The scent starts with its leaves in your face, almost overwhelmingly - you fall shocked into a bramble of rose. The green dominates for a while, a florist's freshly-cut rose, as a stem is selected and its leaves trimmed. Now the rose flower slowly reveals itself: a pale pink rose from heaven. A rose of nobility. A truly photorealistic rose - by far the most so that I've smelled, a rose that is utterly unsatisfied with any portrayals of itself that do not revel in the taste of its living flower. A rose blossom that begs to be held, inhaled, a cold rose of longing rather than one of passion. A stiff green branch of a stem, and a heavy flower, tight-petaled, dewdropped, and singular. And then the magic trick of the scent. Beginning green, edging into pink... and then the scent disappears. The pink still lingers in the air, wafting and shy but persistent - but you can't find it on your skin. Only when you continue searching your skin do you find that the petals have melded with it, like oil massaged all the way in. You find your skin has become petal-like; not the rose aspect but the petal aspect itself has melded with your body's own scent. The rose still dances on the air, but your skin becomes your own sort of flower - sweet, utter, and elusive. More than development, this scent has dialogue, and on me it created a buttery and earthy nectary amber. The blackcurrant and its leaves do not even complement the towering rose they grow alongside - they mimic it. Again, this scent is in three parts: picture a colored pencil drawing of a rose. A brittle and rich green stem, and a sketched pink blossom so pale that it almost becomes paper-colored. Any blackcurrant here is in the form of a deep purple-red shading layered atop this drawing, deepening the bite of the stem and the lushness of the petals - but it does not draw the shadow, it is still drawing the rose! The blackcurrant fruit disappears, it sacrifices its own identity to become the crushed and wilted side to those heavy rose petals. The blackcurrant leaves likewise disappear into the rose's dense green bramble, making it denser, stranger, and yet more roselike. But perhaps it is the blackcurrant that enables the magical link between scent and skin. I've never seen anything like it. Impeccable art design. One of the best bottles in history. Yes - a melancholic springtime, a poignant passion, a languid raincloud ennui. You smell the rose as a plant because you are lying on the shore next to it, half-hidden in the bower, half-fainted. I'm extremely charmed that the EDT and EDP have reversed monochrome color schemes forming a perfect Odette and Odile respectively, whose tears could not be more fitting for this clear, somber, and unprecedentedly beautiful scent. The Shadow on the Water: Rose of All Roses. A requirement for any devotee of the plant.

L'Ombre dans l'Eau: A Green Rose's Ephemeral Dance 🌹💚 My journey with this scent has been a whirlwind of miniatures, travel sizes, and in-store spritzes. I've even collected those precious 2ml samples that come with full-size Diptyque purchases and tried blind buying of a fake version from AliExpress (talk about dedication!). Oh, fragrance lovers! Prepare for a rollercoaster of emotions with Diptyque's L'Ombre dans l'Eau. This scent has me utterly bewitched, yet simultaneously scratching my head in bewilderment. First, the good: Picture a lush, verdant garden after a spring rain. Vibrant rose petals peek through dewy leaves, while a hint of peppery blackcurrant adds intrigue. It's modern, fresh, and utterly captivating. Rose scent is definitely present but not as a standard old rose scent, more resembles scent of modern garden roses. But here's the thorny issue - this beauty is as fleeting as a summer romance! Even the parfum version vanishes faster than you can say "reapply." At this price point, I expected more staying power. Zara's Jo Malone scents last just as long for a fraction of the cost! So this one is not meeting the mark in terms of longevity for its price in 2024. Curiosity got the better of me, and I ventured into the world of Ali Express knockoffs. Shockingly, the scent was 99% there! But beware, dear readers - the packaging screamed "fake" louder than a karaoke night gone wrong. Save yourself the embarrassment (and potential leaks). Despite its shortcomings, I find myself circling this fragrance (original Diptyque full size version) like a moth to a flame. There's just something irresistibly charming about its green rose heart. Diptyque, if you're listening: Please, PLEASE create a more intense version that lingers! Give us the lasting power this gorgeous scent deserves. Until then, I'll be here, frantically reapplying every 90 minutes, dreaming of a world where such beauty endures. My Spring/Summer signature. The vibe of this fragrance can be interpreted in so many ways, it can be dark, deep and brooding with wet green thorny red roses, thunderstorms and Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, the black swan amongst mist on the water. Oppositely it can also feel bright, luscious, sparkling blackcurrant and dewy leaves drenched in sunlight reflecting off calm waters; the white swan. L'Ombre dans l'eau can be Odette and just as easily be Odile. This is why it works perfectly for the unpredictable British summer, one minute bright sunshine, the next heavy downpours of rain. (You could also wear it in September maybe, kind of has a similar smell to brambles and blackberry picking.) Aside from what feelings the fragrance evokes to my nose the notes listed have changed recently, I think it used to also have bergamot listed in the top notes as well as blackcurrant berries and ambergris in the middle and base notes. I think the new notes description is more correct in some ways as there is no top, middle and base. Because the fragrance is rather linear, but I do think think there is some bergamot in the initial spritz which contributes to the sparkly fizzy opening. To me the black currant leaf and rose and the most prominent notes throughout the perfume, actual black currant berry I think becomes more apparent quite a few hours into the dry down. Diptyque does natural photorealistic smelling scents really well and along with Philosykos this is the best example of capturing real life smells and bottling them. I prefer this to the EDT as the rose is deeper and more developed and the projection on it is insane leaves a long trail. Longevity is brilliant too and will last from morning until late into the night. This has some comparisons that it is similar to Synthetic Jungle from Frederic Malle which I don't see at all, If anything it has some similar DNA to Eau Capitale also by Diptyue although the rose is less intense and no patchouli, there is also some similar qualities with Jo Malone Blackberry & Bay. But I've yet to really find something as unique as this.

