Fumabat

The lone release from Brooklyn NY based Couteau de Poche, Fumabat has perfumer Parid Cefa approaching the time-tested leather chypre with an attention to elements heretofore missing from the style that reached its zenith in the late 70s. Yes, IBQ (isobutylquinoline, also known as pyroline) is here, with its verdant, grassy, rooty, spicy bite, dosed impeccably, which can't be said for other more recent efforts to recapture this style. However, there is a smokiness merging with galbanum and pine that imparts a more rustic sensation of pinon resin incense burning in a wood cabin. Growing more shadowy, inky, and brooding, the incense sensation grows stronger as olibanum resin is more apparent, along with something that reminds of the way geranium leaves smell under the sun. I wear this as I listen to atmospheric ambient music and I have an urge to look out my window and just watch the trees and shrubs rustle in the breeze. Fumabat smolders, it evokes glowing embers that slowly fade into ash. This is one that sends me to my own personal "happy" place, which always somehow has a hint of melancholy.

I think the time has come to write a review on this masterpiece. My friend asked me to try it when in NY for her, well I tried it and fell in love and left with a full bottle of it... it’s perfection in a scent! Before my “feeling powerful” scents were tea forward scents like Russian Tea by Masque Milano or The Moon and I by Floraïku (not sweet or lactonic ones), but Fumabat takes me even further to a completely different genre that I didn’t explore before and I feel like a BOSS wearing it! The smokiness of it is so unusual for me, but it’s addictive. My friend said carnation was too much for her in it but I have to say apart from the very first wave of coldness that I guess is carnation, I don’t get any floweriness. Saying that, it’s not all resin and smoke. There is an undetected sweetness to it too.... I don’t know how, but this is so perfect... Run don’t walk to try it!

It starts as an aldehydic pine scent with a touch of minty freshness that feels like an aquatic just like in the Jacques Bogart One Man Show, continues with a mixture of galbanum and oakmoss, and then the incense-like leather reveals itself. What a totally great retro masculine it is. It is like the modern adaptation of the green toned fresh aromatic chypres of the 70s and early 80s. Possible to find traces of many perfumes from that period. The Bogart One Man Show as I mentioned above, plus Van Cleef & Arpels PH, Caron Yatagan, Ralph Lauren Polo, Oscar de la Renta Pour Lui. It is as if it has been taken a little from all of them and brought out to this day. A pleasant, sophisticated and modern smelling perfume beside it’s old school vibe. I strongly recommend it to those who like this type of fresh aromatic chypres.

Honestly not crazy about the opening, but I absolutely love the dry down on this one. It smells like a true 70’s chypre, so much so that I’m carried back to the barbershops of my childhood. I don’t know what fragrance my grandpa wore (he did have a bottle of Hai Karate in the cabinet), but the dry down here reminds me of him in a good way. This is definitely a nostalgic fragrance, perfect for me, but maybe not for the younger crowd. Longevity and projection are great. Hats off to Parid Ceta and Couteau de Poche for nailing it.

This is the stuff! Pine, oakmoss, leather - and it lasts. (I don't get any mint from it.) Retro and masculine. But... I didn't buy it. $160/bottle at the Scent Bar in L.A. I'm kind of done with expensive scents, to be honest. But this is a good one! -------------- I bought a sample. It smells terrific on skin, but, wow, doesn't last at all. There's a surprise. I don't know why I wrote that it lasted above... that wasn't my experience actually wearing it.

The opening is love at first sniff, the pine is not a typical pine note, and the dry down to the middle notes feels like the perfect balance. Then it starts to crystalize to the base notes, leading to oak moss patchouli and leather, and yet somehow the incense is prominent in all three stages. When I find something like this, it reminds me why I love fragrance. This smells like the perfumes we all wish were not discontinued and yet modern.

This is a very elegant, old-school masculine fragrance. Galbanum, oakmoss, patchouli, and olibanum are the notes that stand out the most to me. It's definitely masculine-leaning and has a vintage, classic vibe as well. Projection is quite powerful during the first hour or so, then it gradually settles into a skin scent within about three hours on my skin. This is definitely signature-worthy for the fall and winter months.

