Dirt

I have been wearing this since - I am pretty sure the year was 1993. It does not say who the Nose to this one was but I have heard from insiders its Christopher Brocious. (I hate Perfume) . (He also created Earthworm., Tomato, etc...) I still wear it. It smells like really rich dirt with new grass after a rain. Not dirty smelling at all. Its a happy smell. Someone asked me if I took a nap outside. It lasts longer when you spray it on clothing. I like to spray fragrance on my mask but this made my lips numb right away, and my eyes very red. So no problems at all if its not near my face. On skin, its very nice. It mixes well with Jean Paul Gautier Le Male, but I have not been able to layer it with anything else. Its a one dimensional scent. The drydown is the same. A lot probably has to do with your body chemistry. I like this scent enough to wear it about 3 decades. The first time I found it was in a boutique in Athens Geprgia. I was an Angel Men fan at the time. I think before that I was a poor student and was wearing Bijan, 273 Beverly H ills, Aramis, and Old Spice. I have grown up since then...

smells and metallic wet. the bottle is a little sketchy and the perfume itself is super oily, i had a spill and the bottle is always greasy. i wore this all of freshman year of college when i was a geology major before switching to ceramics. smells so good - just like dirt but in a mineralic wet thin way if that makes sense. like the dirt around an underground vein of water. like the pottery studio - lots of sitting water and sealed bags of wet things. smells just like a new batch of reclaim - some people think its gross and must/mildewy. it smells to me like one singular note, and it fades fairly quickly. worth it, good/weird signature. the only thing is that the perfume itself is a little oily in texture - careful not to stain your clothes. it smells like wet rocks. uncomfortable a little, in a good way, like when you walk after the rain and the grass is all dewy but the hem of your pants gets a little damp. if you are an oil painter this would also smell so good on you, it has a little stuffyness that glossier you has, like pencil shavings but if it was mica crumbles instead. low low sillage.

Demeter just *gets* it, man. I love this and if you enjoy gardening or hiking, you might like it too. It's simply the smell of fresh, wet loam. Nothing dry, dusty, or sandy. This is dark topsoil, but without any stinky fertilizer/manure. I think many "earthy" scents tend to lean bitter, but this instead has more of a sweetness. (Also, I find that this scent doesn't have that... "indie" smell, iykwim.) I'm not sure if it's because I'm from Ohio and this company is based in Pennsylvania, but it smells right on the money to me - this is springtime in the midwest, pre-flowers. March, I suppose. I bought this to layer with other scents (it's linear, just straight up dirt), but there's no reason you couldn't wear it alone. If the smell of rich, dark earth intrigues you, I say pick it up. At Demeter's price points, you really can't go wrong. Like most Demeter scents, it doesn't project or last very long, but I enjoy personal skin scents, so it works for me. It's also one of their more oily formulations, in case that matters to you. tldr; It's wet, fresh, natural, and a lil bit sweet. It's f'n dirt.

I read all the reviews in Fragrantica before buying this one, most of them praising on how realistic this is, and even so when I received it I was amazed at how well Demeter managed to reproduce the smell of rain-wet earth. It's really surprising. I do love it! I like to use it when I am at home, either on cool or hot days and I also really enjoy spraying it before going to bed at night. It gives me a feeling of peace. I bought the 4 oz bottle 3 months ago and I only have a third left. I will definitely buy it again when finished. The duration is short and the projection is weak, but with the use that I give it, that is not an issue. If you enjoy the smell of wet clean soil and that is what you expect from this gem, you can safely blind buy it. I did that and I'm delighted Update: I also love it layered with other scents, mostly florals. It blends very well with Flower Show, also from Demeter and with Tous tous. I smell like a wet garden full of flowers.Nice!

