Comme des Garcons Series 6 Synthetic: Soda

It has been my top one of citric fragances, and still. I'm very dissapointed that this serie, the synthetic has been discontinnued. There's, in my opinion, the best one of the Comme des garçons synthetic range. Soda is quite linear, uplifting, refreshing, electric, effervescent, slightly aquatic. Smells just limonade with clean far away flower notes and vinylic notes on the background. It's beyond synthetic, for sure, but the quality of the ingredients is so high, that I found it the most natural of the synthetic I own and know. The fragrance is based in lime accord. It starts as it finish, zesty and refreshing. You can detect the aldehydes, and the lily of the valley, a fresh version here, nice and captivating. The vinylic note starts to blossom after 30 mt application. This note just has a nostalgic impact on me, as reminds me of my childhood, when I was a child, and I used to play in the pool with those plastic lilos on the surface of the water. Well that is waht smell like, clean wet vinyl. Citral and pimenal are molecules that represent acid citric and pimento. Lilial is a molecule that represent lily of the valley but softer, and has a electric twist. Iso eugenol smell fake flowery and the galaxolide is a well known representation of sot musk scent... Bla, bla, bla... Whatever!. The final: jut a heaven perfume. The sillage is monster, specially being a citric fragrance, as the projection too. It's one of the favs of the crowd. Ive been stop several times on the street for people asking me what I was wearing, and the current impression of "I smelled that but I can't get what is It". The formal memory of this synthetic series : A constant intriguing Deja-vú. Fab!.

★★★★★ The synthetic series is a remarkable collection of urban contemporary olfactory art. Soda is the only one I hadn't tried until recently, a surprise left for last. Soda opens up with citric effervescence, providing a powerful blast of synthetic freshness. There's an underlying sweetness that gives the impression of Sprite. This sweetness is crucial because without it Soda would be a harsh bitter and unpleasant result. Pleasant is not the only thing Soda evokes to me, it's also nostalgic in a 90s manner while maintaining a uniqueness in the citrus fragrance category. This formula is original, pleasantly synthetic and relevant to this day since nostalgia is an essential ingredient in today's culture (fashion, film, etc) I consider it to be a more playful and higher quality version of Hilfiger Athletics, a great citrus from the 90s. They only smell similar in spirit though, as Soda does not evoke American sportiness, but Japanese pop culture instead.

Oh this is like opening a can of fizzy drink, right down to a sense of the metalic. It’s gorgeous on first application then interestingly enough it’s evocative (but so much nicer) than the effect of the Acne/Malle collab. Those aldehydes are so busy I almost get a soapy steam along with the fizz. Citrus but not simply peel or zest. It dries down pretty quick to a refreshing wear. Daytime, summer for sure. Nobody could be offended as it does not project wildly and is clean and fresh but not cliched. Yes it’s a 90’s vibe but also brilliantly abstract. If the price point is achievable I’d risk a blind buy if you are broad minded, love a synthetic. Very clever, very fun.

I love this! Was definitely the relaunch I was most excited about from the Olfactive Library, and it didn't disappoint. If you're a fan of Bond No 9 Coney Island you may find something familiar here, but less obtrusive. Where Coney Island is a very strong, sharp lime scent with an almost heady bitter edge, Soda is is a bit sweeter, fruitier and crisper, without any hint of bitterness. Soda also sticks more closely to your skin, making it less of a...conversation piece as Coney Island. It's tangy citrus, effervescent, and every bit as synthetic smelling as you'd expect. It's also a whole lot of fun.

Fizzy ginger, some ginger and more ginger. Did I order sprayable ginger juice by mistake? :D At least that was my impression upon spraying. Then dishwasher detergent stepped in. Sounds odd but I actually liked it. Edgy and refreshing. Sadly after a while it took a flowery turn and got a bit creamy. Not really what I wanted from Soda, but still might get a bottle someday who knows... :) It's also a shame about the newer bottles. The old ones looked really cool.

playful and lovely. i enjoy the journey from first application to final dry-down. it's a scent that changes as you wear it. it's sprite-like (as in Sprite the soda and sprite the magical being) and young. i think anyone can wear it, and i would consider it to be unisex, but there is definitely something girlish about it! i've seen reviewers compare it to ramune, and i think that's an apt description.

