Blackpepper

(January 2020) My signature scent! Still the favourite in my collection. I remember when I first tried this out at a perfume counter. It was Valentine's Day 2019 and me and my love were browsing perfumes before having our Valentine's Day dinner. I tried this out on my wrist, and I don't know what it was, but my skin had an extreme reaction to it. It caused a really bad smell, so I went to scrub it off in the warehouse bathroom. It was hard to get it off, in fact I didn't really succeed. Later when we were having dinner, I was suddenly catching some really nice wafts from my wrist. My skin had calmed down and there was the most beautiful smell of pepper and smoky woods. My love kept sniffing my wrist all night. Months and months passed until last fall I was at that same warehouse and decided to try that scent again. I sprayed it on my wrist again, but this time I didn't get that strange, bad smell. Instead, suddenly I vividly remembered that wonderful night in February and how fantastic this smell was! I went home and couldn't stop sniffing my wrist all night. I went to bed thinking "How did I never buy this?! It's the most gorgeous scent ever!" Waking up the next morning the first thing I did was go into town and buy myself a big 100ml bottle. I didn't say anything to my girlfriend, I just put it on when we were going out later that night. She passed me by and said "Huh. That's not your Zadig & Voltaire, is it? Oh wait, I know! It's that peppery one! Did you buy that one? OMG that is the best scent ever!" The funny thing with Blackpepper is that it's my favourite fragrance and on my perfume-eating skin it has the best projection and performance of my collection. (Except maybe for TF Ombré Leather) It's crazy. Most perfumes don't really last on me, but this one does! Also, people say it really suits me, and I get a lot of compliments both from men and women. Other people are simply curious and come up to ask me what the hell I'm wearing because it doesn't smell like any perfume they're familiar with. And that's right, it doesn't! Beautiful smoky woods, and it just goes on and on. The other day I put my shirt in the washing machine and it still had some leftover Blackpepper scent on it after washing! Go figure! I get that this is officially a unisex fragrance, and personally I'll wear anything, even really floral fragrances like Velvet Orchid, but this is pretty damn masculine to my nose. It's a special occasion scent though. I've worn it to the office, and my colleagues loved it, but it's not something you'll want to wear every day. At least, I don't. It's too special for that. My girlfriend says it turns her on like nothing else in my collection. I'm so happy with it, and will immediately repurchase that big ass bottle as soon as this one threatens to empty out! For me personally: Longevity: Long lasting. Good projection for several hours, then sits closer to the skin for a long time. I can still smell it after showering sometimes. Sillage: a few feet for me! Not too shabby! All in all, fantastic perfume: 5 stars!

The top notes are smoke and burnt rubber Middle notes are Cedar spiced wood and black pepper Space notes is musk it's kind of the delicious smell that somebody might have some spending all day tending a bonfire with a hint of space that. The perfect scent for fall it's very reminiscent of bonfires burnt wood and soft crispy leaves on the ground the smell of an Autumn day but also with the burnt rubber smell full stop the burnt rubber smell is not unpleasant because as it mixes with the spiced Woods it creates and ood it creates a very exotic unusual smell , that is delicious in the same way that the bonfire smell is delicious I would say it's kind of addictive very dark quite sexy but at the same time it doesn't give you a headache it's not Rich it's an absolutely unusual smell if I smelled someone wearing it with think they'd been in a very delicious smelling bonfire beautiful sense of spiced gentles spiced wood like cedar . It's kind of it's definitely unisex and it's perfect for dates the sillage is very gentle and only very close maybe you can smell it from six inches. The longevity may be three or four hours. What I wear it comma probably not full stop it is an absolutely addictive beautiful scent for autumn but I would have wanted something more spicy and punchy this is more a gentle cozy almost kashmir-like scent with an edge. I would say this fragrance is suitable for men in their 30s plus because it's a mature smell. I would say the type of woman to wear this is quite edgy quite a bit alternative . Would I wear it on a date yeah definitely but I would have wanted something a bit more beautiful maybe a bit more spicy maybe a bit more something floral or something more spicy it just feels a bit too musky and powdery for me

