Something Wild

For women? Could've fooled me! I received a sample of this in a swap and I WILL be wearing all of it. It starts out sweet like frosting, then quickly develops into what smells like vanilla, light incense, and sugar cubes. I don't care who you are, man or woman, you'll enjoy this one if you like sweet scents! As much as I like this though, I decided not to purchase it based solely on its price. I discovered Aquolina Black Sugar from the same swap, and purchased it instead, for only $13. I tried Philosophy Fresh Cream, and I don't find it all that similar. In my opinion, Fresh Cream is a hollow substitute for Something Wild. It's empty. Sweet, but too light and airy. You literally smell sweet air rather than the thicker vanilla/cedar/incense. I also tried Tokyo Milk Dark's Bulletproof, and well, they're nowhere near similar to me. I guess they're kind of in the same genre, but not much alike at all. In my opinion, Aquolina Black Sugar is much closer to Something Wild. Don't get me wrong, they have their differences... Black Sugar starts out dark and lightens up as it goes, and smells a bit like a burnt marshmallows with milky vanilla, whereas Something Wild starts out like vanilla frosting, then develops into a more of a smoky vanilla sugar cube. Black Sugar is darker and Something Wild has a bit more sparkling vanilla, and I detect a faint touch of jasmine which brightens things up even more. Even still, I find it VERY similar to Black Sugar, especially as Black Sugar starts to dry down and lose a bit of it's darkness (once the raspberry fades). Something Wild is of course much higher quality. Still, it's a cheap alternative worth checking out! Update: Ended up buying a bottle of Something Wild too. There are some really good second hand and gray market prices on this fragrance, so for the lower prices you can find it for today (10-2019), it's really worth checking out! Plus, Black Sugar is discontinued and costs $45 a bottle now...

This is definitely not something wild. It is something comfy. Exactly as the notes say, it is vanilla and cedar. Not super sweet, lactonic vanilla. More gently sweet, slightly creamy vanilla that takes the hasher edges off the strong cedar note. I know this is marketed towards women but fully believe it is perfectly unisex and can see a lot of men really enjoying it. My husband could smell it from a couple feet away after only 2 test sprays so I'd say the projection is decent and it did last quite a few hours on my skin (which is rare for me. I generally have to spray my clothes to get even okay longevity.) Overall, I'm really impressed and can see myself using this to layer with regularly and possibly wearing it as my main fragrance during colder months of the year.

Got this sample his whole line today at Sephora, he really did a great job w/ all 10 each unique & different in their own way. A vanilla lover I quickly took to this; this is an addictive linear vanilla, sweet sexy but also retaining some class. It's has a warmth && coziness to it && I feel if u wore this out it would deff. attract & shower you with compliments. Price points a lil steep but I feel the quality is there. Very nice! :) Update: The more I wear this, the more addictive it becomes, I really want a new scent but it's about to be spring/summer here && I feel I'm only drawn to this now that its a lil colder atm..ugh I'm torn!

I think this fragrance is really pleasant and a solid buy. I get a lot of cedar which elevates the basic vanilla-ness. I'm not super into vanilla usually, so I was surprised that I like it so much. I think it is the cedar giving it a smokey, woody vibe that is making me really like it. This doesn't have huge projection, but it does linger around me for hours and hours. A soft little scent bubble. Very cozy. This would definitely be good for layering because it won't be overbearing to the fragrance you pair it with. I'm really glad I bought it, although I should note, I got it at a discount so I only paid about $25. At $25 it is a no brainer for me. Also this is definitely unisex.

Every single time that I wear this, it reminds me of one thing and one thing only, Creme Brulee! I get a rich custard base, topped with a layer of hardened caramelized sugar. I believe that the notes of vanilla and cedar mixing together is giving off the vibe of burnt cream. I personally love this fragrance. It's simple in its composition but smells more complex. It's cheap to buy but gives off a much pricier scent impression. The best thing about this scent is it is very well tempered. It's disposition is not sickeningly sweet which keeps it from being nauseating. Highly recommended for testing if you like vanilla-esque fragrances!

