Gold

A gorgeous fragrance that's sweet and light, but has slight incense undertones that give it depth. When I first smelled this I thought it was simple, sweet, maybe even boring. It's sexy in a comfortable way, a somewhat innocent way. I wondered if I could even smell it any more, beyond that almost generic light sweetness. Just when I had nearly given up on it, I was surprised by it again -- walking out into the cool spring breeze, I could suddenly smell it again, alluring, fascinating and with a depth that I hadn't picked up yet. I really like Commodity fragrances, they don't seem to overcomplicate things but use just enough notes to achieve a really intriguing effect. I also like how, in some ways, Gold is really stable over quite a few hours of wear -- after the initial rush of sweetness dies down quite quickly, it's remarkably consistent as a sort of light and airy slightly burnt sugar with undertones of vanilla and benzoin. Five or six hours later, I'm still picking up on the same notes. Yet I find my perception of them changes quite a lot depending on the environment around me. The scent comes alive outdoors, and settles comfortably indoors.

I randomly picked this as one of my free samples via Sephora, && the randomness payed off, I was immediately captivated by this sultry vanilla lush scent && Being a lover of vanilla based scents I was won over by this. Can't say I'd splurge for a large bottle but thankfully it comes in a more pocket friendly size, which honestly is prob all I'd like, I can see this as being a go to night on the town scent, sexy, playful && inviting. I recommend if you enjoy a nice soft not so in your face vanilla that's just enough to obtain a swoon, can't wait to test out it's magic. ;D FYI: this Gold isn't labeled for just women, on Sephora's site it is classified to be adored by both women && men. 'Gold' is part of Commodity’s White Collection, which includes scents that are light, airy, and easy. The Black Collection is more complex, intense, and moody. Each fragrance is designed to be layered together with any other to create bespoke scents tailored to each individual taste.

Starts off in an underwhelming way, soft vanilla with a certain sharpness... reading the actual notes I'm guessing this is the camphor. But give it a few minutes and it develops into a beautiful deep, warm ambery vanilla. It literally makes me want to cuddle myself! LOL Drydown brings out the sandalwood. So soft and warm and cuddly. The real beauty of Gold is the longevity. You could literally douse yourself in this stuff and not feel like you've oversprayed, so I was prepared for it to fade away in an hour or two, but even a spray or two lasts for hours and hours. This is definitely what I'd consider a skin scent, like the drydown of other louder vanilla frags straight from the start, but there are many times when I just want to smell nice instead of knocking people over with my perfume. I don't think it is possible to use the word cuddle too many times when talking about this scent. I also own and enjoy Secret Genius, but Gold is less sweet and longer lasting.

This is the original formulation. This review is based on a bottle purchased in 2018. Not sure why I never reviewed it before now but here you go. The newer formulations have a completely different scent to them but they are not nearly as beautiful as the original in my opinion. The opening of juniper and bergamot attack my senses as if I were wandering outdoors only to run back inside as they quickly fade. This starts to dry down to a beautiful resinous powdery vanilla that has a slight smokiness to it. This is how it remains on my skin. I love it and will enjoy it until the last tiny drop. Final thoughts on performance: At 6 sprays this will last on my skin a good 7 or 8 hours. It stays around arms length until the last hour or two and then you would have to hug me to smell it. Overall a very gorgeous cozy vanilla fragrance perfect for cooler weather.

Gypsy Water who?? Calling all gourmand lovers! This is not your basic b**** vanilla. It smells incredibly warm, rich, complex & luxurious and lasts all day. This was discontinued a couple years ago but I'm happy to see that it's back. I imagine this is what celebrities & models smell like. Too heavy to wear to work, I only wear this when I go out at night. This is my go-to when I want to make a good first impression since I feel like it's impossible not to like. Side note: yesterday I tested a sample of Byredo's Gypsy Water & was shocked - I thought I accidentally sprayed Gold on myself. It smells like a MUCH weaker & more woody version.. like if you removed the warm & cozy vibe that Gold has, add some patchouli, watered it down then left it in the sun for a bit. People who wear Gypsy Water must not know that this exists.

