Princess of China

I discovered this fragrance in the discovery box and completely fell in love with it! It’s an incredibly feminine scent, with a soft, fresh femininity. Delicately floral and extremely elegant, it’s gentle enough for everyday wear but also perfect for a date. The fragrance lasts beautifully on the skin, and by the end of the day it becomes more intimate — it projects less but leaves the skin delicately scented. In short, this perfume truly lives up to its name and makes you feel like a princess.

This has a prominent lotus smell and the dry down smells like a beautiful tea. Easily enjoyable and beautiful :)

I love D'Annam, was looking foward to my sample 3rd chapter kit and it did not disappoint - unique, evocative, Upon very fleeting first testing, this is my fav along with spring festival, but I have to wear all for a full day at least. So first impressions: it's a bit reminiscent of Kimono and Sakura Snow from Japanese collection but less powdery and lipstick'y than Kimono and less sharp and aldehydic than Sakura snow. What I love about it is that it's a perfect pink floral WITHOUT the rose. Think your typical rose-litchi (aka Delina & Derivatives) combo but without the rose... Peony and lotus and whatever-it-is do substitute it well. Very femme, very pink, but not overly sweet, not rosy not typical. I guess what I am trying to say is that rose is not your note but you do like gentle florals, try this P.S. my only beef with D'Annam is that their bottles feel a bit cheap-ish... Also I remember that they spiked the price just when I was ordering my two full bottles from Japanese collection, it was painful... if they kept themselves as affordable niche, they would have been priceless :-D But I guess they still have their cult following...

It smells like the concept of a rainy forest or garden. Kind of like the scene in My Neighbor Totoro when they run home from school in the rain and hide under the roof of the little temple. But the scent is very...in the middle. It is not full rain. Not full forest, not full garden. Subtle fresh floral without any powder. I wouldn't be mad about wearing this perfume, I also wouldn't become crazed about it. Someone who is wearing this, I might think, "you smell good" but I'm not personally dying to know the name so I can buy it myself. However, I think it is a matter of taste, and a well-mixed scent, and there are people out there where this will be the scent for you. You can wear it every day in the springtime if you want. It is just unique enough that it doesn't exactly remind me of any other perfume but it has familiar notes so you won't stick out like a sore thumb. In other words, you can blend in without being forgotten. Wear it to school if you want. If you really want a wet garden or forest scent, mix it with a fresh floral Jo Malone cologne such as Wild Bluebell or Nectarine Blossom and Honey, I think that would enhance it.

Sampling d’Annam Princess of China, part of their Chapter 3 collection, unsurprisingly a feminine, fresh floral blend, anchored mainly by a pairing of peony and white lotus, accented by silk, lychee, and pear, so a bit of a semi-sharp, fresh, sweet, fruity aspect, as well, though this is more in the background of what is mostly a gentle white floral blend. It’s fairly easygoing and smooth but is striking which inhaled generously, as it has some density and performance. Surely an option that could suit many but it’s outside my personal tastes a bit. Still, I would like smelling it on someone else, and it’s a clean floral option to deepen the catalogue. As with almost the entire house, this is EDP concentration and priced at $160 for 50ml, sold in the US via the house website and great boutiques like Perfumology. I continue to be impressed by the brand’s diversity and quality. 7 out of 10

Dewy aquatic pink. For some reason I get powder from this scent too. It's the perfume that makes me picture light pink in the best possible way, an innocent, clean and pure scent. While peony scents normally feel girly and baby pink, here everything is stiller and calmer. Like a princess with a noble, sorrowful look in her eyes. She has everything and is held captive at the same time. Like most lotus scents, this one stole my heart too. People complain about how little fruit there is, but to me that scarcity is exactly what makes this scent beautiful. Tag(s): lotus, peony, pink, dewy, aquatic, powdery, serene

When I smell Princess of China I imagine a nymph or fairy (in those "XianXia" movies) wearing pink silk along with the iconic antigravity sash. It opens with beautiful peony—not too rosy, in keeping with the illusion of the flower—as if you noticed the "fair maiden" in a blooming garden, you grab some fruits from nearby trees to offer and to snack while following her down the stream until you notice her floating above a water lily pond; you stay with her until sunset when the memory & scents fade away like a dream.