If you are upset by the idea of wearing a fragrance that smells like DIRT then you have missed the point of the Demeter Fragrance Library. They are single scents that capture a moment, a place, an element or something organic. Huge fun! "Laundromat" smells like fresh laundry bouncing around in a dryer, "Creme Brulee" smells like that famous french desert and "Sex On The Beach" smells like.... ok so if you haven't experienced it then the scent may be hard to gauge. So Dirt smells like Dirt, not dirty or off but like soil. As their name suggests - 'Fragrance Library' should be collected, add them to your library of fragrances. You might keep a Gideon next to the bed but your library should be full of wonderful varied experiences to expand your mind. I recommend you mix Demeter, make your own combos. They are the closest most will get to being able to create their own scent. Birthday Cake x 2 squirts +Sex on the Beach x 2 squirts +Dirt x 1 squirt = Shagaliscious

8.5/10 Cleanist dirt smell ever. Would never wear this by itself, but it's a great layering fragrance. The top pro and con are right on the money. It's the best-smelling dirt you're going to get. But ALL Demeter fragrances are colognes, meaning that they will always be weak. But that's not what I wanted for this fragrance. One of my goals is to smell like a hermit who lives in the middle of the forest and forages for flowers and berries. How do you not smell like flowers, berries, and a forest without smelling a hint of dirt? So, to make this last longer, I spray it on my pits as an inside joke. This makes it stronger and last a few hours more. Demeter does sell lotion of all of their scents, so you can buy that if you want a stronger smell.

this is like a 'your skin but better' scent for wood nymphs and aspiring bog witches. literally wet soil. im in love. this is exactly the scent ive been searching for - photorealistic, wet, dirty, natural. projection is minimal but i think it works in favor of this scent, its subtle and gentle. weirdly musky, blends with the skin perfectly. its rather warm, despite being a 'wet soil' type of scent. there is something a little limey and juicy in the opening but it quickly goes away, and my only qualm about this perfume would be that it becomes extremely linear after like an hour and you cant really smell it unless you stick your nose right up to your skin.

I read an article about this perfume years ago, and was utterly intrigued! Although I had no idea the name really described the actual scent. It does smell like wet soil, but I really like it! But I thought no one else would like it, so I put it away. Now that I see a few other ladies here on Fragrantica actually like it, I will put it on my vanity again. The lasting power and sillage is close to zero so even though it is a unique scent, I don't think anyone will be offended. Because they probably won't be able to smell it :p I might pick up "Grass" and layer it with this one for that greenhouse effect.

Gorgeous fragrance oh my god. As a Dirt Enthusiast I'll admit this is not my favorite Type of Dirt Smell but it is an incredibly realistic Dirt Smell of another kind. Pre mixed bags of potting soil freshly hosed down in a garden center. Wet, slightly mineralic, earthy and soft. I can almost feel it in my hands all spongy and light, fertilizer beads and pearlite. Stunning. It brings me back to so many days out in the sun, hands and work jeans dirtied. While it's a fun collection addition, and I adore smelling like this, I will stick to rolling around in the dirt like a horse to achieve the effect.

This is so grounding, so calming! It is the scent of freshly-turned rich soil, after a good rain. Living in NYC, right off a major highway, I often crave the scent of the good earth. It never fails to relax me, and brings back much-loved memories of childhood summers spent upstate. And unlike most Demeters, it has actually longevity, a few hours or so. Minimum sillage, but that's fine, because I wear this strictly for me. It's a very optomistic fragrance, with the promise of new life and growth.

I may or may not have written a review before (if I have its been years). I love wearing this with FearBOOtique "Gravyard" which the notes are rose and dirt. I love this combo so much. I'm morbid and this to me is a goth perfume. very simple and unisex. the only downside is that it's kinda weak and doesn't seem to last very long on me; it also leaves a oily film which is bad for clothing but I spray it on my clothes because it doesn't last on my skin for too long

Love at first whiff: musky earthy, sweet earthy, mineralic earthy, herbal earthy, dry floral, dry woody, green stems, brown leaves. (Use a leaf blower on the front lawn of my New Jersey home and a fragrance like this eminates from the soil.) A squeeze of lemon juice, tomato leaf, some sort of woody, dirty floral (maybe ylang ylang), patchouli, mysore sandalwood, cinnamon bark. Projects well and lasts a good 16 hours on me. Clever, cozy, stylish. Just remarkable.

Not a unisex scent by far. This is purely a layering fragrance. Put on your favourite in the morning then after the drydown, maybe 1.5 hrs, add a squirt of Dirt. The combination is pure male. Keep it in your car and a top up squirt every 3 hours. Any other way of applying this just doesnt cut it. Any collection is incomplete without it. I read an earlier review asking "who would wear this?"...Clint Eastwood does, thats who. Say no more.