A creamy, powdery black pepper and dry wood scent that develops the smoothest ambery dry-down. It opens with a blast of realistic black pepper that’s dark and earthy and so spicy that it makes your nose tingle. To some wearers, it could give a spicy B.O element at the start. There’s an aniseed type of fennel/liquorice note in the opening. But the dry-down gives way to a smooth woody haze of dry, peppery patchouli, with a gentle sweetness of tonka to give an amber-type of warmth. I don't get any oud, maybe from a slight medicinal woody-way. The smooth, creamy, powdery, woody dry-down is everything. Unisex and you can wear this for all occasions and it lasts a reasonable time. Definitely worth owning. As a comparison to Wonderwood, they share a similar quirky Comme Des Garçons DNA but Wonderwood is a smoky-smooth creamy-wood whereas BlackPepper has zero smoke but has a sweet tree resin element and more vibrancy from the dynamic pepper. Edit: I love it so much I’ve bought it and both myself (I’m female) and my boyfriend wear it. Only 3 sprays isn’t enough to last but 5-6 sprays and it lasts all day. It’s herbaceous and resinously alluring and oh that creamy wood dry-down! It reminds me of the warm earthy herbal trees under the hot Mediterranean sun of the Balearic Islands. I’m currently in Ibiza and the coastal countryside smells just like this. A peppery, herbal patchouli, which suits the metallic purple bottle.

My favorite of everything I sampled from CDG. Blackpepper is so smooth and sophisticated and it fills a hole in my collection-- something that isn't challenging to wear for a formal occasion but also doesn't smell like all the other "formal" coded fragrances out there. Part of the genius of this is that it's a perfect chameleon-- wear it with jeans or a suit, day or night, hot or cold. It responds to the character of the wearer, if you're dressed formally it has the notes to support that, but it doesn't go so formal that it would be out of place in a casual setting. The pepper itself is the first note one detects, followed by a complex and very "dark" feeling cascade of woods and earth. Think Encre Noire but better, darker and edgier. Similar to Terre d'Hermès too but updated and contemporary. This feels "goth" to me in a very high fashion, sophisticated way. Wear with head to toe black but it's, obviously, CDG or Rick Owens or similar, formal or casual but the color is black. Once the pepper dies back a bit the woods and patchouli are the dominant features, and such a well used musk and tonka-- not quite there on their own but used to give body to the dryness of the woods. I wish it projected a bit better but it smells so good that I can forgive the more moderate performance. It's a masterpiece.

Blackpepper and Wonderoud have replaced Comme des Garçons’ Black and Wonderwood in my collection. Blackpepper has all of the spicy, lava-rock edginess that I loved in Black, but it doesn’t get drowned in the Liquid Smoke & liquorice accords that took centre stage when I wore the latter; I literally smelled of charred hot dogs. This has a tiny bit of that going on, but it somehow works, and it just smells of what it should, no surprises—CdG are so skilled at this, but I also appreciate their surprises, like Concrete, which isn’t a literal translation of it’s label—dry, but somehow not scratchy, black pepper, with just a hint of sweetness & petrichor loveliness (I LOVE a good petrichor). I don’t always love everything that Comme des Garçons releases, even though I at least try every single one (I’m a hopeless fan-girl of the brand) and I find that I at least like a majority of them. I’m tired of the pebble bottles (sell stands with them, man!) but I just can’t help myself when their contents beckon with quality fragrances at such great prices. (But how about some more of those great chunky bottles a lá Standard (Artek) & the Odeurs, CdG?)

I first sampled this at Liberty in London around the time it first came out. I instantly liked it but I didn’t like the price tag at the time. I picked up 50ml on offer about six months ago and it’s just as I remember it. It’s pretty much what it says on the box, Black Pepper! The initial hit just screams pepper before it calms down to pepper with a hint of patchouli and musk. I’ve been wearing it for twelve hours today and I’m still getting the pepper hitting the back of my nose. There’s nothing subtle about it at all. It’s just a straight up fragrance, no water, no mixer, no ice. It’s a strange thing because the favourite fragrances in my collection are those that I find bring a feeling of relaxation , calm, comfort and wellbeing. This ticks all the boxes of a really outstanding fragrance, great smell, longevity, natural and there’s an obvious quality. It just doesn’t get me where the fragrances I love take me to. Is it special enough to match its retail price, in my opinion no. Do I like it enough that I will be making another purchase anyway......maybe.

