Rose Phoenix

Beautiful bubblegum-y rose and amber. It’s warm, happy, and cozy. As it wears the amber takes a back seat to the floral and fruit. I barely get the shiso in this, maybe in the far background. After about an hour the incense and dragon’s blood comes out and the rose falls back. Super unique and dynamic.This composition is truly phenomenal.

My penultimate d.grayi review before my next lot of samples arrive... Once again, reviewing "blind" because I like to have fun and see how good (or not) my nose is. (The fact I already have another batch of samples on their way should speak for itself on my feelings towards this brand!) Oof, Rose Phoenix is STRONG. Thank god I always start with one singular spray and add as necessary, because this most definitely does not need multiple sprays!! Lovely sweet orange at the top, very fizzy (frankincense I'll assume), the combination making it orange sherbet-like. With dramatic flair the rose waltzes in close behind. These make for a delicious, gorgeous combo... unfortunately there's a "but". There's also an incense note, but not of the clean smoky kind (as in the inoffensive woodfire smoke seen in the likes of By The Fireplace), rather the quintessential--as my parents would call it--"hippy dippy" incense. It's not terrible, but not my vibe. Oh? No frankincense? BUT dragon's blood... yup! That'll do it, that's where the "hippy" vibe is coming from. Wait, yes frankincense! I'm consulting the website now; it also lists orange in the ingredients. The patchouli no doubt adds to the earthy/dank incense vibe. For me this is one of those oddball perfumes that, despite everything, I'm strangely drawn towards, so I'll probably keep the sample around in my collection and give it an appreciative sniff a few times a year. I've shared this sentiment in some other reviews, but once again: I strongly believe that fans of Lush's old school perfumes (Karma, Smell of Weather Turning, Fantabolusa, etc) would REALLY appreciate this brand's offerings!

This is probably the first rose-forward scent I've ever enjoyed. There is a sweetness to this, maybe the peach and amber, that balance it out perfectly to prevent it from smelling too overbearingly floral.

rose phoenix is my absolute favorite from this brand! it's a sweet, fruity-floral, amber scent. it's a very well blended rose perfume and it's not overbearing, which is hard to do with rose notes. although i love it, i try not to spray it as much as it reminds me of my late mother (i'm a big cry baby lol). she always wore rose scented oils and rose scented face creams before bed. i miss her so much... dgrayi in my opinion, is the only house that knows how to translate emotion and feeling through perfumery. james really has a talent and heart. my favorite indie brand!
