Perfect Subtle Wood Scent (**This review is of the VINTAGE bottle of preferred stock by coty**) This is a amazing wood scent with a blast of Aromatic smells. When sprayed on you get a quick, short lasting smell of aromatic, citrus (now it might be me but I do not pick up the Citrus too well) and some alcohol. (excepted from old cologne like this) After this quick blast of a lovely combination of smells it quickly dries down to a subtle wood scent that makes me drop to my knees. It is truly a amazing smell and might be one of the best that I own when it comes to a wood smell that isn't too protruding. Now the longevity isn't the best (especially in the newer formula) but it does the job and gives you a solid 4-5 hours, but along side the longevity comes to projection and sillage, the projection is quite strong at the beginning but not headache inducing strong. but as said earlier it dries down to the base notes quickly, quicker then I'd like to be honest. It last around 30 mins - 1 hr then becomes a skin scent. The Sillage isn't the greatest and only last for the beginning of the scent. Scent: Synthetic green notes, slight citrus, then dries down to a very natural fresh cut dried wood. Smell: 10/10 Performance/Longevity: 5/10 (If sprayed on a sweater or something similar it last up to 6 hours) Projection: 2/10 Sillage: 4/10 Bottle: 2/10 (Nothing special. Has plastic cap) Sprays: 4 Overall: 7/10

Well, this is beautiful. A simple yet beautiful creation that has survived the test and cost cutting measures of Coty. This is really a breath of fresh air to revisit and try again. Better than most cheapies. The lavender, and what seems to me as violets, really does shine through along with the beautiful Vetiver and oakmoss. If you really want to try something wonderful; first spray on Preferred Stock, then layer on Halloween Man and watch the magic work. If someone was able to combine these two scents and sell, they'd make a fortune. It's that darn delicious!!! Try it, and see. Mix Preferred Stock and Halloween Man, 50/50. It's beautiful... Now, as of 9-21-20, I received a 2.5oz bottle made by The House of Stetson. This is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. The first thing I thought of was Balenciaga Pour Homme in the drydown. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's true. There is a note that's overwhelming that the two share in common. It's incredible. Beautiful compositions. Too many to name. If this old formula was given a new look and new name, you could sell it for twice or three times the price. It's that good. There is no resemblance to the current Preferred Stock formulation today. None whatsoever, except in the violet, and the violet in the old formulation seems to me, to be authentic.

this stuff was monstrous strong in the 1990's . each time they reformulate it this gets more watered down then the older bottle . less woods each time more and more aromatic i guess its a way to cheapen it further. you could smell someone wearing this across a swamp and over a fairly large wooded area it was a very strong juice that carried with the wind . the coty reversion reformulation is not the same though watered down and harsh at the beginning but still enjoyable after that rough opening . its been that way for 15 to 20 years now at least . vintage bottles are hit and miss due to the juice turning rancid over time . for some reason preferred stock does not store good in or out of box over time . they turn bad (rancid) over the years worst then any cologne i have owned. 3 of the 3 big vintage bottles i own (different years) blocked caps design ) have all seem to have lost there top notes and smells flat & strange like a weird candle wax scent or lost there scent all together so i would not suggest seeking vintage out . the newer weaker 5 year old coty bottles seem too have held up so far unlike the older ones which fell apart after many years . This cologne does not remind me of drakkar in vintage or current both are too different

@CElmLund- well said. Someone else mentioned potent and that's nonsense. This has nothing to do with powerhouses (i.e. Heavy and Spicy pachouli/oakmoss...etc.). Preferred stock don't follow 80s, 90s or even today's trend, its unique on its own. It possess the freshness of Prada infusion without the iris fresh woody aromatic. According to fragrantica it's oriental fougere which is not true IMO. This is fresh spicy for goodness sake and no where near the heavy side where some reviewers had mentioned. This is the perfect fragrance straight after the morning shower as you are on your way to office/work, casual outings and all other occasions. It can qualify for a signature scent as it can be used on all occasions and can be used for all seasons apart from winter cause it's on the lighter side. The lavender makes it perfect for autumn and spring and the vetiver and citrus makes it convenient for summer... good quality stuff, highly recommend and affordable. It is a safe all rounder and blind buy without any hesitations. Wicked Longevity and projection and it'll make you smell fresh and confident without spending all your money on recent generic marketing crap. Keep it simple keep it preferred stock!