It's not anything super original, a linear cozy smoldering powdery vanilla. But I do really like this one, my third favorite of the range of ten, behind 2AM Kiss and Blackout. Was really unimpressed with the other offerings from this range I've tried so far, being mostly reminiscent of drug store shampoos and body mists, and then I came across these three lined up at the very end of my sampler set. Sure, it's just a linear candied vanilla with a somewhat artificial burnt cedar, but it's cozy and wearable and does it well, and it doesn't smell cheap. For $25 for 50mL nowadays, I'm quite the fan and will likely pick up a bottle!

If I were in the market for a new signature fragrance, this might be it. Don't let the lack of notes make you think this is a simple vanilla scent. I had it on for several hours yesterday, and while it's fairly linear, it's also incredibly addictive and delicious. Gourmand lovers should be all over this one, or maybe I should say it's not so great so there will be more for me! This is not one where you have to get past a top note, or wait for it to develop, it was true love at first sniff. A soft cuddly blanket of fragrance to wrap yourself in any time of year. Definitely fb worthy, and not overpriced, in my opinion.

I blind bought this. (Because I read here, that it was similar to Solstice Scents Manor). Glad I did. Though it's not as intense, rich, high quality or as bewitching as SSM. I still LOVE this perfume. It drives me wild! I never really thought of my self as a 'nilla type girl. But this was one helluva a buy.Creamy, I'd say Sandalwood is tucked in there somewhere too, maybe a little white flower, some tonka and lots of vanilla!!! Silage is moderate. Longevity has a bit to be desired, but not bad. But for the price...spray away my sisters and brothers. Spray away!!!.

This DOES have the same vanilla as Raghba; they smell great layered together, too. This is a smell you might smell on day two of a snowy weekend in a remote cabin with someone you can never admit to being there with. You're wearing lotion that smells of simple vanilla extract, but now it's mixed with the dried spit and sweat of the man very competently stoking the fire you're lying naked in front of. You can also smell the wood of the cabin, the fire, and so forth. But it really does share that spitty quality of Raghba, and I'm not mad at it.

Something Wild by Derek Lam really stands out without being over the top. I usually go for heavy vanillas, but the smooth cedar in this one surprised me. There's violet in it too, which might sound unusual, but it works. Don't judge it by the bottle; the scent is a total curveball. It has that cool, mysterious vibe, like a pair of Undercover jeans. I've seen it priced all over the place, from $30 to $90. I think it's best for warm weather. It needs the attention. 8/10.

As simple as the notes pyramid shows and why complicate things? I love this scent - plus I got a huge bottle for around $20 bucks. The vanilla is rich without being overpowering in the slightest, with the wafting from a campfire somewhere in the background - a little woody and a whisper of smokey. It's perfect for layering or on it's own. This isn't candy vanilla and rightly sits up there alongside my more expensive vanilla perfumes. She's a keeper.

Yes, it is a linear vanilla/cedar perfume. I understand now that it is exactly the point. Even the packaging is linear and straightforward, so the concept works. And that is exactly why I love it....this one is a favorite that I passed off as too simple initially, but it has grown on me and become a favorite that really shines in cold weather. Complex does not always equal superior. I love this. Sometimes less is more.

I love this one!! To my nose, I get a soft vanilla. Not a sweet vanilla! I think the cedar notes add depth and take down sweetness. I use this as a layering scent in the winter when I want to add soft creaminess but not sweeten too much. I love layering it with my HG Tom Ford TV. I think this could absolutely work as a unisex fragrance.

I love this. Like others mentioned it is warm and cozy but not overly so that you can’t wear it on a cool summer day. It’s a bit lactonic and creamy, almost reminds me of cream of wheat but not super realistic. It’s comforting, vanillic, and sweet without venturing fully into gourmand territory. I’m really glad I got my hands on it.

