Thunderstorm

The main effect is a cold gust of air. That wind that has that heavy smell of rain that split second before the droplets hit the sidewalk outside your house. Some distinctly green, vine-y notes and some dirt - the carefully manicured potting soil variety - live on the outskirts of this fragrance as well. But the core of it, the resounding, full, predominant middle note, is that delicious, freezing cold air. It's both pleasantly distinct and appropriately muffled for something that lives in the generally photorealistic category. Nothing like an extremely synthetic 90's masculine ozonic note, for example, and yet enough flair to exist in a more romantic olfactory space. An impression rather than a detailed recreation. Really beautiful work. Demeter gets a lot of flack for poor longevity, and while this does vanish on skin fairly quickly on it's own, when sprayed on clothes will last for hours. Has a laundry detergent energy, if a Tide added a petrichor note to a fresh scented product. I never layer fragrances. I usually find it to be a disgusting practice (not to mention extreme attention seeking behavior). But the second I smelled this, I knew this was the missing piece I wanted from the brilliant Coven by Andrea Maack. Do not get me wrong, I fucking love that perfume on its own. It's a cult classic for a reason. But sometimes, I want it to be just slightly colder and more watery. Combined with Thunderstorm, it opens up. You're no longer in a mossy enclosed part of an ancient forest, you've wandered into the Scottish highlands. When you spray them in quick succession the notes in Thunderstorm seem to linger for a little while longer. Try the combination. You won't regret it.

Some people don't, but I find Thunderstorm totally wearable. I never got to layer it over a "real" scent, but rather have worn it pure. Sure, it's not the usual perfume, but it works and is unusual enough to set you apart, without offending other people's noses. Actually, it's pleasant and I'd keep sniffing all day long. It makes little sense to speak of notes here, but anyway. It's the smell of rain on wet soil. Those first rains after a dry season, a smell I'm very used to, living in the Brazilian Cerrado ecosystem. To make it more vivid, it smells like the kind of dumpy earth or root flour we use to grow ferns. Think earthy, mineral. Absolutely delicious. It really feels like the weather is cooling. So, maybe some of you are in the quest for the perfect rain scent. At first I thought that Demeter's Dirt would have this smell, and blind bought it. And got disappointed. Dirt is more of a very red, iron rich soil, with sweet undertones, not really wet, but drying, soil. If you want that refreshing rain, if you want that recently soaked soil with its mineral contents coming up, go for Thunderstorm.

Smells like a puddle of rainwater on it's opening, not kidding. I literally got so excited just cracking open the bottle and catching a whiff. Omfg. I smell dirt. I don't know how people are getting grass from this, it's so dirt, in a good way. This is exactly what I was praying for when I ordered from demeter, and the way it blends with my skin overtime is SO good. It has this beautiful ozonic element to it, for sure. At first, it's really, really close to what it smells like when it's about to rain on a summer/spring morning. It settles sweeter into my skin, like a flower or natural skin-sweetness. Like genuinely I'm extraordinarily happy with this. I also ordered wet garden (too floral/grandma/room spray to me,) and swimming pool (very pleasant but not that aquatic,) and this is the winner. So petrichor, so gentle, so airy, so water-puddle-skin-dirt-rain. I will be going back to demeter to order rain, snow, frozen pond, and maybe petrichor soon. Update: Layering this with any of my perfumes is incredible. Daisy Eau so Fresh (my signature) plus this is genuinely intoxicating to me.

This is a smell that immediately triggers individual memories & associations. To me it's a very appealing natural scent. Living in the city, I often long for the countryside. "Thunderstorm" gives me rain, thunder & the northern wilderness. It's just after the rain, when the sun hits again. Its ozonic, green & earthy, with a slightly metallic tone that makes you think of lightning for some reason. It also makes me think of ghost stories. The longevity is what you expect from a not so pricey eau de cologne - only about 2-3 hours, although it does surprise me & pops up a lot longer than that. Silage is moderate. This is truly a perfume you use for yourself, because it takes you places in your mind - like a private little world. When I want this to be even greener I combine it with Demeters "4 leaf clover", which go perfectly together. If you can't find this scent is any way nostalgic, appealing nor connected to any personal memories I can just conclude that you probably live in a too sunny non rainy a country. Sorry. :D

Holy wow! Thunderstorm smells like wet trees - bark and foliage - as well as wet dirt. Demeter fully recreated the scent of a rainstorm in a forest with this one, the scent of a primordial rain. I think of Thunderstorm as recreating the Garden of Eden on the cusp. Pure, innocent, green, and clean. Not a flower or fruit tree in bloom. Then the garden grew heavy with overripe flowers and fruit, and the serpent appeared. (Hisssss. OH! Cacharel Eden, there you are, my good ole frenemy. You tempt me always despite your air of decay. Sigh. The beginning of the end.) Thunderstorm has definite melon and patch notes to me, recreating a wet, earthy garden, minus the rotting floral notes which are the source of my constant conflict with Eden. Thunderstorm is simpler and easier to love. Not a drop of sin in the air.