For me it smells like the air after the thunder and rain. I first encountered this smell when I was a teenager and I think it was my first purchase of a perfume, which probably formed my taste. I love clean, soapy, lemony, ozonic smells and this one is one of the finest examples. Should've bought it...

Fun, strong, long lasting, sweet, very refreshing. It smells like a studio of a painter, inspires creation. Another option if you are into soda like fragrances is L'eau des Hesperides by Diptyque which is very Fanta-like.

On me, the fragrance initially has the intensity of freshly sliced ginger and freezing air that weans over time to a softer notes of lemon/lime and lily. CDC Soda reminds me to be positive and light on my feet.

Energizing and fun. This fragrance captures that effervescence of opening a can of ginger ale or ginger beer. Great for a little mood boost but also fun to layer with for those who like to mix and match.

Positively abrasive lemon FIZZ I do feel like the Soda part also means the soda thats used for cleaning, hence abrasive. Very wearable, intensely clean scent. Not too sharp.

This smells exactly like Vanish Oxi action stain remover powder, the one in the pink container. And I love that.

I’m slightly confused why this one would be called “soda” - as it doesn’t really contain much of a soda quality. My first impression of this, much like the gentleman below, was pledge furniture cleaner. It definitely has a lemon/aldehayic quality that is undeniable. After I thought about it for a moment - and re-sniffed several times, I feel like I understand. This isn’t coca-cola soda. This is like club soda with a lemon. The aldehydes give the effervescent qualities that are emitted from a fizzy, freshly poured club soda. The lemon gives the freshness you’d associate with a refreshing, clear gin and tonic. Once the aldehydes calm down, it’s actually a really nice lemony-sweet scent. Just don’t go into it expecting a realistic interpretation of soda. Nice, but not special. 6/10

In the words of Monty Python... Now for something completely different.. CdG gives us Soda.. I am not really sure how to describe this scent. It is more of an experience, or a feeling, than a scent to me. Think... the burst of carbonation as you open a bottle of Sprite soda.. or maybe a glass of soda water with a twist of lemon and lime in it. I give CdG an A+ for effort. It captures that essence perfectly. But I am not sure where I would wear this one. Hmmmmm... I do live in Atlanta, so maybe the World of Coca Cola museum? This is a great novelty fragrance, very well made, but not one I see getting worn a lot, unless you work in the World of Coca Cola museum.

Genuinely has a refreshing lemon soda water vibe to it, quite impressive. I put this on during a very hot day and it was the perfect scent to wear as it really brightened what was a hot miserable afternoon. Unlike most citrus scents it really lasts too and cuts through a long day of sweaty heat. Not my favorite of CdG I prefer their wood and incense focused frags on the whole but this is very nice and I can see myself pulling for it as an antidote to searing heat quite often.

It smells like photorealistic candied ginger, or I guess ginger ale, in my opinion, so I was shocked ginger wasn't even a note. This is refreshing and comforting for a morning scent when you need to calm yourself down or get some work done, but doesn't have much of the fizzy nostalgia I would want from a soda scent. I don't get much citrus at all. The rum honestly makes it lean mature for me, I don't get the childish associations from it, c'est la vie.

Imagine putting your nose straight on a freshly cut ginger root. That's exactly how it opens for me. Very fizzy in the beginning, then gets more soda - like with the flowery notes coming through. Very interesting fragrance, too bad it doesn't last long. And to be honest, I dont smell the rum in it.

this is so cool it’s a photorealistic bubbly ginger lemon lime soda (but more of like a lightly flavored soda water than a sugary one) mixed with a touch of cleaning product but in a way that’s comforting and nostalgic. i wore a sample of this to see a movie and it was perfect

Huuuuge glass of fizzy Sprite on steroids, with wonderfully delicious resinous undertones of rum or whatever. Basically, could easily be used as a relaxed toilet fresher after someone has taken a massive dump. And for that, I think I love it even more.