Deep red rose with its stems and thorns. Blackcurrant and its buds and leaves. Petitgrain lends fresh, stem-like, sappy and green touches. This is a dark, red rose—potpourri like. The fragrance opens up very green like a damp, humid garden after rainfall. I get stems and crushed blackcurrant leaves. Then comes a lot of juicy blackcurrant pearls intertwined with the rose right after on my skin, the blackcurrant here gives off a feeling akin to Giorgio Armani’s Sí but less sweet syrup, more pulpy and fresh. The rose feels dry in stark contrast to the saturated, sappy nature of green stems and crushed leaves in here, but still full, voluptuous and velvety but like the edges of the petals are beginning to dry up. The buds and leaves of the blackcurrant and the stem-like nuances linger throughout the whole wear on my skin, however the exquisite potpourri rose and blackcurrant dominate and the scent that radiates from the warmth of my pulse points is just incredible. What an intriguing offering from Diptyque. I would wear this year round as the darker rose and blackcurrant are suitable for cooler months but the green vein that runs the whole course of the wear could hold this up in warmer months. This could be a signature scent on the right person and I find it to be quite unisex. Guys should not be afraid of roses! Especially this one. This persists extremely well on my skin, 2 sprays on each wrist at 3.30pm and I can still smell it at 8am the following morning! A trace of delicately sweet blackcurrant and rose, still ever so slightly green. The picture through the back of the glass bottle really illustrates L'Ombre Dans L'Eau accurately, a beautiful snippet of nature but dark. Gothic. A little haunting, perhaps. Black swan’s jungle. Roses and their thorns beneath moss. Overhanging trees in the lake’s reflection dancing with the ripples from the rainfall during the final moments of dusk. An intoxicating fragrance that captures the essence of a secret garden after a summer storm, L'Ombre Dans L'Eau by Diptyque is arguably one of the most evocative masterpieces of artistic perfumery. Although the Eau de Parfum version was launched in 2012, the DNA of this fragrance dates back to 1983, confirming itself as a timeless classic that challenges passing fads. Unlike many floral perfumes that focus on sweetness, this creation by Serge Kalouguine is hyper-realistic, green and almost "wild". The Opening: You will be hit by an explosion of blackcurrant leaves. It is a pungent, sour, almost "crunchy" odor, reminiscent of the broken stalk of a plant. The petitgrain accentuates this citrus and woody freshness. The Heart: Here the Damascus Rose emerges. But be careful: it is not the classic dusty boudoir rose. It is a wet rose, still attached to the bush, surrounded by damp earth and thick vegetation. The Evolution: Compared to the Eau de Toilette version, the Eau de Parfum is denser and deeper. The blackcurrant flower adds a slightly fruity but never cloying note, maintaining a masterful balance between the acidic and the velvety. Excels in spring and rainy days, where the humidity enhances the sap notes. Mood Introspective, sophisticated, natural. It is the perfume of those who do not want to "impress" in an obvious way, but leave a trail of mystery. L'Ombre Dans L'Eau is not a perfume for everyone. If you love sweet, vanilla scents or "clean" office classics, it might be too bold or too green. However, if you are looking for an olfactory photograph of a riverside garden, it is one of the best interpretations of rose and currant ever created. The name literally means "The shadow in the water". It is a fragrance that constantly plays on the contrast between the light of the flowers and the darkness of the undergrowth.

