Free d'Homme

This is possibly one of the best offerings for 2022 and the house of CN is delivering terrific quality, reasonably priced- and with lot of research oozing beneath. The exclusive sourcing from Grasse LMR laboratory allows to deliver olfactory creations, borrowing some of the most respected noses along. This Free d’Homme is a wild yet civilised beast. I see the main frame is around a solid masculine fougere - I feel whiffs of Penhalogon’s Sartorial where the wax accord is a key asset. This could easily come from the “balsamic” interpretation of incense. Here incense is treated in a complex and modern way- airy, light still so loyal to the church feels. Possibly there has been some cleaning of the aromas - similar to what has been done with Patchouli “Majestic Akigalawood” for Bois Imperial of Essential Parfums (Quentin Bisch), but not in a molecular, abstract direction. Saffron also delivers a punch of balsamic masculinity, with cypriol well compounding the recipe. I have not enough words to say how much I appreciate the originality of this contemporary approach. Not overly complex just striking the right balance and with impressive, uncanny command of the (not so) raw materials. Together with Essential Parfums, IMHO Costume National is the go-to entry niche perfumes brand. Another Blind buy! This is fragrance is unhinged... in a good way! None of the notes serve to temper it, they all strike out in different directions, without asking your opinion. No woody backbone, no musky base, no smooth vanilla to be found here. There's no restraint or modesty within Free d'Homme. Sour lime off the top, sticky, dark-resinous labdanum all throughout, Saffron and cypriol add more leathery depth, the incense carries it out into your surroundings on smoky wings. Projection and longevity are on the strong end for sure. Free d'Homme does not pull any punches. Really interesting! Not one I'd wear for others, though that's not to say they won't like it. Edit: Juice has settled very quickly, it's smoother now, less sour, less punchy on the incense. It has also started performing like nothing else I have. I'm talking the drydown still wafts a foot off my skin after 24 hours!! Wow. That's a 9/10 from me now, but gotta be more conservative on the trigger.

My first designer perfume and it's been half a year that I've been using Free d'Homme. To me the citrus stays till the end. It's smoky, somehow both warm and fresh. Incense smell combined with saffron. I've got notes of whiskey (and some friends pointed it out too) and less apparent but a bit of a cannabis-like scent. A very versatile perfume, could be easily someone's signature (it acted so to me since I've bought it). It is nothing mind blowing but pretty impressive, distinctive, not too masculine, wearable at any season and any time.I would especially recommend it to people who usually enjoy warmer, wintery scents but are looking for something more year-round, since if you like citrus, there’s a lot here to appreciate. I'm interested to try other Costume National perfumes. Note: I do not agree with the reviews saying that the color on the bottle is deceptive. I think it smells just how it looks, maybe a bit darker of a yellow.

Theres nothing like Beach Hut Man, not so ever. Stop posting wrong informations like that. This is all about citrusy - metallic saffran - amber and woods. Sticky resinous, citrusy, little smoky and little fruitty but in a smoked fruit well. Also it doesnt get any green sides, only just a shy olibanum in the backround, but its so quiet. All in all a great release and a very good blend of perfume. Julien Rasquinet has already proved that he is great in orientals/resinous fragrances.

It is different, bold,very high quality and unique. Better not to blind buy. Very strong and long lasting. Incensy but kind of earthy spicy as well. It has its own character and I haven't seen anything similar. It might take some time so that it becomes your friend. So yeah, I wasn't sure in the first few sprays, but I am starting to like it.

I just bought it and I really like it. An extraordinary perfume. It doesn't resemble any other perfume. This is also a plus. It is a little fresh, a little dense, quite permanent and its spread is very strong. It can be used in all 4 seasons except very hot weather. My winter perfume is CNHomme. This one will remain as his little brother ;)

Smells like Mediterana, North Africa and Asia made love. I love the scent BUT i had some bad reactions around me with people sneazing. Don't wear this at office. Don't wear this at dates. I imagine a man, with a big SUV, driving to the mountains smelling like this. For men >35-40.

Like drinking a Limoncello in a brand new Chesterfield leather sofa with the highest quality incense burning gently in the background. This is exquisite and amazing art.

Great release from Costume National.The piny incense combo is very nice. Very well blended and easy to wear. Longevity 6-8 hours on my skin. Signature worthy.

Fresh citruses mixed with warm woods . Discrete sillage and not overwhelming . Good longevity + 5 hours . Definitely a blind buy for those who are already familiar with Costume National and deserving a test by the Curious ....Good Value and Quality as with most offerings from this House .

