Velvet -

Oh how I adore this fragrance. It’s perfect for fall, winter, night time and on chillier days. At first I honestly wasn’t the biggest fan of it, but I found myself coming back to it regularly. Now I am obsessed with it. It’s definitely unisex in my opinion, slightly on the feminine side because there’s a sweet end note. It smells like a cozy Victorian library with a fireplace and lots of flannels draped over the sofas. To me the first notes I smell are the patchouli and amber, followed by musk and rose while the laudanum makes a nice background for the whole thing. I’m gonna have to get another bottle for the fall!

This is a VERY subtle scent. When I first sprayed it I thought it was fine but didnt love it. BUT It did grow on me though, as it opened up and as I continue to wear it. The more I wear it, the more I enjoy it. It is a veryyy musky, subtle amber patchouli on me. (I don't like when amber or patchouli hijack the whole scent after an hour, so I appreciate this). I personally don't get any floral notes on my skin. This is in my current heavy wear rotation.

This fragrance surprised me. I tried the regular Velvet on paper and wasn't blown away, then I decided to try this one directly to skin. It opens very smoky on me but quickly turns softer - I can definitely pick up on the rose in this but it's in no way overpowering the other notes. It has a sort of airiness that's unexpected for a sweet and smoky perfume, but lends its self well in a skin scent. + The longevity is amazing for an intimate fragrance.

I'm so surprised there is no wood mentioned in notes, out of all the the three Velvets, this one is the woodiest in my opinion. It is very similar to By the fireplace, but without smokiness, and instead there is a light soapiness in the background. I enjoy this very much.

aaathis so good , like smokey woody undertones while remaining slightly powdery but the rose and almond come out rreally nicely to balance it out like... mmmm . tbh more feminine than i would normally gravitate towards but it dont matter i like it

After working my way through the discovery kit, the Velvet fragrances are my favourite. Smoky, slightly sweet rose with a touch of spice. The personal concentration has a lovely amber warmth along with a candied almond note and a more subtle smoky element than in the regular or plus versions of Velvet. If you found those too smoky, I would suggest trying this version as this feels more incense-y rather than campfire (the plus version is VERY smoky). The rose note feels modern and well-blended, definitely something to try even if you've found rose fragrances to feel a bit dated in the past. Personally, I adore rose and smoke, so this is a total winner for me. Is it FB worthy? Hmmm. I love the scent, but I do like the smokiness of the regular and plus versions and I find their staying power much better, especially for Commodity prices. So I would say no, but I may pick up one of the other ones in the future.

Compared to the expressive version, I find this is less sweet and more woody, which is weird. You'd think it would be girlier. On my skin, at least. Bruh idk much about smell anatomy but I would describe the personal as like pretty olfactory where it just shoots straight to the top of ur nasal cavity, whereas the expressive lingers a little in there LOLL thats the best i can describe it. Ig its supposed to be like that. You'd think since this is the personal version, it wouldn't be as powerful, but I smell this on my skin for at least 8 hours. It must be since the sillage is intimate, so it doesnt spread and dissipate as quickly. I prefer the expressive, as it resonates with me more, but take that for what it's worth.

The Velvet line is the only fragrances with Rose I actually find myself really loving (avid Rose hater here) and Velvet (-) is no exception. There’s something so unique about this. It’s musky, cozy, fuzzy warmth. Soft ambers mingle with the tiniest touch of rose but it honestly doesn’t come off as rose to me. I get more of that deep labdanum and musk - the rose petals add that balance of lightness to it. Perfect every day scent for any season or occasion. I own a full bottle of Velvet (+) and the (-) version is in that same ballpark but remove the heavy dose of smoke. These fragrances are the equivalent of a warm hug.

This is a soft musky powdery rose. You still get some of the clove but it’s significantly lighter and less spicy than the expressive & bold versions. It also projects less, but then that’s kind of the whole point of the personal edition. I really enjoy this but in this particular lineup they’re all similar enough that if I’m going to purchase one I’d prefer the bold version to get more bang for the buck.

Lots of rose and almond in the initial spray, with just a hint of patchouli underlying. As it settles, it becomes an increasingly musky skin scent until it fades away entirely. It’s sweet and subtle for the duration, a hug in scent form. Probably my favourite of the Velvet trio, since it lacks the smokiness of both the Expressive and the Bold.