I remembered the first time I smelled this, I was blown a way by how it worked. It was a literal black pepper, cracked, punto. After a few seconds, it turned to warm wood with lingering hint of citric tone from the cedar (my favourite wood smell). Then it became dry, almost powdery, dusty, pencil sharpener image. The cracked pepper lingers in the background and always there accompanying the whole journey. I was too afraid at that time to take the full bottle of this. Couple years later, after CDG 2 Man and Wonderwood, I'm still thinking about this parfum, and finally getting the full bottle. It became a benchmark for my frontline scent ever since. Straightforward, realistic, sharp and edgy. All black attire, sunglasses, walking on the concrete pavement of dusty cities in the daylight. I love it. Im my experience, it is a an intimate fragrance, only people in close proximity would smell it. Works best during colder day, but still ok during warmer days too. Looking forward to get the second bottle once it's done.

Simplicity can be so beautiful when done correctly, and here it was achieved. Notes list might suggest another attempt at "men should smell like this" type of perfume, I'm glad it isn't so, not completely at least. Anyone can make it work for themselves, age, gender...life philosophy. All thanks to its simplicity. This scent doesn't suffer from being linear however, it is just what it says without pretense. The black pepper is softened by wood and musk nicely, spiciness grounded in soft powder. Reminds me of baking a bit, like smelling ground black pepper straight from paper packet. The feeling I get while wearing this scent is similar to wearing an all black outfit. Comfortably confident. This whole composition is so contemporary and stylish to me, straightforward and precise but not boring. Haven't decided yet if I can justify the price for a full bottle, but I find myself reaching for my small sample often. I'll see once it runs out I suppose.

I absolutely love this scent. It’s got an elegance about it but in a slightly unhinged way. Definitely fringe style, especially when it’s fresh on your skin. It starts off wildly peppery, minerally, resinous, dry, and spicy. When the black pepper starts to cool down more notes show up, the patchouli is pretty strong as well as the cedar. An awesome mix, there’s a buttery warmth to the wood, like varnished that just got sanded. As the cologne wears down, the white musk shows up in a sweet creamy way that is a total suprise but meshes really beautifully and supports all the spice. Very little pepper towards the end which is a bit sad but an interesting evolution anyway. Scent lasts 4-6 hrs. Projection fades after 2 hrs or so and dries to skin scent, slightly peppery, herbal, and cedary. Wish it lasted in its early form for a bit longer. Still can’t get enough of it and will buy a FB.

It smells like fresh black pepper, true to its name. Exactly that. You can't go wrong with this one, it's clean, fresh and safe. I personally choose CdG Black over this but by no means an insult to Blackpepper. A black pepper fragrance cannot be done better IMO. I like that extra smoke in Black, is all. Literally if you want to know how it smells without testing it, go and crack some black peppers, moist it and smell it, this comes very close. Another justification if at all matters is that this is one of the few fragrances I know that uses Givaudan's Pepperwood captive ingredient. Projection: I think it's good, you don't need a slap in the face with this type. It projects well enough. Sillage: Not sure. Maybe in warmer temperatures it improves but from what I could test it's hard to tell. Feels like good for office or closed spaces.

I love black pepper and CDG has nailed a photo real spice without the typical, sweet clichés, usually applied to oud and pepper scents. The projection is sutil throughout which challenged my expectation in mid to dry down the first time I applied it but then something extraordinary happened, which I’ve not found with any other fragrance. This is a magical perfume, just when you think it’s gone it reappears a few hours later, deeper and darker, creating an aura of spice enveloping me and projecting like a pepper afgano. People say it’s línea but I think it builds and reveals layers of earthy green undertones, maybe only detectable by those who have nostalgic or have happened to encountered pepper in a raw and endemic way. Imagine drinking fine wine under a pepper tree in Africa. A true understated gem.

