Summer Hill

It is always amazing how a concoction of aroma chemicals can turn into a tropical beach, a flower paradise or, in this case, a Summer Hill. Summer Hill has been around for quite some time (1988 to be precise) and seen, like most fragrances have, its share of reformulations. Still, it holds up. As many mentioned here, it is an amazing transport to summer hills populated with wildflowers, summer grasses, lilies and white flowers - even if there is not one essential oil in it. It is mostly a bed of Iso-E-Super and Hedione creating a smooth, ambery, floral - particularly Jasmine and Ylang - heaven. Yet, it is careful to not be overly sweet, creating that nice balance of flowery, summery and slightly fruity without adding a cloying sweetness that could have been easily the road taken when creating it. Make no mistake, this is a complex perfume. Like many Crabtree & Evelyn fragrances, it is a love it or hate it scent. I choose to love it. It has that extra 'something' (in the form of a nice dose of Indole, among other chems) that makes it stand out and make you go: "What is that?" I think that just may be the magic Summer Hill contains that has made it survive while many wonderful and well loved Crabtree & Evelyn fragrances have been discontinued. Enjoy it while you can and stock up before it, too, is gone!

I have the hand soap and while it’s not a fragrance I would want to wear and call “signature” I absolutely adore this. It smells like a warm sunny day in a meadow, laying under a blossoming tree as the breeze carries the fragrance of sweet flowers throughout the air. It smells like a spring Monet painting. It’s just absolutely gorgeous. Smelling it gives me nostalgia to summers in my grandmothers hyacinth-laced lake-shore cottage home that doesn’t even exist!! So so beautiful. Instant dopamine boost. I get a lot of honeysuckle to be honest. I can totally get white floral in general, but it’s not too musky or pollen-y or green. It is exactly the scent of warm summer air in a blossoming meadow, so there is a warmth and sweetness to balance out the pure floral and grass notes. Again I don’t think I’d wear it often as a perfume because I prefer powdery gourmands as my signature scent, but this is the sort of thing I’d use as a lotion in the evening when I want to feel beautiful and unimaginably feminine.

Whilst I would never ever class this - as a reviewer on another site did - as a "toilet freshener spray", I admit I initially fell in love with this scent when I bought it as a room fragrance burning oil. The sheer floral intensity, far stronger than most other of C&T's fragrances, has surprisingly long staying power for such an inexpensive EDT. Saying that however, the first hit almost knocks the nose off with strong green aldehydes that make my nose tingle and eyes water - its almost (but not quite) medicinal. However bear with it, because when that dies down (and it does so quite quickly), those intensely floral notes come singing through and just last forever on my skin. Heavy, warm white florals that waft with movement, evocative of a hot afternoon in an English country garden. Very feminine, the epitome of summer.

This is as delicious to me as it was when I first discovered it well over 20 years ago. Extremely evocative of its namesake and I only wear it spring and summer. My only problem is after 30 seconds I can't smell it on myself, but that's a good thing. The many fragrances I continue to smell on myself disagree with me and definitely clash with my chemistry. If you love this, you will likely love E. Arden's Pretty, American Beauty's Wonderful (no longer made), Lancome's Miracle, and Faith Hill's True, among others. This is the antithesis of exotics and the animalistic perfumes (which also make me ill). I'm an air sign and this is light and airy, like the most fragrant summer breeze. Love it!

Oh. My. God. This is gorgeous! I tested it at the airport and when I went back to my colleague who was waiting at the gate for bording to start I wondered where this wonderful creamy smell comes from. I tested a lot so I had to seriously start thinking what the heck this is! Summer Hill is the perfect description for this scent. It embodies a relaxed summer day in the English countryside (or any countryside for that matter). Flowers, grass and sunshine - in a bottle. While I won't use it on a 40° day I definitely recommend this for spring and moderate summer days or evenings.

I keep getting fresh sugar snaps and sweet peas! I've never come across a fragrance that paints an imagery as clearly as this one. It's as if I close my eyes and get a nice sniff of it I can see the flowers and plants right in front of my eyes and name them one by one while pointing at them. That one - sweet peas in a woven basket. This one - a sunflower in full bloom. And grasses, all kinds of wild flowers. All under a clear blue sky, drenched in the gentle sunlight of a beautiful spring early afternoon. Very unique. Very loveable.