This is very similar to the base materials (flint and vetiver) of TDH. In fact, this could easily be layered under that fragrance to increase the mineral earthiness. Dirt smells like nutrient dense soil, put right up to your nose. I've always had an affinity for earthy scents and this is the literal epitome of that. Extremely versatile scent. This is a top 5 from Demeter for me.

just got this perfume and omg isn't it just love at first smell. i see why kate moss liked it. it's very... well. moss-y, pun intended, damp, like a rich soil with the slightest citrusy note that i felt for some reason. maybe it's just the freshness of it, but still! i feel like it will be great for fall and spring, matching the vibe of everything around you

this was one of my favorites for a long time, and my first demeter perfume. it's so minimalist and definitely unique (not everyone loves the smell of soil!) but i liked it a lot. the petrichor quality is really what makes it. layering this with florals is incredible. longevity is weak, sillage is intimate, but overall a really good and unique scent.

I LOVE IT! This is such a realistic fragrance! The wet potting soil. The projection is very poor, though once I spray it on my clothes, I can still smell it up close after hours. It is a bit sweet, yet super fresh and realistic. I'm wondering what other scents it could be perfectly layered with.

Metallic (in a fresh, not ~bloody~ way) and beets and dirt and rain! I love this scent. Not for everyone. As with most Demeter scents, the longevity on skin is poor but I’ve found that it has good staying power on clothes. Great on its own or layered. A nice pick me up. Energizing

The way a leaf covered road smells after it rains and you're the first person to walk on the path and the leaves crush under your feet. The frangrance lasts about 30 minutes, not very long. But for the short length of time it does last, its kind of a happy morale booster.

the first time i smelled this i fell in love. for me something about this scent is addicting and nostalgic. smells like wet soil, but it smells sweet. it's great for layering with clean floral perfumes and other petrichor scents.

To me this is primarily aromatic and green and herbal, almost a bit tomato-y. For people who like scents like Un Jardin Sur Le Nil. If you want true dirt then try Demeter Earthworm.

Dirt is an instant breath of fresh air. It's nostalgic, simple and beautiful. Reminds me of being a kid. I wish this lasted longer on the skin because it is so lovely.

Photorealistic smell of the damp soil. I really like it. Longevity is weak, but for me, this is more like a fragrance to sniff from a bottle than something I’d wear.

Wow,the best dirt Scent ever. I dont know what people expect but it smells like what it says. A nice wearable scent of soil, or even wet soil.

Exactly what it says on the bottle. I love it. It's my classic and my introduction to fragrances. I just wish it was stronger.

I get compliments everytime I wear this perfume. It truly smells like the (damp) dirt of the northeastern U.S.

Well, dirt has changed, that is for sure! I had a bottle around about 2008 I think, and it was very much what I would consider a dry scent. I had read the blurb about it being based on the dry red soil of Arizona (perhaps not, I'm not entirely sure, can't remember and have never been to the US to know where has dry red dirt!) Anyway, back in 2008 I had the shower gel, body lotion and the 30ml spray of dirt. And it was definitely a dry, sunbaked red dirt scent. The shower gel and lotion were actually amazingly good, I know the idea of washing with "dirt" is odd, but it was a surprisngly lovely warm, earthy scent, and layered beautifully. The perfume itself was very warm, dry, it smelled on the earth after the sun had dried it dusty. So it was somewhat a surprise when I sprayed on a sample of the current dirt yesterday to be hit with an amazingly accurate rendition of wet potting soil! This current dirt is wet, cold, it is more "soil" than dirt. If that makes sense. Where the old dirt reminded me of hot, sunbaked expanses, this new dirt brings to mind potting sheds, British soil in April, wet, moist. So yeah, a bit of a contrast when I thought I knew what to expect. This does dry down closer to the older version later on, although not quite the same, and after the initial "oh, have you been potting seedlings?" smell has lifted it is actually quite a pleasant, earthy outdoorsy type scent, that would layer well still I think. I just need to get past the shock of the opening. Personally, I think now they should rename this "soil" or "earth" as it would suit better. Longevity is not as good as it was, probably only around 2-3 hours now. Sillage is soft.