I was ready to dismiss this perfume simply on its name, Blackpepper. That note is not a favorite, in fact I can’t think of a single perfume in my wardrobe where pepper is dominant. I also assumed from the reviews below, that this would be a manly perfume. What a beautiful surprise. Blackpepper is a smokey, dry pepper with gorgeous, complex woods—zero florals, sugar or vanilla detected. I’m loving the synthetic Oud used In this composition. It’s one of the easiest to wear Ouds I’ve ever encountered. It’s probably what gives Blackpepper extreme performance: 12 hours and more. Lastly, this truly is a unisex scent. Yes it leans masculine, but I can see many women pulling it off, a nice break from the usual gourmands and florals. This is that perfect mix of intrigue and strength, a wonderful perfume.

Love this. CDG tends to make creative but weak perfumes but this lasts long enough for me. Sillage isn't extraordinary but it doesn't matter because I love this for myself. I can spray a few times on myself in the morning and can catch waftes by the end of the night in the shower. On my skin it has a beautiful incense note in addition to the pepper. After the onset it develops this beautiful "sweetness" that goes well with the dryness of the pepper. I love fragrances that smell like they have "dual" smells. I don't know how to describe it but this just really hits the spot and is my signature. Never invasive, just fresh and natural. I would recommened trying it just for how well the interpretation of actual black pepper is.

I absolutely love this fragrance and it was my second purchase from CDG. I can tell you for sure, this smells exactly like rich, warm, fresh cracked black peppercorn. That may be off-putting to some, but this works beautifully and is a very dry, alluring, and dark fragrance but can be worn all day as well. It opens a bit sharp with a full blast of blackpepper and the dry down gives way to dry cracked pepper, patchouli, wood, rounded with the sweetness of tonka bean. I don't get the Oud note in this, but I am sure it's there somewhere. For me, this is a remarkable fragrance and I really love it. If you like dry spice, dry woods, rounded with subtle warm sweetness, then you will love this fragrance. 10/10

Perfume taste is truly personal ... For me this scent is just unbelievable !!! ... true to its name it does smell of pepper. It has a smokey, sweet, spicy, peppery smell which is addictive and seductive... defintely a night perfume ... probably for formal occasions. Average longevity and sillage for me but bear in mind I have only wore it in the winter (bought it in Dec 2017) Expensive but worth it as very few people would have smelt it. I am reviewing an April 2016 batch i've purchased yesterday so I'm not sure how this could affect it's longevity but here's the review: The packaging is black & white metaphorically protraying Salt & Pepper, smart touch. The initial blast is pure ground black pepper which is mind blowing in how did they recreate the smell of natural pepper. 2 hours later is when this baby really starts to shine, it projects reasonably and especially when you're walking down the street you'd get the most beautiful and prettiest sillage in all perfumes. Scent: 10/10 creative. Sillage: moderate Staying Power: it would stay 12 hours on your skin but actual power is 6-8 hours. Nice blind buy.

This is actually one of my favorite scents but not on its own. Don’t get me wrong, I love it on its own, it really is its namesake, black pepper. I love the smell of pepper and bought this after smelling rag and bone oddity and wanting more of a pepper note. To me, pairing this with something is where it shines. I use this fragrance to cut gourmand or citrus heavy frags to give complexity and depth. The way it works in cohesion with gentle fluidity gold, Italica, and Oceana is a masterpiece. I’ve tried it with quite a few fragrances paired together and it really makes a standout last longer and more intriguing.

I have a small amount of this and so I use my sample sparingly. But whenever I come back to this... oh my god it’s so good. It’s spicey in the way that black pepper is... tickles your nose a bit. But it’s so smooth and slightly smoky. It’s warm and comforting and yet fresh and light. I love this so much. Definitely full bottle worthy for me. Yes it leans a bit more masculine but as a woman I’d totally wear this. It’s so cool and unique but very likable. It is true what a previous review said - this and Avignon are siblings. Hard to know which I prefer. Would love both.