The most realistic crème Chantilly in gourmand perfumery. This fragrance is an ode to all the nuances vanilla pods can offer as a multifaceted scent, deep yet airy, creamy and dreamlike. It’s not a bomb, but without question, it’s among the coziest fragrances I own. There’s an intimacy here that is perhaps a little too sexy?

Bliss makes a body butter that smells very close to this in vanilla+bergamot scent. To me it smells like a deconstructed Shalimar, leaving only the vanilla, baby powder, tobacco and wood. Definitely test if you like Shalimar or Emeraude, and are additionally, a vanilla fan

I can't quite place what this scent reminds me of, but it's beautiful. I could be picking up Prada Candy notes on my skin. Very creamy with a hint of sweetness. The more I wear it, the better it becomes. My favorite of the entire line and bottle worthy!

This definitely reminds me of Fresh Cream by Philosophy which I also love. It is very sweet, but also has a hint of spice which is nice.

Best one of the bunch if you love Vanilla....reminds me a lot of Indult Tihota.

To my nose, this was actually a sneaky fragrance. I didn't look up anything about the notes first. I had trouble identifying what I was smelling. Ironically, I thought it was somewhat complex. I was smelling something a little bit fluffy, cinnamon-y, creamy, pastry??? It smelled like something i've experienced in a bakery as child. Turns out it was deceptively simple. Vanilla and Cedar... That's it? It's a very dry cedar, in the same way that cinnamons, nutmegs and vanilla bean pods are dried out. In that sense, it almost reminds me of Christmas... Not an actual Christmas tree- but perhaps baking sugar cookies on Christmas eve. Maybe a crackling fire place... Maybe an old, retro wood-paneled living room??? It definitely doesn't give me a wet / pissy oud wood vibe that many other woody fragrances give.

This, to me, is not wild. It is, however, incredibly cozy and comforting. On initial spray it's heavily woody but it opens into something more sweet. It's like a charred marshmallow over a campfire. That unmistakable smoky scent of aged wood mixed with gooey melting marshmallow. Thankfully the smoke and wood keep it from ever becoming too saccharine or cloying. The sillage stays in close to the body, which for me is a great thing. As someone who loves woody and spicy scents, you can sometimes run the risk of leaving a trail of smoke behind you if the sillage is too much. Overall, a beautiful fragrance and easily my favorite from the Derek Lam line.

Ideal sillage (for me) and amazing longevity. I will smell like this the next day, if I don't shower at nighttime. This is the only scent from the Derek Lam line that's worth the money (imo), the only other one worth my time is "Looking Glass". The notes make this seem like a really simple frag. Though linear, I feel like it's more than vanilla and wood. Amazing scent for winter and fall. I get a "glamping" vibe from this scent. If you have seen the movie, "Sausage Party": 1) I am sorry. 2) Imagine a anthropomorphized, sexy, toasted marshmallow (; I realize now that that imagery probably isn't very appealing. IDK just go try it at sephora, okay?

Thick vanilla, powdered spices, and a small touch of dry wood. Gives gothic cathedral vibes. I keep getting cinnamon, although not listed. Cinnamon almost always reads old-fashioned to me, and while I can understand someone labelling this as such, the dense vanilla steers this into gourmand territory (my favorite) ... so instead of old-fashioned, I’ll go with ... freshly baked snickerdoodles at Thornfield Hall? Quite heavy! For me, it’s a cold weather winter frag .. and one spritz is enough/borderline annoying.

This has been my favorite of the small Derek Lam collection I acquired some time ago. I've had them a couple of years, and some of others (Blackout, in particular) have already turned sour, but Something Wild lives on. It's a pleasant, mild vanilla and incense, it's comforting and stays on my skin for a while. It's not a young or sweet vanilla, rather has dignity and depth and is maybe a bit medicinal. I think there are likely better scents that do what this does, but I have enjoyed it and still enjoy it.