It’s a beautiful dried rose petal and vanilla heavy (like the original Velvet!) with deleted smoke and added musk to soften things up. The description reads this to be a molecular version of the original, and this would be a great layering scent. You could wear it any time of year.

Sultry, mysterious, luscious. Vintage. Aptly named! I immediately think nighttime and smoke when I smell this. Dark cherry brownie vibes too 😆. I'm more of a "sunny and bright" girl, so Velvet- might suit my alter ego... But I am intrigued by it and appreciate it very much! 🌉🍫🍒🚬

Powdery something. I love it that rose is not dominant and although it reminds me of number of other perfumes, I think that black amber gives it something very special. It is alluring and complex and I would say, very unisex. But still, not FB for me.

Rose petals, musk and resin, most commodity fragrances are pure unisex but the velvet ones lean more feminine. Dries down resinous and almost smoky on me with a gentle rose floral, feels sexy!

I smell cloves initially but it fades into kind of a musty sweet scent. Not my favorite Commodity scent, but I don't hate it. The Personal version is too faint.

A nice perfume very warm and cosy. Musc, rose and amber, this scent is more appropriate for cold days. The vibe is: a nice and warm scarf...

This smells very interesting and expensive! High quality dusty rose and labdanum dominate this scent. Powdery and smoky and elegant.

This is the smell of blowing out a candle! I truly like it. Cozy, dry, and Enticing!

Musky, light rose. Not as creamy as the expressive. It’s nice and subtle.

musky amber rose. after dry down it lacks the strong smokiness and cloves note of the expressive version. it's barely there like all the Personal scents, but for a fragrance like This (kind of opulent, luxurious, exotic) being shy doesn't make a ton of sense. would recommend this if you just love the velvet line and need something lighter, or if you want a softer, rose By The Fireplace to wear every day. it's soft like a gauze scarf, while the expressive is more 'velvet'. it's mostly gone after 2 hours though a whisper of iso e super or ambroxan (still don't know what each smells like) remains. the whole velvet line opens with some note that I dislike (not sure what) which disappears in the dry down, so if you spray it & hate it, give it about 5-10 minutes

I love Velvet Expressive so I thought this more personal version would be just as great, but in my opinion, there’s something about it that doesn’t work. It is a bold scent in its makeup with the clove and rose, I don’t think it works as a skin scent. It kind of makes me feel like I got the lingering smell of a night out but because I haven’t showered it off yet not because it was purposefully done. The spicy notes seem to pop more too with this personal version and I don’t feel like it’s as well balanced. This is a scent that really needs to be smelled in its entirety and when it’s toned down it doesn’t work as well in my opinion.

This is super strong and smoky in the opening. So strong it reminded me of A City On Fire from Imaginary Authors more than By The Fireplace. Once the smokiness dissipates slightly, a nice and somewhat sweet amber and rose combination comes forth. I wouldn't mind the smokiness in this scent if it weren't so strong, which is why I was excited to test this lighter, "personal" version of Velvet. Unfortunately for me, it's not light enough. I'll still continue to test this in the colder months, as long as I can stand it. As someone who prefers less strong scents, I am still interested in testing more from Commodity's Personal line.

If I had to describe Velvet range from Commody in one word that would be smoke. For a personal version, this fragrance has got stronger prominent smoky note than I thought it would. On my skin the opening is delicate and smoky, with a touch of rose and woodiness. Then it's transitioning to the smoky note. Longevity was about 3 hours on my skin. My favourite from this range is Expressive version. Breakdown of notes is different on the brand's website.

Veeery similar to By the Fireplace by MM but due to being the “personal” scent space it’s nowhere near as sickly and unbearable and I’ll enjoy wearing this strength sample. In case you haven’t smelt BTF, Velvet is a powdery, smoky scent with a very sweet undertone. It’s fine but not for me.

Light, musky powdery rose. Soft. Not an old grandmother rose, but not a young and fresh rose. More like a mother rose. This isn't the scent for me, but it's pleasant. UPDATE 03/22/2025 Soft, fuzzy, gentle. Winter rose. Slightly spicy.