It isn’t just a blackpepper scent its hard to explain, it is pepper but without its spicy top notes, it's watery somewhat petrichor like, it's uplifting and it’s also unlike anything else I think I’ve ever smelled. If you want actual photo-realistic blackpepper this isn’t the one, L’Occitane L’Occitan and Amouage Honour Man are the way to go, this is something else something more ethereal. Its longevity isn’t its strong suit but regardless it takes an instant spot in the “love” category for me. This, Man 2 and the Incense line are awesome, CdG is a really great house.

Blackpepper falls within that range of dark and intriguing fragrances that both draw my attention and motivate me to use for its tremendous personality. Of minimal and avant-garde conception, its evolution is almost linear and according to drought it transmits more and more heat. It feels like a tremendous burst of black pepper softened and warmed by the Tonka. The woods of dry nuances are transformed into the ashes of this nuclear explosion and patchouli contributes the character as if it were a black hole that catches you in addiction. Very good mix. Has similarities to CdG’s Black and even Wonderoud, there’s a certain muskiness they all share. I have cracked and used black pepper for 20 years and I don’t agree with everyone else that this smells exactly like black pepper. It’s more like an interpretation of the idea of black pepper by breaking down its facets and reconstructing it with other materials. Other than that, I do very much enjoy this one and find it sexy in a way also. Projection might not be ideal, but it lasts for a while especially on clothes.

while i was crushing black peppers the other day, there comes a whiff of blackpepper fragrance to mind! it is incredible how true to its name this perfume really is. there is something refreshing and herbaceous about it which makes it incredibly easy to wear. while cdg 2 is really hard to pull off - i wear it only when temperature drops to below 10c, blackpepper is definitely what could be described as everyday cdg. it is straightforward, simple, what-you-see-is-what-you-get perfume. love it.

This fragrance for me is a marvellous and surprising discovery of the entire fall season; it is unconventional. Traditionally, the scents on the theme of pepper are based on cedar or incense; however, here I smell a base of patchouli, a huge patchouli I must say. The amount of patchouli is higher than pepper and I wouldn't be surprised if this fragrance would be named Blackpatchouli. It seems they used the record concentration of the Akigalawood in Blackpepper.

Are you looking for PEPPER; front, center, and throughout? Then stop; you found it here. That's what I wanted when I was testing others (Bang, L'Occitan, F Black), and finally landed on the mack daddy: CdG Blackpepper. Wore it yesterday and received two compliments. I only wish longevity and sillage were better, but overlooking those are easy when your fragrance smells like this; just carry around a decant to re-energize.

I’m always on the hunt for unique but not too weird scents since everything becomes very sweet on my skin. I really don’t think it’s as masculine as most of the reviews stated here. For me this is a perfect everyday perfume in autumn and winter. In the evening I prefer something a bit sexier but I don’t mind if I forget to change. The pepper is very clearly present from the first spray to the dry down.

Smooth, sensual and comforting. It does have quite a strong and realistic black pepper note, but tonka and musk temper the its spiciness without compromising its integrity. I love this on my boyfriend and it would be really nice on women too. Fairly unisex while still maintaining strong character. Blackpepper is addictive to me and every time I smell it I want another sniff!! And another and another

This is not a fresh spicy at all. It's a Black Pepper spicy with a very nice dry down from the Oud, Akigalawood,Cedar and Patchouli. I do not pick up any Musk or Tonka Bean. This is more spicy than Montale Full Incense. And that's bold by itself. Black Pepper reminds me of a more bold and stronger version of CDG Incense Avignon. Both are excellent. This is definitely very masculine.

Such a great fragrance! A true genuine black pepper smell with woodsy nuances. Albeit, it is thick and doesn’t project much, more so, it has a bit of a plasticky nuance, may be from the patchouli. A better job could have been put into the blending process. As of longevity and projection, Got like 7-8 hours on skin, 12+ hours on clothes. Sillage is moderate at best.