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 086 ------------------------------------------------------- Purchased July 2019 Lucky to have the 75 mL of this, but I'll say I regret getting Quorum in 50 size because I need it as 100 mL just in case I get Quorum Silver, which is only available currently in 100 size. Preferred Stock is way better than Drakkar Noir. This one and Duc de Vervins are my favourites, with Parfums Belcam Classic Match as runner-up. Preferred Stock is breezy and higher class feeling vs. DN, which rather is more up close of a fern itself, nobody stands around a fern sniffing it hard - fucking hate DN. Coty's more all day and all year too. I'd chuck in Lomani Best as a spiritual flanker to the Coty because it's a simple, good frag. A guy around here hates that one, lol QQ noob. I love it when people hate proper, classic frags because they don't get it and if you know then you know. Not everything was made to brag about, holy shit.

My first "signature" scent. For 2 years, this is what I wore every day, up until I discovered Acqua di Gio. Just purchased a bottle for $9 at a discounter website, and am wearing it today. This is likely the first time I have worn Preferred Stock in more than 25 years.. It has been so long, that I really do not remember what it smelled like. First impression....I thought it was more of a fresh scent, and not as woody/green. Very nice scent however. Went with 5 sprays today, as I know the longevity isn't the best....but forgot about the projection. Strong projection now 90 minutes after applying. Likely will have to reapply only 1 spare in 6 hours or so. Masculine. Doesn't smell like a scent from the 90s. Atomizer is the worst. What amazes me about this scent is that you can still get it at Walmart and Walgreens every day....more than 30 years after its release. Cannot say that about many other fragrances.

Preferred Stock is a nostalgia trip for me. This was my signature scent in elementary and middle school along with Gravity in the 90s. Preferred Stock opens with a sharp green citrus, slightly tart it commands your attention. As it dries down the opening transitions into a smooth coniferous forest accord, green woody and herbaceous, there's also a touch of floral while the citrus lingers effervescent in the background. In the newer version I've found a pleasant sweet undertone that wasn't in the original, other than that Preferred Stock hasn't changed a bit. It still has good performance, longevity, and silage for a cheap Coty cologne. If they ever made an EDT or EDP version it could last all day no doubt, as it stands now you can expect anywhere from a few hours on skin to possibly 8+ on clothing. I'm glad they still make these classics and I hope they never stop.

I love this! After Cool Water I think this is probably my second favorite Aromatic Fougere. Shells like aftershave in the best way! For an “old man” scent, it actually gets complimented relatively frequently. Perhaps more for its uniqueness than its actual scent profile. It absolutely garners attention. This is more warm weather for me. I work on a farm and it lasts and lasts, even through sweating in the sun all day. Impressive for an EDC. It’s $20 at WalMart. If you like the aftershave/barbershop types, definitely give it a shot if you’ve got the cash! You may be pleasantly surprised to see it stands out in a way from many others of its generation. A better aftershave/ barbershop fragrance than Polo. Still appropriate for older generations, like myself, but translates much better for modern times than Polo. Transitions from day to evening very well!

An attractive and striking power house from 1990 that the folks at Coty have all but abandoned. This is what I think Ken Wahl would have smelled like. It's basically a "drug store cheapie" but it's performance blows the lot of them out of the water. This is a scent that's for a certain type of man. Dark and mysterious. Like myself!! It's also best worn from early fall to late spring. It's heavy enough for cold weather but it has a certain fresh, citrus wave to it that lets you get away with it for that much longer. You may be able to wear this year round. This one seems to be the bastard child of the "Coty Three." Jovan Musk and Stetson come in a 3.4 oz bottle with a corresponding, and equally large, bottle of splash aftershave. Preferred Stock, sadly, comes only in a 2.5 oz cologne. No aftershave.

