Cuir Cannage

Cuir Cannage is significantly better than what I had initially thought. I was very young in my fragrance career. This was actually my first experience of a high end fragrance. I believe this was back in 2015 and I had no idea what Iris or leather smelled like. So I did not enjoy it at all! I just simply wasn't ready for it. I'm so happy that I did not throw it away or sell it. For some reason I always thought Christian Dior was higher quality if nothing else and I wanted to hold onto Cuir Cannage just in case I wanted to come back sometime later. And here we are! 10 years later and now I am a fragrance aficionado. I can say with 100% certainty that this fragrance is exceptional. I am aware that it is still not for everyone, and I do not recommend that you purchase before sampling it. However, if you are a fan of smooth leather and iris, it's very difficult to go wrong here. I have not smelled Dior Homme Intense unfortunately, but I assume it is similar and perhaps was supposed to be a substitution for this. Now they are both difficult to find! How ironic. But of course there is a reason for that. It's classy and elegant. If you are sick of the sweet and almost immature fragrance releases as of late, this might be a little relief for you. It is for me. I'm glad I have it and I will be searching for a full bottle. Not going to lie however. I'm going to purchase Patchouli Imperial first if I can find it. I freaking love that thing. And of course Mitzah if I can find it. A few others. There are so many truly exceptional fragrances from this line and I have no idea why they stopped making them. All of the new stuff lately is trash I'm sorry to say. I really am because I like Francis. They are just not even in the same vicinity. If you guys have not tried the original fragrances from the line you are doing yourself a disservice. Figure out a way to try them out and then come back. Cuir Cannage should be applauded and then immediately added to your collection. Along with everything else from Francois Demachy.

Despite Dior's usual over the top rhetoric, Cuir Cannage is neither original nor groundbreaking. There are a fair few floral leathers around, so it's best to dispense with the notion that its blend of notes "open up a whole new realm". All the same, Cuir Cannage is beautifully crafted. I've read both below the line and elsewhere that the opening could be considered 'assertive', but on me it's not full-bodied at all. A little boisterious, certainly, with clear barnyard elements, though this barnyard feels aired-out with the animals having bolted a while back. If there is an issue it's that the composition is somewhat imbalanced at first - a whole lot of leather and very little of the floral component. Turns out it's just a case of the notes needing to settle into a natural order - which is all of 15 minutes. Thereafter you get the best of both worlds. The leather is generous and plush and, much as I'm loathe to reference it, indeed smells somewhat like the inside of a designer handbag. I like the analogy of a wallet with a well-worn character and charm better, though. (Hey, I'm a guy!) In terms of texture I get pebbled instead of smooth, probably my muddled way of saying that Francois Demachy has managed the *ahem* tanning aspect of the fragrance quite masterfully: a fully-formed leather that still manages to subtly retain its rawhide origins. The final stage of the treatment process is a smoky birch overcoat. The florals are also excellent. Orange blossom is most prominent, followed by iris; jasmine, rose and ylang-ylang are difficult to isolate but it's not a source of criticism or frustration here. On the contrary, it wears wonderfully on skin. The best surprise is that there are ocassional breakouts of freshness from this bouquet, as if a self-regulating mechanism to ensure that any danger of the leather building up too heavily is avoided. Clever and creative in one. Projection is minimally intrusive, longevity excellent. One of my favourite releases of 2014 so far.