Reminds me a little of Sage Pearl, but it's not as interesting. If I had no other vanilla fragrances, I would likely go nuts for this one. However, I am a vanilla veteran, so I don't need this fragrance. It is along the lines of Prada Candy (which I LOVE),

Name is wrong...nothing wild in this one. Soft, sweet, woody vanilla. Something cozy would have been better. I like her. I combined her with a simple cherry body spray ( finery) and the smell is delicious.

Sweet, almost cinnamon-y cedar. My fav of the Derek Lam scents so far.

I find there is almost a plasticine scent to it at first spray, although it mellows a bit, down into a fine vanilla fragrance. (Not super amazing or different, just "fine".) I would agree with the review a few below mine that likens the smell to bread pudding. Also, I can see why people think it reminds them of "Prada Candy", because to my nose, the smell is quite similar to PC's vanilla-ish musk drydown. I blind-bought my travel spray because it was pretty cheap and sounded nice, but I definitely wouldn't buy any larger size of this. I don’t know how often I will be reaching for this.

I like it - good twist on a basic vanilla fragrance. the deep sweet vanilla of a man's cologne from yester years. This does not smell like it but has the same heavy vanilla as Raghba. I can see how this could be cloy, especially in the summer time. It is thick, it is sweet, it is vanilla and sweet wood. A flirty women, smoking a cigar, in a swank hotel lobby lounge (with tons of shopping bags at her feet) sitting, relaxing & sipping a glass of liquor while on vacation - wearing Something Wild.

This one stinks, but in kind of a fascinating way? It's like Vermont, but the reality of Vermont, rather than the fantasy: you're in an aging hippie's rustic cabin airbnb situation among cedar trees, surrounded by your boyfriend's buddies' sweaty ski gear. You're making hot chocolate on the wood stove, and the milk is a tad past fresh. It's not the smell I would choose, but I don't mind hanging out with it for a while. It probably has a joint and some Bailey's in its bag.

This fragrance is a toasted marshmallow, bonfire vanilla type scent. It sounds yummy in theory, but I unfortunately found it to be cloying and overpowering, and not in a good way. Something about it just smells...cheap and synthetic to me. I bought this for full price at Sephora a few years back and eventually decluttered it. If you want this type of feel in a fragrance with better quality, I would recommend Maison Margiela’s By the Fireside!

This is a very powdery, woody vanilla with an incense/smoky note. It reminds me of sawdust and beeswax. I definitely don't get Shalimar vibes from this. It's giving more of a YSL Babycat scent.

I took a chance and blind bought this at TJ Maxx. Frankly, this stinks. Something Wild smells like bread pudding scratch n' sniff stickers. Synthetic. It also for sure seems like more of a Tonka and Heliotrope than a Vanilla fragrance. I DO agree with the reviewer $kank$mell$ (haha) below about the lactonic element, however that pushes it over the edge into just nauseating for me. In summary, Tonka, Heliotrope, Vanilla, Lactonic, synthetic fragrance. If you've ever had a catheter they push this liquid into it before closing it to stop it from clotting - you can taste it in your mouth and it tastes weakly like this smells. Which = A Strong Dislike from me. - If anyone wants to trade for it (despite my description) let me know. :-)

If your'e nose is sensitive to amberwoods or really any of the cheaper aroma chemicals for longevity & sillage, sample first. It has that unwashed genital smell that certain amber chemicals can impart. The vanilla is great but that ruins it. It doesn't show amber as a note - just go to perfume finder here on fragrantica and type this one in, it will show all of the notes there. A great example of this offensive AC would be Javanilla, an expensive niche offering that uses this type of amber - read reviews on that one to understand this one. But--if you don't have issues with that, the vanilla is a sweet powdery one in the Derek Lam.

I'm working my way through the entire Derek Lam 10 Crosby line. Haven't found any that really wowed me so far, but this one definitely did the opposite. Ew. Hamster cage meets vanilla extract, with a handful of chalk dust on my skin. Truly awful. If you're not a cedar fan, stay far away from Something Wild. Even if you are a cedar fan, I recommend approaching this one with caution. There are surely better cedars out there, at any price point. Darned if it didn't persist, too--about seven hours of wear under clothing and it plagued me all day.