My experience with Preferred Stock dates back to the 90’s and around the time I discovered girls, lol. It’s nostalgia for me 100% and yes I own this and will always have a bottle of this. Yes, the fragrance is dated and I don’t wear it anymore (but I also own 170+ fragrances). It’s masculine, woody, has a hint of green, musk... it almost gives off a light leather. Yet, I know it’s not in there but it does smell like it. I also have Gravity by Cody lol. Same thing and I will always have a bottle of these two... including Curve, Polo Sport, Hugo, Obsession... I don’t wear them but still have up to date bottles that I could throw on any time. Some things we just can’t let go of and Preferred Stock and wintergreen gum... is one of mine lol.

After reading PS was discontinued, I almost shat a baby. I then read it was sold to another company and a wave of relief washed over me. I then became nervous when I read the formula was different. Upon purchasing and recieving Scent Beauty's PS, my fears were laid to rest. While it still does smell like PS, the citrus note was cranked up a bit...as was the price. Why this was tampered with...I have no idea. Maybe to make it more modernized? In short...it still is Preferred Stock. It's just got a fresher citrus note making this a potential year round scent.

This was my first cologne that I wore at 13 years of age. I revisited it a couple years ago and didn’t like it, but then rerevisited it again here recently and found I like it. It is in the vein of Azzaro Pour Homme. Nice barbershop frag. Definitely an old school vibe. Fairly synthetic. And a slight animalic note that I can’t pinpoint. Overall, very nice. I will wear this here soon for the heck of it. Because it’s pretty good. Cheers.

Reacts well to my body chemistry. I like it. Very woodsy. Feels like adventure, like your first time going camping with your family. The missus likes it on me, too, I think more than most other colognes. Like a lot of other Stetson licensed products, it kinda lacks longevity, but I can put it on at 8ish and still smell it by 6.

OMG, this is the cologne that I would always sneak a smell of whenever my mom and I went to Wal-Mart back in the day! This, along with Gravity, always made me immediately conjure up the image of the archetypal tall, dark and handsome man who had a touch of cavalier danger about him. Ah, the memories... :)

Preferred Stock is just a great all-around cologne that you can use in just about any situation. It's inexpensive but not cheap smelling and on me lasts about 7-8 hours. It's been in my rotation since the early 90's and I can see anyone 20+ wearing it.

Just snuck a spray at my local Walmart...wow. I get some of the comments saying it’s like a more “stuffy” version of Drakkar noir. But it’s really nice. Ultra masculine scent, wouldn’t be surprised if it lasts longer than current Drakkar lmao

Your best bet at Wal-Mart. Bright citrus, green lavender, and grassy vetiver. Powerhouse 80's meets classical men's grooming. Essentially, this is what Drakkar wants to be when it grows up.

A very very good cologne for the price. a lot of women said good comment on that one. it was one of the 1st perfume i had when I was young. be careful, not more than 1 or 2 spray

Wore this in 8th grade, 92/93. Found a bottle not too long ago & gave it a try. Immediately brought back memories. Don't often wear it unless to bed. It's great to reminisce.

preferred stock has been reformulated a few times over the decades . . vintage smells like red for men vintage but preferred stock is the darker more troubled brother.

The middle-base is really good as I sniff this in a sustained slow manner-a surprising balsamic and floral scent.

A very well blended, classy green fougere. Easy going, long lasting and comforting! Love this juice!

