Ambre Tabac

Today I'm going to be taking a look at Ambre Tabac by Daniel Josier. This fragrance, and in fact this entire house, is one I had never heard of before walking into a Perfumania. While browsing I was handed a test strip with this fragrance on it, and from the first sniff I knew what this smelled like; Angel's Share. The recognition was immediate and undeniable. Now it's no secret that Angel's Share is one of my favorite fragrances of all time, so something smelling similar to it isn't a problem in the slightest. However, that means I'm going to be judging said fragrance with a lot of scrutiny. Will Ambre Tabac hold up? Let's get into it and find out; Scent: The opening is warm, spicy, and sweet. The primary notes I get are tobacco, vanilla, amber, and incense. True to it's name, the strongest of the notes are the tobacco and amber. The tobacco takes point on the opening with a warm, cozy, and sweet accord nuanced with some spicy undertones. It's similar to the tobacco note I get in Rabanne's 1 Million Prive. Right alongside the tobacco is the amber, manifesting as a deep, rich, balsamic note with plenty of sweetness and warmth behind it. Up next is the vanilla and incense. The vanilla serves to provide additional sweetness with a creamy edge. It isn't overly powerful or push the opening into being gourmand, instead it blends into the coziness of the tobacco and amber. Lastly, the incense adds a touch of smokiness and some additional spiciness in the background. The resemblance of this opening to By Kilian's Angel's Share, Parfum De Marly's Oajan, and Rabanne's 1 Million Prive is uncanny. The dry down is still warm, sweet, and spicy. The primary notes I get are still tobacco, amber, vanilla, and incense, and the strongest of the notes are still the tobacco and amber. Not too much has changed in the dry down, honestly. The tobacco and amber are a bit richer, and the vanilla is just a touch more prominent, but that's about it. Performance: Initial projection within the first hour is very strong and can easily fill a room. Sillage matches that intensity with a dense and heavy scent trail. After a few hours the performance was largely unchanged. Around the 7-8 hour mark the projection was about 3 feet and the scent trail was lighter but still noticeable. The fragrance became a skin scent around the 10 hour mark. When to wear: Ambre Tabac is a fall/winter fragrance that is best suited for evening wear. This fragrance is an immaculate choice for any special occasions, but can also be worn formally too. I wouldn't wear it casually or to the office, however. Blind buy: If you like fragrances like Angel's Share, Oajan, or 1 Million Prive, this is a safe blind buy for you. Final verdict: The short and sweet of Ambre Tabac is that it undeniably smells like Angel's Share. The scent profile is very similar, I'd say around 90%. When it comes to performance, Ambre Tabac doesn't play any games. Very strong projection and scent trails for at least the first four hours, and lasting about 10 altogether before fading away. Versatility for fragrances like this is never the greatest, but that's to be expected. It's made for special/formal occasions in the cooler months and exceeds in that purpose, but that's about it. Mass appeal on the other hand is high. There's no weird or off-putting notes and most people will think this smells delicious. In conclusion, if you're looking for a good alternative to Angel's Share this isn't a bad pick at all. The only thing that holds it back is the price. $180 is way too high, especially considering you can get actual Angel's Share for under $200 at discount websites. Even at it's sale price of $130 that's a lot of money. I'll just hold out for Angel's Share. But hey, if you don't mind spending money on that DNA, this is a good one. *PS* It is worth noting that Ambre Tabac came out in 2014, 6 years before the 2020 release of Angel's Share. So if anything, Angel's Share is a reinterpretation of Ambre Tabac. If you wanna trace it back even further, PDM's Oajan started the DNA even sooner in 2013, so Ambre Tabac could be called an interpretation of Oajan. Still, I think Angel's Share does it the best. Scent: 10/10 Longevity: 8/10 Sillage: 10/10