A pleasant versatile scent. Better than I thought it would be based on the rating, and less smoky than anticipated. 8.5/10

I like it! Not a fan of Homme (even if I have it) and Homme Parfum, this have some similarities but it is way fresher and "wearable" without worrying about... It's not a leathery fragrance like the guy before me said (I'm sorry man), maybe it's a little "incensy", but the difference between this and the Homme line IMHO is the fact that this hasn't the cloves note, maybe that's why I find it more wearable on a summer night

I have a sample of this perfume. There is a strong smell of the tips of young pine shoots, which is more and more overshadowed by the bitter smell of incense. A faint citrus scent softens this composition only for the first 5 seconds.

Starts off in the direction of the bottle. Then it immediately turns church incensy. Not for me.... It's ok as a composition, but the colour through me way off. This should be more in a dark grey bottle.

Insect repellant. Heavy on the DEET. With a sprinkle of cinnamon. Bursting through to a mouthful of Big Red.

I have tried the original Homme and I really liked it for its zingy cinnamon and fresh spicy approach, which make it an easy wear for any season and any occasion. With Free d'Homme I was expecting something similar but with a focus on the incense/labdanum combo that make Heeley's cardinal or CdG Avignon such classics. Even something along the lines of Sancti would have been fine. Free, however, does not smell liturgic, clean or airy. The incense note is not churchy at all here, instead it is rather generic, heavy and can be found in many other creations heavy on incense/amber. In the drydown you get a bit of the spiciness of the original but not enough to choose this over it. To me in conclusion, Free is nothing special and lacks the freshness/youthfulness that its name suggests.

Initial citrus blast was short lived, hiding behind the more dominant cypriol oil which persists throughout the scent journey. After about 30mins-1hr the incense appears and is balanced with the soft labdanum. Longevity is good and overall scent is unique. Suited for more mature age and specific occasion. Definitely a challenging profile which is not blind buy worthy. Think of it as an edgy Pirates of Caribbean Johnny Depp..

Definitely masculine leaning. Citrusy, smoky labdanum and incense. It smells a bit harsh to my nose and I can't keep smelling it to evaluate properly as I get a headache. Headaches are somewhat common to me from this brand.

This is too leathery to be a summer fragrance, and not a pleasant leather smell

Nothing to add other then the resemblance with Gucci pour Homme 1. As the performance goes, i think Free gest a plus. Belive me, i have them both, i know what i'm talking about. Unfortunatley, the drydown of Free is way off Gucci, this one turns into Something sinthetic full of those obnoxious notes that You find everywhere around nowdays in fragrances. A sweet smoke of some sort, fixation compounds used nowdays in perfumery. But, If You are a fan of that Gucci 1 and can't find it beside the scalper's ridiculous offers on ebay, try this instead.

I’m honestly surprised no one has compared this to Black Afgano yet. Free d’Homme is a stunning and affordable dupe for Nasomatto Black Afgano. Don’t let the yellow bottle fool you—it’s surprisingly dense and smoky, with a distinctive weed/marijuana vibe reminiscent of Afgano. The references to diesel or citrus in earlier comments actually highlight its beautiful marijuana strain-inspired notes, such as ‘Orange Kush’ and ‘Diesel’. I can’t get enough. A long lasting, sensual, complex scent that deserves more attention!

I ordered the sample set. I've got a huge box full of awesome fragrance samples and a few shower gel samples. I'd say they are all absolutely fantastic. Including this one. A very elegant slightly smokey citrus, very comforting and elegant. Judging from the price and customer care involving sending the set, I'd say this company cares and they just found a new customer. Just in time for the holidays I will buy the gifts from them for my entire family. Bravo.

I bought a full bottle and tried several times before commenting. On me it's a darker version of Fille en Aiguilles by Serge Lutens combined with frankincense. The lemon is only in the beginning. It's smoky, slightly leathery but the star of the show is the pine needle smell combined with frankincense. After a month of aging the longevity is over 8 hours with detectable sillage but reserved projection. I prefer this one actually and like it a lot.

A citrus opening, slowly melts in the background and stays there. The middle and base notes run the show, taking you on an olafactory ride that is unique. It took me a while to get used to this complex and unique fragrance. It's worth exploring this fragrance, but not a safe blind buy, so try before you buy. It could be a great summer and spring addition to your collection.

I have really become a fanboy of Costume National. So of course I Had to blind buy this new fragrance - and fair enough, it is interesting indeed. In no way citrus dominant - Soft opening into an ultra rich incense. In short: It is Etros 'Messe de Minuit' in cool and masculine.