The initial spray was boozy. A spiced alcohol and I felt like I was in a hipster night spot. This opening quickly faded into stale, sugary, kids cereal. The cinnamon spiced woods were the only redeeming factor in this one. Definitely unisex depending on chemistry. Also, for me this was sneeze-inducing, so proceed with caution if you are sensitive.

I blind bought this for 17$ at Marshalls... Its smoky spicy woody powdery vanilla, vintage cheap smelling vanilla, that or it's expired. I can't enjoy this fragrance it hits me in my throat. My son said I smell like poison

I got a 10-pack of this perfumer's scents, and Something Wild was the first one I tried, based on the scent from the bottle. Unfortunately, this is kind of a strange scent on my skin...I was hoping for a unique, sweet musky fragrance, but I feel like this smells like a strange gourmand on me--almost like a bread pudding! It's sweet, creamy, gooey, vaguely spicy....maybe some tobacco...unique but not really in the way I was hoping for. I hope I am not let down by some of the other scents in my set, because I will say, smelling from the bottles, they all actually smell like they have great potential--and a good variety of different notes (a few florals, at least one aquatic, a few sweet ones...). But time will tell. I will post more reviews as I sample through them. Update: I have to come back and say, the longer I wore this the better I liked it. I actually used 3 sprays of this first use, and I think it was just too much. This lasted all day for me, and by the end of my day, I actually did like it better. I am going to sample this again and only spray 1x on skin, under clothing, and see how much I enjoy this one. Kudos for longevity on Something Wild!!!

With a name like Something Wild, I was expecting something "red," spicy, fruity, and maybe boudoir. But what I'm getting is birch tar, combined with a creamy French Vanilla flavored taffy, still warm and being pulled and stretched. It's an odd combination: imagine layering Bvlgari Black with a sugary vanilla gourmand. I think Strange Dichotomy would be an apt name for this scent! It doesn't develop much, just gently fades, and the vanilla becomes more prominent than the tar. There's also a slight plasticky aspect to it that reminds me of Silly Putty, if you are familiar with that. When I was a kid, this beige putty came inside a plastic egg. You could press it against comic strips, and it would make a reverse image of the newsprint that you could stretch and transfer. I don't perceive any similarity to Brooks Brothers Black Fleece. Black Fleece is more peppery rose to me. I find Something Wild to be more along the lines of Vera Bradley's Vanilla Sea Salt, and I think it will appeal more to those who like sweet vanilla than to those who are into woody or tarry scents.

I haven’t blind bought or reviewed a fragrance in ages, but after my blind purchase of the 5.9oz jug of this juice and trying for days to pinpoint what this smells like on my skin, I think I finally figured it out. And it’s actually thanks to one of the reviews below referring to the anthropomorphized marshmallow. This, to me, smells like a far better, less cloying B&BW Marshmallow Pumpkin Latte. Bath & Body Works brings out this scent every fall, and I WANT to love it. But there’s always something in the blend that falls short of spicy, sweet, deliciousness and lands instead in heavy, syrupy, perfume-y country. That one gives me a headache. It might be the signature B&BW base that’s irritating me in that scent, but I don’t have the issue on this one. It’s not, however, the sweet vanilla I was expecting. I do like it though. There’s a spiciness to it that I really like, and cedar and I don’t always get along. I need more time with this one, but I do think I like it, specifically for cooler weather.

