting scent, and it truly embodies its name. The brightness comes from the citrus notes, but there’s a warmth and creaminess to it too, and I’m supposing they’re from the musk and amber. The simple bottle reflects that it’s not fancy scent, and it’s more casual and on-the-go, but nonetheless sophisticated. I see an athletic/fit person wearing this, but I can also imagine a fashionable female sunbathing on the beach. It’s definitely a summery daytime wear, and an everyday scent. It’s highly recognizable, though, and my qualm about it is when I walk past people, I’m possibly triggering some core memories for them from when they were younger. Although that’s normally a good thing, it makes the perfume dated. On its own, it seems fresh and modern, but because it came out of a certain period, it is like a time machine...it could be a good or bad thing, depending on how you look at it. Another thing that frustrates me about this perfume is it seems to spoil fast. I bought my second bottle, and maybe it’s how I store it, but it doesn’t retain its original composition for more than two or three years. In effect, it smells like rancid oranges at first blast, and it produces this sharp, synthetic note that stings the nostrils and is potentially headache-inducing. In its truest form, it’s a vibrant and euphoric aroma.

When I used it, years ago, I really felt happier when I wore it, I don't know why. Maybe because it was like a breath of fresh air for me in the closed space where I worked. It gave me energy. The first time I sprayed it, it smelled something like citrus plastic. A slight synthetic orange. But I like it. Then, it smelled like a new rubber toy from the 1990s. Or maybe some citrus fruit that was less sour and more bitter. A little like tea, maybe, but not a herbal one, it's more like black or green tea. I don't smell floral, but more fruity, not a ripe fruit, but rather a very green one, a zest of grapefruit or lime orange, because it's not a juicy, orangey orange. On clothes, the white flowers appear a little, but very little. I don't think it has layers, I feel all the same notes from the time I apply it until the time it runs out on my skin. It is light, youthful, clean, unisex, a perfume to wear at school or at work, even at the gym, in any temperature, to bring lightness and joy to your day-to-day life. Or focus, since it is not a sensual or charming perfume, but rather a perfume that invokes a concept from the 1990s, early 2000s, of independence and modernity, a perfume worn for oneself and not trying to please others. It is not a nighttime perfume or for fancy parties, perhaps for a beach party or more unpretentious occasions.

Another classic example of body chemistry getting its way. I can honestly say this is NOT my favorite perfume, nor is it really my style. I tend to go for gourmands and spicy orientals. This is so citrus and fresh, and not really sweet at all, in my opinion. It just so happened that my mother purchased this for me in my teen years, and ever since, it has been my signature scent. It just LOVES my skin. I've had billions upon billions of compliments, and whenever I tell people "Thank you, it's Happy" they simply can't believe it! It transforms into something absolutely gorgeous on my skin, and I suppose I am lucky, as I have heard that it can smell like dishwasher detergent or lemon pledge on others. But sometimes I feel like a slave to it. To date, no other fragrance I've tried has been able to do what this does, whatever that is, exactly. It's like magic. So I keep my gourmands and my orientals around just to appease my nose. But when I want to smell like "me" I reach for Happy.

For reference: I’m a woman in her late 40’s, and I purchased this as a decanted travel spray. I specifically chose this for nostalgic reasons and was not disappointed. Opens as citrusy/floral punch, then dries down to a bright, even mixture of both. It reminds me of a warm late Spring/or Early summer day. It smells like bright happiness in a bottle. Great for daytime wear. Feels casual and pretty. Lasts for a couple of hours. Others nearby will be able to smell it, but it isn’t overpowering. This perfume is wonderful for days when you feel beautiful, uplifted, and feminine. It’s a lovely classic scent. It isn’t my favorite, as there are other florals/citrus perfumes I prefer, but I do enjoy having it for occasional wear. Cons: might be a bit too sharp (grapefruit) or overpoweringly floral for some. Less is more with this one to avoid this. Spraying into the air and walking through, or wafting areas through, mist can help avoid this.