While Cuir Cannage may not be among the most original Dior releases, it is my favorite, second only to Eau Noire and overtaking Dior Homme Parfum. I'm not a fan of this house, but I love what they did with the early Privee line. Many critiqued Demachy, but he had a good run at Dior. Now, "Captain Diabetes" is in charge, and if you could still get perfumes like Cuir Cannage in Paris before, Kurkdijan decided to make it easier for you and completely terminate the best scents from an already elusive line. As I said, Cuir Cannage doesn't bring anything new to the leather genre. Yes, it was inspired by Chanel's Cuir de Russie and then sits right in the same lane as perfumes like Knize, Tabac Blond, Cuir Mauresque, and Great Britain, but for me, it shines more than the others. It easily tops the Chanel; it is less sweet/syrupy and more about the leather compared to the Lutens (which I owned, wore, and loved for years), and it is not as powdery and floral as the Roja. It walks the perfect balance between a smoky/ashy leather with woody and musky undertones and beautiful floral notes (orange blossom mostly with some ylang and iris). It is assertive and even slightly aggressive, but never crosses the line. It is elegant and sophisticated but knows how to make a stand. For me, it plays the perfect tune. The right amount of everything, while nothing feels out of place. I like the dry and ashy aspects of it, but also the oily-sweet muskiness it dries down to, with just the right amount of birch. I don't find it overly floral and detect more of the orange blossom over the iris and the ylang-ylang, especially in the opening and through the heart, while the base is more about the smoky woods and faux castoreum. I'll compare Cuir Cannage to Cuir de Russie: Cannage is bigger, bolder, not as dry, far 'oilier' than Cuir de Russie, and somehow gives me a kind of 'waterproof' sensation, like the leather is airtight, squeaks and creaks when it moves, kinda impression. think Cannage is whiter and brighter as well, and not as smokey as CDR. I've never felt a beluga whale's skin but the supple, white, slippery leathery feeling I get from Cuir Cannage had images of Beluga whales swimming around my head. I love my Cuir de Russie (before the bad new EDP reformulation) but I admit that its just so painfully subtle and quiet that Cuir Cannage is really coming in handy when I want a classic floral leather that isnt so retiring. Also, people in wet climates will understand how dry scents get wiped out in the rain. Cuir Cannage stands up to wet weather when Cuir de Russie disappears. There's also a hot-cold vaguely mentholated accord to Cuir Cannage that is really interesting and modern to my nose. It's also long lasting and has a wonderful smokey, cold-creamy dry down to look forward to. EDIT: Shop around for this if you can, I tried Cuir Cannage and the standalone Dior boutique and it smelt quiet different than what I tried at Nordstrom. Quality control seems to be an issue.

This is a lovely fragrance and has many stages of development. The broadest description I can summon is that strikes me firmly as a very high quality Nag Champa incense stick, unburned. It launches with a blast of orange blossom and ylang, rounded off by a thick powdery iris note, and contrasted by the astringent woody birch. It smells like a blend from 100 years ago, in a good way. As it develops, the powdery vibe grows in intensity, woods surface, and I detect a whiff of patchouli mated to a clean fruity accord, as gentle sweetness pokes through. Stage three evokes aromatic spices; cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla, and a creamy delectable musk seems to magically appear, the combination evoking rice pudding. The musk grows in depth, reminding me of hyraceum, maintaining a purring animal warmth in tandem with the floral bouquet, violet, and anise, as sweetness subsides. This is the most sensual portion of the journey, which gently drifts off cleanly over time leaving behind only faint traces of flowers. This is gorgeous. It really stands out from modern trends, and avoids those same pitfalls.

Vintage, smoky powdery floral, iris dominates everything. A simple explanation, Cuir Cannage is composed of iris, violet, leather and patchouli. Smoky feeling is not strong, delicate and soft. I don't know if I have an established impression of Dior's classics, it is really rattan. That kind of rattan line, and a little rough, moderately thick, well-crafted leather. I seem to smell a little bit of lavender, or sage, maybe Cuir Cannage has a Fougere element hiding in it. Influenced by rich floral, vanilla and amber bases, this leather from Dior is very sweet. Cuir Cannage is female, but male too. Very docile, also leather, Cuir Cannage is not as strong, tenacious, and rebellious as Cuir de russie, it is more like Dior, clean, conservative, and Dior has always been deeply rooted in the image of elegance and charm. Cuir Cannage is poorly layered and the lines of change blurred, But that makes it smell like a whole, rather than a spliced product. It has character and soul, but it was discontinued... I'm so sad. Obviously it is a Dior created with the most heart!