I want to drink this. I finally got a full bottle and it's one of the most comforting, cozy scents I've ever worn. It's not a heavy, boozy vanilla at all, which makes it more versatile for different weather and seasons. Its longevity is pretty good, not insane or anything and it's projection is about the same. Though important to note that there's the different Scent Spaces you can get. I have the regular Expressive version. Not entirely sure on the difference in notes between the three of them. Anyway, this regular version is absolutely lovely! On my skin it's an ambery marshmallow scent, but not sickly sweet. It's a bit airy with a touch of woodiness. If you love vanilla, gourmand, cozy scents then you should seriously consider this for your collection.

I'm curious to try the Expression and Plus versions, but for me, the personal version is just perfection and everything I want in a fragrance. Commodity Gold has some heavy-hitting notes, but the addition of the iso e super gives this fragrance a lightness that is magical. I wear fragrances for me and this is so enjoyable—it's a perfectly balanced composition of masculine and feminine notes that swirl around me. Not sure others can smell it, but I certainly do, and my nose never gets fatigued by this. It really is perfect in its execution and simplicity for those of us who like minimal but still interesting fragrances. Commodity Gold personal is FB and signature-worthy. I will be purchasing this once I use up my decant.

I think some people don't realize the white bottle is the original formulation of Gold. The new Gold ("expressive ", with no "+" or "-" sign) is in a black bottle and listed on this site as well. According to the new owner the original formulations were kept EXCEPT in cases of regulation changes which may have caused some differences. I have the new version and I had the original, and they're definitely not 100% the same. They're very close, but it's not the Gold I remember and so I'm a little bummed about it. That being said it's still a beautiful perfume and I think a safe blind by for people who like amber and a little spice.

This has been my go to for a solid three years now. I regularly get texts from my friends saying they smell me around the library and they love it! It is classy and beautiful yet unique enough that not many people I know wear it! When I ran out of my bottle, I considered trying a new go to, but my boyfriend at the time was so upset that I would not smell like it anymore that he immediately bought me the bottle!! I'm a 20 year old and this makes me feel elegant in a way that isn't too mature! I will always have a some on hand!

I adore this scent. It is delicious and intoxicating. I am a gourmand lover and it is sweet (heavy on the vanilla) but there is more to it than that. The name does it justice because it is more regal, mature, and refined than opposed to just sickly sweet or cloying. This scent, like most other Commodity fragrances, lasts me all throughout the work day and performs strong. It's a good one to layer but at the same time I just love it on its own. Definitely a cool weather fragrance, it's kind of cozy in a way.

This perfume is my signature scent. I consider it more of a fall/winter, cooler weather fragrance, but I wear it in spring and summer as well because I love it so much. On me, it smells like the coziest, sweet musky vanilla (my favorite type of scent) but isn’t cloying or overly sweet like bakery vanilla scents. It lingers on sweaters and hair and skin and is one of the perfumes I am complimented on the most! I always have a backup bottle.

This is one of my daughter's signature scents that she's worn for years. It's an absolutely beautiful vanilla/amber fragrance that is just sweet enough without ever being cloying. I would imagine it's the perfect balance of the juniper and vetiver that keeps the vanilla slightly fresh and dry. This is one of the few vanilla scents that I think even the non gourmand lovers like me would really enjoy.

The scent of this is really gorgeous. It’s yummy but in a very non offensive way & I do find it to be unisex, which I love. The dry down is true vanilla sandalwood on me. I got this in my scent bird subscription, & even though I love it, I will not be buying a full bottle because the longevity & throw of this scent is truly terrible. You’ll need to reapply 2-4 times a day.

Very glad I tried this as a random sample, because the notes would never have prompted me to try this on my own. But honestly, one of my top 5 fragrances, very easily. More sweet than not, but I wouldn't call it a gourmand. No particular notes stand out to me, which for me is a good thing because I like my scents to be very blended.

