Fragrance Review: "Private Eye" by Curatrix Filed under: Classic Crimes of Scent | Case No. 001 | Year: 1949 (give or take a whiff) The night was cold, the kind that wraps around your trench coat and whispers secrets through the seams. I lit a cigarette, leaned back in the leather of my office chair, and let the first spritz of Private Eye do the talking. Right out the gate, the top notes kick in like a snub-nosed revolver — bergamot, cardamom, black pepper — a sharp, clean cut through the fog. Green. Crisp. A gentleman’s handshake with brass knuckles tucked under the cuff. This ain’t your average pretty-boy cologne. This is what the boys down at the precinct would call "evidence" — strong, distinct, and leaving a trail. Then comes the heart. Cypress, violet, leather. That cypress is the star of the lineup — tall, lean, and whispering of piney back alleys and long drives in black sedans. The leather? Subtle — like a worn holster under a detective’s coat. And that violet? There’s something sinister in it. A trace of petrol, like the residue left behind at a crime scene — unplaceable but unforgettable. The drydown is smooth, slow — like the last drag of a smoke after a job well done. Cypriol, sandalwood, cedarwood Atlas. It doesn’t change much — this scent sticks to its story. No tricks. No turns. Just a steady burn with a soft, surprising twist — a cola-like hum in the background, maybe from the sandalwood dancing with violet. It’s sweet, but not soft. Like a dame with a switchblade smile. Curatrix may be the new kid on the block, but Private Eye walks like it owns the place. It’s got the bones of a classic and the swagger of a streetwise vet. Masculine? You bet. It’s what Bogart would splash on before hitting the pavement. If this is just their first case file, I’ll be damned if I’m not sticking around for the whole series. Private Eye isn’t just signature scent-worthy — it’s a whole damn mood. A scent with secrets. One that stays close, speaks low, and leaves 'em wondering. Case closed.

The combination of these notes together works amazingly. It opens up very black pepper and cardamom heavy on my skin, and then the bergamot and cypress come through. It's green and vibrant while also being extremely smooth. I don't pick up the leather, which is fine by me, as this is so grounded that I feel that if the leather was stronger, it'd change how gorgeous this is. The dry down becomes a gorgeous woody scent with the green still prominent.

A brightly spiced opening with an aromatic freshness to it. The scent becomes a predominantly green scent with fresh cypress and powdery violet to ground it. The dry down is wood heavy but still very fresh and green with a richness coming from some leather. A solid combination that works very well together.

It has a very early 2000's designer style. I remember V for Valentino being similar. A couple of the Gucci for Men from that era. Pleasant and nice enough.
