No 16 Tomato Leather

I love this fragrance... it is a very nice and realistic, balmy-woody-smoky with green that goes underneath... well known tomato leaf smell somewhere from early childhood brings up memories going into the garden and picking tasty tomatoes. This is one of maybe 5 fragrances I really remember from LA Artisan Fragrance salon and I have smelled many fragrances that day. There were about 20 brands and all have at least 5 fragrances some more.

This is gorgeous smooth balsamic woodsy smoky leather I can smell this clean green note also, transparent and mingles under the others. Very unique, great quality!

You definitely can tell the tomato leaf in the opening quite distinctly, but I wouldn’t say it’s 100% realistic. The clary sage is also a bigger proponent in the profile, and with the two of these, combined with the lateral notes (benzoin, myrrh, incense), make an abstract leather that is a very reminiscent sibling to Synthesis by Xyrena (PVC-like aspect of leather). However, I think here it’s more of a complement to the overall addicting, abstract leather that can be found in Boxer by HUNQ. The linden blossom is kind of a tough one for me to manage here however—it’s not overbearing but it’s definitely noticeable, and I just struggle with most floral notes, but over a bit of time it’s definitely presenting itself as more of a close cousin to Boxer, and a sibling to Synthesis. This is probably the “wearable sour” aspect that Boxer could have potentially used, but it’s probably good that they didn’t because it doesn’t really meld with the profile harmoniously. I don’t get a substantial amount of oud here, but it’s likely here as a support bias. This is probably one of the first frags I’m having a hard time making a decision on a FB, but after testing a swatch with a blend of Boxer+N16, I conclude that I will forego this scent—I would also prefer to enjoy it on its own. It’s a solid, more concrete alternative that trades the faint cherry/light aromatic from Synthesis by Xyrena to the lemon substitute, though projecting less initially, has better long term performance in terms of average projection and longevity compared to Synthesis. The lemon here doesn’t make it feel more ‘sweaty’/’worn in’—it’s more of a facet on the cleaner side. As a result, the PVC interpretation is a bit less raw but more on the clean side. For a "brand new dress shoes" smell look no further than English Shoe Factory by Chronotrope.

Tomato leather is a factory fresh motorcycle jacket left to rot in a patch of tomatoes. I mean this in the best way. Opens with a strong chemical leather both softened and invigorated by tomato leaf. The green here is sharp and fresh, like fresh sprouts pushing through soil in the springtime. There’s something not-quite-human about this opening, bringing to my mind the motorcycle alien drones pursuing Scarlett Johannsson and her victims in Under the Skin. However, much like Ms. Johannsson’s alien character in that film, tomato leather soon begins to soften and humanize. Unlike some other reviewers, I get a full spectrum of leather experience from this scent, slowly becoming warmer, cozier, and more worn. Benzoin and tobacco play a major role in this, while the oud brings a subtle earthy powder. The suggestion is of decay minus the ick factor. On dry down this almost reminds me of revlon ciara or even shalimar type interpretation of leather, but the persistent tomato leaf note keeps things springtime appropriate. Edit: I have been getting lots of compliments on this one, and based on what I’m hearing the silage seems to be giving more “incense” than “leather” on my skin

I mean, they ain't lying with the name. On first spray, boom - it's a shiny new leather jacket in a tomato patch. Not a bad thing. Truth in advertising and all. As it dries down... here's that tobacco and a bit of myrrh, and something lightening it up, I guess the lime blossom. It's a really pleasant leather that doesn't dive too much into the incense / smoky territory, though there's a whisper of smoke that shows up more as it dries down, and it's thankfully free of the powdery notes I often find leathers paired with. While in the same family, it's the counter-argument to something like Hiram Green's Hyde. Both have their place. This is more everyday wearable, though. Do you need it if you have a really pleasant everyday leather already? No. But it'd be different enough that you could, just to have a couple options to break things up a bit.

This is a lovely, highly unusual perfume--green leather! I have smelled many clean, green, grassy perfumes. They are among my favorites. But I have never encountered one that contained leather. This is quality leather too, like a smooth and sexy black leather chair. There is nothing muddling the scent, it retains a crisp and translucent quality as there is no spice and not other "dark" or rich notes, other than black leather. This perfume is sharp, edgy, modern, and authentic. It is very artistic. Sillage and projection are commendable. Leather addicts must sample!

Dark skin, shiny, barely treated, tarry, slightly smoky. The sage and the green note of the tomato leaf that bind together for a long finish with the rubbery myrrh and the powdery oud. Realistic, poisonous, unusual, bitter, bitter as if just greased, then drier and sweeter. Basically genuine leather, simple but unusual, pleasant to wear and fun to layering. Good.