I used to wear this when it first came out in the 90s and this was a great burst of nostalgia. I do recall it being a bit deeper/muskier in the drydown but I'm sure it has seen a fair share of reformulation over the years. A bright burst of bitter, zesty citrus rounded out with florals and a bit of musk. I tend to get more of the bergamot/ grapefruit/ lily/ mimosa/ musk on the skin. It's a great uplifting scent during the cold days of winter. It can be a bit overwhelming if oversprayed so I would limit to lesser amounts due to the stronger floral notes, could easily be overdone or headache inducing for working in close proximity to others. When some girls wore this to high school in the 90s, you could smell it all the way down the hallway and knew exactly what they were wearing haha. This is still a classic 90s scent to me and I'm glad it is still being produced. Longevity and projection are pretty decent for the current day bottle.

got it at a wonderful rate im finally in an era in my life where I am leaning towards freshies and light florals this is very neat, clean and pretty. I get mostly clean bright white and pink florals with some citrus. lasts a few hours on me but sits close to the skin, this is a for me to smell kind of lazy personal summer days kind of perfume. puts me in a good mood for alone time. comforting. instant pick me up. manages to smell very refined and perfume like. does not smell like detergent or room spray or whatever very distinctly a perfume smell. this is perfect for many people no wonder its such a hit. for many people who just want to smell nice and clean and fresh at work this is so good more feminine leaning but a guy could maybe wear it. very feminine though I like this a lot helps me feel happy and relaxed and my husband loves it too!

I wanted to share something funny about this scent, I still have the dregs of an old bottle but haven’t worn it in years. Long ago when I was a younger woman I was in Las Vegas at a comedy show... the comedienne onstage started her set by pointing out that now, at her age, she has noticed her outlook on life has changed, and that’s been reflected in the advertising of cosmetics and even the names of perfumes, like Opium, poison... obsession. She then looked at me in the front row and asked me what perfume I wore. “Happy” I replied and the whole crowd laughed as she sarcastically said how nice that was... making her point and punch line perfectly. It does still bring back good memories, it also became a signature scent of a boyfriend, I couldn’t imagine wearing it nowadays... just a little too sunny and clinical for me, personally.

She may be a basic bit*h, but I will always have her in my collection. Modern ladies like to hate on her, it seems, but I can’t help it—I’ll forever have a soft spot in my heart for Clinique Happy. Very nostalgic for this 90s teen. Very bright and uplifting, I love the orange in it. If you’re looking for a beautiful sweet citrus floral, Clinique is your girl. I’m going to layer her with Paris Corner’s Indomitable and see if they belong together or not. Someone a couple reviews back called the bottle design ‘dystopian’ and depressing, but I’m going with elegant. Yes it’s simplistic. But they can’t ALL be eye catching and vibrant (read TACKY but in a good way lol) like (some of) today’s niche and Arabic designs. Trust me, some of those bottles are absolutely gorgeous, but the clean lines of Happy are nice too.

I don't think I would like this so much if it wasn't for the nostalgia. Reminds me of my early high school years and happy summer holidays in Queenstown. I really enjoy the citrus opening, but I can see why some dislike it. I think the freesia and some of the other florals bring in a laundry detergent scent that cheapens it. It's the definition of cheap and cheerful. To be honest I have always, and still do, prefer the men's version because it has all the citrus and less of the musky florals, without being too masculine for me. Think both are unisex depending on individual preferences. A relic of the nineties, it may not be all that exciting but it's still iconic. Not something I want to wear all the time, and definitely not wearing it to impress anyone, but I am glad she is still with us.

On my recent shopping trip, leaving Macys I decided to test this perfume at random. I was taken back to 90s - early 2000 era. Mature women at the time used to wear this scent, one of my managers back in the day, wore this... Anyhow, pleasant back in time reminiscence of this perfume. Balmy quality bitter citruss. Supporting underlying floral notes, I detect rose, soft musk and mimosa. There is complexity and multiple notes here blended quite well. I'm getting hints of cosmetics with citrus. I just felt instantly "Happy" just testing this out. It reminded me back of those times :) Its definitely a like. If you like citrus and floral done well this is it. Silage is moderate 3+ hours, and its great for warmer weather.

