Coty Musk for Men

Purchased May 2017 -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- - Part II I aim to layer this with Wild Musk. Perhaps that's what's missing from my overall experience with it. I really miss this Coty beauty, this jewel. Just smells amazing, so amazing I need a time machine to go BACK to that May of 2017 and smell it for the first time once again. It's so beautifully depressingly nostalgic, the lipstick and make-up bag and kit smell while cradled in your mother's loving arms as an infant, a toddler, all the way into adolescence. It'll make you run away and cry all the way to the past. It's truly a lost in the past cologne that nobody cares about anymore. So sad, even I've fallen into that unintentionally. Here's why chaps. So I ended up mainly using it at night/for bed time. It's very strong, I ended up preferring Chaz because it's not "dirty" like Coty Musk it's rather clean and vibrant/more pleasant. When I say dirty, I don't mean disgusting - nope. I mean a lovely overdriven guitar tone in the likes of Hey Joe and Sunshine of Your Love; a fabulously tuned small-block V8 burble - not loud, but smooth and brutish when going for second gear - simply not "clean". Now I've distinguished this personal definition it's simply too difficult to "get the crowd" with Coty Musk but BY GOD WILL I TRY. My problem is the bottle is VERY small, 44mL, and I never dared overspraying in the few years of wearing it quite regularly. I thought it was heavy enough, more heavy metal than classic rock though that doesn't make sense. If the lipstick and mother's embrace was already established then where the hell would heavy metal fit? Most mothers prefer classic rock and not heavy metal. What we have here is a failure to comply with modern standards, and I don't care because Jimmy crack corn - he could not help it. People must be pandered to and pleased overall to the detriment of nuance, because Coty Musk has the most nuance of any cheap bottle around. Yet this is the opposite of cheapo, it's super high quality for what it is. That's why I never oversprayed it. It's heavy, pungent, an acquired taste. No man card for you. I miss this bottle a little too much. It's actually the most difficult to approach cologne of all, I can't remember the last time I had it on. It's the black smoke monster in a bottle, it gives me goosebumps. Edit: My bottle's real weak nowadays. Even after 5+ sprays it'll only last 2 hours. Batch: 2277 from 4th October, 2012.

Coty Musk is a fantastic retro cologne. I think it smells quite similar to Jade East and Hai Karate. The problem is that it is an extremely poor performer, barely an aftershave in its longevity. You have to spray it on and then immediately start sweating for it to continue doing its thing. That is why I would really only recommend it for summer wear. Otherwise, it's going to vanish soon after you put it on. Perhaps it was only ever intended as a skin scent, sort of a 1970's body spray. I love the bottle. It looks exactly like it belongs on the sink of somebody like John Shaft in the movies.

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 022 ------------------------------------------------------- Purchased May 2017 Part I This was a great one for a while. Eventually, maybe 1.5 years later there was some cloudy particles swimming around in the fluid. Nowadays they're gone. What's all that about? Still smells fantab and hella masculine. Edit: The particles are back, probably just cheap blending quality or something. I think it's after the bottles has been shaken a little or the fluid has been disturbed they rise and swish around, could be sediment.... Batch: 2277 from 4th October, 2012.

When I sprayed this in my boyfriend's mouth (accidentally, he wasn't supposed to turn around 🤣😝) he said it smelled like his grandma. (Not a deterrent for me 😁) I love it-- not as musky a musk as I hoped for--but I'm not complaining for the price ($12usd.) Re-applying throughout your day will be necessary if you want to keep smelling it. I love this layered with my other musk scents. It's sweet like Emeraude (the amber) but more unisex. The search continues for the intense soapy skin-like musk of my dreams.

(Modern bottle) If you like Stetson or Kiehl's, you will most likely enjoy this too. The musk base in Stetson reads very similar at least to my nose, but Stetson is a little more floral and intricate. Coty Musk is less urinal cakey than Kouros, and less sweet than Kiehl's. Overall a safe buy if you like clean-dirty musk, and also worth looking at as a first foray into the genre.

I love this scent, for the simple fact that it is the "clean, white, t-shirt" of fragrance. Simple, and the bare minimum, but charming in its own right. I'll always have a bottle.

Not bad at all. But it should be called “Amber”, and not “Musk”. It’s all about sweet, woody amber. It reminds me of hippie, exoteric incense.

The recent formulation has little projection and less longevity. It’s a simple skin scent fragrance for a little boost to freshness.

