I recently discovered Demeter Fragrance Library through Fragrantica. I thought several of the scents looked nice so I ordered a few of the half ounce purse sprays to try them out. Along with my order they included a 'freebie'. I thought it would be something like an emery board or something else kind of small and cheap with their brand on it. Boy was I wrong. They sent me a full one ounce bottle of Fireplace. I like smokey scents and I like fireplaces but I wasn't sure how this would actually smell because a number of Demeter scents are really, really literal and I wasn't sure if I wanted to literally smell like a fireplace. I waited until I had a free evening at home and used a fairly conservative small spritz. The first level of scent is VERY smoky. There's even a hint of smoked sausage to it. Its rather in-your-face with the smoky-alcohol blast. I wasn't sure if I would be a fan. However if Fragrantica has taught me anything about wearing fragrance it is to wait for the dry-down. so I waited. The smoky food element lasted about 10-15 minutes and then the scent began to show its true form. After about half an hour the woody elements start to really show and then the warm spices come out. Delicious! There's still smoke, no doubt about that, but it is beautifully balanced by the wood and spice. As I write I have been wearing this for an hour and a half and I can't stop sniffing my wrist. It is gorgeous. There's nothing sweet or floral in here so if you want a more traditional scent this is not for you. If you want a feminine scent, this is not for you. However if you want to wear something a bit unusual, warm and spicy you should give this a try. This might be too heavy for warm, humid weather but in the cool autumn weather we are currently having it is perfect. I expect it will do equally well in the winter. The only drawback I have found so far is that, like all Demeter scents apparently, the longevity isn't great. This does seem to have better longevity than others but based on previous experience with it, I will have to reapply it in 3-4 hours.

Wow, what an amazing tool to have in your arsenal! I bought Fireplace with pretty low expectations, looking for something to give an edge to some of my unsuccessful blind buys like Tom Ford Noir Extreme and I expected something pretty synthetic. Yes, it’s ashy but to my nose, an incredibly high quality ashy smoke note. It immediately reminded me of the smoke note in Tobacco Oud Intense. Warm, comforting and challengingly acrid, I definitely endorse its use as a layering tool but it definitely would be harder to wear on its own.

An incredibly dirty, soot caked, old brick fireplace. Dusted with gritty brick chips from char and long slow decay. The woods are so thick and heavy with a bite of spice to them. A good balance between aromatic smoke and raw, freshly sawn firewood. There is a bit of a savory note when it's dry. Luckily not too pronounced or out of place. Really beautiful fragrance. I've seen some layering combos in the reviews that I'm excited to try as well as wearing this by itself on cold winter nights.

Wow! Much stronger smelling than many Demeters. This is what I wanted Bonfire to be. Strip away the maple leaves and chestnut sweetness, and there is Fireplace. Scorched hard woods, the black char creeping up the inside of a brick flue, swirls of smoke rising from still glowing embers. I have the oil, which lasts longer and has a more intimate sillage than sprays. This is perfect for layering.

Sharp, ashy. Not mellow smokey like Feu De Bois (my original hope). I would never wear this alone, but it's an amazing tool for layering. It adds edge to things that are too clean, it butches up unisex scents that are a little sweet, and makes a lot of scents more night friendly. Use a light hand, it gets acrid and overpowering really fast.

At first spray: allspice berries, followed by cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, over a smokey-woody base of guaiacol or birch tar, mixed woods. Simple and very nice, reminding me of simmering spices atop a wood cook-stove in winter during the holidays.

My husband wears this, and I love it on him - wouldnt market as unisex though, as definitely very masculine. Very warm, spicy and cosy to cuddle into. Good longevity with medium sillage, which is exactly how I like it.

One of my favourites: it's so calming scent of burning wood, oily and smoky at the same time. It's fantastically fits summer nights, and, I suppose, it would be my N1 in autumn and winter.

It smells like church which I love!

As much as I love By the Fireplace, I have always thought that if it's missing anything, it's even smokier woods. This fragrance here is the perfect layering agent to combine with BTF. It is photorealistic, and after testing multiple Demeter fragrances I can say this was the one that best captured its titular essence. Like BTF but to a fraction of a degree, my nose also detects a slight sweetness and almost a cinnamon quality to the woods.

While never one to sit around a fireplace, any season, I would not wear this alone but, it does evoke that fireplace feeling. As I wrote in my comments on Blue Spruce, this shines best when LAYERED with the scents that evoke winter reminders, Snow and Blue Spruce. Depending on your chemistry, I can't see wearing it alone but, I wouldn't disparage someone who does.

SEXY. This is so cozy yet has an element of woods that make it masculine yet infinitely wearable. Demeter scents always stay close to my skin and are perfect for mixing with others or just to wear and enjoy for yourself when you feel like something different or want to smell your writsts while you are on the computer! :) I love it! At first this opens up very smoky, as you would expect. It is not the most obvious choice of perfume, but it wears down really nice. I bought this to combine with more feminine scents, to create interesting mixes. I am now wearing it combined with Library of Fragrance's sunshine, and it definitely complements both scents.

