Orris

i bought 3 original storybook bottles from an online seller in the uk. orris is the one i am wearing today. i enjoy "feminine," "masculine," and "unisex." orris seems not so much feminine in the sense of sweet light floral but feminine in the sense of what a "lady" would have worn in days gone by. it is rich and deep. a mahler symphony of flowers. i get the same vibe from my original ubar or sortilege. not that they are all that alike, but that they share completeness of experience: classic perfume, a little powder, precise lipstick, hat, gloves, fur jacket, nylons, fine jewels, 2 times a week salon, luminous nail polish, elegant shoes, etc. the whole package without a jot out of place. i suspect i love it not only because it is luxurious and exotic but also it reminds me of my mother when she was dressed to go out on a date with my father. they would go dining and dancing and nightclubing. and then the joy of joys, when they would arrive home a little early, bringing my brother and me some "new york system wieners" from the all night diner. (smothered in onions, hamburger sauce, celery salt) at that moment, my mother was a cloud of her perfume, her perfume soft and embracing. a beautiful smelling goddess with a handful of hotdogs, what more could a boy want?

This is in my top 3 of the 15 storybook Commodity samples I have tried. Its really yummy but not in a over the top sweet way. The strongest smell is warm spicy ginger, like the crystalized candy kind, or a ginger cookie dough. In the background i get fig and marshmallow. The dry down does not chage much, gingerbread with a bit more milky coriander. I am not a huge fan of gourmands but this one is lovely and spicy. I dont really get much of the ceder, vetivert, bergamot, floral, or patchuli tbh, and the tea element would have to be a sweet black milky tea, not fresh and green at all. ⛤⛤⛤⛤ Edit: got the 10 ml spray from Sephora Au and this is slighly reformulated too! Its not as deep and rich as the storybook sample version.

So glad I stepped into TJ Maxx today !! I picked up this one...BLIND...having no idea what to expect....so I was optimistic. The first spritz I get quasi-orris...then th other notes waft in, and leaves me with a very very nice fragrance. A little sweetness/tartness...and a floral-ish spice vibe sitting underneath....Nice !!! Tea and light cedarwood....the floral/citrus touchs...minimal patchouli..and just enough vanilla. This can be unisex IMHO. This is a very comforting scent...smooth too. Sillage/projection,could be better...but...that's ok. I am enjoying this one !!! EDIT: ............AWESOME !!! The drydown is OMG good !

OMG YES. The lipstick-esque perfume I've been seeking. Orris is a note I'm not that familiar with but I just adore this. It has this amazing sweetness that's not cloying. I just. can't. stop. sniffing. Fresh and warm and spicy at the same time as well. Incredibly sexy. Incredibly feminine. I LOVE. If I had to describe this to someone, it's like the smell of old lipstick + Byredo Bibliotheque + maybe a little of the sweetness from something like Black Opium had a baby. WHO I PICTURE THIS ON: ME.

Soft and lipstick-y and without being too rooty. This is what I wanted orris tattoo to be. I went to the commodity store in nyc today to sample it today without much of an expectation. I casually layered milk over it and walked out. Lo and behold in the next hour or two, it morphed into such an amazing scent that I had to go back and grab it. It softened the smokiness of milk and made the orris pop.

I love powdery lipstick scents. This one has a little green and earthy twist. It’s like a fresh orris scent as opposed to a creamy orris scent. It smells like lipstick mixed with white florals (prominent lily note) and fresh earth (soil). It’s easy to wear, non-offensive, feminine.

I loved the journey, from the opening to the dry down base notes. I feel like this is a great representation or Orris and got me looking into that note more specifically. The opening has the sweetness from the carrot seeds and coriander that make it very interesting for me.

I like this more every time I wear it. Lovely orris perfume with some soft florals and earthiness.

I don't love the first burst of this- simply because my nose is hypersensitive to patchouli and there is overdose of pink pepper but... This is where my negatives with this scent end ! The top dries down really quickly and what you are left with is what I can only describe as a beast mode slightly sweeter and a touch more powdery version of Nivea EDT. I find this to create a very comfortable scent bubble, nothing that will choke anyone out but enough to get compliments and it lasts a long time too. I find the whole experience very comforting and cosy, almost motherly, which is why I really don't gravitate towards wearing it outside -it's just that homely... But that's just me. Also I accidentally layered this with Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess and it actually smells pretty incredible !

