Angel Food

Stop your search, fellow cake-loving fragrance enthusiasts: this is the solinote cake to beat all cake scents. You really CAN have your cake and eat-I mean... smell it, too. Despite the name, it's most definitely is not an "angel food" cake. To my nose, angel food is distinctly airy/spongy - in contrast to the denser richness that can be found with a regular cake. This cake is still fluffy - it won't smother you in any overbearing cake density. The egg whites, vanilla, sugar, and coconut are well-blended, realistic, but still very wearable in this vanilla-forward gourmand (nothing weird about the egg notes, either - just adds to the gourmand feel). I used to think this could pass as a flan, as the two desserts share similar notes - but this is very clearly cake, and not a custard-y/eggy flan. Although no butter is listed, there's just enough of it here to bring more warmth and prevent this "cake" from being dry. A light, but smooth, sugary musk is also present in the background. And for those that normally avoid coconut, you might not be able to detect it here - as it's just a hint, adding depth and dimension. Overall, this is very much a linear "yellow cake" scent experience (richer vanilla-based, with egg - rather than a white cake). Angel Food Cologne could be sold at Victoria's Secret, along the lines of Bare Vanilla and Vanilla Lace - but even MORE gourmand and realistic. Will continue to be one of my signature birthday scents - and also love wearing this in fall/winter as a cozy, creamy-sweet scent treat for cooler weather! P.S. When first ordering my bottle from Demeter, I noticed a vinegar-like undertone to the blend (and saw some other reviewers complaining of a similar issue). After letting my bottle sit, this went away completely - so it's one you might need to let macerate.

This is a delicate, fluffy, sweet coconut-y gourmand. It's true to the name, and does smell like angel food cake, but it also reminds me of Rafaello, the white, spherical coconut-almond truffles made by Ferrero Rocher. There's also a baked goods accord here that I've smelt in other Demeter gourmand scents. This is one of the lighter Demeter scents I've tested, I think partly because Angel Food is a lighter type of scent, but I imagine performance improves once the vanilla ages and the juice darkens. However, the sillage wakes up about 30 minutes in and it's a bit stronger. It leaves an oily sheen on the skin. This layers well with J.R. Watkins Coconut & Honey body products. Pros: this is one of the nicer representations of coconut that I've smelt. Cons: it's pretty light as others have mentioned. If this darkens and performance improves I will update my review.

For me, this is exactly what it says on the tin. After the alcohol carrier has evaporated it smells a great deal like vanilla sponge cake. After half an hour, it just smells like vanilla and faintly, at skin level, like fondant (which is to say, plasticky sugar). I'm still getting decent projection four hours in (one spray is plenty). It does dry down slightly powdery. I am not getting any rancid/metallic/off notes. If you are looking for an extremely straightforward, literal gourmand, this fits the purpose. I expect it would also be very versatile for layering. I could imagine finding it a bit boring, but not unpleasant.

i have this one! i love it a lot, its very very sweet. i cant get enough of sweet scents as you can see LOL doesnt last that long unfortunately! i've had my bottle for nearly 20 years ATP so its uhm. very very brown. like apothecary liquid snake oil amber brown. but its really nice! im a huge fan of gourmand scents and this is no different, even if it is a tad heavy on the alcohol for the first like 10-20 minutes. now i dont have a newer version of this so i can't compare but for what i do have, its nice if you want something cheap and warm and sugary. don't count on it lasting, though

This is so me when i first sprayed it it reminded me of 2 of my favorite perfumes ever but especially mad potion, it fits really well in my collection. I just got it a few hours and ive noticed people say its not that strong so thats the only downside to it. It's exactly what i was looking for, but it made me realise i probably prefer woody perfumes more.

My number one favorite perfume! I would love to see what you guys recommend for layering if you are a huge fan of Demeter.

I like wearing this one when I need to soften my heart a little. This is what I imagined the cake on Dr. Oetker’s vanilla sugar packs would smell like...I have never smelled real angel food cake because I am Romanian, so yeah, this soft, sweet scent can easily be associated with childhood sweet pastries in general 🤍🤍

UGH!!! Way to much coconut so disappointed. I was hoping for a real Angel food smelling spray but this is just vanilla coconut with mostly coconut. I wanted more of the wheat, almond, and sugar to stand out. but no :( If anyone has recommendations on a scent like that pm me! Its nice but not what I was hoping for.

This one has potential, unfortunately it didn't last that long and it was so faint. All I smelled for the most part was vanilla which I love. I wish it was stronger. In general, these Demeter scents tend to be quite weak.

The inital alcohol scent is very strong, but once it dries down the scent is decent, it's sweet and is reminiscent of angel food, though the coconut is slightly overpowering. Does not last particularly long and the scent stays very close to the skin. I had to use a lot of sprays to be able to smell it on myself at all. Overall I wouldn't repurchase but it's not bad.