Dior are known for their impeccable execution of the famous Iris and leather combination, and Cuir Cannage is easily the best of them. This is a scent which is so effortlessly refined and sophisticated, oozing class and wealth whilst remaining perfectly polite. This Iris flower accord is very light and airy, with a gentle powdery aspect about it - not like the typical thick dustiness of orris. Highlighted by buttery ylang and soapy white florals, before delving into a rich, crisp leather. This is not the rugged leather of an old jacket, but instead the crisp glossiness of bespoke Italian dress shoes. There’s a delicate aromatic greenness which blends into the background seamlessly, providing lift and masculinity. I absolutely love this. It’s bittersweet sampling it because I know how difficult it is to find. I know that my collection will never feel complete until I own this utter masterpiece, it would easily be my go-to scent to wear when I’m dressed up to the nines.

If you like leather animalic florals like me, definately try this one! Cuir cannage is a dry industrial shoe wax like slightly smoky leather accord + animalic accords like musks, civetone, slight castoreum and hot cumin + floral notes like soft sweet iris accord that is used in dior homme series too, white florals like jasmine, sweet banana like ylang ylang also rose can be felt specially at the start of the scent. The base is like sweet leathery accord that ia now alot softer and less waxy/smoky than the start mixed with patchouli, cumin dry woods and animalics plus slight white/yellow floral feel and some sweet Coumarin. It's like a soft sweet cozy leathery drydown. Great performance like other dior private line scents plus the animalic side reminds me of dior oud ispahan but that one got a fecal side to it that cuir cannage lacks.

Rich stuff, in every sense of the word. Gorgeous supple well-cured leather marinaded in deep, sweet, heady spice and just enough floral/sugary grace notes to help it along. As others note - very close to Lutens Cuir Mauresque, which is what my own personal leather heaven smells like; the Dior does differ, though. As I was expecting, the opening's sweeter and yet more artificial than the Lutens, perhaps a bit overwhelming about making its big entrance; but what I wasn't expecting was Cuir Cannage's really strong performance after a couple of hours, not just lasting, but deepening, with the spice and woodier things lingering and swelling. It's just beautiful. Lovely, complex, sophisticated, nuanced stuff. 10/10 would buy - who am I kidding - would bathe in, if given a chance.

2014 Batch: I paid way too much for this on eBay but wow, you will know immediately that this is a SPECIAL perfume. This is made unisex even with birtch, cade and tobacco. The civet pairs beautifully with the smooth calf leather to give it some serious sexy time vibes. Dior releasing garbage like Cuir Saddle when they have bonafide masterpieces in their heritage such as Cuir Cannage is a head scratcher. This could easily be a signature scent if you can afford the steep premium. It's also deceptively long lasting, and a little goes a long way. I've gotten compliments on this 8+ hours after application, and my dry skin drinks perfume oils. Does have a vintage vibe, so don't expect a modern profile. ××××××××××××××××××××× Scent 100/100 Performance 90/100 ×××××××××××××××××××××

I agree with many reviewers here stating Cuir Cannage is not the most original leather fragrance out there and certainly not one of the more favorable BUT: - SL Cuir Mauresque - the most similar but way more dense/heavy and not exactly easy to wear - Knize Ten - the second similar is fantastic, yet clearly a male fragrance - Cuir de Lancome - discontinued - Etro Gomma - similar, but not as sweet and sans iris - Chanel Cuir de Russie - is my signature fragrance - a leather fragrance it is, yet different type of leather fragrance and IMO not comparable to CC In that sense, the range to choose from is not too big after all. Adding great performances and classy leather/floral aura - this is an absolute leather classic and must-try for every leather fragrance aficionado.