This is a lot better than I expected, got it because I'm trying to have a little collection of old school 80s/90s cheapie-but-goodies. I'm not old enough to have received this as a gift for Christmas in a gift set, nor had I even heard of it until recently. I would say it's similar to Drakkar Noir, especially in the drydown, but Preferred Stock beats Drakkar with the opening. Damn, Preferred Stock has a really nice opening for a frag of this caliber. Usually the 90s cheapies don't have this nice of a citrusy clean blast, at least in my opinion and findings so far. A lot of these frags smell the same and try to emulate Drakkar, but I think Preferred Stock does things differently enough to stand out. I agree that it's a bit darker, its got the musk, and its a bit sweeter in the drydown than Drakkar. All those base notes must be giving this that "funk" that I feel a lot of the 80s/90s frags have, but that drydown is pretty damn nuanced for a "Walmart gift set" fragrance. I would wear this no problem out and about, and I definitely have. It lasts pretty long too, but if its been reformulated, then I can't really comment on the true longevity. Any season, any occasion. You could dress this up and rock it with confidence. It's different enough with that darker/sweeter tone in the drydown that it could be pretty mass appealing even today. The sweetness feels contemporary.

This is my revised review after owning it for a while. I tested this in a Walmart a few months back and this is some potent stuff and didn't like it then but we all know store testing isn't the best indicator. I understand why Coty spun this away from Stetson (where it was promoted as a Stetson when it first debuted), it smells little like Stetson (except for the lavender which this is FAR stronger) and was it's actually the more refined yuppie city-slicker cousin to Stetson. It has little similarities to Stetson besides lavender. That said the lavender is so strong on this. even at an opening note. That said, when I did eventually purchased it, I found it is scent that is more of a night scent than a day scent and for me, I find it lasts about 6 hours (I'm guessing due to the possible removal of oakmoss.) It is a good fall-spring scent. As I mentioned before, it is pretty lavender heavy even for a top note but it also has some citrus in it's open. It's mid is comparable to another Stetson, Stetson Caliber. The end note is dominated by a slight leather. Overall, this is a good scent but I don't think it is a great scent. I find it to be a 7.2 out of 10. It's not the best scent but a good scent to have though don't buy it in Walmart, you can find it cheaper on Amazon and eBay.

The only reason I have this in my collection is because of nostalgia. This, Cool Water, and Aspen where my scents all throughout high school. I got this originally because for Christmas I bought my stepdad a Stetson gift set with the splash cologne and aftershave, and it came with a free bottle of this. He hated this when he smelt it. Said it "smelt too young", so he gave it to me. Now I find it hilarious that this "smelt too young". Cool Water was my signature scent back then, but this was a fantastic casual scent. It was pretty much what I wore to school, and Cool Water was what I'd wear when I went out. I rarely ever wear this one now, because I always forget how much I like it. It's not some amazing mind blowing fragrance, but for what it is it's still pretty good. I get this green metallic smell in the opening, and the metallicness kind of leaves after 30 minutes or so. Then you're just left with this nice throwback green scent. After a while, when you put "nose to skin", it smells kind of plasticy. But in the air it still smells great. I mean to get any good longevity you got to spray your clothes, but I've spent more money on fragrances with weaker performances.

A top of citrus and spicy wood, evolving into a pleasantly sweet smoky base. This seems to be a bit of a controversial cheapy, but like NaturalBornThrilla I enjoy it and take it very seriously among them. It's somewhere in the space between orange peels, incense, cigars, and a roaring campfire, and it conveys a smoky intrigue that I like a lot, with less sweetness than actual incense. You can get surprisingly lost in it if you breathe deeply; it's maybe a little like Drakkar Noir with less sour fruit and a purer honey-like sweetness, and to me brings about images of slightly crass middle-aged executives smoking in a wood-panelled board room. Rather than getting a BO quality as some do, I find mostly cigarettes and burnt firewood in the base. I agree that too much of this would asphyxiate everyone around you, though. And props to them for the financial double-entendre name.

I recently bought a bottle of this (as it was what I wore in high school, some 30ish years ago) and I'm curious if mine has gone bad. I don't remember it being this pungent. Mine has a smell to it that I'd liken to moss on a forest floor that was soaked with a mix of orange & lemon cleaner. This is certainly not how I remember this at all. Does anyone know that this smells like after it turns? Not like it was expensive because it wasn't, but it would break my heart if this has gone bad as it's a nice part of my past. I know that it doesn't smell as it did in my high school years as it has been reformulated, but I still very much enjoy it. Rugged & manly, very inexpensive. Can't beat the price point on this one.