Has an acrid gasoline-adjacent opening which is mercifully brief. I don't smell any oud in this at all, which makes it a lighter more wearable leather. However, it leans toward waxiness instead and this detracts a little from the tomato leaf aspect. It smells quite herbaceous near the skin and I wish this carried through more to the sillage. On a test strip the scent was framed by a lovely warm incense, but this note sadly vanishes on my skin. This is a unisex scent to my nose and is inoffensive if sparingly applied. After the opening, the fragrance doesn't change much and lasts for more than 6 hours.

What's a fresh-outta-the-plastic brand new leather jacket like you doing in a funky, filthy, bursting green garden like this?? Very realistic new leather, not worn in and comforting. And the fresh green stemminess of the tomato vine. Tomato stems are covered in hairs that trap insects that land on the vine. Dead insects fall to the ground, where they decompose further into tomato fertilizer. A nifty mechanism tomatoes have evolved for themselves! We also both noted a medicinal note somewhere between camphor and eucalyptus. He leaned closer to sniff my forearm, then came the revelation: "Oh! Hmm that smells like....... never mind I don't want to ruin it for you..." Of course I wanted to know, and yes, it ruined it for me. And misery loves company so I must share as well :D *drum roll* It's urinal cake! The acrid chemicals of sealed leather, the aromatics, the medicinal aspect, all add up to a urinal cake accord that lasted about 90min. Which is about 85 minutes longer than I should have to tolerate in order to get to "the good part" of a fragrance. As for the good part, he had this to say: "A spicy, cold, glowing smell." Ok then!

For LUSH fans, you will recognize this smells almost identical to Charity Pot Lotion. Although Fragrantica does not list it as an note in the scents pyramid, the composite result is something remarkably similar to unrefined cocoa butter. This scent is definitely not mainstream and is certifiably niche in it's nature because it's not a scent for pleasing the masses... It is complex, rich, sweet, sharp, dark, mysterious & conflicting. (The closest possible cousins to this scent may be "Lidge" or "Kokorico" but only because of the loose cocoa familial connection.) Tomato Leather also has an organic sharpness which is likely the tomato leaf and a suede-like leather that underlies the entire accord making it approachable and non-threatening.

The first impression is the smell that hits when you enter a department store—new polyester clothing and "leather" belts. I wish the tomato leaf smelled more earthy but it smells bright here, which makes it feel synthetic. That synthetic scent coupled with the leather made me smell like chemicals.

This is the story of a love affair. I saw her for the first time in a little black box labeled “Scent Trunk.” Never having heard of the house before, I didn’t know what to expect. No. 16? That didn’t tell me much. I spray it on the back of my wrist and instantly – I’m transported back to the tomato trees in my grandmother’s Mobile, Alabama garden. Memories of her laughter, her awe-inspiring kindnesses, her generosity, and her hugs all came flooding back. We all like to blithely comment on how a scent can take you away to another world – but when it takes you, it doesn’t ask you first. It just whisks you away. No. 16 (Tomato Leaf) was created by Dannielle Sergent, perfumer and creative director at her house called Cognoscenti. It was released in 2012. So what on earth could cause such a flood of memories? No. 16 has notes of tomato leaf, clary sage, linden blossom, leather, agarwood, benzoin, incense, myrrh, and tobacco. While I’m sadly disappointed with most perfumes that claim to be a leather (Knize Ten, Cuir de Lancome – I’m looking at you), this really *is* unmistakably a leather. No. 16 opens with a light, grassy herbaceous quality that takes the place of a traditional citrus top. It has notes of a freshly cut lawn with a few drops of raw sap which are lovely. After a few seconds, it becomes apparent that this isn’t grass at all, but the essence of crushed tomato leaf and that redolent, verdant earthiness that it always has. For me, the clencher is the leather. It’s Goldilocks of leathers: not too subtle so the leather is unable to assert itself, yet too not aggressive that the softer aspects of the tomato leaf get lost. For me, tomato leaf has always had a soft suede or leather note to it anyway, so the addition of leather seems seamless and natural, even though to my knowledge I can’t conjure another tomato leaf-and-leather dominant scent. Everything sits on a soft agarwood and incense base which rounds the perfume with just the right touch of smokiness. I don’t think this too often of smells, but it comes to mind more about leathers than anything else: No. 16 very well might make your knees turn to jelly if you smell it on your significant other. I would say it leans slightly masculine, but I know women will love it too. I came very close to purchasing this last year, but ultimately didn’t. I’ve already decided that I will probably rectify that this year. After having had a chance to smell other scents that Dannielle has made, I’m so glad that I’m now “in the know.” With a small range of perfumes (with more to come we can only hope), she has spanned the range from the ethereal of No. 1 (Bergamot Sage) to the warm, autumnal No. 19 (Warm Carrot) to No. 16, an invigorating take on a green leather. Greatest of all, there’s an utter lack of pretentiousness in the scents and presentation, while still remaining classically beautiful, that makes it that much easier to “fanboy” over. Look forward to future reviews from Cognoscenti, which will certainly be forthcoming.