If you want to smell like you just rolled around in the mud like a pig, this is not the right scent for you. Demeter's Dirt is surprisingly clean, like fresh potting soil drenched with rainwater and sprinkled with greenery. I showed this scent to my grandfather, who is an avid gardener and typical "macho" man who believes men shouldn't wear perfumes, and he immediately laughed and said that it reminded him of gardening in the rain! This just shows how well this scent works; it's so evocative of the outdoors and surprisingly wearable. If an 80 year old who spends half his day gardening can appreciate the photorealism of this scent, I'm sure the rest of us can as well. The only complaint I have about this scent is its longevity. I wish I could smell like dirt all day, as it's quite subtle and surprisingly clean and inoffensive, but I have to reapply it every hour or so. Sometimes I layer it with other scents for added longevity. I've mixed this with Demeter's Thunderstorm and Grass, Demeter's Tomato, Apres L'Ondee from Guerlain, and some sweet scents that lacked a grounding, earthy element. But I mainly just use this scent as a form of aromatherapy to lift my spirits on days I've been depressed or indoors for too long. It makes me feel grounded again.

My dad has a beautiful garden that he treats like a second child. His gardening gloves sit in the shed, next to my rain boots. In the spring, when he puts out new soil, his gloves always smell like the deep earth. That dark brown rich dirt - with the little white pebbles in it. It's exactly that. I wore a bit of it on my wrists and it felt like I dug my arms in a compost bag before leaving for the day. In the bottle, it has a slightly sweet chemical smell, but on the dry down, it is pure dirt. Exactly what it says on the tin. Even writing this review feels a bit redundant as that's how exact the smell is. For the price, the value is absolutely there. Some downsides: There is very little longevity, and when layered with more complex fragrances the scent can become lost after a short period of time. I'm still excited to try more combinations as it does play well with other Demeter fragrances (Thunderstorm in particular.)

Actually, this is rather nice! I sniffed it recently and had no intention of posting a review BUT: I just can't let a negative review stand on the basis of the name alone! The name is perfectly descriptive; it's really the smell of soil/earth. This is DIRT, not fertilizer... there's nothing nasty or objectionable about it at all! Demeter's Dirt is the clean, refreshing fragrance of the damp ground in the late days of winter or early spring just after the frozen ground has thawed a bit. The ozonic fragrance of snow is still a bit evident in the air but something is different... the air no longer smells neutral somehow... there's a new fullness to the air that hints at the soon-to-emerge first peeks of green shoots, and perhaps some glimpses of color after weeks and months of snow and leafless branches. Demeter's Dirt smells of life and the promise of emerging growth. Surprise yourself and go find some to sniff.

Wow, this is so fun and well done! Smells juuuust like wet soil. I blind bought this thinking it was gonna smell close to dirt but it really is accurate, like shocking accurate! It also smells of fertilizer (chlorine-like), but that just makes it smell even more realistic. It has a definite wetness to it, like soil after the rain. I have no idea where I would use this though, probably gonna layer it with another scent. Longevity is non-existant on my skin (15 mins and it's totally gone), but stays longer on fabric (~1h), which is what I expected from this. The dry-down smells very good too, it doesn't turn into something else, it only looses some sharpness and rawness. Very fun scent!

My partner has this scent, and the bottle is pretty leaky. But even if it tips over and makes a bit of a puddle, that scent only lasts so long (maybe a few days?). To paint you a picture about the longetivity. A lovely scent. It's dirt! The surprise whiffs of dirt get a bit old after a few days when there's a spill (it starts bringing to mind worries about whether the space is clean), but otherwise quite nice. Yeah, it definitely doesn't last that long when sprayed on though. Maybe one or two hours? I wouldn't spend money on it, especially if there's other comparable dirt scents that last longer. But it is nice!

A friend gave me a spritz of this and it was love at first sniff. So evocative of wet dirt, it reminds me of being a child and digging for worms. Sadly I left my wormery in the sun and they all died, but either way I love this scent. Dries down kind of floral. My friend ended up giving it to me as she lives in a dark and damp flat share in London and doesn't like to be reminded of the smell of moisture so bare that it mind. I want to try Earthworm from Demeter next for a more intense mud smell.

incredibly subtle, but very pleasant! to me, certainly the rich metallic smell of wet potting soil - organic but not totally natural. i paired it with a creosote roll-on perfume meant to smell like the desert after a rain, and it left me smelling fresh and dusty gray and decomposing (positive, like dead grasses browning and drying on the hills) and a little ozonic, a small thundercloud traveling through the day!