Magical story in a bottle, mysterious, green and unique. One of my favorite fragrances. This is probably one of just few perfumes in the world that I really, really adore. (which I did not diyed myself) and which suits me perfectly with my skin chemistry. (I`m very picky because I mostly mix my own oil perfume blends out of essential oils, and it is hard for me to find something unusual enough, but not heavy. I love two types of fragrances - Ethereal-Aquatic-floral and those foresty/woodsy/green ones that are unique, unusual and " different " scents, scents that tell a story, but not heavy, oriental, powdery nor sweet. I also dislike citruses and almost all fruits, with exception of unripe berries. And this one is definitely unique, being green, but at the same time floral and woodsy and on me it has that airy essence, even though I first expected to be heavy. But it is not at all - at least not on me . Black currant and rose bring out this really mysterious, dreamy, enigmatic and perplexing, but at the same time green and enticing scent colors. It stays very long, scent lingers for hours, and on clothes - for days. It is a shame that it is so expensive. This one is probably the only one and most unique that I ever had, that does not fit into my typical go-to, ethereal/floral/aquatic category which I normally prefer, but it is just so unique and different. I re-purchased it several time over the years, when it was on sale. Perfume for life. Diptique and Jo Malone have both very peculiar, mystical, alluring and uniquely wonderful pieces in their collections, and each of these tells a story, I feel that this one is definitely my type of story in a bottle.

This scent y'all. This is the first scent I've ever found that might beat out my love for Tokyo Milk Marine Sel. I tested both the EDP & EDT on testing paper and the EDP on my skin. To me there is quite a big difference between the EDP and EDT on the first spray with the EDP being a bit darker and deeper of a scent and overall more well rounded. On my skin, the EDP is very vegetal, aquatic, and soily on the first spray. It smells exactly like a fresh cucumber in garden dirt after a hard rain. The overwhelming cucumber smell sticks around on me for about an hour. During that time the projection is moderate to large. After about an hour of dry down it begins to take on a deeper mossy/dirt scent while still retaining that aquatic rain note. For me this scent goes from smelling like a vegetable garden after a hard rain to smelling like an old, overgrown damp garden at night. On my skin the rose note is very minimally present and the black currant bud note is non existent. I get no fruit notes whatsoever and this is an entirely vegetal, soil, aquatic scent on me. The performance is excellent for me. After an hour the projection diminishes slightly but is still detectable. After 5 hrs my sister in law could still smell it from about 2 feet away (and loved it on me). After 12 hrs I could still smell it on myself but the projection at that point was very intimate. Overall I adore this scent and the EDP may become my go to Spring/Summer daily perfume.

i'm not someone who particularly cares about having a specific signature scent but if i had to choose it would be this. it is bitter and unforgiving to the point that when i sprayed it for the first time i hated it and was reminded of thanksgiving dinner. the harsh green was almost herb like. however, after i wore it for a day i fell in love. this is unforgivingly green, entirely itself and beautiful in those elements. once those borderline nauseating bitter green notes (which i have come to love for how unapologetically strong and present they are) evaporate, you are left with this fresh, bright, still a little bit bitter-green, beautiful rose. i love the smell of roses but i dislike most rose perfumes because they smell synthetic and off, but the rose in here, while not smelling realistic, is exactly what i love about the smell of roses. l'ombre dans l'eau is a beautiful budding rose covered in sharp bitter thorns right as winter thaws into spring, and maybe the dew is tinged with pesticides. i have not smelled anything quite like this. it is entirely unique. bitter and beautiful. completely itself without trying to mock anything else. the longevity is amazing. i slept over at my boyfriend's place while wearing this and a week later it still lingered! i would also say perfect for most seasons and weather, except maybe very humid and hot tropical areas.

