XX Art Nouveau Papyrus

My best blind buy to date. Such a great year-round scent and definitely signature worthy. This isn’t a vibe you can probably find from an ordinary department store, but at the same time, it’s not some barnyard-smelling, cat urine-like niche fragrance that is going to get you shooed out of the room. It’s rather unique, but if I absolutely had to relate it to something, I’d say it’s like a less harsh and fresher version of Tom Ford’s Beau de Jour. This is something that would be great in a suit, but just as at-home when you’re on a sunny vacation and want something a little heavier than a citrus-based fragrance. The spice to it makes it also suitable for winter, although on super cold days I’ll probably reach for something else, like Clive Christian X or No. 1. Versus the rest of the Clive Christian lineup that I own, this is in the top 3 of my 8. Just depends on the day for what spot it takes. Rock Rose is also masterpiece that I potentially would choose if I had to throw everything away but one bottle. I think this one does compliment Rock Rose a little. Not exactly in the scent, but just the overall vibe. I feel like if you’re blind buying but have smelled Rock Rose and liked it, you’ll probably like Papyrus. The Egyptian palace room connection I can definitely imagine, although this doesn’t necessarily smell like a “room spray.” It smells very royal. Reviews here seem to relate it to Aventus, and it doesn’t have that vibe really at all. I guess they’re just meaning from a “forget what everyone else is doing because this is better” viewpoint, which I agree with. I’m trying to cut back on hyperbolic ratings, but I’m going to put this at 10/10 across the board. Highly recommend, especially if you can get a good discount. Honestly, it’s worth it’s full price if you have the money. Update: I keep a piece of tissue paper in a quality leather duffle that I’ll spray when I’m packing. Just helps to scent my clothes a little and give a nice aroma when I open the bag. This fragrance is divine! Between the leather and this, it smelled like a million bucks. I think this one’s a master piece! I’ve also obtained a sample of Cypress by Clive Christian. Papyrus beats that one hands down, and it’s so much more wearable year-round. Very proud to own 8 of his fragrances. If I had to pay full price for any of them, it would be this one! Edit: sprayed once on the wrist and behind my ear. My girlfriend actually made me scrub this off. She’s maybe done that one other time. Don’t know how I feel about this anymore!

A dark and dry fougère, beautifully refined and composed. Papyrus is a fougère and a really good one at that. The opening is lead by bright and sharp notes of galbanum and basil, which are quite uplifting and contrast extremely well with the dark base of the fragrance. The lavender and tonka bean you'd expect in any fougère are also quite present, but they have a more "dense" and "compact" texture compared to other fougères, such as Beau de Jour (for example, which was a fougère I used to own and know quite well). Papyrus, as you might imagine from the name, has papyrus, which gives the scent a herbaceous and dry greenness, and it alongside the woods in the base give off a distinctly dark and dry vibe to me. Don't get me wrong, this is still a relatively bright and fresh fragrance, but this is so much denser and darker compared to other fougères, which are so bright and refreshing that they're invigorating and feel like an ice cold drink during a summer day, or more appropriately like the refreshing feel of walking out of a barbershop with a clean haircut and shave. I do think Papyrus leans a bit "old school", I'm perfectly aware a scent like this would be far more suitable for a successful middle aged man who has his priorities straight instead of a 23 year old like me, but nonetheless I think this does have a certain timelessness to it like many other Clive Christians. SGMarcus below me puts it perfectly, I couldn't phrase this sentiment any more accurately than he did. It's in this sense I think you'll appreciate Papyrus more if you have a nose for classic perfumery, as well as obviously Clive Christian's fragrances and fougères in general. Performance was a big surprise, especially in terms of longevity. Projection seems to be strong at first, as when I tried this yesterday with a single test spray on my arm my mom told me she could smell it from across the living room from me. Sillage is on the denser side as I could smell that same spray very noticeably and consistently for a few hours after spraying it on. It seems I'm unfortunately anosmic to something that's used in this fragrance, as I gave it a full wear today and it was considerably "weaker" than the test spray from yesterday, but I most likely did accustom my nose to the scent given how dense it was and the fact it was quite hot today. Longevity goes upwards of 12 hours, as I could still smell the test spray on my arm the next day, despite the inevitable rubbing I must have done during my sleep.