Gold to me is an unisex-scent in a good way. No heavy, sharp notes. I don't get any sweet notes neither. I get the amber, tonka, sandalwood & vanilla-mix on my skin. I like it alot. I can see both men and women wearing Gold. One spray goes along way, less is more, so to speak. If you spray too much it will be thick and awful.

A lovely scent! Gold is warm, comforting and perfect to wear on a cold winter day/night. It's pretty chill and not too "perfumey". I get a lot of vanilla, but not in a sweet, cupcake frosting type of way. It's more of a spicy, boozy, sophisticated vanilla. Love it!

Olfactory darling you are so right!!! My first thought was this smells like lake by/RosieJane which I LOVE, gold (black bottle) is a bit sweeter and more vanillic while Lake has a woodier citrusy dry down but they definitely give the same vibe!

I got this as a fragrance in my Ipsy bag and OH MY GOSH I smell delicious. I layered it over Tocca Florence and it’s such a great combination. Can’t wait for the perfume to come back so I can buy a full sized version instead of a sample!

Every time I wear this I delight in how beautiful it is. I adore it. Gold is the perfect name for this fragrance, I get that image when I smell it. It's somewhat similar to Tocca Colette, I can't decide which one I like best.

This is great for layering with other Commodity scents, like Mimosa or Whiskey. I also enjoy it as a warm, pleasant vanilla on its own. While I can see why others say it's one-note, I find it sophisticated and not too sweet.

This perfumes smells so delicious and soft. I can smell the amber and vanilla mix. I got this as a sample in my Ipsy and I’m so happy. Will sure buy a full size bottle in the future. Perfect for fall and winter weather.

TOP quality right here! This is a true vanilla fragrance. No candy sugar sweet childish scent. It's light fresh absolutely no chemical smell whatsoever. This is by far the cleanest most non offensive fragrance line.

Words cannot express how much I LOVE this perfume! It's an amazing blend of warm vanilla with a hint of spice and musk for a truly sexy fragrance! One of my go to fall/winter fragrances, especially for a night out!

OOoh this is good. I love Lake by Rosie Jane...but RJ's is lacking oomph and lasting power. This smells so similar but even better, and it makes up for what RJ's lacks. Yippee!

Amazing grown up, unisex vanilla! It is a little smoky and definitely sexy. Longevity, projection and sillage are moderate to high. It is also unique and addictive.

Gold, that's what I smell, a beautiful dragon sitting on it's pile of gold. If you love vanilla/amber scents you cannot go wrong with this perfume. I got a sample of it in my ipsy bag and I'm so lucky to fall upon this scent, it marks every checkbox on my list; great notes, everyday/season wear, not sticky, or too overwhelming. There's three different Gold scents from commodity, the one I got was Gold: Expressive, I have not tried the others but I can imagine they will smell great as well. Now let's talk about price... This is about $128 for 100ML on their website, I think that's a tad expensive for a vanilla/amber fragrance that doesn't last more than 4 hours, I still have my sample and it's been well over two years, so that can tell you I don't grab it that much, and I don't even have a large collection. When I run out I'm just going to buy the $28 10ml version from their website or find a good deal on eBay. It's a great scent I just think it's a little expensive for the simple notes and longevity/silliage. I really recommend buying the $12 sample set of all the Gold scents from their website(I believe the three versions are different in strength, but also they have slightly different notes), it will last you a good while and you can experience 3 different versions of gold. They also have a quiz you can take and a discovery kit with all the scents for $24, that's a great deal in my opinion, and the samples are a good amount.

This is what I wanted Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon to be. Rich, dense, yet soft vanilla-benzoin-amber that hugs close, like a heavy, warm cashmere scarf. Strangely, one of my first fleeting thoughts upon spraying was that it was vaguely reminiscent of Dior Hypnotic Poison, which I haven't smelled in years (probably since before reformulation) and with which Gold only has three listed notes in common. I still can't figure out what might have triggered the olfactory connection. Of the top notes, only the camphor comes through on my skin. The amber, vanilla, tonka, and benzoin that characterize the scent are evident from the beginning. White musk becomes present after maybe an hour and disappears after a few more. I don't detect as much sandalwood in this, and it disappears along with the musk, but the aforementioned amber-benzoin-vanilla-tonka hangs on for almost nine hours before fading away. Gold is a lovely, inoffensive, and comforting scent for fall and winter.