The leather from your lover's boots reaches you as she twirls playfully in the sun's beaming rays - her dress sings a summer serenade to the beat of your heart. This beautiful dance spins day into night as a cool air creeps up on the couple and the stars spill across the midnight blue of the sky. You light a fire as your lover inches closer - the smoke dances off the tips of the flames and surrounds the two. A pipe finds its way into your hand and you absently pack it with rich, earthy tobacco - once lit, the smoke mingles and lingers under the far-reaching arms of the giant oak tree. You blow massive rings that reach out to become part of the endless sky. The couple snuggles tightly, drenched in smoke, cloaked in leather, waiting for the morning to come....they can think of a few ways to wait out the night... Day 68 - Under Listening to: The Civil Wars - I Had Me A Girl Notes: There are few fumes that are actually named after the notes they truly represent - this is very true to its name! It opens with an unbelievablely true note of tomato leaf mixed with a very dry and clean leather. It takes about what to expect hours for the wonderfully smoky wood to pop into perception which is delightfully accented by rich tobacco - this phase comes out of nowhere as all you can sense is the tomato and leather for quite some time. Well, the base of this picks up a hint of sweet warmth (smoked myrrh and benzoin) and morphs back into a very realistic leather and smoke that lasts for hours more. If you love leather, this is a pretty fantastic addition to any wardrobe and should be fit for anyone!

A hardcore clean leather, this has very strong chemical notes that new leather gives off from the factory -- think of how a box of brand new dress shoes smells when you open it, and this is it. The overall visual image is of clean "black" leather, echoing the tarry, petroleum-like nature of shoe polish. Its not unpleasant, but compared to a fragrance like Floris' Leather Oud, the leather smells "stiff" and at a lower price point / level of quality. Initially, there is an almost astringent freshness to the opening, like aromatic leaves cut open and tingling your nostrils, but these elements are overpowered by the processed leather note, and the slight sharp green of the tomato leaf and clary sage fade as a more hazy/powdery base of incense, benzoin, and myrhh emerges. I personally didnt get any tobacco. Throughout the limited evolution, the fragrance could be described as almost "soapy" clean. I am a big fan of leather fragrances, and unfortunately it is a note frequently paired with over the top orientals or disgusting animalics, so I would recommend this as a sample-worthy fragrance for someone who wants to experience a truly leather-forward fragrance; but its stark, in-your-face chemical vibe recalls more the "brand new" shoes of a Payless or discount clothing store than of a high end designer or car interior. As I had mentioned, those looking for a more integrated, smoother, higher-class impression are encouraged to try Floris' Leather Oud (another clean, smooth leather devoid of animalics). As for the Cognoscenti, performance is good at 8 hours, with light to moderate projection.

yet another scent i thought i would love based on the notes but !!!!! unfortunately do not enjoy very much... the leather is of the brand new, plasticky variety—almost has a bit of a chemical formaldehyde element in the opening. the tomato leaf and benzoin do eventually sweeten this up a bit, but the too-new leather smell sadly remains throughout the duration of the fragrance.

Cognoscenti 16 is the epitome of sexiness! Picture yourself sitting on the back of a Harley....the smell of his black leather jacket along with some tobacco from his hair blowing into the wind...inhaling!! you take it all in.If you are a big fan of leather,try this,you won't regret it!! Gorgeous and unisex!

I'm getting a faint whiff of tomato leaf and then it immediately descends into leather, leather, leather - with a brief stop in doll head territory. I had really high hopes for this one, and if you're into straight-up leather, this is for you. Unfortunately, it's not for me.

What an awesome fragrance this is. As I get more into leather dominant fragrances this one is going to go way up on top of my list of leather fragrances. And that tomato leaf note. WOW, it's amazing together!! And from an awesome perfumer too! BOTTLE WORTHY for sure!