Pretty much a pepper bomb top to bottom, probably done so with a clever selection of musks. It eventually tames itself from its searing freshly ground opening, morphing into a peppery sandlewood/cedar/agarwood base with the slightest hint of tonka. Really nice and extremely wearable and versatile imo. Unfortunately like most CGD, performance is below average

Ugh I just absolutely adore this. One of those rare fragrances where on first sniff I immediately think - this is so me; this smells like how I imagine myself. (also in this category: the noir, tabac 28, cdg avignon, coffee break) and i know i always say this but i'd love to smell this on a man (ideally via an intimate sniff of the neck of a man i love...!)

This is a smoky, peppery version of Molton Brown Labdanum Dusk. They smell about 90% the same. This is also a lot heavier and darker, to my nose, than what is described. I dont get fresh or light, at all; more of a darker version of the "Soft-Masculine", TF Oud Wood vibe - - but in a spicy woody way. Not bad, but not a safe blind buy either.

initially it’s a bit harsh but I’m a pepper lover so it’s fine. Once it calms is where the marvel is hidden - it becomes such an amazing woody beauty. I’m really in love with this one. It’s one of my signatures and am often asked what I’m wearing. I’m a female and it leans masculine but a woman can easily rock this one.

Striking similarities between this and Montale Greyland. I have both and I have to say that Greyland feels like it has more pepper than this one does. I believe it's the pepper-cedar-musk combo that provides the common feel between the two. Smells kimd of sexy imo, but Greyland is much better in every way.

the pepper note, yes this is aggressively unisex in the sexless way that an airport terminal modeled in the 21st century or an ikea or a dress shirt from H&M may be -- there's a recirculated air smell which undergirds the pepper as it drys it offers similar types of comfort

What an amazing sweet woody and peppery fragrance! There is a lot going on here: a smell of wooden hut and old dry cracked wood, as well as precious and refined smooth wood. These woods are sprinkled with most amazing black pepper. A very multi nuanced perfume.

Exceptional perfume! The peppery notes are among the most beautiful ever perceived by my nose! I also feel the pine and I put my hands on the fire that the pine is present! In winter it makes it not good but VERY GOOD! EXTRAORDINARY FRAGRANCE!

Warm crisp peppercorn, freshly cracked and spread on a plank of cedar. Performance is fine - continues to last as a skin scent after nightfall, and remains detectable on fabric for days. I can't do it justice in words. Absolute masterpiece!

This is a beautiful everyday fragrance you don’t have to think about too much before applying. I find myself craving to wear this before leaving the house. Something cool, and can easily be a signature scent. It’s different and powerful.

A very nice peppery fragrance with some nicely blended resins and spices. Very elegant, very wearable. The drydown is similar to that of Montale Greyland, just a bit sweeter and more refined. Performance is about average.

This feels like a clean-shaven inherently stylish young man who treats his sports car as his spirit animal who does, in fact, care deeply about articulacy, virtue and proper grammar. it's absolutely scrumptious!

Initial spray is true to the name. After 10 to 15 minutes i start to smell unlit incense sticks like those at the smokeshop, reminds me a bit of loewe 7 anonymo. Close to skin but very sexy evening scent.

My signature scent. Smells literally like black pepper. Lots of compliments from people around and in general smells just god damn good. Projection is lacklustre and performance is around 1-2 hours...

An old cedar wood chest filled with smoked black pepper. A contender for my favorite from the discovery set together with Cdg2 man. Where that goes more earthy this goes more warm spicy.

I just bought a sample of this and I wish I were exaggerating when I say that it gave me full body chills the first time I smelled it. A very sharp cool spicy fragrance. Nut.

Spicy, photorealistic pepper with a masculine, creamy powdery dry down. I get a lot of similarity to CDG Black on the dry down, but much less intense. Great scent.

smelled it on paper and hated it but on my skin it smells much more warm, strong sweet oud smell, spicy, love it, want it, low performance on me sadly :(

Beautiful and then 20 minutes later it dries down close to the skin, pity... after the much-loved Black, I had hoped that CDG would create a Black Beast.