Likely one of the most feminine of fragrances ever created, Summer Hill smells like you’d imagine a garden painted by Monet to smell -It’s dewey grass tucked amid a cascade of florals and sunlight streaming through the canopy of petals. Crabtree & Evelyn’s lush white floral is their crowning achievement. Wild flowers dance in a gentle melange of lily, orange blossom, and freesia. It’s a timeless romantic scent as perfect for everyday wear as it is for a tea party or a spring/summer afternoon wedding.

Light, delicate, delectable - IMO a perfect day wear floral. Works its charm in hot weather especially. Unlike other reviewers, I don't get much grass but a fine bouquet of wild flowers perhaps scattered by a mossy riverbank. Lol, no that doesn't mean this smells dank...just very fresh like a walk through a garden just after a spring shower. Very natural. Very beautiful.

I really adore the body care products of this scent - I have the shower gel, body lotion & talc-free powder. the scent is just a delightful floral and goes well with a large variety of floral scents. I find the body care products from Crabtree & Evelyn to be very good quality & recommend them.

This is probably my favorite Summer fragrance. It's sweet and floral without being cloying and really does conjure images of barefoot strolls through the meadow in a cotton dress gathering flowers. An amazing scent.

I love the lovely soft smell of Summer Hill. It reminds me of long lazy summer days. As a Crabtree and Evelyn convert I do love most of their perfumes, soaps and talcs.Easy to wear for most ages. Wonderful.

One of my most favorite scents... I buy the shower gel, the lotion, the body spray, and the EDT. So pretty... I use it year round whenever I feel like it. One of Crabtree & Evelyn's most popular scents.

This is one of my favorite perfumes. My husband had bought it for me for Christmass... the only sad thing is that I can't find it anymore. It reminds me of spring in France... just love it!

Perfect name - what you see is what you get. The aroma of summer flowers, perfect for warm summer days. Longevity improves significantly when paired with the available shower gel & lotion.

One of the most beautiful scents I have ever smelled. It's all about flowers but there is also some wonderful freshness in it and thanks to that it does not get too sweet

I honestly adore this fragrance. It’s quintessential white floral with nothing too musky or fussy in the background. Just pleasant florals all the way down.

Birthday, 1999. My favorite gift was a bottle of Summer Hill which I had lusted after shamelessly for quite sometime. Unfortunately, it is so true to the image the name conjures up, it set my allergies off faster than a romantic evening stroll along a beach front next to a field of wild flowers and fresh cut grasses at my aunts property on Cape Cod would. It is so very fascinating the way "they" can replicate grasses and flowers and then liquify the scent...conjuring up memories and images and moments of our lives in a single spray. This is a strong scent that is perfect for wild flower lovers. I can't imagine wanting to wear this during any season but the summer months. There is a spicy note not mentioned that is reminiscent of carnation...(the good ones, not the blue dyed prom bombs), or even the firey Indian Paintbrush, indigenous & wild to Montana and Wyoming. I remember the perfume being very long lasting with abundant silage and medium projection. I wish I could wear it, but my pesky allergies say, "no, no, no". If you like Philosophy's Field of Flowers, or Elizabeth Arden's Splendor, you would probably appreciate this. This is unadulterated salt, flowers, grass & even a sandy scent note which may be from the "wood" (?) notes. There is nary a trace of powder which is so prominent in its sister "Nantucket Briar", so don't fear the powder puff in Summer Hill. Truly a beautiful scent and if you can wear it, I hope to someday smell you out and about! ;)

I am not a "nose" so I can't comment to specific elements. But I can say that when I wear this, I can imagine myself wearing a flowy white sundress, swinging barefoot on a giant tree-swing, on an mild summer day. I wouldn't wear this on a really hot day however, as I feel that would push it into a "too sweet" realm. As is, I think it's romantic and feminine in a womanly kind of way with an almost old-fashioned (not outdated but truly reminiscent of a more genuinely romantic era) feel, the days when men treated women like ladies, but still had plenty of fun in secret.

This was another find in the antique store the other day. I had never smelled many of Crabtree and Evelyn offerings before and I find this one to be very pleasant and nice. It smells like apple blossoms blooming, and the grass has just been cut. Very white floral, spring scent w/ lots of green grass notes. This bottle was only 1/2 full but I got it for $5. A nice find that I will wear next spring.