Bittersweet memories that come in a small black bottle for a bargain price. After Lomani there was another budget friendly scent I wore in high school and even in middle school and that was Preferred Stock. The fresh spiciness ruled my youth and wow did I get compliments as a kid haha! But somewhere along the way it grew old on me and moved on to other scents. I was able to smell it again when I saw it at a friends home and it brought so many memories but the scent itself did'nt have the same magic as it did back then. Still its a good fragrance for its price even if the longevity does not hold on for long but the sillage wow this is the original spice bomb. 7 out of 10

Just got my hands on a “vintage bottle”, the Coty version. I feel lucky. So very barbershop! The opening is a bit rough, but in a few minutes I’m transported back to those days when these types of frags were king. The similarity to Drakkar is evident, but this one perseveres... the latest rendition of Drakkar does not. I’ll wear it when I’m feeling nostalgic for some good old-fashioned manliness. Scent 7.5 (9 if you like barbershop frags) Performance 8 Sillage 7 Longevity 8 Value 8.5 ( to me )

This was one of the first colognes I ever owned. Got it as a kid, and still have the same bottle. I've read some people saying that fragrances turn after a point, but this bottle is pushing 30 years old and I think it still smells like I remember. Fairly aromatic, some spice but more powdery than I remember. Very nostalgic for me, even though now I understand that the colognes I was given as a kid were all drug-store options. Still like it.

Tastes being what they are, I understand that not everyone will like a given fragrance. However, this is one of the few which, between scent, price, and availability, I really don't know how any man can't at least appreciate if not enjoy it. That said, my bottle of the earlier House of Stetson release is a bit sharper and brighter in the top notes than my more recent versions by Coty. Both are good, just slightly different.

This juice has been able to withstand the test of time. I would say this is better than drakkar Noir. They’re in the same league but this is more refined. Both of them have the classic barber shop vibe but this one is just more interesting. Scent 8/10 Sillage 8/10 Projection 8/10 Lonegevity 8/10 Overall 8.5/10 it’s a classic and is dirt cheap. Wear it at night in the cooler months for best effect.

Wow an absolute classic men’s fragrance that’s hits all the right spots for the cheap price. Decent performance , great clean barbershop scent and versatile. Woody , aromatic , spicy and a little musky blended nicely with maybe a hint of citrus. This thing has been around for ages and you can tell in a good way though.

Love the masculine barber shop smell it has. I don’t use the cologne because it’s a little lacking compared to the aftershave. I use the aftershave a lot at night after a shower. And then waking up to that smell on your pillow is nostalgia. The aftershave reminds me of Drakkar Noir or the green Polo.

A very posh cologne for its price. Elegant spice follows immediately after application, than fades into a very satisfying musk base after 30-60 minutes of wear. Decent longevity, but high sillage; must be used in moderation, as the smell is sharp and powerful.

A 90's classic which I had in Jr High. I bought it for nostalgic reasons and still enjoy it. I find it similar to Paco Rabanne Pour Homme in the dry down but not as spicy. I love both fragrances!

"stuffy drakkar" is a good way to put it, more musk, more leather, similar lavender and citrus used in versace blue jeans

the lavender is soapy, made a review saying it was "musty" no it is definitely soapy, sung homme vibes

An absolute classic! As long as they keep making this it will be in the rotation a very unique scent.