This is not the type of fragrance I generally go for based off of the notes. I'm not a fan of amber or vetiver, and sandalwood is a note I generally dislike in all forms. Yet none of these notes actually makes themselves well known. The one that I can distinctly smell is the amber, and it gives the scent a substantially warm quality. This scent is exceedingly pleasant. It's very musky, but a very clean musk. It smells like smooth clean musk over a warm cozy bed of vanilla milk. Comforting. A skin scent. I'd call it very non-offensive, easy to wear for any occasion without worrying about anyone disliking it. The notes meld well with one another and it's very nicely blended. Pretty modest, and a good layering scent. Bought a travel spray of it because I enjoy it so much.

It is difficult to review this fragrance because I can barely smell it at all . enough for me to not be able to tell you what notes I sense. I ordered a vial of the scent off eBay for around $5 and I am afraid to spray the entire file just to provide an adequate review . Maybe this is not for me . Obviously it sounds nice and apparently you are supposed to layer this with their other fragrances to create your own unique scent . a clever idea; however, I tend to do this anyway with my collection of perfume . You won't believe that you can create with some private blends. there are so many great fragrances out there I'm going to have to say this one is a pass until they reformulated their perfume and make them much stronger . I hope you do Commodity.

This is a solid vanilla-heavy fragrance, on the deeper end of that note, and one that I've found perfect for layering. But it's nothing more. I've found many of Commodity's white line to be somewhat lacking as standalone scents, and Gold is chief among them. As a layering fragrance, I love that it's not a sweet dessert vanilla; the benzoin and amber keep it rich and sultry and just slightly unctuous. I do get a hint of camphor, which adds a balancing coolness. But on its own, there's nothing here that one can't find elsewhere. Given the exorbitant prices it fetches now that Commodity has folded, I'd look elsewhere rather than spend an extraordinary amount for a quite ordinary, if well-made, scent.

I ordered a purse size spray from Sephora that arrived today. My first impression is a very soft and somewhat musky scent. I like it, but I usually like to be able to smell myself without putting nose to wrist. It would be the perfect "my skin but better" perfume, for occasions when you want to wear something and will either be in a group of people you don't want to offend, or when you'll be intimately close where you want to smell sexy in a quiet way. I would be interested in smelling the men's version of Gold to see if it has a little extra oomph. Overall, very nice, you need to like Ambroxan to wear this one. It may become a daily go to for me.

The ultimate amber scent, in my opinion. The main notes to my nose are amber, syrupy vanilla, resin, and camphor (or is the juniper?). I just sprayed it again, and I caught a bit of "clean," which is something I hadn't really gotten before. Interesting ... Maybe the camphor is presenting itself more strongly as I empty my tester? (Which is, granted, several years old.) It's syrupy and thick and sweet while also being dry, as ScentLoverJen mentioned. An entertaining dichotomy. Great longevity and sillage. Feels more fall/winter, night to me. I'd like to pick up a travel size sometime. Not sure I love it enough for a big bottle. Yet...

Powdery cozy vanilla. I wish the bergamot and juniper berries would last longer to give the perfume some more dimension though. On me it smells pretty much the same 10 minutes in and 4 hours in, so lasting power is good, but scent is kind of boring. Sillage is intimate, but that's how it's supposed to be with this one. I must say the dry own is pretty similar to byredo gypsy water, albeit GW has some nice woody and citrusy depth to it, which I prefer, but the vanilla base is sport on.

I get sweet vanilla, tonka bean, sandalwood, pipe tobacco, some benzoin and a tad bit of creamy powder. This isn't too impressive on it's own, but I'm assuming this was meant to be layered. I can't imagine buying this one as a stand-alone, since there are so many others out there that smell the same, but are less expensive. However, as a layering element, I think it would provide a great base for spicy scents, maybe even herbal or something with a bit more depth.