I have never, ever received as many compliments on a scent as I have this one. On my wedding night, not only did I myself receive several compliments on how I smell specifically, but my wife approached me later and said "So many people have come up to me and told me how good you smell. I think they didn't want to offend me by telling you." The catch here is that I had already known this would be the case given that I have been wearing this out regularly for the past year. It's like a fresh slice of apple pie next to a glass of whiskey with a cigar sitting across the table. People comment on it nearly every single time I wear it, and I have not been able to replicate that experience with anything else. I know I sound like I'm shilling this but it genuinely has changed my perspective on the impact a fragrance, and particularly a signature fragrance, can have. It makes me feel extremely confident to wear, and I'm happy to finally be able to say and feel as though I have my own signature scent. I live in the midwest, so it's pretty easy to have a unique fragrance if you venture away from the well known designer brands 😅 I came across this fragrance after the discontinuation of One Million Prive. That had previously been my "signature scent," but really lacked in performance and would only last a couple hours. Unfortunately they had discontinued it, and I had been on the hunt for a replacement. Some had recommended Oajan before I eventually pulled the trigger on a 1.4oz of Ambre Tabac, I tried it once and immediately ordered a 3.4oz. It's like One Million Prive on steroids; not in that it's simply more intense, but that it does everything One Million Prive does much better. It is less overbearingly sweet, yet absolutely sweet enough. It leans further into the likeable qualities of tobacco, particularly a nice cigar. It's "booze" notes are more reminiscent of Hennesy or Remy VSOP than One Millions rubbing alcohol or Everclear. It smells elegant, classy, slightly feminine, yet still quite masculine. I would definitely say this perfume's favorite season is fall. Winter is great too, but this scents roots in Fall are undeniable. That said, it can absolutely work in spring and on summer evenings, if to a lesser extent. I'm still on the hunt for a daytime summer or warm spring scent that fits warmer weather nearly as well as this fits Fall and Winter. Nothing has come close for me. Projection and performance are *excellent*. I often smell this predominantly on my clothes and skin the following day. Projection is just right, picking up a couple feet away from you and not filling the room in an overbearing way. It leaves a faint trail that has literally had people find me in the room to ask what I am wearing. Comments about its alcohol-y nature are true though, and this can cause a burning sensation in sensitive areas, especially fresh out of the shower. This has become an incredibly ego-ic review, but it is what it is. This fragrance makes me feel like a million bucks.

My first try from Daniel Josier, Ambre Tabac is, as the name suggests, primarily a blend of tobacco and amber. It also involves a vanilla acord that's familiar to most anyone who knows and loves the popular "sweet tobacco" category of fragrances, as I call it. Incense and sandalwood provide further character for this blend. Overall, it's a little spicier in the opening and a little creamier and calmer in the dry down, as one might expect, but it's a reasonably consistent fragrance throughout. It performs well and is sweet and creamy, as it seems the animalic side of amber does not come out too much in this blend. However, Ambre Tabac reminds me of a couple of noteworthy honeyed tobacco fragrances, specifically, Back to Black By Kilian and Herod by Parfums De Marly, comparisons mostly intended to be complimentary, and while these comparisons don't seem to be commonplace within the online fragcomm, I nonetheless detect the slight redundancy on my skin. That said, it's an outstanding fragrance, in a similar vein to the abovementioned fragrances, and at a fair price point for strong, niche-quality juice, at $175 for 100ml on the website. 8 out of 10

I'd never tried anything from Daniel Josier (here's where I look back and discover a review from 5 years ago) and I was expecting some rich, quality bizzness and that's what I got. The initial spray for me is honey sweet, sticky, balsamic and laden with spicy goodness. It's a little like TF Tobacco Vanille but then becomes more cinnamon spiced and a complete dead-ringer for Oajan by PdM (or vice versa?) and that is a fragrance I love and own a bottle of. To separate the two I'd say this opens more full on and sweet than Oajan but also simultaneously more full bodied and tobacco like when dried down. Oajan is a bit less turbulent and gives fewer 'looks' or facets to me. Ambre Tabac seems to flip, smelling more spicy one minute then to more sweet, ambery then tobacco like. However, this is nickpicking (they are effectively Identical) and could be fantasy because I've not tried them side by side but I know Oajan pretty well having had a bottle the last several years and put a hefty dent in it from repeated winter wearing. Lasts well and smells of something I love deeply, so this is a winner for me.

