Love's Lemon Scent

I bought several of these a few years ago when they were on clearance, not realizing it was being discontinued again. This is one that I had in the 80s. It used to be a very zesty, fresh, realistic lemon scent with no added notes. Pretty much impossible to find these days because they're always adding something to lemon to try to make it more long lasting (vanilla, musk, coconut, floral or woody notes, etc). This version that I bought a few years ago, like the one in the picture, is not the same as the 80s version. It's a plain, slightly articifial, lemon candy type of a scent that lasts for less than an hour. It's still okay since I appreciate a plain lemon scent, however I wish they would bring back the 80s version, but it doesn't appear like this will ever happen. :( I don't think this smells like any of the perfumes listed above that this is being compared to (I've smelled or had all of them, and they all have floral or woody notes or something else.. this does not). However, I would skip the insane EBay prices for this (which I have done, and citruses do not keep well through time, they spoil and smell like pee). Sometimes I mix lemon essential oil in some good quality grain alcohol for a lemon fix, and the Turkish Duru lemon cologne isn’t bad, although that has added lemon blossom. Eyup Sabri Tuncer Cesme Lemon is also good and lemony (not the classic one, that’s more neroli/ orange blossom).

Update: After a month it grew on me. Maybe I just refused to dislike it because I'm obsessed with aesthetically time-travelling as close to the 70s as possible! The lemon and lemongrass started to blend more in my perception and now I love it! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [Reviewing current version] My earliest encounter with Fresh Lemon was its late 80/early 90s version. I believe it was owned/produced by MEM. The bottle was transparent with the name in horizontally oriented print. I remember it as a straightforward, realistic sweet-tart lemon. The Dana website currently lists theses notes: TOP Lemon peel Lemon blossoms MIDDLE Hyacinth Jonquil BOTTOM Citrus/Lemon blossoms That said, I get exactly two notes. At first spray I smell the older version's bright lemon and, seemingly from nowhere, lemongrass. (Sadly, as I hate lemongrass, but that's me.) The lemongrass turns dominant over time until the lemon is gone *poof*. I'd classify this version as an herbal citrus. The longevity on my hair and clothes is impressive for any lemon especially an inexpensive "youth" version. My hatred of lemongrass aside, I do like the early balance of the two notes. I'd love to read more reviews of this version and see if others get any of the listed notes.

Pearl Jam, has a line of lyrics that sings "Lemon Yellow Sun" and that perfectly describes this fragrance. It smells like a perfect summer day of sunshine, happiness, and lightheartedness in a bottle. It opens with a fresh burst of slightly under-ripe fresh lemons with the slightly sour pith. That my favorite part, but it only lasts about 15 minutes until it fades into a warm musk mingled with that fresh lemon note. I went from this scent to wearing YSL Rive Gauche and they have the exact same dry down. A tart citrus over a warm musk, but Love's Lemon Fresh costs about 10 times less. I wish it lasted longer because it's the truest lemon scent I've ever found. I layered it with Bliss Spa Lemon & Sage shower gel and body butter, which are also great true for a true lemon scent. It's been over 12 hours and I can still smell it very faintly. At this price, it does not bother me at all to keep reapplying. It's worth it and it's the perfect scent for this hot weather. This scent was a huge success in the 1970s and 40 years later, it's still around and still great. That kind of track record says something.

I was excited to see Dana brought this back again. Their current, updated version of the regular Love’s Baby Soft is a little closer to the 80s version I used to use, so I had high hopes this lemon version would be restored to its former glory as well, or at least close. The 80s version was a bright, fresh, realistic lemon with no other notes. The last version Dana had out, around 2014 or so, was more of a candy-like lemon. This latest 2023 version, I think Greenwoman’s review below mine is spot on. I was worried about all the floral notes listed, but all I smell is lemon and lemongrass. Lemongrass isn’t my favorite note, so I find this disappointing. I’ll still use it, but I wish it was more lemony. Fun, nostalgic brand. I do like the newer packaging and sunny yellow color.