Another wonderful atmospheric scent from Demeter. Not your typical "Perfume" with a capital P - no florals, no fruits, no spice, no musk. It is an attempt to capture the literal smell of a Thunderstorm. Most of Demeter's fragrances are skin scents and Thunderstorm is no exception (maybe even more subtle than most?). It's ozonic, airy, watery, and a little... dusty? It's very similar to Firefly - they both have that distinct wet dirt smell - but Firefly has an earthy grass note that this doesn't, and this has a sharper top note that Firefly doesn't. Truly agender. It's weird and comforting. I like wearing this on overcast days with a big sweater, and reapplying at night makes it even better (just as a nighttime rainstorm is better than a daytime rainstorm). Perfect for nerdy contrarians.

Demeter's Thunderstorm evokes a particular atmosphere, somewhere in between the damp and misty dawn of Seattle's unnamed forest, to the emerald hills near the coast of peripheral Hong Kong. Embedded within itself a kind of nostalgia that is piercing yet foggy. This is a chemical smell in the most natural way. Earthy and fresh, with a trace of woodiness. This is the forest edge, spontaneous ecotone zones between trees and meadows. Imagery: agile and dynamic, she was the daughter of forest. With her sprint, unruly red hair and bow...That is to say, before industrialisation took it all away. Serious longitivtiy issues, and Thunderstorm is playing a " hide and seek" with me regarding sillage during its short lifespan. 6.5/10. A novel experience with somehow compromised quality.

This one is migraine relief in a bottle. Thank you Demeter! I detect ozone, the barest hint of cool mint, the first spatters of rain washing dust from the air, fresh earth, and stone. It's cooling, calming, grounding and strengthening. I don't know that I'll wear this as a fragrance so much as apply it medicinally. I bought the rollerball which seems wonderful for this purpose - a dab on the tip of my nose, a roll across on each temple, and a deep sigh of almost-instant relief. I have used rollerball migraine formulae in the past from holistic health stores, but most contain lavender which I have found only makes my headaches worse. I plan to check out Demeter's other ozonic and fresh/earthy fragrances to see if they have similar beneficial effects.

It's not that concrete petrichor scent that you smell in more metropolitan areas, but feels and smells more like the petrichor smell you smell at dusk in a grass field. Reminds me a lot of being outside after heavy rain at my grandparents' lakehouse (mökki) in Finland during the summer, when it's nice and chill outside and the air is super fresh and clean. I also tried layering it with Lilyphea by Diptyque and it smells like my description of thunderstorm + add to that using the sauna with some earthy/green/minty essential oils that fill the sauna with their smell as steam fills the air. Very niche reference and description coming from a fellow Finn, but once you've experienced it first hand you'll know what I mean ;)

This is really good on a hot humid night. I hear cicadas when I smell it and I like to spray it on my sheets more than wear it on my skin. I layer it with the rollerball of Dirt when I wear it during the day because the amount of wetness turns it into an almost exclusively nighttime fragrance for me. Adding more soil makes it feel sunnier. It’s so heightened but still realistic that I imagine it’s the sensory experience Anne Rice was describing when Louis got turned in that graveyard. I don’t pick up on any of the melon note people are talking about, I got more of a swampy penicillin/ rotting leaves/ Spanish moss smell. Though mildew can lean melon in my experience. I like it, just wanted to note it for other people

Dark clouds are rolling in and the air is thick and humid — it isn't pouring yet, but will, very soon. I get something ozonic, and a bunch of dirt, wet plants, and wet sidewalks. Which I love. As it dries, there's also something floral, slightly sweet, plus melon rinds. I also get a bit of "typical men's cologne" which I usually dislike, but it doesn't bother me as much here. This is a true photorealistic thunderstorm/petrichor for me. I wish to intertwine my body and soul with this scent. Unfortunately like with most Demeter fragrances, the sillage and longevity are extremely weak. Ironically, it performs better in summer during a thunderstorm. I do have the roll on oil so I just uncap it and sniff it instead.