How come i havent written anything on my own signature scent! Oh my gosh!! Tolbh, this is my priciest parfume in my collections. And this is always come olup on my top list . I want to wear it all day and everyday however due to the price I have to pause using it. Its really fresh with woodiness ! Thats all. I dont even care about the notes. Cause i am just bad at recognizing the notes! But to my nose this is a fragrance that brings confidence in office, Joy in meeting up with people, even good on casual walk/ stroll . Nothing complicated, just a direct love by my nose! I will definitely buy another bottle when it finished! *need to save up* People: GO BLIND BUY THIS, and you wont regret every penny you spent

Wonderful! The opening really is gorgeous....!!! Reminds me of Roja Scandal on the opening but soon changes direction. It is far smiother than Scandal which is already a smooth blend, so that says something. This isn't what I was expecting! In a good way! This is my fifth CC after Cypress, X, 20th Anniversary & C Woody Leather. All four I absolutely love but so far this is my second favorite after Cypress. I can definitely detect similar notes to Cypress, C & X. Based on the previous three, I couldn't tell if CC has a trademark DNA scent profile within some of the collection but after smelling this I believe so. Will review after a couple of weeks. So far 10/10!!

Still a 10/10 perfume! This juice is balanced, super smooth, well blended, mysterious, rich and has some good depth. From the opening to drydown it is stunningly gorgeous. My only gripe is the price but hey that's CC right?! I will get another bottle when this runs out. Out of my 5 I own this one isn't a Projection beast, it is quite an intimate scent and goes the distance between performance wise. I've had good feedback while wearing this. This is definitely one of my 'Special occasion' fragrance, along with Reflection 45, Aventus & GIT. Bravo 10/10 👏👏👏

Wow, what a great fragrance? It’s complex and ever changing. There are only three notes listed, and yet, this smells like one of the most complex fragrances in my collection. At first, I thought, “that’s weird” but within minutes, it settles into an aromatic fragrance with just a little darkness - there is almost a soft oud presence. It’s a throwback to a “manly scent,” like something Cary Grant or Steve McQueen might have worn - but in a modern way.I have 5-6 CC fragrances and this is right at the top because of its uniqueness. Overall Rating 7.8/10.

@SniffySnifferton below : We might just need to form a support group of some shape or form to cater for those afflicted with the Clive Christian bug. All I can say is Thank the Heavens for decants and samples otherwise we might all be cobbling repairs on old shoes , or maybe some are already doing that. In any event, good things in life come with just a little sacrifice. As for Papyrus : Bergamot, Lavender and Papyrus so perfectly blended to conjure up images of what an Egyptian palace room might smell like. A truly joyous experience.

CC Papyrus is a fragrance for a well-put-together man over 45 who is comfortable in himself, and has nothing to prove and no desire to be anyone but himself. He carries a quiet confidence, shaped by where he came from, his family, and his life experiences. The scent is fresh and disciplined, with a strong sense of character and clear boundaries. It’s not made to please everyone, so you’ll either love it or you won’t, and that’s exactly what makes Papyrus so special. It has personality, presence, and integrity. Personally, I love it.

Today, I smelled both Aventus and Clive Christian XX side by side. It's almost as if I would give Aventus a D- after smelling Clive Chriistian XX Papyrus. Yes, I can never afford $550 for 1 ounce of perfume, but to spray this on and for it to last 12 hours is pure bliss. I would sell all of my fragrances just to own this. Come on youtube reviewers, stop reviewing clones, and get your nose on this. There isn't a better fragrance out there.

This is an amazing pure perfume. The projection is moderate, but the longevity is extreme. This is my favorite of the line. The best I can say is sample this, but be aware that this pure parfum will cost you 5 Benjamins if you buy from a brick and mortar. If you're a fan of papyrus, this is the best! Definitely mature. 30 years and up. Since the price is extreme, try it out yourself, and don't go by other reviews. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Powerful, green fougere. Reminiscent of Sartorial. I like it.

The word that conjures in my mind when I wear XX Art Nouveau Papyrus is.... Beige. Opens with what I suppose is an intentionally muted floral (in a masculine style) with a sprinkling of pepper. This lazily fades into a slightly bitter greenness with hints of lavender, but as someone mentioned below, it has a very light anise quality to it. As things shift again, the greenness merges into what I feel is the papyrus stage. Dry, almost dusty, yet retaining soft elements of the aforementioned lavender and bitter green. For those who like real world comparisons, there is a large chunk of time in the heart to base period where there are similarities to Santal 33, or All Saints Leather Skies. As a fougere it is modern in its concept (despite the ancient Egyptian reference) and for those worried if this has a 'dated' smell; no, there is nothing old fashioned or overly 'herbal' about this a la Aramis, or even Beau De Jour. It is Smooth. Refined. Easy to wear. Well blended. Has a few slight changes of pace from top to base. But it's very unchallenging and, despite all the notes I mentioned above it comes across as, well, Beige in the nicest possible way. Can't think of any situation where this would even remotely offend. The first hour or two projection is around arms length, but then sits as a very close bubble skin scent for, well, 7 to 10 hours. I just wish some of the individual notes popped a bit more. Sometimes things can be I little overly refined I suppose. But still, I do enjoy it in a zen sort of way...