Please Fragrantica do me a favor. Daniel Josier is not a Designer. Does anyone ever wore cloths from DJ? Can you buy it in most perfumeries? No. This is a NICHE BRAND. Edit: I have been looking for a sweet tobacco fragrance but trying to avoid Tom Fords TV. I have Pure Havane- Aramis Tobacco Reserve- Spicebomb extreme- 3 the One versions- Jazz Club and a few more Tom Ford clones. I bought Ambre Tabac in April and more recently Franck Boclet Tobacco and Porfumi del Forti Toscanello. This Daniel Josier fragrance is the best of them all. It is also the sweeter of them all. But non of them are really close to Tom Ford TV. The question is, do I need Phaedon Tobacco Rouge before I jump into Tobacco Vanilla, which I only tested on paper? In the meanwhile I own Tom Ford's TV. Man, that is a great disappointment. That one is all about heavy sweet Tonka/Cacao/Cinnamon(?) It is so overwhelming that Tobacco is just shy in the background. Even the Vanille is is faint. Nothing like I remember for the paper strip I took less than 3 years ago. If it is Tobacco you are looking for: nothing to be seen here.

Ambre Tabac to my nose is amazing and unique, but what is also impressive is its construction and behavior. It's very sweet, but not cloying. It's spicy but not nose-tingling. It's bright, but not suffocating. It projects a lot but in a non-invasive way. It's a thick but soft-smelling fragrance. Not sharp or pungent. It's like a scentual warm hug, kinda-sorta sexy but in an innocent way...WHATEVER THAT MEANS. It's in my opinion unisex and depends a lot on the wearer's skin. I don't get tobacco. I just get like a syrupy fragrance that smells drinkable. Amber is vanillic, not of the smokey kind. Beautiful scent. I haven't smelled anything like it. It's kind of hard to find, but the price is totally worth it, especially the 100 ML bottle for $180. I dented my bottle so hard, because I couldn't have enough of it. I'll wear it even after showering. It's that versatile. Max Forti put me up to this fragrance in a video about tobacco fragrances, and he wasn't lying when he said it was good. I regret not finding it sooner. I searched all over and could only find it on eBay thank God!

When I walked into perfumania this was the first scent they tried pushing on me on a hot summer day of all times, and as much as I tried to resist, I bought it and love it. It opens incredibly sweet with a bit of a boozy vibe. The bergamot is just barely there to give a touch of fruityness, going more into a sweet amber sandalwood and patchouli. Not earthy chocolate patchouli, but refined perfume patchouli. The drydown is very nice light tobacco with vanilla and amber while the patchouli lingers in the background. The opening can be pretty heavy and cloying, it doesn’t calm down until after the 1 hour mark. This thing projects and lasts, can get 10 hours on skin, and an eternity on clothes. Not a safe blind buy because of the super sweet opening. Great value per oz, I’ve heard good things about the other scents from this house and am eager to try them. Edit: the opening isn’t bergamot at all, it’s more almondy cherry benzaldehyde like.

I am editing this because I think my earlier review was caused by getting a dodgy sample (off eBay). Since sourcing a genuine sample I have never again detected the garlic note and I love this so, so much I have since purchased a full bottle. I definitely get the amber and tobacco straight up on the opening, and it is really pretty. Starts to dry down to a very sweet candy-like vanilla, almost like marzipan. However, as it develops further on my skin I get this strange note of what I can only describe as... garlic(!!). It's strange and a bit off-putting because it clashes with the rest of the fragrance. I don't dislike this scent, but it does make me feel like I have been cooking up a storm, and then spritzed on some perfume before walking out the door. Just very strange. I'm sure that's just me though! Or maybe my partner slipped a lot of garlic into my dinner this week without me noticing and it is now oozing out of my pores! :)