I love the original and find the various reformulations to be so so to not bad. Nothing like the original- I have some from each stage of it's decline as well as a little of the original- which has remained true intact and amazing. Real citrus essential oils tend not to fare well over time which makes this even more amazing. I wasted some money and time tracking down what was supposedly the vintage original juice but was instead one of the vintage reformulations or worse. This was perfect- clean, no sugar at all, not a sinus stabber, not sharp but FRESH, sour in the right way. If only we had warning when fragrance are about to go extinct....Ah well, I've said that too many times already.

I love both citrus and retro product so when I heard of this I figured I would give it a try. This product smells fresh and lemon-y clean without heavy perfume notes so I don't feel weird wearing it as a guy. Just got this perfume today, sprayed it on about an hour ago and I can still smell it on me, although it is a lighter scent. You'll probably have to use a few sprays and spritz on skin and clothes to have a lasting impact. I'll personally layer it with the sweet lemon body butter from The Body Shop. One note, I don't care for the smell straight out of the bottle. Smells like hairspray. Once it dies down, you get that fresh lemon smell. :)

It's almost Fresh lemon juice, without any waxy citronella notes. I don't get furniture oil from this at all. However, it smells strongly of ethyl alcohol for a long time after spraying. The bittersweet lemon notes are almost an afterthought. It's too bad this is so cheaply manufactured, because it's the kind of lemon many people hope to find. Pacifica's Malibu Lemon Blossom has a lemon "juice" note, similar to Love's, but it's much more wearable than the liquid this old classic has become. From my teen years, I recall Love's Fresh Lemon as being sweeter, and more lemonade-like than its current incarnation.

Love's Fresh Lemon was my favorite scent from late grade school through junior high (in the 70s). I loved it and wore bottle after bottle of it. This was no Jean Nate scent; it was pure, fresh lemon with some green notes. My mother even liked it on me. I remember smelling it again when I was in college in the 80s and being shocked at how fresh it really did smell, thinking I would be willing to wear it still (I had become a chypre girl by high school). I wish it still existed, and with the same fresh squeezed lemon scent; I'd buy a bottle for the sentimental fun of it.

This was one of my all time favorite fragrances growing up. I so loved this, and Love's rain scent which is not listed, but this one I loved the most of all. This is all about the lemon - fresh natural lemon- no candy, no flowers, just summery lemony freshness. This is the fragrance that taught me to apriciate all things lemon and put me on a "Yellow" scent kick, which opened the way to so many classic scents of that tme.

The original was produced by Menley & James Labs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I wore it in the 1970s as a youngster in summer and it remains my favourite lemon fragrance, very natural and slightly aromatic. I remember going to our local pool drenched in it. Love's was then sold to Chattem, MEM, and finally Dana. I've not tried the later versions but the old bottles are costly nowadays.

Sweet tart lemons:perfect.I love layering this over my B&BW Vanilla Verbena lotion-they make a matching body spray for the lotion but it fades fast so this is perfect.Fair warning though:it has monster sillage upon first spraying.Cheap and pretty:can't say much more:)

If you like this, you might want to check out Dad's Garden Lemon Tree body spray by Lush. Very similar to Love's Fresh Lemon, but longer lasting and with out the alcohol/hairspray smell. I'd imagine it's closer to what the original formula was before Dana took over.

This brings back such memories, its amazing how evocative a fragrance can be! I loved this back in the day, and am happy to have found it again. It's a simple straightforward lemon, and I like it just as much as other, more expensive citrus perfumes I own -

I am not sure why people say this has been reformulated, because it smells exactly as it did when I wore it in High School. The lemon scent is extremely realistic, NOT like furniture polish at all. A good scent if you want to smell clean and fresh, but don't like aquatics or sports frags. However, it's a very weak scent. This is a problem with most of the Love's frags (Baby Soft is the longest-lasting). I seem to remember that Love's briefly sold concentrated cologne sprays, and fragrance oils, back in the 1970's. They should do this again. I wonder if Love's will bring back the Lemon Musk and Strawberry Musk (I know the Lemon Musk was Love's, not 100% sure about the Strawberry)? Those were nice colognes for someone like me who enjoys the smell of musk but gets a migraine from overly musky scents. They also had a Rain Scent which was popular at the time. Correction: I am pretty sure they did not make a Strawberry Musk, but Spiritual Sky (not in the database) still does.