This fragrance always reminds me of the geraniums my mother planted in the Summer. I'm amazed geranium is not mentioned as one of the notes. It smells light and airy, like the breeze whispering through a cottage garden. It's not that strong on me, so I use it for work. Works best layered with other beauty products in the range, of which I have a few.

this opens with a lot of lily and white florals and a hint of woods. it's dewy and a bit green. it gets a bit woodier as time goes on and i sense the freesia and orange blossom along with grassy notes. perfect for spring/summer. (i probably smelled this back in the day but don't remember it.)

Ny mother-in-law has this and I think it's suitable for her- she's in her early 60's, lives in the country near the ocean and has a beautiful flower garden. I find it's more suitable for someone a little older than myself but find it pleasant and fresh nonetheless.

I have the lotion and love it. I can't believe there's no carnation, though - there's such a spicy note that I love.

This is very summer and sweet, but it doesn ́t give you nausea. Tends to be a bit heavy, if you use to much.

My first signature scent was Crabtree and Evelyn's Rosewater, before they reformulated it around 2009 or so. I remember smelling Summer Hill in one of their stores around this time, thinking it was lovely but maybe a bit too complicated and heady for me at the time. Stumbled upon the lotion the other day and loved it, so I decided to try the perfume as well. For some reason, white florals always draw me in super hard, but wearing them can feel a bit overwhelming, depending on the formulation. Summer Hill is another example of this, joining my rarely used collection of tuberose, lily, jasmine, and narcissis scents. On my skin, it smells almost identical to Nemat's Narcissus. For some reason it goes almost incensey on me. I think I prefer it as a lotion.

I inherited this from my grandmother, and it reminds me of her- classy, elegant, extremely feminine. Perhaps because of my associations with her, it is hard for me to imagine this perfume on a young woman, though I am 18 and it is fine on me. It is a light but very "floral" floral, not at all heavy or weighed down, but a bit overly feminine for my day-to-day wear. (Imagine wearing a flowing pink party dress to the grocery store.)

This was a blind buy for me. It wasn't quite what I'd hoped for. When I first sprayed it on, the flowery scent in the air was wonderful, but on my skin I could really only smell one flower, which was very sharp and made me nauseated. I don't know which one it was. It did slightly fade after about ten minutes, but it continued to be the only thing I could smell; that's when it started to resemble those old-fashioned shaped pieces of soap people used to collect. Very powdery and herbal/medicinal. Only when it had faded so much that it was barely noticeable did it start to smell sweet and fresh. It wasn't for me, but my mother was delighted by the fragrance, so thankfully the purchase was worth it.

I find the lily in this fragrance very strong . I had some products of the skin care series and there I really liked the flowery scent. It's like a mountain full of different flowers. Very summer like. So I got the scent. The scent is close to the body care products but gets really really heavy in the drydown. After a while I found the drydown too nauseating. If you like scents like Flowerbomb, this could be something for you.

Difficult for me for some reason. I always file this one under "don't get it, don't know why." I'm a huge Crabtree and Evelyn fan, but something about this one underwhelms. Too sunny? To much powder? Can't say, but it's definitely not to my liking.

I have the lotion and like it, it's very honeysuckle floral. This smells like an old woman's couch in the 80s (aka like a funeral parlor with mint carpet🤢) (aka way too much lily)

about 11 years ago me & my friend went back packing around canada & usa (im from the uk) as soon as we landed in canada we went shopping for our "travel scents" to remind us of our journeys, i picked "summer hill" i wasnt too sure when i smelt it at first as it does have that kinda "old smell", but i was genuinely taken with it, it reminded me of open fields mixed with rain, bright shiney days , seemed approperate as i ventured around gorgeous canada! i wore that perfume every day for around a year & it always "perked" me up, i hadnt worn the scent for about 6 years when i decided to buy another bottle (picked the set up from ebay for a good price) but it didnt smell the same! maybe i got an old bottle? but i didnt care much for it which was a real shame because i desperately wanted too!! i ended up giving it away, & altho i will never wear it again i rememeber it very fondly x

While cleaning out a cabinet, I came across an old bottle of Summer Hill talc. I thought, "surely couldn't still be good", but I shook a little into my hand to see. One whiff and suddenly I was 22 again, it was summer and I was standing in the C&E store at mall, trying to decide if I could afford to buy the talc AND the perfume - but finally deciding no, just the talc. I treasured that talc, used it sparingly all that summer as I couldn't afford more. It was the scent of summer for me! So that afternoon, I went out and bought myself the perfume and lotion that I couldn't afford at 22, but can today. I don't know if I will wear it much passed this summer, but I sure am enjoying the nostalgia trip for now!!