Unisex but leans into feminine territory, not too much so that a guy can't wear it but certainly suited more for the ladies. Even so, I quite enjoy wearing it. The scent is quite nice, elegant, strong and gentle at the same time and achieving that is a win to begin with. Orris saves nothing for last, it starts with a powerful iris and dose of pepper that's a little too strong and off putting but it only lasts a couple of mins and after that you're left with some spicy floral notes that take you on a nice journey. I get some sweetness, perhaps on behalf of the vanilla but I wish we got more of it. This is a nice scent by Commodity, it's not a must nor a fragrance that's gonna be in most people's '10 for Life' but neither is a fragrance I regret buying.

Gently sweet and warm lipstick/powdery opening with generous florals and a touch of freshness that for me introduces the top and heart notes all at once, which is straight away quite enjoyable. It’s got a comforting, cosy vibe that’s quite calming. Although this is marketed towards women it’s totally unisex to me, as all fragrances should be. Doesn’t project much but longevity is good. I don’t think it’s going to blow anybody’s mind but it’s a pleasant, well executed composition. I’ve read that Orris was discontinued when Commodity was relaunched, so perhaps it didn’t sell well. Available currently at bargain prices online, I wouldn’t pay full price for this but it’s great for the price it’s available for now.

I'm delighted to hear that this brand is coming back. When they folded last year, I panic-bought backups of Vetiver, Velvet, Book, and Orris. Orris is, to my nose, their most elegant and expertly blended scent. It's powdery and creamy and slightly vintage, with orris butter as the clear star, but the carrot seed note adds an unexpectedly vegetal aspect to the scent. It's deep and sophisticated but not labored smelling - truly effortlessly chic. I can imagine this smelling beautiful on a man. As a woman, it smells distinguished and discerning. I hope that Commodity won't tamper with this quietly exquisite formula if, hopefully when, it's available again.

Soft, dusty Violet candy and strange emotions. I smell this and feel stuff. I really like it but not enough to spend more than $85 on it. I do want it though. :( It's absolutely unisex leaning slightly feminine but a well dressed gent could certainly pull it off.

At first, the carrot seed is very prominent on me. Then, it settles down into a patchouli-orris. Overall, very nice and different from my other iris scents.

Beautiful soapy floral. Need to wear test but I'm like 65% sure I love it.

It’s flat and powdery. Not enveloping in its powdery quality, just flat.

I've given this 3 full wearings cuz I WANT to like it but I just don't... The first 5 minutes have some promise... And then it just kind of transitions into a VERY synthetic soapy metallic sightly screechy floral with some earthy note (patchouli? Soil? Moss?) But it never really gets there because it doesn't actually GO anywhere... It's really linear and really synthetic and.... For lack of a better word, relentless... It bears a slight resemblance to iris 39 by Le Labo but that one actually smells pretty great... i’d say if you were mildly interested in this but couldn’t quite get on board, give Iris 39 a try and see how you feel. i’ve heard Iris 39 was recently axed by Le Labo, but this one is also discontinued so it seems appropriate. Oh I also find iris 39 a bit more masculine but if you prefer a slightly more feminine iris give Boucheron Iris de Syracuse a try... That one is also nice in my opinion....

I smell nail polish or nail polish remover in the beginning. I guess why Lancome Tresor is listed there bc it also has that opening to me. And probably why Climat is listed too. I can see that connection. Then it softens up and moves to floral herbal note, but it is rather sharp. I am trying to figure out if I want to keep it or not. There is something familiar and old fashioned about it. Like a Lancome bottle from the 80s, some sharpness. There are better scents from Commodity.

This is a typical powdery floral. Unfortunately, for me, the lily note is a bit too heavy and does not work well on me. This perfume slightly reminds me of another commodity perfume called Magnolia, which also didn't quite work for me. I love the orris and pink pepper notes, but I am just not a fan of the white prominent florals.