#1307 in my "Tour de Fragrance" Got this as a decant. There is a niche house called 4160 Tuesdays that has some standout scents. One of those standout scents is called "Eau My Soul." In terms of notes it's far more complex than this scent, and yet they smell very much the same. It's in the same camp as Xerjoff "1861 Naxos", PDM "Herod", Tom Ford "Tobacco Vanille", Boucheron's "Ambre D'Alexandrie." This Jossier scent definitely earns it's place in that stellar company, I would argue earns the top spot, and at a fair price. Like "Eau My Soul" this has a slight powdery character that reminds me of the bath powderey character of Dior "Homme Intense." So it's not really an overtly masculine Tobacco sent, but more unisex. This is car pool, elevator and small office safe. Good performance. Versatile for any wear any season. Definitely a date scent. I'm in for a bottle.

This perfume is just what his name says: ambre and tabac. The quality of the ingredients seems just gorgeous. I have tried only one perfume more by Daniel josier, quetzaly, and the incense at the opening is very similar in both giving to them some similar vibe. The developement between this two perfumes is very different. Ambre tabac goes into a very nice & sweet amber, brighter than in other fragances, and a very natural tobacco note, with a smell like the habanos and a vibe which remember me a bit to tobacco vanille by Tom Ford (only the tobacco). The performance is good, about 8 hours on skin with moderate projection. Ambre tabaco is very subtle, although is sweet It is delicate at the same time so It is very suitable for daytime use. Ambre tabac is for me one of the easiest and roundest tobacco compositions to carry. In this work by Daniel Josier, he has masterfully mixed two very different types of notes, such as tobacco, which tends to be a somewhat strong, dry and even acid aroma with notes of sweet vanilla, delicious almost creamy. The fragrance's output is rich, with a bergamot in the background and sandalwood, the patchouli is already sensed that as it dries, it will gain prominence along with amber and tobacco, all wrapped in a creamy and rich vanilla. Great for a night out, if it had existed, Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca would have used it to win over Ingrid Bergman. Adorable scent. Excellent amber fragrance with a twist. The opening is fruity but not overwhelmingly sweet. It’s like a smoky sweetness. It goes away soon and dries down into a powdery amberly dream... A perfect dupe for Bronze Tonka and Amber d‘Alexandria. All three share the same DNA. But Dosier and Boucheron can be easily find within EUROPE for a reasonable price mark while Herrera‘s remain absent from European market and absolutely overpriced IMO. If you live in Europe buy local! PS: cannot agree with comments saying the perfume stains nor irritates skin. Not true for me. It’s airy and doesn’t leave any stain nor irritation. I apply it directly onto my neck and nothing happened. It’s high quality in all issues: luxury packaging, luxury and beautiful bottle, the juice is FIRST CLASS.

I freaking love this fragrance. It's sweet, strong, and elegant. When I sample this fragrance last year and the first time I smelled it I literally fell in love with. The tobacco and amber are absolutely gorgeous. It's not super sweet like candy almost like sweet booziness to it like strong thick sweet like honey. Amber is one of my favorite notes but with tobacco notes its magic. Not really a fan of tobacco much but this one is amazing. This also reminds me of Parfums de marly Oajan without that honey notes in it. Long-lasting fragrance. I can't wait to pull this off this winter coming up. It's not a heavy fragrance if you don't overspray. 2 maybe 3 sprays will last me 10 hours plus without reapplying. This is my first time trying this house. What a beautiful fragrance

Ambre Tabac is a beautiful honeyed tobacco, amber, and vanilla fragrance with cinnamon spices. Side by side with PdM Oajan it is the richer twin, with a slightly sweeter and more appealing tobacco and amber accord. Projection is even better, as it easily lasts a minimum of 8 to 12 hours, depending on how much is sprayed. Spray residue remains shiny on the skin after it dries down, contributing to its outstanding longevity. As it dries down it can be compared to the beautiful Hermes Ambre Narguile, but it stays closer to Oajan in scent profile. Ambre Tabac can also be compared with Herod, but Herod is about the tobacco rather than sweeter cinnamon spices. These fragrances are all great, but Ambre Tabac has a purity of notes and balance that appeals the most to me.

