I was lucky enough to recently visit Maison Diptyque on Bond Street and try all of Les Essences de Diptyque, and have since acquired the 10ml sample set. I will say from the off that this is, to me, an outstanding collection: it does exactly what it sets out to do, with each fragrance somehow representing their scentless counterpart in the natural world, resembling something entirely new and unique rather than reminding you of the individual notes contained within. I think therefore that more so than other fragrances, they simply must be smelled in person rather than simply basing your opinion off the notes and other reviews. However, I would I would recommend the 10ml sample set to ANY perfume lover (even as a blind buy) as I do believe it is a masterful display of perfumery. Coral Oscuro seems to be getting one of the poorer reputations within the collection so I'll say here that it is the standout scent to me and everyone I've sampled the scents with. It is a fragrance made for summer, by the shore but more of a rocky beach (or indeed a coral atoll) than a white sand 'resort' vibe, though it would certainly wear excellently there too. The problem is I love it so much I want to wear it all through winter! It smells rocky yet delicate: mineralic, the slightest hint of salt, citrus, marine. It is immensely sophisticated, being better blended and with more beautiful subtlety than any 'seaside' fragrance I have ever tried. In fact, it makes other marine scents seem remarkably unsubtle and offputting by comparison. It smells like no scent that exists in nature but is still unmistakably of the natural world. The notes may read as firmly unisex or even vaguely masculine on paper. However, it is so delicate and 'pretty' of a fragrance in person that it does, in fact, lean feminine in my opinion. I will say that despite being eau de parfum I don't find the greatest sillage or longetivity in ANY of the essences collection, but Corail lasts better than some others, with Bois Corse packing the strongest punch.

Wow. I love it. I’m going to wax poetic for a minute. I don’t know how to classify this scent. The coral here is a living creature, a chameleon. Marine-floral. Vegetal-mineral. Citrus trees spouting in a rosewater-spiked sea. Balmy, aquatic mandarin. The three chords I can discern are orange, green, and blue. 🟧Orange: imho, the mandarin is the star. I want to say the mandarin here hits the same note as The Body Shop satsuma body butter of my childhood. Eerie, sweet déjà vu. 🟩Green: I’ve always had a visceral dislike for jalapeño and bell pepper scents, so thank god I’m blind to it here. There is a bitter green spike to this scent, which reads chlorophyll-y to my nose. Like waxy, just-snapped leaves. 🟦Blue: There's a strong salty-sea accord. Not beachy/tropical, but more briney/oceanic. Harmonizes really well with the soft rose thread. Of Les Essences, Corail was the stoutest. This fragrance hit its high note straight out the bottle and played it strong and steady for over twenty-four hours. Three days out from original spritz and I can still catch an echo of it in my hoodie. I’ve never met a citrus that performs like this. My favourite Diptyque to date. I’m sorry, paycheque. Mental Snapshot: A stone-pebble beach, hidden off sandstone bluffs. Dappled sunshine through plump orange trees, clouds casting mosaics upon the satin blue sea. An Aperol spritz, maybe three. You’re a guest at the White Lotus in Sicily. tl;dr: 5/5 star Mediterranean resort, would recommend to friend 🍊🍃🌊

Most interesting and surprisingly personal for me in this new collection. I was amazed by how the notes do conjure an image of coral and sea shells, kind of like when you pick shells tangled in kelp by the beach. There’s that faintly sharp sea-smell that lol you very rarely get from most “blue” or “marine” scents. After that, that sharp smell on me amped up til it reminded me of rust with a fragrant backbone. Then on its last arc it smelled like both leaves and my grandmother’s table where she had all her powder puffs. Idk interpreted that as something to do with the passage of time and life because of how nostalgic the smells of seashells and rust were for me and my childhood, come full circle to my grandmother who passed away 4 years ago during the pandemic. Even when she passed whenever I visit her room I still pick up traces of that powder she uses. I won’t be getting a full bottle of this for that latter association but! Among the collection this and Lilyphea are very siccessful in nailing their core concepts!