I was so excited to try this fragrance as it has just been rereleased in 2025 as a limited edition. It has supposedly been reformulated and I never smelled the original 2017 blend but overall... I’m disappointed. My hopes were high, I was expecting something smooth, elegant, iris with a little sparkle and earth. Instead, I get an absolute screamer of metallic synthetic baby shampoo with an Orris flatline somewhere inside. Glad I got the 2ml as I sadly would not wear this

This smells exactly like Parma Violets to me - nothing more, nothing less. It's nice but it doesn't feel like a perfume.

I really wish I got what other people are getting from this fragrance. First of all I smell hardly any sweetness here at all, only powerful, dry, bitter orris. Orris/Iris is one of my favorite notes of all time but this one really disturbed me. I've never had such a response to a perfume before. Orris as a note can be skin-like and kind of human smelling, but this was so cold and lifeless it was morbid. Not morbid in a melancholy way, which I could handle, but in quite a bleak and tactile way. Creeps me out just thinking about it. Honestly an indie horror brand could market this as "Zombie Skin" and it would be believable. Such a shock because I went into it thinking this would be a new favorite. I almost want to give it another try because I feel like something must have been wrong with my nose to have had such a strong reaction-- but it gave me a headache so I probably won't.

$34.95 at Marshall's in the wake of the Commodity wreckage. Not quite a blind buy as I owned the SOAP of Orris for 2 weeks now and..... I am in love. LOVE. This is a slightly sweet, slightly soft, barely powdery (yeay!) Iris (Orris) that fits like a second skin. On me it gets just a touch "milky" or "creamy" and the selling point is, smells 100% NATURAL without ANYTHING harsh, synthetic OR over-powering (like dumping a ton of baby powder inside , Hello Prada !). I am a guy who loves "ladies fragrances" and my chemistry loves Orris. It was a bit warm today when I gave myself about 5 opening spritzes . The car ride home from Marshalls was romantic and lovely. Thus far longevity is fair/good. Am I going to complain for $34.95 ? TRY to nab this before eBay price pirates move in and hike up the prices! This is a keeper. My 2 favorite Commodity frags and Orris and Nectar. I will sleep well tonight with my Orris by my side. Sigh. This is more feminine that most "unisex" scents, so men might wanna sample it first. Ladies and gender-benders who love Iris, be there when the store opens in the morning!

Everytime I wear Orris I fall more and more in love with it. It is unlike any other Iris/orris fragrance I own. It is a beautiful crisp clean buttery orris with some woodiness. I also agree with another review that if orpheon is too much for you, try this! They’re not the same but I can absolutely see why someone would recommend that. I have recently purchased two discovery sets from commodity (one being their archives where I found this beauty and the other with their usual line up like milk, juice, book, etc. and I have to say I have been loving many of their scents!) it may not be the most niche house but they have some really great fragrances. For me most come from the archive line. But if you love a cleaner, crisp take on an orris note (of course it will be powdery, but it’s not a powder bomb) give this a try. I love the way it develops on skin. And the way it preforms is amazing. On my skin I smelled it my entire work day and when I got home. Sprayed at 6am and could still smell it on myself come 6pm. I was very impressed by the performance.

What a luscious fragrance! This is a true unisex fragrance, for sure. The beauty in this is the dichotomy between powdery orris and rich patchouli and vanilla, all blended flawlessly with the greenery of the lily-of-the-valley and tea. This was completely unexpected, and I could see this becoming popular as more people discover it. This took notes that I don't tend to gravitate towards and turned them into something delightful. It's masterfully blended in a way that no one note is too strong, though you can tell orris is the focus. It's not a typical orris scent though, and I commend the perfumer for making this unique. It is both fresh and deep, sweet and bright...it's a fragrance to be reckoned with.

Even though this perfume is called "Orris", it's anything but a one note perfume. The opening is fresh and light--both in projection and feel. Initially I detect some sweet tea, bergamot, powdery orris, a touch of LOTV and a big dose of patchouli. I wish the patchouli was less prominent, but I'm also someone who is fairly sensitive to patch, so take that into account. The opening lasts less than 30 minutes and then Orris turns into a woody scent with cedar and vetiver being most noticeable. Despite the prominent patchouli in the opening, I much prefer the opening to the dry down which I find to be too woody for my tastes. I would easily classify Orris as a unisex scent.