(this review is for the solid perfume, I didn’t see a specific page for it) love this guy!!! not overly feminine, it’s a very unique smell, extremely fresh, green, a bit herbal. the main floral is rose but which is definitely present but i wouldn’t call it a “rose scent”, you get the smell of wild tea roses along with their stems and leaves as well as possibly some other white florals. i get very little fruitiness from the blackcurrant, if anything it’s the scent of the berries still on the bush. minimal projection esp with the solid perfume after it settles in, which is perfect for me as i don’t want something everyone in the room can smell. the fresh green notes are most prominent initially, then as it settles it becomes a bit of a dry, powdery floral that i also enjoy a lot- i was worried it would dry down into a cloying, “perfumey” scent that id get tired of so i was pleasantly surprised at how it retains its freshness. also impressed with its longevity- even through a work day involving frequent handwashing i get subtle whiffs all day. i noticed i didnt enjoy the dry down of the EDT as much after i sampled in store, so if that’s something keeping you from buying try the solid! i have never regularly worn perfume before, and im very happy with this as my first major scent i can’t see myself getting tired of it for everyday wear.

This is my kind of 'freshy'. Clean, green, very natural, a bit floral. Sour - but not in the way that sticks in the back of my throat, just an absence of sweetness. On my skin I feel it gives the impression of a wet and heavy garden after a large downpour. I grow blackcurrants and this is very realistic to my nose. I also grow tomatoes and love the scent, I don't perceive that note on my skin at all, although perhaps a hint when sprayed on clothing. For myself it's those heaving wet blackcurrant bushes and the fruit I've just collected from them. Walking back through the darker and greener part of the garden (avoiding snails) in air that is slowly warming up after the rain, and carrying the piercing scent of a striking rose in the background. There isn't enough sun yet to make the sweeter flowers wake up and shine, so it's all about the greenery. It scratches my Philosykos itch. I love that fragrance so so much...and it lasts literal minutes on my skin. *sigh. I am ashamed how quickly I blasted through a full bottle of that beauty. This smells nothing like it, but it fills that gap in my collection. By that I mean I find this to be a non-perfume-y fragrance that I crave on warmer days, or as an antidote to sweetness. Plus it lasts for several hours and radiates well, which is all I need.

I got a box of 5 Diptyque Eaux De Parfum 10ml flacons as a present many years ago. The box contained Tam Dao, Fleur de Peau, Philosykos, Do Son, and finally l'Ombre Dans l'Eau. I just realise I bought a full bottle of three of them throughout the years, except Do Son and Philosykos, which the latter I will get at some point for summer holiday, maybe even this summer. I didn't like l'Ombre Dans l'Eau at first, too serious, and perhaps a bit melancholic, I stereotyped it for somebody more mature than me. But through the years I really started to enjoy the contrast within the composition, the opening of the hyper realistic blackcurrent and bulgarian rose, which smells deep green, and there is a hint of something sweet, and then quite a classic light musk on the base. It's really lovely, and I never smelled anything else like it. There is something about Dyptique, that makes their compositions smell so natural, so realistic. The more perfumes I own, the less I care what is marketed to a certain age or a certain gender, so apparently I am that mature person that I projected this perfume to be for some years ago. I bought a full size a few weeks ago and I wear this daily ever since, and I love it.

An absolutely singular scent, there's really no respectable comparison. L'Ombre Dans L'Eau has a curious and unsettling name, "the shadow in the water", that somehow captures its unforgettable contradictions. Both bracing and smooth, fresh and dark, cool and embracing, uplifting and heavy. If like the brand says, this is a "stroll through an English garden", it's one dreamt up by Aleister Crowley and maintained by Thomas Shelby. A read through of the notes does this one no justice, so there's no point for me to really discuss. I'll just say that while there's fruit here, to call it fruity is somewhat misleading. The rose is most certainly of another name. The defiance of categorization here makes a direct road to unisex wear and I'm so curious about how this wears on different people. On me the sharp edges get a little gauzy, but don't lose their intent. Evolution isn't surprising, but surprise was already the first impression. It just draws you in a bit more over time. I love the challenging, unexpected but very realistic glamour at work in this fragrance. It makes me want to dye my hair a glossy black and trim everything with lace.