This smells fantastic. So grown up and classy. It's has some bad boy vibe to it but again in a very mature and serious way. Well balanced with Amber, musks and Tobacco leaf signature different than all the other ones I tried (I = not mean for everyone). Here comes the bad part. I get blisters from this. As if my skin is getting burned by hot oil or like acid it eats my skin and I get itchy and later on little blisters appear. Specially softer parts of skin like neck and inside the elbows. I'm a collector, have over 50 quality bottles and tried hundereds of fragrances. You could say my skin is used to the fragrance oil/alcohol so it's not that. Yet to find someone else with the same reaction. Having said that I WILL be keeping my bottle. That's how good it is.

One of my all time favorite scents. Words cannot describe how much I love this one. Literally perfect. 10/10 I actually love that it smells essentially the same throughout they day, that's how you know it's blended masterfully, and it lasts 10-12+ hours on the skin. I bought it for my fiance when it was still a newish released fragrance, back around 2018. He's on his forth? bottle, and I will be buying it for him every year until I can't anymore. I would say it's unisex, as I wear it also occasionally. If you have any Fragrance Outlet or Perfumania stores near you, I highly recommend stopping in to smell this work of art. Those are the only stores I've seen that always have it in stock.

Great perfume from Daniel Josier. I would highlight the perfect blend of amber, tobacco and vanilla, this last, in perspective, without making perfume is sweet, just a touch. The note of tobacco is excellent and not if it is by itself or mixed with sandalwood, which gives it a dry aspect, which I personally love. It is a perfume of good quality, well balanced and very addictive, more suitable for use in autumn and winter. I have read that some people will find quite similar to Ambre Narguile, fragrance created by J.C. Ellena, master with which Daniel Josier was formed, but I can not testify, I could not prove (unfortunately) Hermes perfume. Longevity and sillage, just perfect.

Lots of descriptions in here. Most of them disparate from one another. Not a honeyed tobacco, thank God. Not oajan, no cinnamon in this and this isn't as heavy (love me some oajan though). Not severely sweet. Can't speak to Tom fords stuff (doesn't last on my skin so I don't bother). It is slightly boozy. Nothing heavy about this fragrance despite the heavy notes. The fruitiness comes out the longer I wear it. Not in your face fruit but enough to give a natural, non-vanilla sweetness. Does lean masculine but I think a confident woman could pull this off with no problem.... Well, maybe not masc leaning. Hmmmm, definitely worth a sniff.

Ambre Tabac is like a combination between Herod and Ambre Narguile, although less tobacco than Herod, less apple pie than AN. However, this is no clone and smells absolutely delicious. Somewhat redundant if you have either of those frags, as it has a similar DNA. Great quality for the price, a solid alternative if you're into this scent profile. I get a little bergamot if I smell the sprayer, but can't really detect any once I spray, or any incense for that matter. I'm getting mainly the gourmand notes, but it's not as sweet as other have indicated. My one major critique is that it doesn't project well, although longevity is decent.

Beautiful scent, arranged samples of this and Green Leather. Ironically this smells very comparable to Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille. A fruity raisin or raisin (or sultana or currant depending on where you live) quickly subdues to blend with damp pipe tobacco and vanilla. The amber giving a darker body. For me the difference is this has a smooth synthetic feel where as TF TV is dustier and gives the impression of real pipe tobacco. Having said that this has a better linear longevity and whilst I miss the textures of TFTV I am keen to replace my next bottle of TV with this. I found Green Leather impresses me enough for a FB order!
