Eau Capitale Eau de Parfum

And here we are again. I, who don’t get along with the chypre genre, find myself loving and talking about Diptyque’s first chypre, a perfume dedicated to the city of Paris, the capital. But this chypre deviates from the original, or traditional, formula. It is fresher and airier, it is subversive, less suffocating, not opulent, and less dense than a real chypre should be. The mossy component does not overwhelm the other accords, leaving more space for flowers and other fresh and greenish ingredients. It has a vintage touch, but it’s modern at the same time. Eau Capitale smells of woods, cold and warm spices, a little floral, earthy, and slightly soapy. I must say that if you expect to find a comparison with Frederic Malle’s Portrait of a Lady here, know that you are in the wrong place. My writing is an ode to this masterpiece by Olivier Pescheux without comparison. As soon as I spray it, the Diptyque DNA spreads through the air. I don’t know why, but I understand that it is a perfume from that brand, which I immediately associate with another creation centred on the rose, L'Ombre dans L'Eau Eau de Parfum. I had imagined something like this, a rose-patchouli combination, and I’m glad I guessed right. What I immediately get are the balsamic, camphorated, mentholated and slightly sweaty nuances that belong to the cumin seeds, and a handful of pink pepper flavours, the bitter zest of the citrus. The pepper is the first deviation from a classic chypre. The omnipresent bergamot is unripe, green and tart. There is a tart sweetness here, but what dominates is the cold spiciness of the pink pepper and cumin. Below, a whispering rose hits my nose nicely, with slightly metallic tones that recall geranium. Don’t worry if you are against cumin, as it lives for a few moments and then disappears. Also, it could depend on the reaction to my skin and the weather conditions of this Italian winter. So, Eau Capitale announces itself as a sweaty and dirty pink essence, with spicy and fruity tones, not rough but detectable. I let it sit for a while, and the scented rose, a dark garnet, becomes the star of the show. It is a workable mix of Turkish and Bulgarian quality, smooth, and well-blended with the peppery opening and the looming musk. The bloody rose comes out green, waxy, musky and dewy, with a manly, almost dirty, not gelatinous, not decaying slant. It has a lot of depth and never sits heavily. When I think of the rose, I do not imagine a bud at the top of a thorny stem and ready to bloom, whose scent does not spread and you have to stick your nose in to smell it, but petals of a now-wilted rose falling on a carpet of muddy, withered leaves and getting dirty with damp earth and soaking up morning dew, and the air around with a musky aroma can be felt even from a distance. There is a crash in the heart among the leaves and flowers. If you have a trained nose, you will detect a bit of warm spiciness in the heart, courtesy of a hint of clove pods and cinnamon bark. I also detect a honeyed aroma, which I am surprised comes from the fat yellow ylang-ylang and a smidgen of white jasmine oil. I love florals worked this way, which takes a genderless, modern and energetic direction. Woods, leaves and amber make up the last phase. As expected, the moss is not too heavy, as evernyl replaces oakmoss, but it is similar to modern musk, with the dominant sapidity, smoke and woodiness of the ambrofix molecule. The more it dries, the more the amber facets grow. Also, the patchouli present from the beginning is very herbal and much more prominent and brings that depth to counter the blooms, sometimes revealing woody and rooty vetiver tones. Ultimately, what stays close to the skin leaving a seductive trail is a patch of sharp and pungent amber sapidity and woodiness, which we found in many modern niche and indie creations. If you appreciate longevity and trail, Eau Capital will not disappoint. It is quite powerful and lasts quite a long time. Because of the nuances, I could detect wearing it on a gloomy day in February, I consider it ideal for mid-season, but it could reserve some pleasant surprises on humid summer evenings. What starts with feminine traits changes and evolves towards more masculine traits. It is a wonderful perfume, for sure. I wrote this review based on a bottle I have owned since January 2025.

Eau Capitale, to me, harkens to the chypres of yore (as in the mighty 80’s) but done in a modern way, with its ups and downs. It echoes stuff like Diva, Scherrer, Parfum de Peau, Knowing, Jacomo’s Parfum Rare, even something modern like Superstitious. It’s got the feel of a proper chypre, but alas it lacks what they used to have; oakmoss, stamina, and that entrancing embrace that made you either love them or loathe them. Eau Capitale opens bright and shiny, with just enough bergamot and aldehydes to make it instantly feel like a chypre. But, it feels washed down, kinda diluted, and after a while, it smells closer to a modern rose/patch perfume, moving close to something like Soir de Lune rather than Eau du Soir for example. The heart is mostly about rose, but unlike something like Tobacco Rose which showcases a black/red rose, here we get a lighter version. It smells like dew on pink buds, more geranium than rose. It smells natural but younger, fresher, brighter. As the drydown approaches, the patch gets a push to the front, and the slightly dirty musk cocktail makes the whole smell far more interesting, far more vibrant. It’s like an 80’s powerhouse seen through an Instagram filter. It dances between echoing the past, smelling futuristic (not modern) and getting more interest from me. It has base notes, something sorely lacking in modern fragrances, and what seemed to be missing in the opening, suddenly appears. As it dries down completely, I’m reminded of the green bite of Scherrer mostly, with a touch of Diva’s rose, and it smells as if there’s actually oakmoss. I love it. I love it because unlike current reformulated versions of the above classics, which have been cheapened down to poor copies, this feels as if it was made with care. It has evolution, and after a nice opening, albeit a bit dull, it becomes alive, it dances on skin and starts to show strength. Imagine you’re on a train, the Eau Capitale train, and every stop along the way is one of the above fragrances. Every time you stop, a piece of them gets on the train, and along the ride they mix with each other creating this here, Eau Capitale. At the end of the ride you have something that smells like and at the same time not like them, with a futuristic approach. It smells old and new, vintage and modern, truly French chic and absolutely beautiful. It could have been a super modern Paco Rabanne (the king of futuristic) chypre experiment! And while it doesn’t have all the ingredients that were available 40 years ago, it smells decidedly chypre; it’s got the panache, the style and the class. And fortunately, not a single woody aromachemical to be smelt! Very good sillage and excellent longevity!