Very gentle, sweet, and matronly... This on its own was almost aroma-therapeutic for me in that I instantly felt softer and calmer walking around with it on all day. Powdery vanilla notes can be off putting to say the least, but this one is executed well. I think those same notes might make it a little trickier to layer, as the brand suggests, but I found it pleasant enough on its own. Lasting power was decent, sillage was pretty close to the skin.

Oh how i wish the sillage was better This is so heavenly to me, i get a very musky vanilla with an aromatic freshness that takes me straight back to thailand. The notes are of very good quality and this has been blended perfectly, there's nothing off-balance. If the sillage was better i would buy a bottle without a second thought. edit: so sinful smells similar with better strength. Its a bit cheap smelling in the beginning but warms up nicely.

If you’re a vanilla lover, this is a damn good jam. It’ll never be my thing (I received Gold as part of a sampler pack), forever reminding me too much of Bath and Body Works products from my formative years. But as far as vanillas go, it’s a good one. Woody undertones that balance the syrupy sweetness a bit. I did an overnight test and could still smell the fragrance on my arm and shirt in the morning.

Consider Gold to be MAC Velvet Teddy's younger, less serious sister: she's sweet, she's flirty rather than sexy, and she sparkles. There's creamy vanilla, sweet powder, a faint woodsiness, and a few extra things which add just a hint of shimmering spice and fizz. The Ambroxan helps keeps it well-rounded and from becoming overly sugary. Really nice daytime fall scent for woodsy sweet gourmand lovers!

I love the smell of this scent, it smells like what the skin of a goddess would smell like. This is technically better suited for fall and winter but it is so soft you could definitely pull it off during spring and maybe even summer. However, I find this to be extremely quiet on my skin and longevity is not great. After two hours of wear I have to press my nose against my skin in order to smell it.

This has lot of smooth powdered vanilla and coumarin out of this. Not too strong, could wear to work. Soft but noticeable, gourmand but not too sweet. A subtle sweetie scent. Perfect for any occasion when you would like a sweet note but don't want to be overwhelming or cloying. The coumarin is very powdery in the dry down especially, almost a makeup powder.

This fragrance is really nice and I would say it’s pretty gourmand, which is the type of fragrance I gravitate to. It’s a beautiful creamy vanilla. That being said, I have no desire to get a full bottle of this fragrance. To me, it’s not super unique. While it is pleasant, it’s not something that makes me want to continue smelling myself.

(Review of a person who does not wear gourmands) Gold is a very innocent milky vanilla scent. Not a rough vanilla powder, rather creamy and soft vanilla pannacotta. Very yammy and imho, suits a younger generation. I can also see it layering with other scents (I haven't tried myself). Yet, longevity is poor, about 3h on me.

Super safe blind buy for vanilla lovers. I sprayed this on myself and it was a skin scent within a couple hours. Not much sillage either. Too expensive to spray what would be necessary to fully enjoy, and i have vanilla body sprays that perform better . I like it though. Would be a nice safe gift.

It's fine. It is definitely not unique, as you may be able to tell from the number of other fragrances it is compared to in the reviews here, but I like it enough that I happily used all of my tiny bottle. It does last much longer than some of the other scents from Commodity.

At first spray this almost smells like eggnog. Rich, creamy vanilla and spices. I can smell the soda-pop sparkle of the sandalwood in here. If you wear this you will smell like a boozy, rich vanilla pudding. I got at least 12 hours out of this. Excellent longevity.

Review of the original composition from before the rebrand. Beautiful and sweet, but longevity is so poor. No projection, and no silage. The camphor and juniper make this an aromatic vanilla. To me it’s a sweeter less performing Eau Duelle and Gentle Fluidity Gold.

This is a beautiful fragrance, and it actually does have a slight metallic scent to it! It's a warm sensual scent that has a great lasting power!! It stays close to your skin and is sweet too! I get around 5 hours from it before I like to reapply:)