The beginning bursts with everything you see, most notably pine (with a bit of inkiness), then it fades away leaving smoky leather, dry spicy herbs (carnation & galbanum), and some minty facet—This stage is strangely addicting; I wouldn't say it smells "nice" in the traditional sense, but I keep coming back for more! Slowly, it turns more and more bitter (oakmoss), almost amplifying the smokiness & spicy-minty herbaceousness along, at which point it becomes, not quite nauseating or obnoxious, but slightly "bothersome." Eventually, that "popular indie quality" fades and a still-bitter (but smooth) leather prevails with a hint of olibanum. It was good & interesting, then it was okay.

کاج و گالبانوم و اوکموس . بنظر من لوندر هم کاملا احساس میشه . یه بوی تمیزی لوندری هم بین کاج و اوکموس مشهوده گرچه در هرم نیست . ""تلخ و سبز و صابونی"" خلاصه ترین چیزی هست که ازین عطر میتونم بگم. خیلی شارپ ( ولی با کیفیت و بی سردرد) خیلی بی انعطاف خیلی آروماتیک خیلی شق و رق خیلی جدی خیلی . رسمی و خیلی مردونه بی بروبرگرد.مخلوطی از اسموک و بخور و نوتهای تلخ چوبی و چرم و وتیور خاکی در" پس زمینه" حس میشه اما غالب نیستند . من اینسنس و ازین مخلوط بیشتر حس میکنم. کلا اینسنس رو دوست دارم .و اغلب تاثیر مثبت میذاره روی مقبولیت عطر در نظرم . درای داون بوی چرم سبکی به مشام میرسید . بنظرم واسه آقایون چهل سال به بالا مناسبه . کار خوبیه. خیلی رایحه نوینی نداره. کمی وینتیج هست اما مردونه و جذاب. حس میکنم این بو رو در ایام کودکی ام تجربه کردم . برای من بوی نوستالژیکی داره . ولی اسم عطری به ذهنم نمیاد ازون دوران . .. . تعابیرِ : قشنگه ، خوبه ، روی تن آقایون چه خوب میشینه ، از ذهنم گذشت . بنظرم "در زمره ی عطرای اروماتیک " کار همه پسندی باشه و قابلیت بلایند بای رو داره . خوشم اومد ازش اما تاکید میکنم واسه آقایون جوان مناسب نیس. عطرش پیرمردی نیستا ،‌ . واسه یه آدم سنگین رنگین و بانزاکت و باتدبیر . یکم اون پختگی سن و دنیادیدگی تو رفتار و سکناتش باشه. . یه همچین شخصیتی بنظرم. ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ تجربه دوبار تست روی پوست برای من آلرژی پوستی نداشت. بنظرم جایی دکانتش و دیدید حتما تست کنید. عطر ارزشمندی هست جناب سبز و تلخ .درانتها 💜💜💜

A very interesting masculine aromatic that blends in old and new sensibilities. The perfume has a brief opening of galbanum, tea and mint before it moves to an equally brief heart of geranium and pine. It very quickly settles into its dense base of incensy leather surrounded by slight hints of patchouli, vetiver and oakmoss. Like a lighter version of Slumberhouse Norne, this is a masculine well blended slightly smoky aromatic with moderate sillage and very good longevity. A scent that a suave villain would wear. Enjoy!

Smells like eating a package of smarties candy in the woods while a stranger’s fireplace burns a mile or two away.

Tis the season for miscreant fragrances. When I see black liquid, I see dare...and I often make it my business to run through dares. On a moonlit night, I apply Fumabat on my skin in hopes to ascend to higher heights and/or werewolf mutation as a consolation. Surprisingly, this is not a threatening composition and can be worn anywhere. This is practical enough to be considered an autobiography of one's life. This is a perfect Frankenstein consisting of chromosomes from Clive Christian L and Sombre Negra. Usually, niche tend to cater to both sides. Couteau de Poche drew their line in the sand and went the masculine route...the unapologetically masculine route. Interestingly, this is less smoky than advertised. I was expecting train smoke. This is laced with more than one sooty ingredient therefore, the chagrin is appropriate. Absent ingredients include the likes of leather, patchouli and mint. On display is a good percentage of vetiver akin to tree bark that should intrigue most. No one note is cumbersome; even keeled is the theme here. *IN DEEP THOUGHT* Only if my skin could've captured that spine-chilling smell from the bottle. This is a minor victory for the villainous fragrance group proving Fumabat to be more eleemosynary than essential. To all my black liquid enthusiast, don't play it safe...stay dangerous!