I like it. Smells like Demeter Bonfire only softer, woodier, and with some spice. It's sweeter and more perfume-y and less leafy. It's a comfort scent and absolutely wearable! fall/winter

A very meaty, spicy smell to this smoke scent. A lot to get used to, but I don't hate it. I have it in the roll-on perfume oil so it will probably be better layered with something else.

Wet ashes from a pine fire and a bit of earth mixed in. Devine. I am still sniffing my now empty bottle :(

Oh, I like how dirty it is. It’s different, but not off putting. Tangy, metallic, but intriguing. Doesn’t smell like fire/wood, but is rustic with clove. The smokey element is reminiscent of smoldering coals. A warm note builds while maintaining tobacco sweetness. Similar experience to oud fragrances. Sultry, but dirty. Lasts longer than most Demeters.

I swear to God in the opening I caught a whiff of barbecue and the dry down is just smokey pot.....just who in the world wants to smell like this....very intresting. And on top of that they gave me the oil roll on version.......sigh

An acrid scent of smoke and ashes. Highly impressive in terms of accuracy, but not something I'm interested in wearing. There is a very slight spicy undertone that smells promising in the bottle, but unfortunately it evaporates from my skin, leaving me with nothing but smoke and ash. Consequently, the longer I wore this, the less I liked it. (I lasted about an hour before surrendering. Your mileage may vary.) I got a sample of Fireplace to see how it compares to Bonfire (which I do wear) and the answer is...it's colder. Bonfire smells like wood and leaves actively burning. Fireplace is what's left after the fire — smoke in your clothes, and cold ashes on the hearth. It also lingers much longer than most Demeters. Even after washing, there's a persistent trace left behind. Incidentally, I also got Chai Tea with this Demeter order, and to me the Chai smells much more like what the positive reviews led me to expect from Fireplace.

This is not a warm, cosy, burnt smell like by the fireplace- so do not buy this thinking you’ll get a cheaper alternative. This is strong soot and ash, it reminds me of an ashtray in all honesty. Sadly with my chemistry I don’t get the warm spice or cosy notes others refer to at all. The only way I can remotely enjoy wearing this is by layering with more gourmand scents (light on the fireplace, heavier on the gourmand).

Starts with nice woody notes but quickly turns out to be kinda sweet, sugary mostly due to dominant cloves -which I can not associate with the fireplace concept. I didn't like the drydown and the overall composition. Kinda unpleasant woody-sugary but not woody-smoky like its name evokes. Yes, one can associate it with dental clinic because it just smells cloves which is a mainly used ingredient in dentistry.

Why is it you find something that utterly turns your stomach, and no matter how many times you wash and scrub it stays. I cannot believe the positive feedback for it, trust me you don't want to buy this without trying it first, it is gut wrenching, vile and sadly lasts and lasts and projects pretty big. Once again from Demeter I ask who, where and why. Minging 0/10

Demeter has almost only disappointed me. This one is kinda an exception. I don't like the scent, but it actually is fairly close to an actual fireplace at least. But I also detect some burned ginger bread. Not sexy at all. But kinda cozy.

Should be called last years fireplace - soot, ash and mindewed wood notes. Bit of cinnamon.also get a stone note like how hot river rocks smell ⛤⛤

Somehow it's always the Demeter frags I hate the most that have any longevity. This is almost exclusively acrid pine tar, with a hint of vanilla candle, mesquite wood, and bug spray. It was not any more tolerable after drydown. This one is not for me, sorry.

VERY smoky. Also why does it smell like burning hot dogs??? 😭

After a brief test in a local shop, I was amazed to experience how subtly pleasant and wearable this particular blend is. So much so, I bought it instantly. It is exactly what it says on the bottle with all the comforting memories of my youth when snuggled around a real fireplace with my family in the colder winter months. 10/10 for creativity and quality.

This one is pretty good for a scent that aims to be pure smoke—not perfect, but pretty good. There's sort of a slightly sweet, almost spicy undertone that kind of ruins the complete realism to me, so to speak, but it definitely evokes the right vibe. As with a lot of Demeters, probably not for wearing alone, but works well when layered.

A warm, comforting smell, like lingering smoke from a campfire. Has much better staying power than many Demeters, great for Autumn/Winter. If you like more gourmand fragrances try layering with Demeter Marshmallow for a toasted s'mores round the campfire scent!

this thing just smelles sour, medicinal and ashtray like. There is absolutly no resemblence of burning wood whatsoever. I also ordered grass which is very impressive and really really close to fresh cut grass. Just skip ocer this one, it is complete trash

Smells smokey certainly but more like a snuffed out candle than an actual wood fire, interesting though, I'm hoping it'll be good for layering. Others have mentioned cloves. I've not found them yet... :/

It kinda smells like a dental clinic on me, which is something I love but might be weird to other people.