Immediately got me a bottle and a backup. I love the scent of drops of rain clapping the grounds dry and dusty cheeks pre thunderstorm. It's so natural and beautiful. And demeter did a phenomenal job in capturing the scent in this bottle. Always will be one of my favorites due to its absolutely lovely and close to the actual atmospheric scent account. The only compliant I've on this is that the opening is a little harsh and the oil it has tends to stain cloths afterwards (in a colorless manner), but in terms of scent accuracy i will not speak too much, it's simply magical. Still to this day I question my nose, amongst all atmospheric scents I've had a pleasure of testing "is this bottle real?"

I wanted a petrichor, or geosmin fragrance, and couldn't find the Demeter dedicated version of petrichor. I think Thunderstorm almost fits the bill. I was looking for a particular scent: a hint of a spicy clove-carnation top note sailing over wet earth and ozone after a rain in a forest. I layered Thunderstorm with a tiny bit of L'air du Temps, and am close to having that experience. Not quite, though. I may add a drop of patchouli. The Thunderstorm has a beautiful dry cedar to counterbalance the wet moss, but I still want an extra earthy soil punch that I think patchouli may satisfy. Thunderstorm notes: pine, cedar, musk, citrus (bitter lime), spearmint, peony, vetiver (soil).

I'm unfortunately a firm believer that a "realistic" rain fragrance does not exist. I've tried many claiming the "petrichor" note and not one has truly embodied it. That's not to say I didn't enjoy them or that I think people are liars, just that it doesn't hit the same as going on a walk on a hot day and being surprised by a burst of rainstorm that wets the concrete and little more. That temporary humidity, that heavy ozonic, almost static smell to the air is just not something that can be bottled I guess. But this is lovely! To me it's a slightly sweeter, more vegetal, longer lasting Dirt of the same brand. I will obviously be wearing the hell out of it still.

The picture is paints for me is my freshly mowed green garden, the washing line is strewn with a dozen white sheets, gently dancing in the breeze. Suddenly, the sky darkens to bluegrey, the thunder rumbles in the distance, the sheets begin flapping wildy, dispersing fresh laundry scent mixed with the wet stormy fields rolling in... This is a very pure and simple scent, true to the Demeter brand. This is a very airy, watery and ozonic petrichor to me - it's more cucumber less dirty to me, definitely clean and the sort of fragrance I'd feel safe wearing around others and probably even office friendly as there is a skin like quality to it.

Wow this is really nice!! I’m glad I gave this a try despite mixed reviews. (I ordered the large bottle through Amazon) Truly smells like damp grass, wet gravel, and the cool fresh air shortly before and after a summer thunderstorm! One of my most favorite real life smells, since childhood. Very comforting. Sets the mood for summer. I strictly use it as a room scent occasionally, since I haven’t found an actual room scent that is this accurate. It’s super fresh too, as if you just opened the window and let the thunderstorm air in! Sometimes I feel in the mood for this. I can also recommend the candle, actually had the candle, first.

I grow food and fell in love with botany here in north texas. every spring and summer we get torrential rains and great dividing winds, thats just what this feels like. kneeling outside pulling weeds when a hot and wet wind tears through the air, a harbinger of a storm breaking out of the towering clouds above. The sillage is very intimate, which is welcome to me. the smell is more green than i expected, likely the violet leaf. if youre outdoorsy this scent is for you, a love letter to the great american storms. i like it layer it with petrichor by demeter, makes it feel more perfumey than just vibey.

This one is probably the first perfume that made a strong impression on me and has told me a story. So I might not be quite objective with it because I have tome to kinda associate myself with it. And, to be honest, I absolutely love to smell like electricity and wet soil. Love that the scent is truly unisex. It's not even human to me, more fit for a lightning elemental. And I would sure rather be a lightning elemental than a human. So a perfect choice for me. Wish it was more long-lasting though. But perhaps the fleeting nature of this scent adds up to its free spirit.

This smells amazing to me. To me, this is a super realistic smell of sitting out in the grass or running around outside on a day that's not too hot or too cold, light lower 70s F. Like the green smell of the plants plus the soil, maybe some smells from different kinds of trees. Or like playing on haybails but without the extra smell the scorching sun creates. Smells to me like being outside as a kid on my grandparents' farm in rural MN, exploring acres that felt super magical and far away from the house but probably weren't. Kind of gives me goosebumps

I instantly loved how this smelled when I first got it and was surprised by the good projection and longevity because typically Demeter scents are kinda weak. I love wearing this on a rainy day and getting whiffs of it from my skin for hours, combined with the actual petrichor scent outside. It does smell a bit like grass and dirt but in a good way, like a garden right after a storm. This is a comforting fragrance for me yet also invigorating and refreshing. When I was wearing this today my dad said I smelled clean like I just got out of the shower.