Review is for a vintage Pfizer made bottle, late 70's according to the barcode. This is a very nice, simple, classic musk. I like the fact that it's simply musk, with no interference of heavy or even moderate spices. Very very lightly spiced, lightly floral, musk and amber. I see this as purely base notes with no top notes. This one is definitely vintage and doesn't feel modern. It's got those nitro musks which are now banned because they're forever chemicals. I love the throwback vibe and glad I finally picked it up to go with my other musk fragrances. Uncomplicated, retro cool weekend errands scent that I reach for more often than my other niche musks except for vintage Royall Muske with genuine deer musk. My Pfizer made rendition gets a bit pissy up close, but not super challenging. ×××××××××××××××××××××× Scent 80/100 Performance 50/100 ××××××××××××××××××××××

Edit: add some spiciness and this would make a nicely restrained bay rhum. --- Boxed bottle, probably 1980s. Really doesn't pass as a musk-oriented fragrance in the usual sense. The musk doesn't even come out until well into the drydown but when it does, it is sweetly ambered (or honeyed, per the review below...I could see that). In fact, Zum's Amber bears a resemblance. Others are correct that there's also some Brut-like powdery florals in the background, but not much. As a straight up musk Jovan cleans Coty's clock. Both Avon's Musk for Men and Light Musk are better than either, imo, but Coty's deserves points for being unique. Blindfolded sniff test, I'd never guess it's even a musk. But it's not bad.

Some may want to ask: "Why, Coty Musk was out there competing with Jovan, right? Was it any different?" Yes, Coty Musk is more on the barbershop powder talc meets spiced-amber end of the man-musk arena. It's a bit more polite, and not quite as reliant on any base intended to simulate that of deer musk, though present. While it won't necessarily blow up one's bloomers as other classics that preceded it perfected this style, it's a lovely piece of nostalgia in its own right.

After the initial alcohol blast, prepare for a very quiet, warm/spicy skin scent that's an ultra light relative of Canoe and Brut (both of which I like). That skin scent will last for a few hours or so. Inviting and unisex, with a slant towards the masculine. It's worth a try if you like barely-there fragrances for a lunch date or a run to the grocery store. I may spring for another bottle of this versatile juice that's good for quick hits. Batch # 8113

Modern version still great--straightforward, soft, sweet, but far from effete. One of the best cheapies in that, when smelling it, never does the thought "this could benefit from higher quality ingredients" enter my mind. Avoid its contemporaries like the plague; they're all terrible: this is THE musk. Until you enter Muscs Kublai Khan territory, in which I am not qualified to speak. I digress.

Lovely musk, very barbershop, really has OG Brut vibes with Avon Wild Country.

I tried this as a tester recently and fell in love with it, because not only was it everything Jovan Musk was not, it was everything I thought a musk SHOULD be; powdery, fresh, and warm, but masculine smelling. And when I sprayed it on, it did smell just like that... for a little while. Other reviewers have made the comment that the longevity of this fragrance is not that great, and while I will agree with them, I will only do so to a point. The smell disappeared quickly, only noticeable if you really got close to me while wearing it. But later on in the day, I got hot and sweaty, and the fragrance returned... and turned into a scent that I can only describe as something my grandmother would order out of the AVON catalog; soft, powdery, and feminine. I kept expecting to SEE my grandmother come around the corner while I was at work and give me the biggest hug in my life, it was bizarre. It wasn't a bad smell per se, just not something I want on me while I'm trying to project an air of professionalism while I'm at work. I'm just going to chalk this change up to a bizarre reaction with my body chemistry. I've never had a scent change on me that much in my life. If it would have stayed on me in the original smell out of the bottle, this would have easily been one of my favorite scents. For what it did to me.... no. Just no.

Very retro - and not in an especially good way. It's not that I am opposed to the way this stuff smells - it smells okay - it's just I am completely underwhelmed by it. I sprayed some on my wrist and it was gone pretty quickly. No projection or longevity. Instead skin scent. So.... I pass. Also, I recall that in the early 1970s musk scents smelled very new and exciting. Now they remind me more of laundry than anything else. The thrill is gone.

Coty Musk is an old school skin scent that is far from the traditional musk scent. It's a completely different scent from the typical jovan musk. It smells like a combination of old spice and pinaewood clubman skin scents. If you want an authentic musk scent, go to jovan Musk. Coaty Musk is an old skin scent used by really old grandpas.

I am a musk lover. I bought a bottle of this a couple of years back because someone mentioned it smelling like Coty Wild Musk which I love. It doesn't smell like that to me but I keep spraying a little on my arm here and there on different days. I now get how this smells like Brut. My brother wore (maybe still wears) Brut and I always liked that licorice cologne smell on freshly showered guys. My brother and I used to fight over the black licorice in any kind of candy from Neccos to spice gumdrops. I love the licorice/anise aspect in many fragrances I'm not a person who can espouse brilliantly about notes and chemicals, but fragrances like Canoe, Ambush, Imprevu and the more modern Lolita Lempicka and LL Midnight all have that quality to me. I'm a woman and I love different fragrances at different times including those labeled as "men's fragrance." Anyway, I'm really warming up to Coty Musk for Men the more I smell it on me. Sometimes I spray a bit of this along with the Wild Musk but I'm starting to like it alone. I work at home and dress casually. One of these days I am going to shamelessly douse myself in this after my shower and just enjoy the experience. I particularly like this type of scent on rainy days and we're getting ready to have some of those. I plan on enjoying this. Bon Voyage Fraganticans!