🌊 Coral Phantom 🌶️ In nature, coral is silent. It releases no scent, remaining merely a hard sculpture on the ocean floor. Here, however, it becomes a sensory paradox. It is submerged in a crystalline, icy depth where the water has an almost sterile purity. 9/10 (minus one point cos of the price.FUCKYOU) Might end it all from how perfect this perfume is yet SO EXPENSIVE. WHAT R WE DOINGG. Genuinely my fave scent EVER. I have a sample that I use SOO sparingly. It smells exactly like a spicy margarita, especially the tajin smell, perfect for summer. The bottle is also soo cute but damn 350 for perfume is so beyond me lol, especially when there’s no options for travel sizes unless you wanna buy the whole set of new perfumes, which I don’t enjoy enough to do. This is such a beautiful and unique scent to my nose. It opens green and spicy with an aquatic base. I get the jalapeño and bell pepper comparison at this stage. I find it refreshing, interesting, and very pleasant. After a few minutes, it dries down to a lovely, fresh aquatic rose on my skin. I can smell the spicy green notes and a hint of citrus under the floral aquatic, but the green and citrus notes don’t dominate on me. I don’t get any of the salt accord. It lasts for maybe 6 hours on me. I’ll be wearing this as a summer daytime scent. As much as I love this, I agree with the other comments that say it’s not a safe blind buy.

MARINE!! I live by the beach, but hate the washed up kelp smell. Corail Oscuro is bright, peppery, albeit fishy, but I liked it. I was searching for a salty, marine, wet rock, and tide pooling after a king tide, and this fit the bill (not literally, I only have a sample size!). But if you're searching for something cutesy and mermaid like, this is not it. This is for the mythologically accurate sirens. It lingers, can be abrasive and bitter, but stays fresh and light.

I love Corail Oscuro on paper - the sample card has scented the pockets of my jacket beautifully. I have now stored the card in my diary. On my skin though the scent disappears instantly. Why does this happen? I so wish Corail Oscuro is on my skin as it is on paper so I can float around in a summery haze. Am disappointed that this happens with this scent. But wait the scent keeps coming back ... I am floating in a summery haze. Aha an enigma.

Spicy margarita! In the best way. Interesting scent that keeps you coming back, closing your eyes to understand what it is you’re smelling. I sampled in store and had a ball enjoying wearing it all day. Definitely on my wish list for full bottle. Different to anything I have.

I thought this was a weak, watery aquatic but its actually fearsomely strong. I can smell the green vegetal basenote on my jacket sleeve a week later. Very interesting, haven't made up my mind on this one yet.

the notes listed on fragrantica are a headscratcher. not sure what they’re based on since the notes as listed by the perfumer are rose, mandarin and mineral accord. but that’s neither here nor there. glad i tested this one in person bc even from the bottle i was a bit meh but on my skin, it’s a performer. great sillage and longevity but not too much as to be completely overwhelming. lasts eternally on clothes. even though it’s powerful it’s very well balanced; the citrus isn’t sharp or screechy, the rose is green rather than powdery, and the salty minerality lends an almost fresh sensuality. very excited to now have a sample and get to know this frag bc the price tag on the fb is the only thing giving me pause!

Powerfully vegetal and quite an oddball of a fragrance! It almost smells like sour grass and citrusy apples that are submerged underwater in the opening to me. Or like a spicy margarita on the rocks— but like you’re swimming inside the margarita glass. As it dries down I feel like I get some crushed sea shell vibes but the vegetal and sour, underwater nature doesn’t go away for me. If I smelled this blind I don’t think I would guess this is from Diptyque because it is so tart/sour. This is definitely not a blind buy because it’s exceptionally unique and niche, but I can see this being a love for the right people!

it's quite a fresh scent, nice and airy, nothing too offensive. definitely not too bold. it is a little too citrusy for me personally, at points it smells like laundry; a bit like when you can smell another's dryer running from outside. unfortunately i wouldn't say it's for me, i certainly couldn't see my self reaching for it regularly. i also think it smells exactly like acqua di gioia, so for the price i'd recommend that over this ! addendum — it might be because i am using a dabber instead of a spray (i've had better luck with samples of the others in the line), but it's only lasted a few hours on my skin.

This scent has the same perfumer as the limited edition Kyoto perfume and you can smell this connection in this scent. Very reminiscent of Kyoto, but with the beet/earth note dialed down and the background turned up. An excellent scent for people who like Kyoto, but can't find a bottle. This is quite a versatile scent - it is light, inoffensive, but still has presence. It smells like the color coral - but a rich, intensely pigmented coral which thrives under the sea - this scent is the vibrant reef coral that still retains an element of the sea or earth.

