This Is Not A Pipe

[NOV. 2023] Boozy cherry tobacco with a hint of cola fizz. And only for $32AUD! This is what I've been looking for in a tobacco fragrance, something with both smokiness and sweetness and similar to Tobacco Oud. But first off, don't buy a Demeter fragrance expecting the same showstopping performance of a $320 Tom Ford. I'm just saying that the scent profile shares similar qualities, being a sweet-smokey cherry tobacco scent. But for its limited range considering its price, Demeter nails the *impression* of what a cherry tobacco smells like. Good blind buy, moreso than Tomato by Demeter and that was already a great green fragrance. Performance is better than usual from a Demeter thanks to its deeper, warmer base notes. Which is, to say, it performs moderately and requires 3 spritz to be noticeable from an arms distance, sprayed neck and wrists. And then you'd need to spray again after it dries down on the same areas to make the scent trail last, in projection. A Tom Ford only needs one, and very little at that. In fact, if you really want something noticeable by others, just get the Tobacco Vanille body spray for $110AUD. A can of a Tom Ford body spray, in quantity, lasts up to a year. But this $32 fragrance is more than enough tobacco for me. This is not a pipe indeed. 👍 EDIT: The drydown smells a bit like cherry-barbecue! Funny.

I have sprayed this for the first time 5mins ago. At first sniff I was unsure if I liked it or not, it was slightly offensive. It however developed quickly into a natural pipe tobacco smell. I am non a smoker, however, I briefly toyed with a smoking pipe and it does smell a lot like pipe tobacco with a hint of that burnt wood smell from the pipe itself. Like many of demeters scents, I would suggest layering this with other fragrances. I am currently wearing spicebomb extreme, and I think this is a great way to butch-up sweeter scents. I would also consider pairing this with something fruity. If you like tobacco then you need to buy this. It is quite different from other tobaccos I've smelt. It's pushing the masculine woody side of the spectrum where many designer fragrances are scared to tread these days.

....well??? Even though I don't smoke, but have been around those that do, this is undeniably an authentic tobacco pipe that is sweet-bias but not in a cloying/overbearing way, and not really like burnt cigarette butt either. Usually from Demeter products don't have great longevity, but on paper it lasts quite a while (even though after some few hours it becomes somewhat a skin scent, but even after a day, the scent profile is not abated. Given the typical rep of having perfumes with poor longevity, this was probably just a casualty of the ingredients. Even so, insane value for what you get.

I've dreamt about quite tobacco scent as I used to smoke pipe but had to stop smoking at all. And this perfume made my dream come true. It's quite precise aromatic pipe tobacco with hint of cherry brandy.

This is a really good scent, I can picture being in front of a fireplace in a cabin in the snow wearing something like this

I came to this fragrance after something of an odyssey. I stumbled on the tobacco note in perfumes such as Pavillon Rouge and Horizon, and came to realise its huge nostalgic pull: a hazy childhood memory of idealised cosiness around elderly relatives and neighbours. I'm fully aware that there is nothing romantic about tobacco-addiction (and pollution), but the dry, pungent and smoky scent of botanical tobacco seems to have a primitive appeal to me As I explore the world of fragrances I am on the look-out for The Perfect Tobacco Fragrance (as if it could ever exist!) Then I found Demeter's This Is Not A Pipe, which, as well as having a pleasingly surrealistic title, succeeds in capturing the perfect realistic tobacco solo note. I doubt I will wear it on its own, but I've already used it alongside Velute de Tobacco, to boost the tobacco quotient in what I found to be an otherwise tobacco-starved fragrance. I'll keep this cheap and cheerful concoction to hand, to act as an olfactory complement to other fragrances. I'd be interested to hear if other Fragrantica members have done the same.

This smells just like my great grandpa's collection of pipes that I played with as a kid. I bought it to spray on my boyfriend and it smells great on him, but it definitely fades to a more sweet, lighly vanilla smell after a couple hours. I would call it a "unisex" scent, as it has that sweeter note to it to balance it out. Very comforting. To me it has masculine associations, but it smelled good on me, too, and I'm 100% Lady. ;)

Smells like a bag of pipe tobacco in a wildfire. Decisively masculine and mature. While I like this quite a bit, it’s lacking in sweetness. The performance is also lacking, but the affordability makes up for it. Smells the exact same as their “pipe tobacco” fragrance.

Smells like a freshly opened pack of cigarettes or a bag of tobacco but in a good way. The dry-down is sweet. It's not for everybody but I find this smell super comforting.

bought as a gift for a smoker, super strong but definitely a very accurate tobacco smell. has a lighter note kind of like cinnamon. use sparingly

The dry-down is okay. It's a slightly sweet, uncomplicated, tobacco with a hint of cherry. But to get to that dry-down, you have to endure well over an hour of smelling like a pile of wet diapers. This was a blind-buy for me and I'm so glad it was a cheapie. I really wanted to like this but it doesn't work for me.

Smells exactly like Jim Beam barbecue sauce #7! Ha ha wow incredibly weird.

I'm unfamiliar with the smell of an old pipe, so I can't say whether this smell like one or not, but it definitely does not smell like what I was hoping for... Which was pretty much tobacco and camp fire residue. I'm not picking up any tobacco or smoky scents from this. I think it smells more like cloves - sweet, warm, spicy. It's not unpleasant, just not what I wanted.

Update: This has since become my husband's goto signature scent, and that is saying a lot, because he isn't a cologne kind of guy. I wish he was, but this smells ridculously cozy and warm on him, and is great for his everyday wardrobe without being overbearing. It has a simple, linear progression, smelling like exactly like my initial impression of pipe tobacco and cedar. I do wonder, has anyone compared this side by side with Maison Martin Margiela's Replica Jazz Club? That seems the same vein, but without an option to test, I can't bring myself to pay for a bottle of that when this is soo much more affordable. Original: Nice blend of sweet tobacco and cedar. Smells really nice on the husband, but probably a bit too masculine for me.

I find this to be a very sweet nostalgic vintage tobacco smell. Like a memory of someone's pipe - its lovely .I didn't get any BBQ vibes as someone else did, in fact I would like a little more smoke in it. But I enjoyed it - and when I let friends smell it, they all have a fond memory of a relative who smoked a pipe. That said, I prefer Demeter's Humidor for a more elegant and interesting tobacco smell.

I love layering this with AdP Colonia Leather. It tames the leather which can be a bit overpowering and brings out the citrusy top notes. The leather and woody notes in the latter in turn curb the sweetness of the tobacco, accentuate the booziness and lends an overall drier, fuller scent. I’d be interested to see how it gets on with Tuscan Leather.

Reminds me almost exactly of Lapsang Souchong tea, smoky but not in a tobacco way. A bit too BBQ in with the smoke to smell like tobacco to me, no cherry fruitness to the composition. I should have gone with one of their other tobaccos, but the art history joke won me over.

Very good! I'm not sure if it smells like tobacco; probably not exactly - there is smokiness definitely but it's too "perfumy". Smells like church plus a hint of retro male eau de cologne to me. It's not something to wear out probably but is an enjoyable scent.

Smells like piss, I’m not kidding, just straight up hot piss.