When people on the boards ask "I'm feeling sad lately, what perfume should I wear to make me happier?" or "What fragrances do you like wearing when you have a cold/flu?" I think of this one. With pitiful lasting power but plenty of lemony personality I think this is the perfect fragrance for an instantly gratifying mood boost! The cologne is very easy to wear, I like to lightly mist it on my clothes and skin for a day at home. Good fragrance to wear for doing chores, curling up in bed with a book, or lifting your spirits. The lemon is sweet but not totally without some sourness. I am reminded of lemon heads candy, very strongly. At first spray the first time I smelt this I was like, "lemon heads!"

I was so happy when Dana relaunched this last summer. Of all the many, many lemon scents popular in the early 70's, the days of my youth, this was the very best. More lemon meringue than lemon juice and it lasted forever. Happiness turns to disappointment. It smells exactly as I remember, still luscious, but it literally disappears in minutes. Heartbreaking. It would have to be layered with another lemon or citrus perfume. Or maybe a simple flower scent like lily of the valley. A perfume that's better in memories.

I have enjoyed my stroll down memory lane with this one. It is a nice straightforward lemon that is not too childish. What I especially like is that it starts as a tart scent with lots of zest but it moves over to a sweet lemon pie scent within the first hour. Would I wear it to a power meeting or to impress a date? No. But to the gym, grocery, shopping trip, hanging at home, all yes. It’s a solid like with the caveat that you have to respray repeatedly.

I had Love's Fresh Lemon in the late 80's/early 90's as part of a set that came with Love's Baby Soft, Gentle Musk, Soft Jasmine, and Rain Scent. Fresh Lemon and Rain Scent were my favorites, followed by Gentle Musk and Soft Jasmine. Fresh Lemon had the least staying power of all 5. I recall it being juicy and fresh - and not like Lemon Pledge. I wish they would make this set again!

One of the first fragrances I had as a little one and I sprayed the heck out of it. Scent is soft, floral, fizzy, fresh, and zesty. Best worn during the spring as the longevity isn't very strong and will quickly vanish in high heat, but projection and sillage will be noticeable to others. I hope to find a fragrance as lovely as this one someday (with improved longevity ofc.) 7/10

It seems to me that the 80's LFL (from Chattem or Mem?) was fresher and more like real lemons than Dana. I bought this for my mom from ebay because I understand it's discontinued. It was the one from Dana and I must say I'm a little dissapointed. This was my mom's go-to day scent in the 80's.

I just got MEM love’s fresh lemon sample from surrender to chance—they had several vintage offerings I couldn’t resist once I started adding to the cart... I am alerting those interested because I might not have the guts to try it right away. I’ll be sad if I hate it. Will review later.

Pure lemon. I don't mind this but I wish I could sample a vintage bottle. I love lemon, but this is such a singular lemon note, it took me by surprise. The vintage is apparently a sweeter candied lemon, and I think I would love that. This one I layer with something sugary or vanilla.

Thsi smells divinely like pure lemon juice. Unfortunately that lasts about 30 seconds on me and then nothing. It's like it never happened. Shame, because I am on the hunt for a pure lemon. If anyone wants to try it, I'll swap, even for a sample...

Scent from my teen years. Strong lemon at first, which begins to exude a soft musk scent. Not long lasting;I find few citrus scents are. A bargain priced bottle that I can give as 'stocking stuffers' to a few ladies in our family.

fresh, sweet, & tart. Reminds me of the smell of lemon head candy. Then *POOF* it's gone in a matter of minutes. ps. I got mine at Walmart, Christmas season .69oz for $3.00

I used to wear this when I was a little girl! I will repurchase this fragrance. It is a nice, clean, citrus-y scent. Perfect for a day at the beach, or running errands.

I like this fragrance. It's not anything too special. It's just a citrus, fresh, light scent. It smells good, but it's not something that I would typically reach for.