I can't believe I haven't left a review for what I consider a signature scent ♡ Speaking frankly, I initially chose this scent because I thought the swan artwork was cute lol. But over the past few years, it's become my go-to and I always find myself enjoying how rich and full-bodied this fragrance is. Reiterating what many people have shared, it's a very damp and green rose, growing in the shaded corner of a garden. Diptyque's copy mentions, "...roses and blackcurrant berries in the palm of the hand..." which sounds pretty accurate. It's not a few berries plucked from a single branch, but bountiful handfuls and basket-fuls of dark, juicy berries paired with a central rose. Really obsessed with it, and I always feel more like myself when I spray this before leaving the house. **EDIT: I just wanted to share that this is the personal fragrance version of Diptyque's very popular, BAIES candle, which was major in the home/lifestyle sphere around 2018. If you liked that, then you'll love this.

Applies deeply warm, spicy rose that's exotic with edge from dry incense that creates a nighttime desert bazar. Florals for guys are tricky and something I've especially explored. This is one of the all time best. Even though rose is prominent it's confident like leather. Fruity sweetness grows, making it more widely likable/yummy. Smoky rose keeps it classy; creating a compelling contrast. Projects really well and for a long time. Addictively alluring. Moody and sultry. Unquestionably bottle worthy. 1ST REVIEW: Bursts with gorgeously delicious figgy green! Instantly likable. Soft cucumber/tomato leaf and fruity blackcurrant. Not sweet or powdery while both relaxing and uplifting. Addictive streak doesn’t let up. Refreshing juicy pineapple, creamy rose, and earthy moss. Clean with impressive projection. Rare for a fresh scent to be so exciting. Even though prominent floral leans feminine, as a dude, I can’t get enough - tremendously addictive. Masterful, but not shy.

I recently went on a hyperfocused quest to find a new signature scent and I think this might be it, but I'm not sure if that's because I like the fragrance so much, or because I love (and relate to) the image this brings to mind: a garden with roses and dark currants, it's been raining, someone walked over the flowers and fruit bruising them and releasing their scents, there are stems and grass mixed in, the sky is dusty pink, the chill begins to set. I think the name is perfect - it's a scent that walks the line of balance between fresh and messy, sweet and dark / shadowy, simple but not quite, and always in motion. The scent is feminine but in a ying-yang sense of energies than gender ideals - I would also love this on a man. Having written this review I have no doubt that I love this and feel like it really is very me. I found some more exciting or emotional scents on this quest (Magic Mushroom Bohoboco) but this will make me happy everyday.

L'ombre Dans L'eau is a unisex, photorealistic rose scent (the plant as a whole, not just the flower; keep this in mind) with a tiny hint of acidity from the blackcurrant that leans towards it being fresh rather than jammy/juicy/fruity. It's interestingly deep and dense yet also very green, rosy, and brings up nostalgia without making you smell like a grandma. If you prefer a slightly lighter (and generally more feminine) version, go for the EDT one. If you want a fruitier scent, I'd suggest go for Jo Malone's Blackberry & Bay. Both of them are easier to wear daily compared to this one (which I also only use on special occasions). I wore the EDP version daily for a week and while the perfume provoked some "what are you wearing?" questions, most people were asking due to its uniqueness and interesting profile rather than them actually loving the scent per se. Nevertheless, the complexity is what makes this my favorite perfume!

I think L’ombre dans l’eau is the loudest and the most long lasting in Diptyque collection. What I really love in it, it is how natural it smells! I can really imagine lake with the beautiful rose garden and fig trees that were just watered🦢⛲️🌹🌳. It’s so ever changing that I want to call it multidimensional, every few hours you will smell some notes louder than the others, and that will lasts for a next few days till it will be totally gone. I don’t know whether it is just to me so but whenever I spray it on me, I have a feeling that I have applied perfume oil, but I have that feeling only at first few hours. It has a very strong sillage, that’s why it instantly transfers you to different dimension, somewhere in nature, so just let your imagination work together with fragrance 🏞

Excuse my hyperbole but the first time I smelled this I almost (or maybe I secretly did) cried. When I was little my grandparents grew blackcurrants and roses in their garden. I used to LOVE the smell of crushing the blackcurrant leaves and watching the aphids and ants ruining the roses in their little, dark, damp garden. This perfume transports me back to that time and the times when my grandparents were still alive and healthy. It is very green and bitter, the leaves of blackcurrant rather than the fruit, and the stems and thorns alongside the roses. My husband said it smells like toilet freshener which annoyed me a lot. He followed that up with "but toilet freshener smells nice, you know there's a reason why people use it". So yay, different perspectives. 10/10 from me.

