Firefly

It's a humid summer night in the midwest, and you are barefoot in the grass catching lightning bugs. The honeysuckle bushes are blooming and you had corn on the cob for dinner. Dad mowed the lawn this afternoon but oh no - you just stepped into that grassless patch of dirt in the yard - you know the one - and now there's mud squishing in between your toes. You take one more look at the big dipper before mom calls you inside to bed. Yeah, this is my favorite scent from Demeter, and one of my across-the-board favorites. Nothing traditionally "perfumey" about it. It's soft and earthy and wet. It's dirt and grass and moss. It's comfortable, nighttime summer air. It's weird, but in a gentle way. If you're a crunchy hippie or someone who isn't really into the whole perfume thing, you might like this. But you're not reading this review, because you're still outside catching bugs. Oh well. EDIT: I bought a new bottle of this, and either the formula is different or my old bottle is so old that the perfume has changed over the years. The new bottle smells less complicated - it's mostly wet grass and less of the air/dirt/moss/rocks. Having said that, I still love the shit out of it. I layer it with almost everything in the spring and summer.

I'm glad to see this has been added to the database. I absolutely love this one. It smells like the area (Northeast US) I live in in the spring after a bit of rain. I've literally walked through the woods and went "whoa! it smells like firefly!" I love this at bed time, for me it is so comforting. Reminds me of camping as a child. It smells like wet grass, a little bit of a moldy smell, cool watery air, very fresh, and just a tad of a wet wood smell. It opens with a moldy blast, which tones down very quickly to a wet, almost sweet grassy scent. The drydown loses the wetness but keeps the sweetness of grass and a dash of decaying wood. Love it! Very unique, and I will be buying more soon. This one seems to be good year round, but might be best suited to the late winter and into spring when things are melting and have that cold, wet almost rank smell. I highly recommend.

I love it so dearly .... it smells exactly like a pile of watery fresh grass clippings after a tropical rain, Mmmh its lovely... now i must say and warn (as a girl who was looking for a purely unisex - not masculine scent) , this fragrance does open a little more on a masculine side at first (like an undertone of men's cologne ) but after a few minutes to me it turns neutral ... so i would recommend if somebody is buying it for the firs time that you spray it once and let it macerate for a few days before using it...... P.S. If some one was wondering what type of grass its smell like exactly, to my nose its perhaps more closely to the smell of zoysia grass rather than a tall wild grass.

If there's one thing that demeter does well it's the earthy more natural scents. Firefly has elements of both demeter dirt, and some of their grassier scents. Like many of these earthier scents they are not to everyone's tastes and work well layered. For some reason, before I bought this I had a slightly smokier/incense scent in my head. Not as a dominant fragrance, but something lingering to give a mystical feel. Now that it's arrived it is pure dirt/garden/moss, which I guess is what I paid for at the end of the day. I am curious how this scent might layer with something like myrrh.

One of the best Demeters...which tend to be one-note and not very dynamic, but this one is...really takes you to a summer night complete with grass, dirt and a tiny bit of crispness in the air...Demeter offers all their scents in more than just perfume, as I have this both in the perfume and the room spray...an instant pick me up...

This literally smells like it’s 8:00pm in a mid Atlantic grassy soccer field, with the sun down and glowing and a bunch of fireflies everywhere after there was a brief drizzle.

I had been meaning to buy a bottle of this stuff for years. The description made it sound very inviting. So does it deliver? Well yes, I think so. While some have described Demeter scents as being very linear, I found this scent to go through a few stages. The top accords are very much sweet grass and wet soil. After a few minutes I notice the scent on my skin become soapy while retaining hints of wet grass and dirt. There is a moment after about an hour of having it on the skin where all these accords intertwine in a way that brings back vague memories of a holiday park I had visited during spring as a child. There’s the subtle steaminess of the ground lit by the late afternoon sun combined with the freshly cleaned and dried clothes from the holiday park laundromat. A little later the base of the scent becomes more pronounced and it takes on a more ‘humid’ character, as though the scent itself was trying to mimic the change from day to dusk. That moment fades and I am left with a generic cologne smell, ambiguous but familiar. All in all, it is an interesting scent.