I've had a 1 fl Oz bottle for years. Probably since the mid to late 1990's, only about 10-15% used. Never use it. It seems like a finicky scent this Coty fragrance. Others have called it "cheap". It is. Does it's own thing over time too. It either smells bad in some respects after years of aging, or if there's less of that, it still brings that juniper, musk and citrus bang that I can detect. Weirdly my little bottle almost smells pissy on me in the immediate top notes,...(cat pissy??). Sometimes intense florals, mosses, natural juniper and other evergreen plant smells can impart that intense anamalic effect. Skunky. I wouldn't really call it leathery. I have leathery scents and this is nothing like them. It does bring synthetic initial crisp citrus and green elements, that fade, as the funk also lessens.@fraghound a few reviews below described coniferous and I agree. To me the skank due to age it the main issue. But it eventually becomes more powdery and balsamy, possibly more floral, though that animalic to me remains a bit. Something a little Grey Flannel in there? Complex notes buried deep. Lost. I'm catching the musk, oak moss and vetiver, mostly at the end, which starts pretty quickly. Probably an hour or less after first spraying. Preferred Stock evolves this way and then hangs for quite a while. It's best when it's drying off and lingers. When it's dying out it really smells nice, it's best. That's not saying a lot. There are so many better fragrances out there. I keep it for nostalgia and because I'm too lazy to pitch it. It's got longevity. I recall it smelling better when it was newer. I wouldn't call it a great scent. "adequate"? Barely. 4-5.5/10 scent 6 sillage 8 longevity gender ?? (you can wear what you wanna wear) value 5 (because it's borderline skank nowadays)

I first grabbed this cologne out of a desperation to just have some sort of cologne to wear. It immediately reminded me of Drakkar Noir, which I personally don't really care for. I shelved it for a while but upon revisiting it I can see it does have a dissimilar scent profile BUT I do feel that the sum of the scents kind of lands it in a very similar spot to Drakkar that is impossible to ignore. I do prefer this to Drakkar. I think it is a lighter scent which is pleasant. Drakkar fully encompasses a deep dark scent while this one is more akin to the navy blue like the scent within the bottle. There's a hint of coniferous spiciness that is pleasant but at the end of the day, the very forward bergamot just pulls this fragrance right into the same field as Drakkar, especially I imagine for others. I would be keen to smell the old formulation, I cannot detect any earthy-ness or musk at all in my bottle. This one seems to have been made into more of a "modern fresh" smell.

Was really excited to try this. Just got my bottle in the mail. First impression: This really does smell similar to Red for Men by Giorgio Beverly Hills. But I prefer the smell of this one. This doesn't seem to be super high quality, but I do like the scent. Hopefully performance is decent. Will give an update soon. Update: Wore this out today. I don't like it. It feels very stuffy or something. I guess it could improve with time, but so far it's not for me. Update 2: I'm starting to wonder if my bottle has turned, after reading other reviews. It does have a noticeable funkiness to it (which I kind of like), but the citrus notes smell a bit off. I may end up buying a newer bottle if i come across one, because mine is pretty old.

Had this when I was in 8th grade almost 30 years ago. Smelled cheap then and I'm sure it smells just as cheap now. This is little boy cologne; cheap stuff you'll find at the dollar store. Better than nothing....but not by much.

Very similar to Sung Homme, the differences is more pronounced as they dry down and reveal the middle / base notes. Sung is more dry, fresh, slightly smoky, and very masculine. Preferred Stock is more smooth, more towards a female/male shared fragrance. My pick will be always Sung Homme though.

Preferred Stock A rather blunt pun between investing in a financial product and owning a cologne that pays out dividends of having the market value of one's own personal stock be profitably preferred. In the 1990s, Preferred Stock's black, rectangular bottle with a grid pattern, suggesting both skyscrapers and spreadsheets, would have readily hinted at elan and potency in both boardroom and bedroom settings. Today, comparing a 1990s splash bottle by Coty, with a recent spray bottle made after the 2021 transfer to Stetson (Scent Beauty Inc.), one can easily detect that Preferred Stock is one of many men's scents incrementally reformulated to lean more towards the fresh and aquatic mega-trend. The earlier Coty formulation is a complexly aromatic fougere, fairly similar to its chief competitor, Drakkar Noir, ...however, compared to the Guy Laroche classic, Coty-era Preferred Stock leans even more deeply ambery and wooded. In contrast the more recent Stetson product, leans lighter and more greenly aquatic. An upped dose of dihydromyrcenol likely explains much of the change, as it shifts the scent profile a step toward that wet sour tang found in Cool Water, Creed's GIT, Aspen, ...and AXE Cool Ocean, etc. etc, many more. Of course, this transformation is by no means complete. Preferred Stock is still a much more land-loving, forested fougere, in. comparison to the aquatic fougeres listed above, ..but that fragrant forest now grows closer to a scented sea. I notice even the dark glass of the bottle has been changed from slate gray (Coty) to deep blue (Stetson).