This (older, but undated) bottle of Coty Musk for Men has become the most soothingly enjoyable musk co-dominant scent I've encountered in awhile. Musk may become pleasant, pungent or (most often) pointless, depending on what notes it is paired with, ...therefore Coty has rather brilliantly paired this musk with a luxuriant note of honey. They should have called it Honey-Musk for Men, but I'm sure that name would never get out of a marketing meeting alive. Yes, the note pyramid suggests amber and wood as the major accompanying notes, but this accord is not a woody amber as the perfume industry and popular usage has come to define it today, Rather, it really does give the aroma of a quality gourmand honey. As mentioned above, I am speaking of the contents of a (somewhat) vintage bottle of Coty Musk for Men, ...and have not compared it with the current product, which may be similar or or quite different. Could aging have enhanced this honey note? Possibly so, as other vintage perfumes have also become more richly honeyed with time.

I wear this ALL THE TIME and I love love love it. It's dirt cheap, and I think it's totally sexy on women! It lasts a lot longer than Coty Wild Musk for women, and I like the leathery note in this version as well. One bottle lasts me like a year, and that's with me wildly spraying it all over my body, my sheets, and my house. I LOVE MUSK, and I have a soft spot for cheapie '70s musks like this. I think this scent is totally unisex and surprising on a woman, and I like the way it mixes with my chemistry. On first blast its all alcohol, but it dries down to a sexy, earthy scent that I like to layer with my Kuumba Made Amber Paste and my Auric Blends Egyptian musk oils to make this a little girly. Is it the most refined fragrance? Nope. But sometimes it's just what I need.

Br'eauDeCologne nailed this one. Very light and smells a lot like Brut and Canoe, more so of the latter. Lot of men wore this back in the day so it may remind you of your dad, uncle, older brother, etc. It's a nice cheapie scent wise, but the longevity is very poor. Will require many re-applications if you want all day performance. Thus, it's best for just a quick fresher when you want to smell nice for 1-2 hours. It cost under $10 so really can't complain. My wife wears the woman's version and she likes this one too, but found it too masculine for her to wear. She just refuses to wear a men's cologne. To each their own. BTW gents if you want that 70's musk vibe, Jovan Musk is the one to try. It's a cheapie but much better performance, and it still draws compliments.

You see the words "laundry musk" bandied around sometimes by reviewers, but Coty Musk is literally a laundry musk, bottled as a cologne. It's a sparer, more synthetic version of Jovan Musk, with far fewer florals and a heftier dose of white noise freshness of no discernible character. The ambery musk notes are pretty much all there is, and wearing this cologne on a warm day imparts a chemical "clean cotton T-shirt" effect for roughly 2 hours, mostly at a whisper sillage-wise. Not a bad little thing to own if you're a college guy who just wants something super cheap to wear to an 8 am class.

Excellent, if somewhat sweet, musk of a unisex nature. Recently reformulated, my only complaint... Now it scarcely lasts on skin more than 10 minutes. But a very beautiful, if short, experience! Similar to the women's Wild Musk by Coty, the men's version has a cologne opening but more or less an identical base. The women's version might be slightly sweeter and more floral. In the drydown, each version is a scent that can be used by either sex. I find the tonka bean and amber in both Coty Wild Musks to be truly addictive!

The original Avon Wild Country from the 1960s to the 70s or maybe 80s, smells remarkably similar to Coty Musk for Men from the same era. If done today, one of them would probably be pointlessly branded a dupe. Both smell primarily of honeyed amber and nitromusk. Wild Country is a bit more powdery. It's a remarkably pleasurable and soothing scent profile, ...and of a kind that is simply not being made today. Highly recommended.

[Coty Musk] ⚫️⚫️⚫️⚫️⚪️ This is a really gentle “out of the bath perfume” for me. Perfumes like No.5, Paco Pour Homme and Brut fit this personal brief of mine. Old school, gentle and powdery. Brut and Coty Musk sharing in the large dose of musk, heliotrope and soft florals. They feel like fraternal twins.

Glad this has been added here but I would love to know if anyone can confirm if this has been reformulated as what I smell now is not the same I recollect from the 80's. I only bought this for nostalgic reasons and the scent really brings back bittersweet memories

Coty Musk is a weak fragrance. It must be doused on to have any effect. The musk that it has smells darker much like the shade of brown that it is. Its like a weak version of Jade East with dark musk.

I haven't tried Canoe but can confirm that this is pretty close to Brut. I would enjoy this is if the performance was better. It becomes a skin scent 10 minutes after applying.

Used to wear it in Jr high back in the day..... way back lol ... I have fond memories of it... haven’t smelled it in over 30 hrs though...