Quintessential summer fragrance - so pretty! The floral accord is sweet and bright. It's the scent of spring flowers gathered in an apron, laid on a rise of grass in the country. Picked when the air is morning cool, the sweetness of the blooms bursting in a riot of irresistible brilliance. Summer Hill's box suits the smell with it's cheerful botanical print. Indication of the classic happy fragrance inside! Reminiscent of Laura Ashley No. 1 - both the packaging and the scent style with their exaggerated floral accords. I've loved this scent since I first smelled it years ago. Recently bought an unused vintage bottle to bring back the magic of a perfect spring day in a field of flowers.

"Summer Hill" is the perfect name for this scent. There are certain fragrances that have the ability to open up the minds eye and bring you to a magical place. Summer Hill does just that. One whiff and I am instantly transported out of the city, to some beautiful, enchanted countryside, mid summer afternoon, the greenest grass, the most amazing wild flowers growing abundantly, sunshine, perfect blue skys and a soft, warm breeze to carry those lovely intermingling summer aromas through the air. And while I would not classify this as a retro fragrance, Summer Hill does bring you back to a simpler, more innocent time and place. Summer Hill is indeed, my own little slice of heaven!

I have the hand lotion for it. I remember using it a few years ago in college and putting it on during a lecture and my friend next to me said the smell reminded her of all the things she was allergic to in springtime. It does kinda smell like you'd be allergic to it, but I still like it! I can't really make out the individual notes from the lotion but it's green and clean and flowery. The lotion makes me want to buy the perfume. I bet it'd be overwhelmingly springtime and allergic if you layeredp it!

blind buy for me based on the box (how cliché, i know)... and knowing i'm not a white floral girly, this was a risk. unfortunately, it didn't pay off... all i can smell are those terrible little individually wrapped bars of soap you get when you stay in a 3-star hotel. you know, the ones that dry your hands out and leave them feeling devoid of any human skin feeling? this fragrance was launched in 1991, so i wasn't expecting a scent miracle but was hoping for something a bit more timeless. womp womp.

One thing for me I've noticed particularly with Crabtree & Evelyn fragrances is that they really do smell like the name they are labeled. Gardenia and Lily of the Valley are as true to their name sake as you are ever likely to find in a bottle of fragrance and Summer Hills is just that. The smell of a hill springing to life with a wild array of spring or summer flowers. A Bride could not make a more appropriate choice for her or her entourage to wear on her wedding day. Very Romantic Scent.

This really smells just like the grassy hill at my grandmother's house. Many afternoons as a child were spent rolling down this grassy hill. The scent of wildflowers was thick in the air... black eyed Susans, mullein, Indian paintbrushes, clover, daisies and the thick bed of dried pine needles in the nearby woods. This isn't something that's my personal taste for a perfume but oh my if this isn't the perfect snapshot of a hot afternoon in the countryside.

I love Summer Hill, always have. But the other day I bought a perfume oil from an online supplier of natural cosmetics products. The oil smelled almost exactly like Summer Hill. I couldn't get over the similarity. I feel as though I have hit the jackpot. If ever C & E discontinue this, as they have done many other perfumes I will always have a supply.

This perfume has always reminded me of the little decorative hand soaps that sat in a dish in my grandmother’s guest bathroom. It smells like clean white flowers. Definitely a spring scent. I have an older bottle that I’ve used sparingly since Crabtree & Evelyn closed their stores. Today I found a body mist version of it at Marshalls for $5.99

I love the fact that this fragrance comes with all the range of products -- talc, body and hand cream, etc. It a delicate scent, not too light either, perfect for work. I love white flowers scents and this one is great. Lasting power is above average, but not amazing.

Yes, it`s flowery, yes, it`s fresh, but above all it smells a bit cheap, like a cologne rather than eau de toilette...I kind of like it and it does have a lasting power on my skin, but to me it does smell like Lenor for my laundry, sorry.

Clean white florals, fresh meadow flowers, and perfection! Light and summer-worthy. Smells a bit like an elegant version of a child's Avon fragrance my sister once had called 'Spring Rain', I think. Charming.

Overall I liked this scent---beautifully flowery, very light and fresh. My mother finds it difficult to wear most perfumes as they irritate her nose/sinuses, but this fragrance works just fine for her.

As some have already said, it's the perfect name for this scent. Beautiful and very fresh floral fragrance. One of THE best women's perfumes I have ever smelled - lovely !