I had this in the 80's in 6th grade.....I liked the light lemony/citrus soft scent BUT I didn't love it..I just went through 1 bottle and never wanted it again lol

I don't know how the fragrance smells today, but in the 1970s, it was the sweetest freshest lemon scent I had ever smelt. If it's the same today -- I love it. It's just very hard to find. I do have a little vintage cologne splash tucked in a secret place. I get it out and splash it on occasionally ... when I'm feeling puckish.

This scent used to be so good in the 1970s when it was owned by Love Perfume. I saw some in stores last year for Christmas and was thrilled -- until I got home and sprayed it. Now, it smells like a cheap furniture polish (as some other reviewer wrote). Dana sure knows how to ruin a great perfume with cheap ingredients.

Smells EXACTLY like a true Lemon. You cut open a lemon, you have this scent. NO DIFFERENCE. I Hate this scent, because i hate lemon/citrus scents. If you like lemon scents, this is the one for you.

This perfume comes 99.99% close to how squeezed lemon smells like but unfortunately the staying power is only 3 seconds.

i had a bottle of this in the late 80's, and i could never figure out why anyone would want to smell like wood polish.

Too sweet for me, no silage, lemon scent goes away after a few minutes leaving my skin smelling like a cheap soap.

I'll have a lemonade, straight up, with a twist of lemon and a dash of lemon juice. Thank you. That is what this exactly smells like. Never had this one back in the day, but it's lemon, and oh did I mention lemon. I got it at a steal, so I stocked up. I imagine this is good for super hot days, and just a spritz will do. It does not smell like lemon pledge at all. It's a nice zesty fresh squeezed lemon dew drop. So, if you like lemon, and don't care that it doesn't carry a hefty price tag or a "house" name, go for it. I've tried that L'Hadrien, and it is okay, but with that you have to use it up right away or else it turns bad. This is a good buy for your kick around summer days. Perhaps even layering.

This was my first signature fragrance. I started wea ring it in the early '70s. It was very a very popular fragrance back then, and I had everything product they made with this heavenly lemon smell, even foaming facial cleanser. I remember it reminding me of when my mother baked lemon meringue pies. I have been searching for another lemon fragrance that sends me for 40 years. I never have. The closest I can get is combining C.O. Bigelow Lemon 1999 and Laura Mercier Tarte Au Citron.

Yes!I loved this as a child (more than the original!) it’s not going to last forever no, it’s not super strong not the best lemon scent...but it’s nice! If? You can find some at a fair price ( as I’m sure they don’t make this anymore?) get it! As a pocket Bag layering scent..or bedtime etc. I love anything Lemon!! So it’s nice to have a cheap something something to layer with the more expensive scents that don’t last as long ...

I used Love's Fresh Lemon as a teenager and I haven't been a teenager since the 70's. Was this released twice? We used so many Love's scents and they were all wonderful! The lemon is a candied lemon so it's sweet and charming, not at all lemon Pledge-like! The bottles were a nice thick glass that you carry anywhere and not break. I sure miss the delight of shopping downtown as an early teen!

I loved this scent when I was a little girl. Sadly however, just like Love's Soft Jasmine, Fresh lemon smells NOTHING like it did when I wore it. It's a new re-formulation just like Soft Jasmine. I'm sadly disappointed again!!! The only Love's fragrance line that does not seem to be re-formulated and still smells the same is Love's Original baby soft.

My older sister had a bottle of this in the mid '70s and I absolutely could not stand it. The lemon irritated my nose to the extreme. It would be interesting to smell it again and see if I still have such a bad reaction.

Perfect for summer. Spray with abandon because it wears off quickly. But it's low cost. I think a young child could use this as a starter cologne. I know I did.

Beautiful true lemon opening, fades to nothing but is so perfect for bedtime or a kind of out of the shower cologne before you put on your actual perfume.

I just got a bottle and I have to agree with RB2002, it smells like lemongrass. I really wanted it to smell like it used to when I was a kid in the 70s.

This is called "Love's Fresh Lemon," not "Love's Lemon Scent" and I wore it when I was an adolescent, which was a LONG time ago...

Lemony goodness. Pledge, Jean Nate, and Lemonheads rolled up in one. It doesn't last, but it is a mood elevator for sure.