Really, really nice take on orris. I agree with kateapple's and ellementira's reviews in every respect. I do not pick up as much of the patchouli, though. I love the mix of orris with the LOTV and tea notes; very fresh and original. The vanilla base note is a lovely touch, it sort of emerges from behind the cedar to mix with the vetiver and enhance everything else that's going on. I smell the orris notes from start to finish, btw. Update: this lasted 12 hours on my arm! It got softer and softer, but was still very much present after 12 hours.

Very low projection and small sillage, I find this to be more of a skin scent that is great for the office setting or those who are sensitive to stronger scents. It smells natural and not synthetic, soft and powdery and I find it hard to believe this fragrance can be offensive no matter the setting you choose. With that said, this is not a fragrance that I will be adding to my permanent collection. Although very sophisticated and elegant, this fragrance is too understated for my personal taste

Not sure if this got reincarnated by the re-vamped company 2022 - but if you are an iris / orris lover - it's well worth scooping up on the secondary market (I see these on ebay for way under $100.00 - they were $100.00 a pop in Sephora originally - about 5 years ago - so - there's that). This is very very natural smelling -- very "wedding day white". Clean , pure , sheer , beautiful . Not too far off from CREED Love in White or Bond No. 9 Chinatown in the "creamy white" category.

To me this isn't really a powdery iris it's very much floral, I'm not getting a distinct lily - more of a white floral mesh and some pink pepper which I love. Sweet, feminine, vintagesque although not really dated at all, just the note composition is one you'd see in older perfumes. It's vibe is less make up boudoir (which is what I'd be looking for) and more chanel nr 5. Classy scent.

Soft like a kitten cuddled in a cashmere sweater in a basket and there is a bouquet of irises next to him/her. I can see the price has skyrocketed but Thank you God for the 2018 "purge" at Marshall's for $34.99 !!!!!!!! I wish I had found Gold and Book there but I am all stocked up on Nectar and Orris ! I have the SOAPS too ! Best deal EVER at Marshalls !!!!

I find Orris a very feminine, forget-about-me scent, suitable for a night out. However, you will not stand out with this scent, as it feels very generic; in fact, the take on orris is of the "I've Heard this Before". I cannot see a man wearing this scent, because it is too much floral-sweet-sugary. Try before you buy.

I am so happy to find this perfume. It smells like vintage version of Lancôme’s Climat, not the new version, but original, vintage. Brings back lovely memories. I thought that I will never find it because the formula changed in the modern version, and there are so many fake in the market. Great surprise

I do not agree with most of the reviews below. This is not a floral. It’s powdered root, which is exactly what the material orris is supposed to be. I think I understand why this was originally discontinued — the Sephora customer is not the target and likely won’t enjoy this.

This starts with a juicy fresh note, unsweetened and bright. That quickly turns to a classic orris, before disappearing without a trace. No matter how much I spray, I can't get it to last more than about five minutes. Bizarre!

Orris had a potential to be so much more. It doesn't smell how the notes suggest it would, in fact it smells like iris, vanilla, cashmeran. Powdery vanilla, the iris is way in the background and does not smell niche at all.

It's sweet and a bit familiar but I can't make my mind up on what it smells like. A soap? candy? flower? I keep smelling different things: powdery florals, gourmands, plants. Smells nice but gives me a slight headache

totally nondescript on first wear, but I adore this- so comforting, so lovely, not too dense, not too vintage. If Orpheon leans a little too green or hard to wear for you, I'd really recommend this

Lipstick and birkin leather. Classy and pretty restrained in a good way. Smells very French. Punching way out of its price category, this smells expensive.

This smells JUST like gold Dial soap. I love this! Can't imagine paying $135 for a bottle, but I will definitely get the rollerball.

Beautiful quasi-orris scent! Very natural, always a PLUS! Expensive but it's original and longevity is pretty good.

Not sure why I bought this as not really my thing. Have a full 100ml for sale on eBay (UK only).

Like Prada Infusion d'Iris (or Prada d'Iris) and Prada Homme had a baby. Fresh and warm.