Ugh. This scent! It is so frustrating! Grrrr! I bought it, my very first Demeter, from The Scented Garden website in 1999. I loved it. Adored it. Foody. SO very, very foody. Coconut, glazed almond, vanilla...delightful. It reminded me of warm spring days spent on Maryland's Eastern Shore (where I attended under grad) and fun. I was just learning and loving Gourmands and I had a blast doing so. Fast forward to 2017. After years of putting it off (I swapped my original bottle and was somewhat swap lifted in the process! Long story.) I finally bought a large bottle off an online, discount retailer. After fidgeting for days in anticipation for bottle, I tore it open and took a big squirt. Uh oh. What the hell happened??? Where was my gorgeous almond/coconut/cake?? All I smelled was sweet (you know, the kind of non descript sweet note in drugstore sprays), pineapple (huh?!), and alcohol! Okay, I reasoned, it must be a bad! Old. Fake. Something!!! I went on the forum immediately and checked to see if others had bad experiences at this particular retailer. It was 50/50. So, what did I do? Miss Stubborn? I order yet ANOTHER bottle from Demeter. Once again I waited calmly, just knowing the other place had undoubtedly duped me out of 18 dollars. But no, just no. This bottle was just as awful. I spray it. Smell pineapple and rubbing alcohol and then bye bye scent. Poof. No, either my otherwise strong memory is wrong or they changed the formula like so many companies do! So now I have two bottles taking up space and a sadness that I will never again smell that glorious cake scent. **Demeter- I ordered a dozen samples around Christmas. All of them, ALL of them, have the SAME plastic undertone. I wore and own Tigerlily ( a favorite from 2001) and even that one smells like the same plastic.

Being a huge fan of gentle gourmands, I blind bought a bottle of this about 5 years ago, truly believing that no matter how faint it was or how poor the longevity, there was no way I was NOT going to like the scent. What I didn't anticipate was that the fragrance would straight up stink. Even after the initial alcohol blast dissipates it smells primarily sharp and chemical, almost like burnt rubber or gasoline. Sitting behind this is a very fraudulent vanilla, like artificial extract from the dollar store or something, with a hint of coconut and almond that *would have* been quite pleasant if not for Absolutely Everything Else Going On in this cologne. In spite of this, I've never actually gotten rid of the bottle, since I wouldn't try to sell or swap with any poor unfortunate soul, and literally no one wants to simply take it off my hands. So it sits in a box of unloved fragrances under my bed, and every so often I think to myself, "Surely it's not as bad as I'm remembering," and I spray it all over generously. And I am always vaguely disgusted. Thankfully, this scent truly does last all of 5 minutes before it's gone so there's no scrubbing or wardrobe changes necessary. I just wait for it to go away.

There is something I can't describe of this perfume i really do not like. Specially on MY skin. If sprayed on clothes it's very generic and will last extremely long. No notes i can notice aside from extremely generic drugstore sugary sweet scent. On my skin it smells very rancid upon minutes of spraying and it increasingly turns into a rusty metallic scent as the hours go. I DO use it for layering when perfumes are not as sweet as I would like, and I noticed these weird scent changes do not happen when layered under other fragrances. For the price point, I would suggest to try regardless if you like gourmand scents. If it doesn't work on it's own you can try layering as I did.

Plastic, stinky, headache inducing ... yucky :( Should smell good, but hurts my nose ! it lasts ok, and obviously quite cheap.

I have the perfume oil, so maybe that's effected the overall composition. Maybe. Or, maybe this is just awful. It opens up promising as a coconut cookie. Then, after an hour it dries down to a metallic scent. A scrubber. It did not get any better. I suspect, that in the perfume oil, some notes fade and others stay more prominent. I have a bunch of perfume oils and cologne. I recommend to get the cologne every time. (The perfume oil performs really well on clothes, if you don't mind putting oil on your clothing.)

3/10. it doesn't really project, if at all. it does smell good and warm though. small plastic smell and lasts about 15 minutes on me :(