I have been sampling this for a few months, testing it at the Dior stores. The first time I tried it I said 'wow' and I still do. It's true that it doesn't bring in new elements and that it is quite similar to Lutens and Knize Ten. But its smell is of exceptional quality and it lasts longer than the others when I made a comparison. So, I got a bottle in the end. Floral leather fragrances are beautiful and perhaps 'sexy'. There is a juxtaposition of feminine and masculine notes which is compelling. I don't find this feminine and it does not smell like a lady's handbag, not at all.

thanks god we do not need anymore to spend a fortune to buy a vintage CARON'S LE TABAC BLOND. nor go to wien to buy the spectacular yet elusve & ill distributed KNIZE TEN, because we have a wonderful copycat: CUIR CANNAGE. cheaper? yes, cheaper than TABAC BLOND, but almost twice the price of KNIZE TEN, but obviosly easier to find (& you do not have to go to wien or browse eBay for a reasonable seller)... BUY IT BEFORE SOMEONE SCREAMS "PLAGIARISM!!!" & DIOR discontinues it... anyway as SPECTACULAR as BOIS D'ARGENT & EAU NOIR, both the top of the collection.

First scent of this type. Holy Wha! It went on screaming, leather yes, but something else I couldn't identify. Something I don't have a name for but a memory of. Sort of Midnight Mass meets Tack Room meets Campfire? And it stayed and stayed. By the time I went to bed a couple hours later is was tamer, like a wolf down to an attack dog. This morning, still there and gently incense-y, Coach pursey and powder. Geez, this is a scent to live up to! I will be using this, off and on. Couldn't handle it every day, I just don't have the Chutzpah yet!

Finally got to compare this with Cuir Mauresque side by side! The first time they were almost indistinguishable (even the Serge rep said "somebody did a good job copying" sarcastically) so I did it a couple more times.. Results: Cuir Cannage starts out a lot paler with lots of iris, somewhat dry and powdery with other floral support. Cuir M. on the other hand is dense, sweet, and animalic from the beginning. The middle part is when they're most alike; CC turns sweeter and more leathery while CM becomes smoother.

Dior Cuir Cannage (2014) - expensive leather - Funny thing, I just got a new leather strap for a watch and I quickly spritzed on #francoisdemachy ‘s perfume. I was surprised it smelled the same. Shouldn’t all leather fragrances smell like leather? You’ll be surprised how many leather fragrances are just representations not realistic interpretations. Anyway, this one had Leather & Earthy/Powdery Iris and a floral backbone of Ylang & White flowers. Base is mainly leather, violets with a hint of smoke. Wonderful.

Managed to get a 7.5ml from a seller on ebay and oh my goodness, this is crazy, really reminds me of chanel that my nana used to wear in some ways, might be the iris leather combo. I wish this wasn't discontinued because if it was still available, even at its crazy price point, and considering that my 7.5ml macerated on an old ladies perfume cupboard for 10 years at least, I would buy this and be happy with the purchase. Classy, elegant and refined, I'll never forgive Dior for discontinuing this one

Easily a four star frag, I wouldn't doubt if some may believe it's a fiver. Weird, I can't make out one single note but it just smells so nice, jasminey?........the orange blossom gives it a nice sweet "glow". It seems many point out the leather as being on the very front, which would make you think cooler weather, though today I wore it on a beautiful sunny, warm day. Awesome scent for both sexes. Good longevity, I feel kind of guilty not dressing up for this

This is great leather scent. Cuir cannage it very strong scent and soft. I love it. I like base in this scent. Because it had tobacco note in base. The top note it had a little spicy and leather stuff white floral which blend nice and the middle note it had still leather note and evident floral up but it had to hidden smoky scent. The base note tobacco scent evident and still leather scent. It had a little floral and smoky. I think that ok. I love this one.

This is actually super, enjoyable leather. If Knize Ten is a men's room stall disc, this is a Knize-styled leather minus the offensive notes. Happy scent just because. Because leather. It's classic but up-to-date. Excellent projection and longevity, and a compliment getter from those who like classic, grown up, hairy, strong-backboned fragrances. Confidence carries it off equally for a man or a woman.