For purpose of this review, I am a male. I blind bought this fragrance because several online reviewers I follow rated this as a decent men’s winter scent even though it’s marketed for women. They were right that it has a masculine quality about it... but barely. I’m not a fan. It has a very strong cedar scent (almost smells like a strong, bitter red wine) that really overpowers the vanilla note. This lessens a bit with dry down but stil remains overpowering. Which is truly a shame. The vanilla reminds me of a light, marshmallow cream that would certainly provide the sweetness desired by a lot of men for their winter fragrances. If the cedar could be replaced by leather... booze... maybe a light tobacco... men would flock to this. Sometimes I don’t know why I ever even try to stray away from CH Men. Overall: 3/10

Cold winter day. Cabin in the woods. Someone heating milk on the stove. A nice fire burning in the fireplace. They grab a good book and a warm blanket -WHOOPS- milk is boiling over now. They reach for chocolate to put in their over boiled milk but realize its all gone so instead they add some vanilla syrup in. New clever drink is created= Hot Vanilla (instead of a hot chocolate). That is the scene this fragrance portrays. It has a smokiness in there, vanilla is there, but theres also a lactonic burnt milk accord like when you leave milk boiling too long. Its a fantastic scent. Its perfect for christmas time. Its not stupidly over sweet. Its unisex. Its unique. Its just special. If any of what I described intrigues you, Its something you must checkout before prices on this skyrocket.

In the late 1990's, Glade introduced gel/oil air fresheners for the car, and my mom bought a vanilla scented one for the station wagon that I later inherited as my "first car." In the hot Georgia summers, the ampoule melted, and the result was a gooey vanilla mess that lasted for the full year that I drove the car. Spraying Derek Lam's Something Wild on my arm yesterday, I was brought back to that moment in my teens. Not to too heavily critique, but for this scent, you could save the money and buy a Fantasies body spray and get the same result. For a more complex vanilla, try Guerlain's Spirituese Double Vanille. Heck, even Prada Candy, which costs less than Derek Lam, smells much better composed. Sorry for the bad review, but Something Wild was a scrubber for sure.

Bought at Tj Maxx....by mistake....UGH !!! I actually wanted Blackout. Got the 2 confused...oh well! Something Wild, at first spritz is....well...$%&@!. Then, as it developes, it changes for the better. I get way more notes than the 2 listed for sure. Vanilla?? I agree with another reviewer...vanilla is in the back seat. I can feel this is a edgy scent to sniff. I guess it fits into that "different" category. This one is not mainstream to my nose & IMHO. I will give this a chance and see what happens on a new day. It has me perplexed to say the least...but I a leaning towards it being a "like". Something in this is almost...dirty...on the top...but the good underneath shines back...if that makes any sense...???....Perplexed, for now.

I actually really like this perfume. I don’t think it matches its name “Something Wild” because to me, this is a sweet, cozy vanilla scent. I love wearing this on cool winter days. There is a warmth in this that is just so comfy and relaxing to me, very casual days, either being lazy at home watching movies or grocery shopping and running errands. I think this is a very smooth fragrance, I can’t believe it smells so different to so many and has so many bad reviews, I don’t smell any B.O. or motor oil, or really any cedar, it’s just a simple, warm, deep, vanilla to me, a little darker than some vanillas, not an extract, but rich and cozy, like a nice hug from your mom while she is wearing the softest sweater.

I am absolutely shocked reading the reviews here! Not sure if it is my nose, my skin/chemistry, or my official sample I received, but I do not seem to be smelling the same scent that everyone else is. To me, the vanilla really takes a backseat in this one. Instead, it's mostly cloying in a boozy tobacco den kind of way. I'm still trying to figure out whether I like cedar fragrances, but if this one is any indication, then I definitely do not. It comes off heavy, incensed, and dirty. While I clearly do not mix well with this fragrance, I have decided "Something Wild" is a very suitable name for the fragrance. This invokes imagery of a very wild night out - sweet, powdery, skanky, smokey, heavy, dirty.

Something Wild has a smoky flavor, interspersed with a warm,rich vanilla. Niiice. This is a great warm,sweet,smoky scent,primarily to be worn in the fall. I don't know whether I want to curl up by a fire,or go walking through the woods. This is slightly reminiscent of a forest fire,but the rich,madasgascar vanilla softens the blow. I like the modern,artistic feel of the bottle,with it's little purple window peeking out at the world. This does have a bit of a chemical smell to it,which I actually kind of like. This is autumn in a bottle,and I absolutely love this!