I use Firefly as a pillow spray and it immediately transforms my bed into a fresh, familiar, clean camping tent that is set up on top of freshly mowed sweet grass, or a meadow after the rain. It is watery and has a complexity that takes me back to summers in the NC mountains...with the windows down, a slight cool breeze that recalls the sweet summer air straight from my memory. Firefly taps into my inner child, days spent running through fields and nights catching fireflies. For me, it’s perfect to cuddle up to and takes me far away from the urban hustle that surrounds my current reality to the realm of my dreams where I am sleeping under the stars next to a chuckling creek in a pasture peppered with wildflowers. I love it. It is optimistic, and reminiscent of a healthy and loved Earth.

My best friend's house was right by a golf course growing up. This smells exactly like all of us sneaking out to play on the golf course on hot summer nights...It's hot and humid, and we're barefoot. We're sweaty, but it feels so nice when we catch a breeze. They mowed earlier that day, and you can still smell it. We're catching fireflies, playing flashlight tag, sitting by the pond and making up constellations. We'd walk back to her house through the woods so we wouldn't get caught by the night guard, who knew we were there but let us have our fun. It's a little sweet too, like coming home and drinking sweet tea. Pretty long lasting for Demeter! You can get a couple hours out of this.

When I’ve bought this frag I was pretty excited, and still I am! I own it as an oil roller, tho. I still can’t decide is it light or dark and this fact irritates me a bit : D Firefly really sounds like you’re walking by the outer wood at the edge of the night while there’s first dew appearing on the broken grass stalks. It has fresh condensate in the air, like from sprinkler in the parks do over the cut grass. But it really has an aura of small sparks in the dark air. I’d never find any more fitting name for this frag.

I smell some grass, but I smell indistinct flowers and wet dirt even more - this is a good thing for me!! I find Firefly to be very pleasant. To me, it doesn’t smell at all like Thunderstorm from the same brand - Thunderstorm has a generic men’s cologne feel to it. Firefly actually smells like being out in nature after a short rain, or maybe even right before the storm. Of course, longevity is unfortunately horrible, but at least the fragrance is great while it is around.

As a Demeter fragrance this is not supposed to be a perfume but to evoke the memory of a feeling or place. Firefly does exactly that, from the moment I spray it it gives me an earthy, wet, grassy, almost juicy impression of what a summer night smells like. Blind buy. Straight from the bottle (I have the splash) this is a pungeant, grass and mold smell that made me instantly regret my purchase. Thankfully, once dried on the skin, "Firefly" is soft and sweet. An impression of walking through wet grass at night. While I enjoy this long-lasting fragrance at home, I haven't tested people's reactions yet. I don't know when to wear this. Maybe I'll try layering to be safe...

Opens with rain soaked grass. Cool, aquatic, dry green. Nostalgic petrichor. A blue note builds and bullies the nature element into submission. The slight green edge remains and helps balance, but you can’t apply enough for anyone to smell. One of Demeter’s weaker performers (which is especially bad), but provides a little personal enjoyment. It’d seem impossible to capture the name, but it is evocative.

This has something which reminds me of CK2, my all time favorite. This wet dust smell... CK2 is of course a much more layered, rich fragrance, brilliant and deep. This one is cooler with its pleasant grass note. Rather simple and weak but still quite interesting, nice cologne.

This is basically Thunderstorm if it was a little greener and had less longetivity. This disappeared from my skin in less than an hour after spraying it. I do like how it reminds me of freshly mowed grass and bug spray, it’s a nostalgic scent, just wish it lasted longer.

initially it has more of a freshly cut grass smell, but after a while it evolves into the suffocating smell you get after a brief rain on a very, very hot summer day. doesnt last long, because its demeter, but worth getting a small bottle of if it interests you!