Smells like I just popped open a can of 7up. The metallic-citrus effect is lovely. Beautiful lighthearted spritzer reminiscent of growing up.

I think I need to try this in a vaporizer because I tried a sample with a dropper and the smell didn't really last at all. If you get a sample from luckyscent or similar I'd be curious to know if it's just bad technique or what. I did enjoy the scent, but despite putting on almost a full ml I totally lost it by the end of the night from my neck and wrists. Definitely pleasant and interesting, though!

This will take some time to get comfortable with. For now it just smells like all kinds of cheap yellow synthetic citrus floor cleaners.. Sharp soapy and none of the Sprite/7Up note I had heard of and was so hoping for.. I agree with batabidd that the sillage is monster. I`m hoping to negotiate a truce with this one, some day.. For now I`ll stick with Pacifica Malibu Lemon Blossom, another one that was difficult for me in the beginning, but which came somewhat closer to what I had expected from this one. Though without the spritzy note of Soda. I must add that I have yet to find any one citrusy scent that goes well with my chemistry.

Now that I'm learning that this series has been discontinued, I'm wondering if the sample I smelled hadn't turned by the time I got to it. I found this scent. . . revolting. Sharp, abrasive, nostril-flaringly bad. . . To me, it smells like that first burst of carbonation from a soda can - so in that way, it's a total non-smell, just a feeling, and for me, not a terribly good one at that. . .

I was hoping for a bright cola or sweetened sprite, but I get a dry club soda sort of smell that's almost astringent-like in it's opening and dry down. It smells so muddled and brash and I don't have too many scrubbers, but this was just a bit obnoxious.

A personal favorite since this came out in 2004 - I happened to work in Paris at the time and it must have been March or February - stumbled into Comme's back door tiny perfume store behind Place Vendôme one morning to discover the Series 6 releases - back then I picked Soda as a first one and when it finally disappeared some years ago, I thought that this one would be gone. When it was released, in the original 75 ml bottle, there were not so much advert narratives coming with the fragrance as now with the reissue - I find the soft drink association somewhat misleading, Soda for me is pure technical kitchen detergent distilled to perfection. A synthetic industrial constellation of aldehydes and plenty of citral derivates, very particular. For the years this was not in production, I've been searching for something to replace it but never got there - maybe Dior's strange Eau Sauvage Cologne pointing in this direction, yet much more mainstream, A Lab on Fire's Almost transparent blue, to some extent, but really nothing overlaps entirely with Soda. And the excellent news is, testing my 75 ml bottle with the reissue, it's been perfectly reconstructed, I cannot perceive differences - keeping the larger throughput of the old vaporiser system of the 75ml bottles in mind - which must put out 3 - 4 times of the current spray mechanism. Now please relaunch Dry Clean and Skai!

Among the countless reasons why I love Comme Des Garcons (both for their fragrances and their clothes), is that they've been able during the years to bring a strong dose of (smart) irony to two of the most "serious" an "pompous" sectors of the fashion industry. Where other brands focused on stereotyped luxury and made-up heritage, CDG has based most of their innovative power on irony and a funny mash-up bewteen the japanese comics culture, avant-garde and slight fetishist aspects (see many of their military-inspired collections of clothes). If you're fine with their "vision" and, sometimes, you feel like wearing a fragrance just for fun, Soda it's just up your alley. Wha it smells like? Ginger and citruses galore with a remarkable effervescent aspect given by the aldehydes. A true to life rendition of the soda with the usual slight pvc twist of most of the fragrances in their Synthetic Series. Not a wower, nothing particularly weird, revolutionary or groundbreaking...just plain fun. Rating: 7/10