What a bittersweet scent this is to me now.... Let me explain. Apart from Victoria's Secret Body Sprays, this was my first colonge. It was purchased as a gift from my half-brother (I also inherited the "Brownie" colonge from Demeter, which he gifted to my mother at the same time, but she found it to sweet so passed it on to me. I remember both scents well.) I was 7 when I went to NYC for the first time. This scent brings back a time of the magical innocence of childhood, back when I still had a good relationship with my family and half-siblings, when New York was a vibrant and exciting city. I still remember vividly that first trip to the big apple, the amazing scallion pancakes and hot pork buns at this Chinatown restaurant, the excitement of receiving this cologne, which looked so chic in the square silver-capped Demeter bottle. My half brothers wife also gave me a gift, a small all-natural scented candle in a silver bottle, "to make my hotel room smell more like home". I thought she was so exotically beautiful, and even though my parents would not allow me to light the candle, I inhaled the lily-of-the-valley like sweet scent deeply, which smelled like a beautiful greenhouse to me. "Angel Food" at that time (17 years ago now...wow) did not come in the sweet delights kitchy bottle I see displayed on Fragrantica now, but a simple square clear bottle with a white front, "Angel food" written in black along a yellow band, and of course that tall silver cap. I don't know if this has been reformulated since then, and can only review on the colonge I recieved. Like other reviews mentioned, it did have an alcoholic opening, (like many fragrances, I learned in later years of perfume collecting) however, given a few minutes to settle, morphed into a true, bakery like, delicious gourmand edible angel food cake scent. I don't remember it lasting long, about 3-4 hours, tops, but given the small purse-friendly size, I would not mind re-spritzing. Now around this time ( I remember owning this colonge until around the age of 14, when it went missing) I was reading a book called Goddess #1 Heaven Sent, by Clea Hantman, about Three Muses, Thalia, Era, and Polly who were banished to Earth by Zeus for a prank gone awry on there stepmother Hera. I don't remember much of the book now, only that I loved it as a tween (I still love Greek Mythology to this day, so no surprise there) and a certain plotline in which the Furies, jealous of the Muses, gift Thalia with a "wedding present"- a beautiful, bejeweled perfume bottle with a heavenly fragrance inside. Of course, the twist is that the perfume is really a curse waiting to be activated....but blinded by the beauty of the perfume, the Muses spritz and inhale it deeply, unaware of the agony that will follow when the curse is unleashed from this seemingly beautiful gift. Inspired by the gorgeous jeweled perfume I read about, I decided to decorate this colonge, the only one I owned and loved, with jewel-toned metallic stickers making up a mosaic like pattern of gold and silver, with a dark green star in the center. How almost prosaic then, that now I find myself at odds with my family (my half-sister turned out to my a phony, lying hypocrite and apart from that one meeting at 7 and only perhaps 3 more times I ever even saw his face my half-brother never tried to bond with me or form any real connections, which honestly hurt me deeply as a vulnerable little girl, just looking to be close to her family.) And as for his beautiful, exotic wife Tasha? A year later they had a nasty divorce. Looking back on it, I can't help but think of the irony of how much I loved this cologne, my first real grown-up scent that smelled so delicious and intoxicating, and how I decorated the bottle which such care, wanting to create a beautiful flancon like I read about in my book. And yet, just like Thalia was fooled by the perfume gifted to her by the furies, I find myself now, at 24, estranged from both my half-siblings as I cant bear to deal with there lies, manipulations, and in my half-brothers case utter lack of regard or care for me and my life. This beautiful, gourmand scent that I found so bewitching, now as I recall its scent brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes as I truly feel that it has been cursed, lulling me into a false sense of security, like the calm in the eye of a storm, just as much as my relations with my siblings have stormed and soured. I am sorry for the sad nature of this review, which is honestly a very hard one for me to write. This truly is a lovely scent, and for those without the negative associations, would surely find it sweet and comforting. But scent is so closely tied with memory and emotion to me, both the good and the heartbreaking. And unfortunately for me, I feel like inhaling this now would just bring back those memories of that lonely, rejected little girl and cause me, even after all these years, to break down and cry. 7.7/10 for the scent and silliage (very true angel-cake like foody aroma) 4/10 longevity *Please don't let my sad review stop you from trying this! Unfortunately my memories have clouded this scent for me, but this doesn't have to be the case for you. I truly hope that others can enjoy this little gem, and wear it well*

Angel Food was my first Demeter fragrance. I think most Demeters, even though they are not very complicated fragrances, turn out very different on my skin, I now started to believe that my skin and this brand are simply not compatible. It smells gorgeous from the bottle. And it smelled so great on some of my friends. On them I could smell lots of vanilla extract and coconut, which made me thing of coconut pudding, sweet, thick, rich. On me it smells like this for first 5 minutes. Afterwards, I started getting a slice of Angel Food that has spent waaaay too much time in the oven. Sweetness was gone, I was left with scent of smoke and burnt dough. Shame, since I know others were more lucky...

This has a bit of uncooked batter in the beginning and it's really delicious and mouthwatering at this stage. Once it fades it becomes less recognizable, and becomes more of a generic vanilla. Wonderful opening though, wish it had lasted. This one did not last very long -- I know this is a common problem with Demeter, but this one in particular was very short lived and became a skin scent within the hour.

Yum. My first Demeter fragrance. I wore it in grade 9 and a boy that I had a crush on ( not sure if he liked me back........but we were friends definitely) said I smelled like donuts. Ha ha. To me it just smells like clean laundry hanging on the line while someone walks by with aromatic vanilla custard and just spills it everywhere. So good...it doesn't even smell like perfume.

first one from demeter that i smelled and i hateeeee it :( the initial alcohol scent is too strong, dries off into sweet, coconut cake but it faints almost instantly. it took like 20 minutes on my skin and i couldn’t smell it at all. i would be okay with a strong alcohol start if the scent was good but... it’s underwhelming to say the least

first im smelling a weird scent like burnt sugar that whas to long on the stove. not as in caramel but really burnt.then I smell some vanilla. Its sweet but remaining that burn smell to it. So its not my type of scent

Bought this years ago and just finished it not too long ago. It faded away too quickly and always had that fake alcohol smell. My boyfriend loved it, though. All I smelled was vanilla with a hint of coconut.

This disappointed me a bit. Smells very cheap, understandable since it's cheap but the scent profile seems so simple yet it smells unwearable

Another disappointing Demeter creation. It should be called sweet rubbing alcohol because that’s how it smells.

its a cologne and they arent designed to last long...this is nice