I love papyrus. It's a bit difficult to describe, sometimes silky, other times woody, it can be dry and it can even come off suedish -- but once you know the scent, you'll know there's nothing else quite like it. However, I find the name is a bit misleading here as this scent is mostly dominated by geranium and basil more than anything. The papyrus does show up eventually, but only as a base note, kind of like an amber scent would. I'm also not so excited about its opening as it leans a bit feminine to me, since the geranium is not really minty, instead, it's more on the floral side. With that being said, the dry-down gets a whole lot better, so don't let this review steer you away. The scent itself is incredibly refined from top to bottom, as expected from Clive Christian, but with their prices, the scent should be! I agree, with the below comment about Aventus, these two shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence. It smells nothing like Beau de Jour either for that matter. The scent is perhaps the best of all Clive Christian and is worth the high price. Projection one meter for about 1 h and then for the next 4 h it stays close to the skin. It can be blind bought. Rating 7/10

The good news is that if you like papyrus, this fragrance won’t disappoint. However, the overall composition is just okay.

Damn you Clive Christian ! The more I smell the more I want and therefor the more money I need to make ! Oooooorrrr I guess my wife and children would be fine on 1 meal per day for a few months right ?!? We'll just call it "a challenge" and post something on some website and I can be a damn good smelling hero !!! Here is the official list of notes/ingredients straight from the Clive Christian site: "25% Perfume Concentration. Inspired by the Art Nouveau trend towards repetitive, organic shapes, this perfume is a nod to the scholarly sense of exploration and discovery that accompanied the era. The fresh green scent of Galbanum is piqued with a shock of Pink Pepper, complemented by a hint of warm Ginger and offset with the cool smooth tones of lavender, all resting on a robust base of Cedarwood, Tonka and musky Vetiver." This is another amazing fragrance to me. Very unique and although it may share many similar Ingredients to many other fougeres, just the quality and the unique blend Clive does makes this worlds apart in my "scroll" (you see what I did there) : ) I don't even like black liquorice to be honest although I do like absinthe and sometimes pernod, but somehow these notes all blend together to smell like the smoothest slightly sweet licorice blend, and at the same time really evoke the idea of Egyptian papyrus but as if it was just cut fresh from a tree or pulled out of some sappy resin almost... very intriguing and definitely keeps me going back to smell my arm again and again. Aaaand again. The only fragrance I have found that even smells remotely close to this would be Lalique's L'Insoumnis. It has maybe 50-60% similarity in the way the core fougere ingredients somehow blend to make a liquorice-eye slightly sweet smell, although that one has basil in it which creates that effect.

to compare this to aventus is weird, it's not simular at all. I'm surprised that someone above did, but i guess that's the world we live in now, where everything is compared to aventus. Let me say that I used to be in love with aventus, so I bought the largest sized 500ml bottle. Either the reformulation is bad or buying a bottle that large watered it down. But it now only lasts on me for an hour and projects half that time. Now for Papyrus. This stuff lasts forever, projects on me for 3 hours, which is great for my skin. Then becomes a skin scent for another 6 hours to 10 hours. Papyrus is very unique. I'm currently trying to discover a signature scent and am going down a rabbit hole of fragrances. So I've tried about 30 so far and nothing smells like Papyrus. It really smells like I feel Papyrus mixed with, I smell clove, cinnamon,and I feel like some saffron. There is some fruit on the top that lasts about 30 min, then it turns spicy. I agree with others that cypress is better and if it wasn't so expensive would most likely already be my everyday signature scent. But this is on that level. Not cloying at all, but people around will notice you. This is what i like, I like people to smell me when they are within 2 or 3 feet, but not across the room. All the clive christian parfums accomplished this for me. If you have the loot this is worth every penny imo. I do put x,cypress, and rock rose above this, but i put this above almost all others i have tried this far!

This is another expertly crafted fragrance from Clive Christian. Papyrus straddles the line between spicy and woody, with pink pepper and a touch of ginger amping up the spiciness, with lavender, cedar wood, a a subdued vetiver adding a fair amount of balance and depth. I personally don't smell any tonka, which is a note that I can usually notice quite readily. All in all a very fresh, spicy green scent. This is much more dynamic than most fougeres I have sampled, which is what CC classifies this as. However, it doesn't have a lot of sillage, which is a problem that affects all of the masculine noble collection (except cypress) as far as I know. For my money I prefer Vision in a Dream Psychedelic, which I feel is similarly built around papyrus, but is more interesting and projects better. I would consider Psychedelic the nighttime version of this. They cost the same, ounce for ounce. I also would recommend Clive Christian Cypress above this one. While distinct from each other, I think they are wearable for precisely the same occasions, though Papyrus is more subdued. I still give it a thumbs up for those completionists with deep wallets.

Top Quality notes, wonderful smelling. Much better then Aventus.