This is the real after the rain (Après la Mousson). As if you stepped out in the after rain out of a crowded bar. You smell the moist, cleaned up streets and your alcoholic breath. Very very wearable. But I expected dirt. Is it under my shoe, too far from my nose stepping out of that bar? The bar where I hugged a girl that wore Chanel Chance Eau Fraîche? Too much ozon hanging above those clean streets.

I've read that this is/was worn by Clint Eastwood. It feels like a good fit, as this is a very direct translation of literal soil. It smells more like fresh vegetables, that almost metallic/mineral scent, than of wet, muddy soil. It's very brief, and I find it hard to combine with other scents simply because it doesn't last very long. It's either love or hate, and I find that I love it.

Literal dirt, and dry at that. The opening is sharp spicy for my nose so this isn't my fav on the line, but it is photorealistic and crisp. Strong too. I got it for fun and layering. I prefer thunderstorm which has more sophistication and richness to it. I haven't fully worn it ever, but I expect to drench myself with it once a very humid day on spring.

This is one of the first scents I ordered when I became interested in the niche and "weird". Very pretty smell. I wish it lasted longer! I made the mistake of spraying it in 100 degree TX weather, and it definitely gave an icky vibe. But in colder weather, early spring, or a rainy day, this is peak. Love the light clean effect, even though it's dirt.

This is designed for space voyagers (or city dwellers) in need of a dose of aromatic soil or loam. It smells like the real thing and is lovely. I layer it with Miller Harris Figue Amere for more complexity, or Demeter's Sandalwood for warmth. It has a touch of fir tree and mushrooms, and it is a private joy (does not seem to have tremendous sillage).

very dusty, fragrant earthy smell. i don’t get wet dirt at all, it’s a very dry smell—like old potting soil, or dirt baking in the summertime heat. evokes memories of midafternoon gardening and dirt under your nails. it’s great for layering. sometimes, i like to layer it with demeter’s funeral home for a gothic graveyard/burial association.

I was looking for a dirt fragrance more of a red clay/terra cotta type scent.This fragrance was a little different than that. It's much more of a muddy loam scent. That being said, it's highly accurate, and I think geophagist around the globe would rejoice if they experienced this scent. Anyone would recognize this as a dirt scent.

Yep, smells like rich dark potting soil with a hint of fungus! Not like the red clay by my house but more like the loose black soil by old houses. My house is Victorian but there had been some work done in the past, tilling up the thick red clay which smells different. I do some metal detecting and gardening so I know my dirt!

smells like......dirt. in a sweet fragrant-y way. I layer this with a rose floral. The goal? To smell like a rose bush. Good but maybe wouldn't wear it alone. I recommend to layer with floral note of your choice to smell like your favorite plant. If you're expecting anything green about this fragrance I wouldn't recommend.

Tried this on in the store. Immediately very earthy..dirt is definitely what it smells like. After around 10 minutes it developed a strange fertilizer kind of smell..that faded after a few minutes. Now it smells like wet dirt! It's great. It smells like dirt. Thats all I can say lol Will have to purchase

I love Dirt! Like others have said, it smells just like potting soil. I sometimes mix it with Michael by Michael Kors. It doesn't ground the fragrance (har har), but it roughs it up a bit--which I like on occasion. The only complaint I have about Demeter fragrances is that they last about 5 minutes.

I love to layer it with woody/green herbal fregrences, it makes something like hermes h24 so much more interesting and deep, wearing this thing on its own makes no sense at all, rn i have 15 ml tester but its running low, im prolly not gonna buy full bottle 8/10 Def gonna buy some more testers

I'm amazed by the fact that this really smells like dirt. Not dirt as in gross dirt, but dirt as in warm soil, or a dusty road. This is a lovely scent to pair up with others! Kicking some craziness into cleaner scents. No wonder Clint Eastwood wears this!