Sitting on the porch, many summers gone by, at dusk. The fireflies come out. Wonderfully nostalgic of upstate New York, when I was young teen, and all things seemed possible, with hopes and dreams ahead of me. So nostalgic this sometimes makes me cry.

This is the first Demeter fragrance I’ve truly been impressed by. It smells like a drugstore men’s cologne somehow managed to capture the scent of fresh air and damp earth on that first warm spring day. Lovely!

Grass and wet asphalt. I never wear this, but it's fun to spray it on a pillowcase and dream about being a kid playing in the park

Thunderstorm but a bit more grassy-er. I waited for it to evolve but it didn't it just stayed grassy. But it's better grass scent than the "grass" bottle they have. It's a bit on the fresh side.

Wet grass and dirt. More dirt than it is green. Fresh, too - probably because the grass is wet. Pairs beautifully with Thunderstorm to make an atmospheric after-the-rain scent.

I like grass.. but this?? This smells like someone threw up in their backyard in the rain. Like the “vomit” jelly bean from the bean boozled challenge. Not a safe blind buy, but unique for sure.

I get grass and Irish spring soap. This reminds me of a less risky snowy owl by zoologist as well.

This one is linear, so not much discussion possible about opening, mid, dry down. For me I do not catch green at all. I sense orris as a note, and that gives it a flat ozonic feel, that is definitely reminiscent of a summer night. There’s also a dirty earthiness that grounds it in a good way. But there is something almost blood-like as well, that brings a sense of uncomfortable mineral-warmth. So, I want to like this one, oh do I want to like it - but it’s just not for me. For an ozonic fragrance that reminds me of a summer evening, I will stick with my Kiton Men edt.

Takes me back to that cool summer night on the East coast. Barefoot on the grass in the dark. Watching fireflies for the first time. Tiny sprites winking in the black. Swirling gently on upcurrents of air as the earth beneath our feet released the warmth it gathered during daylight. Magical. I think he still loved me then. UPDATE Decluttering from my collection. It's a nice scent. Cool and triggering. I just don't want to keep that memory anymore.

I have the roll-on oil version. Sniffing the applicator, it smells exactly like wet grass and dirt. But when I put it on my skin chemistry changes it to that generic ocean smell in lots of cheap men's body wash. I still like ocean smell, but I wanted to smell like playing in the backyard in my parent's house growing up after a rain. And I would if it weren't for my skin.

I have the roll on version of this one. I love the smell, its unique and right up my alley. It smells like huddling under a toadstool during a rainy night in spring. Biggest complaint is that, like most demeter frangrances, it lasts for .5 seconds and then fades away. That is very disappointing to me, so I dont really recommend it.

i can practically hear the hear the laughter of children running through the cool grass, as streetlamps flicker on, and the mournful humming of cicadas gives way to a chorus of crickets, and the last skirts of daylight gather up their folds and depart for the distant horizon ...

I wouldn't wear this, but I smell it every now and again just to enjoy it. It's like a humid mid-summer night. I used to keep fireflies in jars in my room for a night when I was a kid, and this doesn't smell too far off (but in a good way, I swear). Unisex all the way.

Such a comforting scent that smells of summer nights when I was a carefree child - I douse my pillows at night with it, before crawling in bed. Once I'm up the next day, I still still get wafts of it throughout the morning if I don't wash my hair. So lovely.

Definitely smells like being outside at night. Grass, dirt, cool notes like air. It gets a little perfume-y on dry down, but overall, it's a really great mood scent. I love this one. Lasts about four hours if you REALLY soak your wrist

After drydown it smells somewhere between the air after a spring rain and the freshness of the great outdoors on the skin. Mix with demeter dirt for an added outdoorsy skin scent! Divine! ✨

It’s definitely a “mood” scent. I would not wear it outside but when home and suddenly want to smell freshly cut grass, then I’ll use it. It doesn’t last long, maybe just one hour.

Dewy grass and a hint of evergreen. Cool, crisp, and surprisingly comforting.