After reading Jodi Battershell's review on here, I was very intrigued to try this one. Luckily I found it at Scent Bar in Los Angeles. Considering that there are so many niche fragrances these days that are forgettable, this is not the case here. While other reviewers said they smelled smoky incense, I beg to differ, I never smelled incense that is smoky in perfumery unless you are burning it. Usually incense in perfumery is that dry smell of resin, and smoke comes either from cade, birch tar or natural vetiver. The only smoke that I get here I think comes from natural vetiver. Anyway, I enjoyed this fragrance, and I think it is unusual in a good way. I find Fumabat to be the perfect balance between dry and sweet, sometimes I can’t even tell if it’s dry or sweet. In the beginning, it is loud but pleasant, with smooth pine and green notes. And then carnation shows up as the perfect bridge between the opening green notes leading to the incense, oakmoss and vetiver. I find it to have completely different chemistry in the skin compared to the spray on the paper strip, and it takes time to reveal itself, longer then I anticipated. Once you smell it, you want to go back for more.

Absolutely can’t get enough of this one. I smelled it among many things and a store recently and commented that it’s beautifully dangerous. Only to be worn between the hours of 1-6am. Dark, brooding, after-hours, gorgeous. I got a sample and didn’t try it for a few days, then thought I’d see what it’s like in the morning and that’s when the magic happened. I was hit with a darkly fresh and green open and was hypnotized from then on. As the day went on, the mintyness went away but the smokiness, leather, hint of patchouli, incense, and whatever other magic potion is in here remained. It doesn’t last on me as long as others. Maybe 5 hours. But what a beautiful 5 hours they are. Day or night. Did I buy a full bottle? Of course I did!

The great George Benson put a song out called "Masquearde" with the first verse as followed: ARE WE REALLY HAPPY HERE WITH THIS LONELY GAME WE PLAY? LOOKING FOR WORDS TO SAY..SEARCHING BUT NOT FINDING, UNDERSTANDING ANYWAY WE'RE LOST IN A MASQUEARDE..and that about sums this fragrance up to a tee! This will give you the illusion that something special is about to happen only to be let down easy, but as mention no smoke and definitely no fire. It's does manager to stay somewhat outsides one's comfort zone if your looking for a starter kit into a less then smoke filled room! I can't say that its a competitor with such smoke house fragrances as Slumber House's Norne or Dasein's Winter Nights but its still somewhat a big deal!

Smelled the tester bottle and didn’t know what to feel until I smelled the dry down and thought this is right up my alley. 70’s herbaceous heavy musky dry down. The smoldering pine note is heavy in the opening but still slightly present all thought. My only concern is I think they started reformulating, because I just got a bottle and it smells like a subdued version of the tester bottle. A quick note: the tester bottle reads Made in France, the bottle doesn’t say that. It only reads Made in France on the bottom of the box. I don’t know what to make of this.

Fumabat An old gentleman Chypre fragrance. The one that go dark and deeper, warmth. Very beautiful. Its smooth and modern (descale the fancy stuff from the pass) Reserved only core of gentle man Chypre and decided to end with warm olibanum. instead of animal note. This one on darker of spectrum. (if Basara is smooth side, Fumabat is on that leather olibanum side). I wear this outside, I feel warmth and strong.

This perfume, by far, is the absolute olfactory meaning of authority and self-assuredness , made over a bizarrely earthy floralcy paired with leather-ward smoldering coniferous notes and a profound oakmoss, that head forward towards a nostalgic yet dominant smoky undertone. Fascinating! Ps: I second the rates for its similarity with Caron Yatagan, but Bandit? Knize Ten? Private Label? You guys are serious?

the opening is quite medicinal with an herbal minty smell i quite like. unfortunately the dry-down has the slightest hit of hemp/cannabis which i was surprised to not find in the note lineup! i'm guessing it's a mixture of the patchouli and oakmoss. this gives it a bit of an animalic vibe that doesn't really agree with my nose.

Retro masculine labeled scent. Huge doses of oakmoss, leather, galbanum, olibanum, and smoke. The colder the smoker it gets with balanced doses of geranium, & pine. I can't detect no tea, or mint. This is smokey, and incensy with huge pine tree. Great and well balanced.