Given how Commodity is doing the whole personal (-), expressive, and bold (+) thing, it makes sense to compare them side by side and provide one review for all three. While I prefer to test blind it's hard not to notice the names, but I haven't looked up the suggested notes or read any of their literature. With VELVET I'm hoping for something musky, sexy, late at night. So, I'm disappointed to get watery tobacco? The minus reminds me of TF Vanilla Tobacco (watered down), while the plus is more ashy (watered down). The expressive not surprisingly in between (watered down). They are eaten up by my skin, or have shorter than expected longevity, so it took multiple wearings to get a feel for them. I don't get much difference in their sillage either. The plus seems as intimate as the minus. Whatever is mixed in with the (assumed) tobacco note seems to take away, rather than add to. So, you can imagine my surprise looking at the notes that there's no tobacco there. Rose, musk, almond, amber, labdanum, ok, yes, the rose is far more apparent now, and I get a better feel, but it takes a moderate amount of convincing. Testing blind the vibe is a weak musky tobacco that you want more "velvet" out of. So, is this a case of an "ehh" fragrance, or "ehh" branding/name? I'll let you decide.

Reminds me of having tea in an English rose garden, snacking on roasted almond biscotti beside the seaside. I’ve slowly been taking my time through my commodity exploration box. This is my second review, my first being of Milk personal. Velvet personal leads with a beautiful light wild rose scent that to me comes off slightly aquatic at the top. As it starts to dry down you can smell more of the roasted almond. It’s very slight but adds a sweetness to this fragrance that lends well to the skin musk. I’m not the biggest fan of rose scents just because I can find them quite overwhelming. This scent is very subtle and would be perfect for a brunch date or even a romantic night out. I still haven’t found a scent in this kit that I don’t like. The fragrances are so diverse and I feel like I can find a different scent for any occasion. Their simple compositions make them very easily lovable and lend well to layering.

A clove blast, jammy rose, and vanilla; those are the notes I get most clearly. I’m afraid this one just didn’t work for me; it feels too simple and suffocating, with an added layer of synthetic sweetness. Tag(s): rose, clove bomb, vanilla

I don’t care for the combo of the musk, labdanum and patchouli in Velvet. It’s giving an icky smokey, musty vibe that I don’t care for. If you don’t like By the Fireplace, you won’t like this.

Spicy pickle juice. I get no rose, no musk, no sweetness. Just pickles.

Too smoky for me! I get some of the rose and some kind of spiciness, but its just too "smoke"-forward for me to enjoy.

I love that Commodity came out with the personal, expressive, bold options! And for most of the scents, they differ slightly. For example, I did not like paper expressive (very dull and woody) and liked paper personal (kinda like a molecule scent). I have always liked velvet and own the expressive. I just bought the personal hoping it would be more musky, less woody (like the notes suggest). They smell identical and the only different is this one doesn't last as long. So if you are deciding between this and the expressive, go with the expressive!

Expressive was a blind buy turned love, turned to buying BOLD (love best), and now I wore a sample of the Personal Space. I really like this, but it's totally unnecessary to me. However, if this one is your jam- it lasted ALL Day with terrific personal sillage that my husband said he never noticed. I didn't notice the musk turned up, it just felt like Diet Velvet. The wooden crates, dust, dried roses petals, and vanilla are all still there- just lighter.

This is firmly in the category of scents that I would love as a candle but not on my body. This reminded me of By The Fireplace but sweeter and softer. My partner said it smelled like clove cigarettes, lol. Slightly smoky and sweet, feels cozy, a bit like the quiet of thanksgiving after your guests have gone home. Not a full bottle purchase for me but I will enjoy the sample!

My o my what a surprise..... I really don ́t like rose even if I really try, think it is often too sharp, so my expectations were low, when trying the sample.... For me, its a cross between a powdery Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Oud with a hint of "incensy" powdery rose, Tardes almond and Bois Dore Van Cleef.....want to crawl back to bed and dream sweet rosybud-dreams! :) Love it!

There’s nothing smoky in this, but it’s definitely giving a smoky vibe in the opening. A sweet musty, dusty sort of smoke. It’s not a bad thing, just unexpected. On clothes I pick up the rose, but on skin it’s more of a sweet ambery musk with patchouli. Don’t overspray. “Personal” is a lie, this stuff is strong. Whew.

Extremely peppery, like black pepper. A drop of rose, some earthy qualities blended within. After the delightful gourmand that was Milk-, this is a bit harsh, but I can see myself finding it alright, at least in the right situation. Definitely try before you buy.

Even though this is not Commodity Book, it evokes the feeling of a dusty spell book in a witch's lair.