This was one of the first fragrances I ever tried. I was a curious young lad one day and while i wouldnt dare touch my dads fancy looking bottles I found this one more towards the back of the medicine cabinet and decided to give it ago. Even at a very young age i thought this smelled very cheap and generic. It smells like the car salesmen that pressure sales you into buying the no warranty car that he knows needs thousands in work to be serviceable. It smells like the cable salesman that tells you HBO is free for 6 months and then wont refund the $30 hbo subscription fee that showed up on your first months bill. Very synthetic and generic mature smell. Needless to say the next time I got curious i grabbed one of my dads fancier bottles and let this sit in the back of the medicine cabinet where it belongs. Sillage and longevity are above average unlike the people that would enjoy this fragrance. This was also around the time "lucky you" had commercials on tv where a guy sprayed cologne down his pants and a very attractive woman crawled on top of him. Being young and impressionable i also wanted a very attractive woman to climb on top of me. Boy did I learn my lesson. That was the most intense burn ive ever felt to this day and it kept burning for 48 hours and for weeks when i had to take a leak. Moral of the story no matter how bad you want an attractive woman to crawl on top of you do not spray any fragrance down your pants. The above experience may have skewed my opinion of this fragrance a little.

I rocked the shit outta Preferred Stock when I was about 10 years old... I got my first bottle from my parents for Christmas one year. I remember getting ready in the bathroom with my ol man... sporting matching black turtle necks and sweaters, as you do. When my dad reached for his bottle of Polo Green, I grabbed my fresh bottle of Preferred Stock. I remember feeling so gawd damn macho... My dad had (still does) steel-wool for facial hair... Something I feel only men born before 1970 are capable of growing. At this time, he had only a straight 1990's style mustache and was just starting to bald, but kept his long black slightly curly mullet-esque hairdo. Hunted, fished, road dirt-bikes, wore Polo Green... And was confident enough to wear spandex shorts and a very loose fitting tank-top when he would take us to ride bikes at the local metro park. Did he ride a bike?? Fuck no... He... He rollerbladed. (Now, for those of you wondering... As this is a fragrance site. This time of year, Aspen by Coty was his go-to.) How many men do you know... That could go into the woods, harvest an animal, field dress that animal, haul it back and butcher it himself to feed his family... And also wear spandex... While rollerblading?? Not many I'd imagine... That... That's what Preferred Stock and Polo Green remind me of.

It's a fresh, green, spicy fragrance that can be worn year around. Any age, any occasion. Smelling this always brings back memories decades ago. If you are a male over 40, you probably remember as a teenager getting Preferred Stock as a Christmas/Hanukkah gift from your parents. Little did I know it was the modest start of my fragrance journey. As for the smell. Think of a fresher Drakkar with a more sporty vibe, deeper leather and added soapiness. Sure, it's synthetic as expected for a drug store legend. However, it does not smell cheap. It's surprisingly interesting and unique enough to keep in a collection. It won't please fragrance snobs. But I could care less... I really enjoy this one for the composition and memories. Sentimental to me for sure as a young lad growing up in suburbs of Boston. Whenever I smell Preferred Stock it takes me back to those days. Note: I've only had the vintage, so I'm not sure if the latest formulation is as beast mode as the vintage in the 1980's? That was some seriously potent stuff. They toned it down a lot according to many reviews here. Which might be a good thing, actually.