I've liked a few scents from this house before but this one is quickly becoming my favorite. The first thing that comes to mind when I smell this is lush. It gives off a bit of a sweet scent due to the lychee and pear but it also smells humid if that makes any sense. This reminds me of walking through a conservatory a little. It's sweeter than I expected for sure but I think the fresh elements of the fragrance come through as it dries down. Overall a nice scent for the spring or summer. 8/10

This one genuinely surprised me. Based on the notes, I expected something very traditionally feminine, but it turned out to be far more nuanced and wearable than anticipated. It’s soft, complex, and quietly beautiful, even if it doesn’t last very long. Despite the florals and fruit, it reads surprisingly gender-neutral on my skin. As a cisgender masculine man, I’d wear this without hesitation, it feels refined rather than pretty.

This is beautiful. I think I like silk note in general. It is similar to Kimono, one of my favorites from d’Annam. The main difference: whereas Kimono is somewhat savory with rice powder (it’s not gourmand), Princess of China has slight sweetness from the fruits. The silk accord is the common theme in the two. This really conjures up a long flowing silk dress. Very tasteful and graceful. This is nothing like Da Lat.

This perfume is very powdery to me. I cannot smell the lychee, but it does smell fruity. This perfume makes me feel like I am getting ready with a Chinese princess as she does my makeup, and there is freshly brewing tea next to us, a plate of cut fruit, and a garden of peony flowers is right outside. I rate this perfume a 6.5/10. I won't purchase it again as it is a bit pricey.

this is like the smell of the word "feminine". Super fresh and light pink florals with a itsy-bitsy touch of a super fresh pear smell. The silk note also makes this even more smoother. Pretty much was what i had expected tbh nothing too complex or hard to describe. As a guy, i'd definitely love to smell this on a woman. 8.3/10

Such a beautiful feminine scent. The silk is almost cold to my nose but it makes the entire fragrance very smooth, a little shampooy, but so fresh. Smells like clear skin, shiny hair, beautiful girl in a silk robe

Nice, light, inoffensive fruity floral. I love rose in perfume, but it's very divisive. This scent has the vibe of a rose perfume without that "old lady" touch.

comes off very fresh and basic at first. but dries down to a wonderful silky scent. very feminine and i like it. but still pretty basic.

I am a devote lover of Kimono from d'Annam so I think my expectations were a bit high. Princess of China is a simple soapy peony fragrance. At first it reminded me of one of the auric blends oils that you find at your local hippie tchochke shop (kind of like a floral light incense-y essential oil smell) but that smell faded into a cleaner floral pretty quick. I agree with another user saying that this smells like a vaguely familiar 90s perfume. This would be nice as a bar handsoap. If you love peony or simple nostalgic florals you will like this - I feel just okay about it.

This is what I wished Replica’s Bubble Bath smelled like. This isn’t groundbreaking or original, but it is one of the prettiest clean-soap-floral I’ve ever sniffed. Definitely some white musk and aldehyde that isn’t listed here. It feels girly in a simple, delicate manner. I was really hoping to get a stronger lychee note, because of the story with Yang Guifei, and was a little underwhelmed in that regard. However, this is a gorgeous scent and I love the concept of this whole life. Subtle, youthful, fresh, pretty, clean.

Soapy — not as severe as Kimono or Sakura Snow from this same brand but I'd put it in the same category. I'll also say that a younger person lets say someone in their 20's could pull this off aswell but it's a bit too much for me. Would be nice as a laundry detergent though if d'annam ever wanted to release cleaning products

Although it's a lovely scent, it is super generic. I can't get the pear or lychee notes individually, they just kind of meld into an idea of "fruit." Definitely can get the peony. Super prominent. But yes, this smells designer rather than anything else.

This is my least favourite from the China collection just because soft, safe florals are just so not me but I can imagine how people could enjoy it - it`s clean, feminine and inoffensive (but also not very imaginative or special).

It smells like a mass market fruity floral. There's a prominent iris as well - perhaps this is what they're trying to pass off as "silk"?

I really want to like this but it just smells the same as the other d’annam fragrance I tried :( just kind of mediocre on my skin

initially: vick's vapor rub then: kinda 90s generic perfume vibes, but nice either way!