Testing Eau Capitale EDP from a 2 ml Diptique official sample. I really like Eau Capitale. It’s a very beautiful, fresh, realistic blend of bright, pink rose with spicy pink pepper sweetened by juicy bergamot and refreshing, green but very smooth and clean patchouli leaves. Has a bit of earthiness and woodiness and seems to be a fairly long lasting. Usually patchouli does that to most perfumes, it enriches and gives contrast, depth and makes them stand out! Nothing out of this world as far as the composition goes, but the natural oils seem to be of a good quality, in the right proportions and blended masterfully, creating a strong and vibrant rose centred perfume. Smells very French, clean and chic, but elegant and expensive in the same time. Versatility wise, I would go as far as to say that it would be an awesome year round scent, it’s strong enough to face well the lowest temperatures but not overwhelming to choke you in the highest temperatures. Worth mentioning that it might be too much for some in those hot and humid summer days if sprayed heavily. If sprayed lightly, it would work beautifully even those days. Oliver Pescheux, who sadly passed away last year, created some memorable and interesting scents throughout his career. Eau Capitale is just one example of his incredible talent and ability to make perfumes that would take his legacy beyond his lifetime! I am not necessarily interested into adding a new rose scent to my collection in this moment in time, but if I were, Eau Capitale EDP would be top of my list for sure. Reminds me, from my collection, of Fleur Musc by Narciso Rodriguez with the mention that Eau Capitale is more of a rose/pink pepper/patchouli forward scent, while Fleur Musc is more of a rose/peony/violet/sweet scent. From the fragrances listed in the reminds me of section on Fragratica, I am not familiar with any of them so I can’t comment on the potential similarities. It’s not overly expensive for the quality and potency of the juice. And the iconic Diptique bottle you get. As French as you can get...

Like a deep, soft bed of rose petals and earthy leaves. I think this beautifully elegant and sophisticated perfume is one of the most appealing and well-balanced creations of contemporary perfumery. Just look at the (mostly) glowing reviews below and comparisons with another contemporary classic, Portrait of a Lady. I find PoaL very Gothic, which is not how I'd describe Eau Capitale, but they share the rose/patchouli combo and I think a sort of red rose/berry, jamminess, but where PoaL's jamminess is met with dark dry patchouli, lending it that wild Gothic noir quality, Eau Capitale leads us somewhere more luminous. The packaging design inspired by coloured glass is spot on because it's as though you're experiencing a transparent rose and green bergamot, laced with the dark raspiness of dry patchouli, then sprinkled with the sparkle of pink pepper. The whole arranged in perfect design. It's so lovely and I'm surprised it's taken me a while to acquire a full bottle. Maybe because the other quite similar perfume that vied for my attention was Lumiere Noire by MFK. I doubt I'd buy both unless I was feeling very flush. What edges it for me is the sheer prettiness of Eau Capitale. I think it's a little easier on the nose. (Lumiere Noire feels more classic with its rich narcissus). I'd reach for it in the cooler (though not freezing) months as it's very distinct and has good sillage, it has an edge of warmth so it works well in cooler weather. Wearable by day if you're ok with a fairly strong statement. Excellent for any party or elegant evening event. Eau Capitale is very French - poised, apparently uncontrived but in fact perfectly coordinated. Sexy but not sultry, flirty but classy. A lot of perfumes whose sillage works as a statement perfume for evening can be uncomfortably strong for the wearer, but this just wafts around in an ever intriguing cloud that's easy on the nose yet distinct. Full review write on June 20, 2023 (30749119, USD 110 for 75 ml. bottle) Finally, I have chance to own her, Eau Capitale. for me, Eau Capitale stays true to original review writing 6 months back. This is very beautiful spicy rose-patchouli scent. Patchouli is a bit more prominent than rose, and is providing clean / neutral aspect. The scent stays in line in Diptyque manner a refine, neutral scent. It is very perfect for everyday wear. I will probably try rogue verlour by YSL and probably end quest for Rose Patchouli combo. remains frim 8/10 ===== Update 1 on October 6, 2024 I have recently tested all my diptyque fragrances and after I have actualized Eau Capitale along with 34 Boulevard Saint Germain (EDT) is only 2 fragrance, I choose in my collection. The reason why Eau Capitale resonate with me so much because the way the scent blend, really recall how Capital people would smell like. Fizzy Fruity Rose almost Blackcurrant rose stay in centric along with dry patchouli I known from Tempo. However, the characteristic of dry Patchouli is not really prominent here. Rather, merge with rose create very modern floral rose & patchouli combo. This is very well behave rose-patchouli compare to other profile. Techincally, Patchouli in Tempo dance with Classic Dry rose of Diptyue. Why won't I like it..? I like this so much.. ===== (Original review test on 25 December 2022) Sniff test on skin. Oh I love this, I can’t explain. I think patchouli really help overall feel. It’s a dry rose, as the time passed by it becomes more muted green/grey, feel like a pensive sky of luxury city. I think or Snow from hunger game when I wear this. This would his smell. Due to scent profile this is so similar to Gris Dior. Might sniff them both and consider FB. (But this profile might not actually meet my personality) Scent is weaker than SL LFFB To be consideration. 8/10