Bitter, green, salty, vegetal, and very nice! Sharp and soothing. Walking on a blustery beach when the tide's going out or a vegetable garden in the sun (think bell peppers, or fresh green beans you can snap in half and eat raw). I'm going to love wearing this on a breezy summer day. Unisex leaning masculine, though, and the aquatic aspect somewhat recalls men's deodorant, I won't lie.... Maybe not a blind buy or a crowd-pleaser, but I'm finding Corail Oscuro interesting and fun overall; it's definitely reminding me of Pool by Tsu Lange Yor

This stood out to me the most amongst the five but as it dries down on my skin, it smells like a Diptyque perfume that hardly anyone talks about - Eau de Lierre, except less sharp and equally as green. Honestly, none of them seem to be worth their price tag. Also, if you like Rose Roche, get Eau Rose (more rosy) or Eau Capitale (more patchouli) instead.

I can't explain it, but this smells like kelp noodles to me. I would characterize this as a predominantly marine algae scent with flourishes of citrus and powdery florals. The robustly mineral-like/"salty-wet" top note will likely put some people off, but out of the Diptyque's 5 new scents, this is the only one I could see myself wearing.

A beautiful green fragrance. In the opening I get rose, a note I mostly don't enjoy.The drydown is the best part for me, it reminds me a lot of my beloved Eau de Lierre, a very green fragrance also from Diptique. Coral Obscuro is more longlasting than Eau de Lierre.

Salty and green. At least it doesn't make me salty. Someone wrote its not work full bottle and I couldn't agree more - maybe if Diptyque would have smaller bottles then yes, but not 100 ml. Seems to be good for layering.

I love really green green scents, and this is definitely one. I get a sort of wet green bell pepper from this, with a little ginger behind it. Very interesting, but definitely glad it was a sample size!

Peel a green mango and put chilly salt over it. It is how it smells like. Surprisingly long lasting for a fresh perfume like this. Quite pricey.

Okay hear me out. I know the previous reviewer said that there’s rose in this, but there’s definitely no rose in this that I can discern. I just received a sample vial of this at my local Diptyque boutique. They were so nice to give me sample vials of the ones I was interested in, which was this and the lily one. I should have also asked for the nacre one but I didn’t want to be greedy. During COVID lockdown when we had nothing to do, I tried to make my own jalapeño margaritas, which involved just infusing vodka with jalapeños. some of my first few attempts were much too spicy but I still tried to drink it anyway. This smells EXACTLY like the too-spicy jalapeño margaritas. Its almost straight up jalapeños but it also has a little of the sweetness of the simple syrup too. It even has a touch of orange that’s akin to the grand marnier used in the drink. Really uncanny.

Extremely fresh and aromatic. There's a strong herby feel like fresh aloe or something picked from a rainforest. Definitely unisex. It's not strong, but it envelops you in a breezy cloud that lingers. The name indicates they wanted to evoke snorkeling or scuba diving. I can see that, as it definitely gives me exotic vacation vibes. It's different from others in its class. That said, it's just not for me. Whatever that herby note is, it reminds me more of food, drink, or lotion than it does perfume. As it dries down more, it's shifting to green pepper and bug spray (Off!). All in all, yes, it's the smell of a snorkel or scuba trip: salty air, the boat, the uv damaged rubber equipment, sunscreen, and then later on, bugspray over salty air. Weird. But maybe an impressive piece.

I thought this was halfway between Kyoto and Venise even before I read the reviews that mentioned this :D I think it's the most wearable of the three – I don't feel like a soily beet or a green bell pepper wearing this. Will I wear it – no, I prefer more leafy greens, so to speak, such as Eau de Lierre, but I think it could work if you liked Kyoto or Venise (but it's obsolete if you own any of the two). edited the next day: it has one thing absolutely in common with Kyoto: I kept my sprayed wrist on the laptop for half a day yesterday and now, the next day, my laptop still smells like this perfume's base note (which is the same as Kyoto's). Kyoto lingered on my keyboard for more than a year after one spray; I wonder how long Corail Oscuro will stay on my laptop...

You've just buried your face in a bowl of mesclun greens. Your first thoughts: fresh, damp, a little wild. Not bitter, but so green it packs a punch... wait, is that dressing? The leaves, you realise, were just tossed in a quick splash of yuzu vinaigrette and finished with a lazy crank of sea salt. It’s sharp but soft, bright but natural. Maybe a tad too. And I'm someone who does actually appreciates green notes, I do love my leaves—give me cassis in a perfume any day—but this... this feels just a little too surface for me. Not sure I want to walk around smelling like the flower aisle, all stems and leaves, but none of the blooms.

The note list here is surely missing a salt/mineral note, as well as something vegetal- possibly seaweed? It hits the nose as a photorealistic sea fragrance with some notes that would remind you of salt, rocks or sand. The citrus and fruit notes do well to lift it into something light and spritzy. Definitely not blind buy safe, smells "good" and interesting to me but maybe not the most practically wearable.