Love this fragrance. Admittedly, it kind of reminded me of lemon Pledge furniture spray at first, though. I think it's really best used with a light hand. It's a really clean, cold, aldehydic, citrus scent. Not a sweet scent at all, to me. It opens with a sharp, almost painful aspect reminiscent of strong carbonation being exposed to oxygen, which likewise settles quickly into a fizz that dies down gradually. The soapy fresh smell and the lemon/lime scent stick to my skin and clothes like glue for hours, thankfully. I was worried after reading other reviews that it would fade quickly, but that hasn't been my experience at all. I find myself repeatedly pulling my wrist to my face for energetic little whiffs. Perfect for summer. Simple, clean, different, unisex, fresh2death. A really unique and long lasting citrus, soapy yet only very faintly floral. Can't wait to layer this, I think a touch of musk or vetiver would make it truly amazing.

Cheeky perfume version of bubble blowing liquid! They captured the bubble aspect of the soda at least. This bursts out with quite an ozonic blast, a very detergent-like aroma. Smells to me exactly like a perfume version of the soapy liquid used to blow bubbles in their bright plastic jars with hoops inside! There's a plastic component that amplifies the scent, a thick syrupy glycerin that's pleasant and clean. The scent also reminds me of a kid's bubble bath formula that I used when I was very young. Fun, commercially popular 'scent-memory' aroma! Sillage and longevity both strong.

A fizzy lemon soda scent that dries down to powdery florals. This is a 7-Up, Sprite soda; not a coke smell. Very sporty, very fresh. More than anything however, this fragrance makes me nostalgic for the late 90s and early 2000's. I can't help but reflect on the aesthetics and fashion of that time. This fragrance is within the same vein of the popular minimalist fragrances that were coming out then, just of a higher quality. The scent itself smells like a combination between Calvin Klein's Eternity for Men and Issey Miyake L'eau D'issey.

This was one of the first samples I bought when first getting into fragrance, and after revisiting it while sorting through some samples, I think Synthetic: Soda is a great sample to purchase if you want to learn what aldehydes smell like. This is all sparkle and citrus and a very photorealistic Sprite or 7Up scent. Not particularly complex and a little simplistic for my taste now but it definitely lives up to it's name.

This is a-dorable! I was expecting a cola-type scent but this opens like you just cracked open a can of '7up' soda. The sparkles soon subside into more of a '7up' lip balm scent. Both smells are a delight, and are instant scent memories. Of course it doesn't last, (sigh), but I need to have this simply as an instant mood lifter :) Cheery and refreshing.

I love this one! A photorealistic take on a freshly opened can of lemon lime soda, metal can & all. Fresh & fizzy, bittersweet & slightly metallic. It's actually far less sweet than I had anticipated, Imo this is closer to a sparkling water like lacroix than a sweeter soda like sprite. Stays pretty linear & sits close to the skin after around an hour

Opening: Fairy Liquid (Lemon version). The beauty of this fragrance is to spray on your shirt and you will get continuous wafts of 7up/lemonade throughout the day, very uplifting. This is a far better and more interesting option than the likes of Dior Homme Cologne etc.

Como cuando you tell your Abuelita that you are sick and she rubs Vicks on you and makes you chug a room temperature 7up and you magically feel better. This smells like those two items. Nostalgic but I don't want to smell like this. Thanks

Very strong aldehydes, lemon peel, and floral soap. Quite harsh, and not like a soda I'd drink (though a bit like the lemon-flavored mouth-wipes they give you when for medical reasons, you can't drink liquids). Not a fan.

I agree with the reviewer who called this harsh. I couldn't get this one off fast enough. It really is like furniture cleaner and the drydown is not any better. Sorry but Yech.

Instantly reminded me of the smell of a bubble bath or the soap bubble tubes that children play with. Couldn't shake the association and did not end up wearing.