Well... it’s certainly a nice smell. What’s there to say... It’s a classical amalgamation of white florals and soft musks, accentuated by a citrus opening to form a clean, light, airy inoffensive, corporate perfume. This is mostly composed of conventional & indispensable ingredients in perfumery. Very well known assimilation of notes and frankly, it’s nothing interesting, nothing new, nothing worthwhile. It’s a good, quintessential spring/summertime, grooming smell (preferably for women) and thats it. You will like it, I can’t imagine anyone not liking it, unless if they have bad memories with these run of the mill perfume notes.

immediately she’s giving a photorealistic honey, but i have a very old and tiny rollerball and it was rather dry so i had to put on quite a lot but it’s very much the experience of sticking your nose in a bottle of honey. it’s like a demure amber rounded out by bergamot, crisp apple, and lilies of the valley. so soft very demure very mindful (or weak, as per aging) one of those samples that you randomly find and wanna use up completely just because it’s so agreeable and soothing. “hint of citrus and wealth of flowers” is so right- i’m happy i found this in the back of the cabinet!!

I remember when this first came out and it seemed like everyone was wearing it, so I steered clear of it. However, about a year ago I bought a little sampler box from Belk and this was one of the scents in it. My thoughts at the time were “outdated, cheap” and I tucked it away. Well today I decided to wear it and I’m glad I did. The name fits it perfectly, it really is a happy simple sweet scent perfect for summer. It has just the right balance of citrus, florals, and freshness. I may have to order a bottle of this! A great easy going classic that won’t break the bank.

At first this mostly smells soapy and alcohol like. It dries down to a vaguely citrus scent with some floral notes. There's something kind of strong and astringent in there that I can't really identify. It's definitely reminiscent of the 90's. Overall it's a nice scent that's a bit different. It doesn't closely resemble any other perfumes that I know. It's very fresh and clean smelling. I often get compliments from strangers when wearing this, so it definitely has a decent sillage. It's not one of my favorites overall, but I always enjoy it when I wear it.

As a child of the nineties, I naturally have solid nostalgia around this perfume. I *think* I would like it, even without the memories. I work in healthcare and have a soft spot for fragrances that don't announce "I put my perfume on today!". And this is like that- it's lotion-y and soapy and could just come across as being clean and put-together. About a year into my bottle I did get the balloon-latex note some complain if, but it seems to have worked itself out since. Simple orange peel and white flowers- quite uplifting.

This is such a classic 90's scent. This is youthful. This is a girl wearing a cute cotton sundress, hair up in a ponytail, sunglasses on while she grabs a glass of lemonade in the summertime. You have the bright citrus in this scent. You have the soft white florals. They blend together to come off as clean and airy and...well...happy. This was the first perfume for so many girls in the late 90's and I think almost every single girl I knew back then wore this. Oh what memories!!!

My daughter was given this and she didn’t like it so she gave it to me and it’s been a hot minute since I’ve worn Haooy! I used to love this oh so so much! It reminds me of the late mid-late 90s and my grandmother used to only wear Clinique makeup and she would always give me the quarterly makeup bag that would have all the little sample size products in it and I got this perfume so many times. It’s a classic citrus/fruity/ clean and inoffensive for every day wear! Love it!

I tried this in Ulta the other day after not having worn it in 21 years!! It smells exactly how I remembered it and honestly it’s a good one; doesn’t smell dated at all. There is this one off note in the base, imo. It’s funny because I smelled the exact same thing in my bottle back in 2004, and came to the conclusion that my bottle had turned. I came close to finishing the bottle, then tossed it, I foggily remember. Turns out that’s just how Clinique Happy smells lol.