Corail Oscuro opens with a distinctly vegetal profile: carrot tops, green bell pepper, and marine notes. While I’m not sure I want to smell like this personally, I do find it surprisingly pleasant as a scent experience. It has a fresh, green, almost culinary quality that would be wonderful as a kitchen candle or ambient fragrance. Interesting and well-crafted, just not something I’d reach for as a perfume.

I have a few diptyque fragrances that I own and enjoy, but this is not one of them. On my skin, this smells like pickles. It’s very herbal and aromatic, but on my skin it reads strongly as pickle juice. I do not enjoy this fragrance however it may smell different with someone else’s skin chemistry.

i knew these notes before i even checked. incredibly green, almost vegetal, with half a lemon squeezed into it. to me it carries this briney sandalwood in it, in the same way santal 33 does. not a love, smells like salad :(

jalapeno perfume! not my favorite because i don't like the scent combination of fresh, spicy, and citrus together, but if you want to smell like a jalapeno... this is the scent for you :P

I like green fragrances but this is way to green for me. It opens really nice with the mandarin mixed with the green but mid and dry down is not my jam.

I don't quite agree with the people who say if a certain ingredient is not your thing then don't write a negative review; I think as long as it still stays respectful, it's okay. As expected, this is a negative review. I am a person who loves warm scents, sometimes gourmand, sometimes a little spicy and sweet; but I wanted to give green scents a try since the weather was heating up. This had something undeniably aquatic and fishy to it, to my nose. It's texture is 'airy' just like Lilyphea, but I wouldn't describe this as thin, or subtle. Maybe it is still thin to somebody who likes how this smells, but it's the opposite of subtle, the sillage and projection is undeniably strong. Its fishy, salty, vegetal (green) and almost salad-like nature really haunted me for many many hours. Even as a hater, I can't deny the artistry involved in making this scent. There is a lot of complexity to it, the scent it recreates seems to derive from a few real-life scent memories people could have. I feel like I've smelled parts of this while at sea. And some parts just .. remind me of the taste of bitter salads. Lilyphea shares some of the greenness I detect in this fragrance, but that one is much more in my ballpark. Lilyphea fits my green hankerings. I hope this is helpful to someone - but I guess this just mainly helps people who might be considering blind buying this It's 1000% worth a sample or a decant IF you love green and / or aquatic scents. Not an aquatic-salty-vanilla, it doesn't carry any sweetness. Unless you're talking the subtle sweetness you get from munching on raw vegetables. All that said, hate how this smells, sorry.

Smells like green bell pepper and projects like an abusive ex. No thanks. What made it even worse is that it lasted over 12 hours on the back of my hand even after washing my hands multiple times. Inescapable fragrance. Got it as a sample at the Diptyque store. Will not be buying a full. Will not be using the rest of the sample and probably giving it away. Out of everything I've experienced from Diptyque so far, this is easily their worst one to me and it's not close at all.

All diptique scents are la la la fragrances. little bit of fresh, little bit of green, bla bla bla, forgettable, poor longevity, poor sillage. This house doesnt have anything unique, anything iconic, no heavy hitters no nothing. Rosendo has its "5", MFK has its "grand soir and oud satin mood", FM has "musc ravageur or POAL", Xerjoff has "naxos". every house has something unique, they are known for. All Diptique has are watery fresh, boring and WEAK scents !

I don’t actually know how corals smell, because as a human being, evolution didn’t make me evolve into being able to experience water-borne smells. However, this does certainly convey the image of a very fresh and very nice coral reef, with a surprising amount of underwater citrus-plants. I think this is very safe, and very easy to like. Some reviews below make a good analysis of the composition itself, I will not go into detail. If you know Geranium odorata , this has a similar feeling to it, but perhaps the quality is a notch better (as I tend to feel Geranium odorata is very nice, although a bit too synthetic). This feels less synthetic – thank God considering the price point. For me, it’s a citrus-floral-aquatic-freshie in that exact order. It’s not salty, but has a rather subtle aquatic quality to it. It’s really not anything exceptional, but as an everyday perfume, it’s perfectly safe, polite and enjoyable. Considering the price, there is no way on earth I would pay this amount. If it was half the price, it would make a lot more sense. I think this makes for a perfect example for discussing the issues of inflation in the perfume market. I consider it almost political to boycot ridiculous mark-ups like this.