Pretty true to the note pyramid, but much too syrupy and cloying for me. I would have enjoyed a citrus note to balance out the sweetness. I agree with “reminds me of” The Favourite, which is odd because they don’t share similar notes. Weird. I was intrigued by this mainly due to the silk note, but I don’t detect anything that I can confidently attribute to that. This scent profile in itself is not particularly original or charming to me, as there are dozen, if not hundreds, of fragrances that create essentially the same effect. I don’t believe this to be worth $160, I guarantee there is an identical fragrance probably at your local Sephora. For those drawn to peony/lychee and interested in niche fragrance, it might be worth saving a bit more and going for MDCI’s Cio Cio San or Ex Nihilo’s Fleur Narcotique. Cio Cio San if you want sparkly and extroverted, Fleur Narcotique if you want nostalgic and girly, both have far more character than Princess of China either way.

Yeah, i don’t like this. Very green and flowery in a mediocre way. It’s just... nothing. I can’t even feel anything and imagine something in my head. Smells like a cheap toilet air freshener you bought for 3 dollars. Thank goodness i have a sample, a bottle of this would be a terrible waste of money.

This is a pink silk gown, hung on the line outside to dry on the first slightly sunny day of spring, when all the trees are budding on the cusp of blossom. A girl, all rosy-cheeked and excited for the promise of a grown-up party later, sips on fruit juice and watches her dress billowing in the breeze. If Sakura Snow is a chilly delicate winter, this is the twinkly early sun of spring, and you’re not sure when the next deluge will bucket down. I’m surprised there are no aldehydes listed in the notes, but I’m sure they’re there in the slightly effervescent, soapy, sparkly laundry detergentness that lifts this scent out of being an incredibly generic pink floral. The pear is just about detectable sitting underneath to round out and give a little crisp to the sweetness, and the silk is more of an enveloping texture than a note in and of itself. I get very little lychee here. If you told me this was a super expensive fabric conditioner I would 100% believe you. It’s certainly not a Delina-inspired, jammy, headachey pastiche of girlhood- it’s something more restrained and also more linear. It reads as very young in its lightness and straightforwardness. Clean girlies: if you like something straightforwardly feminine, youthful uncomplicated and fresh af then it will absolutely be for you. I keep putting it back to my nose to sniff, but I don’t really want it back on my skin again. TLDR: pink, cool, sweet but not-too sweet, youthful, freshie/laundry-scent adjacent

This doesn’t remind me of a specific early 2000s aquatic floral, it reminds me of ALL of them. That being said, this is better. It has more nuance which is something I’m getting out of all of the D’annam scents. They rarely knock my socks off with originality, but they are the best version of certain scent profiles because they are almost all incredibly variable/non-linear. The more I smell, the MORE I smell. Like the peony lychee shines in this which is not an untapped brief, but this hits the back of my nose and something like a lemon candy scent comes out. Really back of the mouth sweetness and FRESH dewy floral. Fresh florals lovers will appreciate this with no question.

This smells very nostalgic and familiar but from the 90’s era. Like a rich persons bedroom. Maybe like Cher Horowitz (from CLUELESS) room full of clothes, beauty products, shampoo, hair spray and perfume from that era. A closet full of nice silk or satin clothes that soaked up the scents from the products in the bedroom but in the best way possible because this is a very nice scent. Also with that “I want to be a supermodel, and my hair will shine like the seaaaa”🎵 background music.

kinda crazy there’s no melon note i get a really strong impression of honeydew/ melona ice cream. opens really soapy and airy; the peony adds a delicate softness. then it becomes this effervescent sparkling melon i really enjoy. Dries down into a clean floral musk

so disappointed to not get any lychee in this! without it starts as just a powdery floral which was a bit dull and not particularly pleasant. gave way to a nice pear, a bit like jo malone’s English pear and freesia, but that’s pretty much it.

This is very pretty and mass appealing. I knew based on the notes that I would like it. However, this is nothing original and can be found for much less money in the designer realm.

Fruity and juicy pear, with lychee and subtle florals. Smells soapy, but not awful. It's very gentle. I think it's fine but Mohra Silky Rose is also pretty decent

To my nose, this smells only floral. I get no pear or lychee, and am disappointed, Sakura Snow is a better done floral.

The notes sound lovely, I'd definitely would like to sample this.