like finding yourself in a lush rose garden during a thunderstorm, picking off the petals and squeezing them tightly in your fists. Damp, dewy greens topped off with an almost jammy rose. lasts forever and apparently you can smell me from across the room anytime I wear it. kind of like if eau rose and philosykos had a baby, and definitely smells like the baies candle. whenever i bought it, it was definitely out of my comfort zone, but as i've gotten more and more into niche fragrances, this is one that i always go back to because it really is mystifying. worth the hype and worth the price. my mom once told me a story about how when she was a little girl, she fell out of a window and into a rose bush. thankfully she was okay, but i wonder if it smelled anything like this.

I've had samples of this over the years and have always enjoyed dabbing it on. Today, I found I had a good sized sample with an atomizer, so I could properly spritz myself. The scent of this deep, vegetal rosy earthiness combined with a cool cloudy day here is making me ever so happy. I LOVE how natural this smells -- like poking your head through a tomato vine to smell a single, perfect rose - a deep, dark rose at that. I can totally understand the comparison to MM's 'From the Garden', and call me crazy - I might get both and layer the two! THAT'S how much I love this earthy, raw, authentic garden smell. I'm loving you, L’Ombre Dans L’Eau (what a beautiful name and even more beautiful bottle!), and need to bring you home soon! This is stunning.

This perfume smells exactly like winter's end when the birds start chirping, the ground starts to thaw, and green things start to burst forth from the earth. It smells like the newness of spring when the air is still cool and April showers have started to moisten the air. I don't get very much evolution with this fragrance. On me it stays pretty linear: green, damp, thick, and rosy. Sillage is moderate and longevity is superb. Didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I do, but LDL surprised me! Definitely a clean scent that lingers for a long time! I could see this being worn year round easily, however this is superb in the spring and summer months. Definitely one of the longer lasting Diptyque fragrances. Can't wait to try L'Eau next!

Received a sample of the scent. The scent transports me to a foggy garden of greenery and shrubs where it has just rained - where the scent starts off very green and fresh, rather than grassy it is more mossy to me. As the day and scent goes by, pink roses bloom from the shrubs and the fresh rose scent emerges from the dewy garden. It is a beautiful floral scent that is not powdery nor bright, the scent is a little melancholic from the black currant leaf and the rose is not synthetic. Longevity is moderate to long-lasting & projection is moderate. I will be buying a full bottle as I think it is a great spring scent, it can be a safe daytime scent, although I think it would also be a great date-night scent as well.

A few months ago, in the dead of winter, I tried a sample of L'Ombre parfum and felt indifferent. The dominant cassis note felt out of place. Tried it again today and did a 360: this is the best green cassis and rose scent I have ever smelled. I need it, so pulled the trigger and bought a bottle. It still reminds me of YSL "in Love Again", a perfume I loved and wore in the 90's. But this feels less, due to a lack of a better word, abrasive. I can imagine I'm in a aromatic French garden filled with roses, grapes and figs. It feels so natural. I'm surprised by my turn-around. Incredible longevity and moderate projection. I'm looking forward to wearing this uplifting scent in the Spring and Summer.

picked out an absolutely beautiful swan and lotus flowered compact with a refillable solid perfume version of this as a belated valentine's present today. it's very green. a roomful of roses with freshly cut stems, more people snipping away as we speak. not a very complex scent. delicate, smooth, a ballerina in dappled woods next to a slow-moving stream. the solid perfume herself is impossibly silky to the touch. i read that she doesn't last as long as the spray, but it's fine. the compact is just so lovely. it's the sort of thing my children would see me using and wistfully tell others about after it's long been discontinued. i'm very excited to buy refills in different scents in the future.

Words that sold me to blind buy this fragrance: Gothic, exactly like their Baies candle (which is my favorite Diptyque candle) like fresh real roses. I am so glad I did. I went from writing off Diptyque perfumes as not for me to falling in love with 3 (L'Eau Papier, Philosykos and L'Ombre Dans L'Eau! It does smell like their Baies candle which is the perfect mouthwatering tart fresh mix of Blackberry and black baccara roses with stems. I also detect fresh purple grapes. I find the scent to be similar to Jo Malone's Blackberry and Bay only more intense with sweet wine added in. Gothic and sexy is right too. I imagine royalty of the Unseelie court in a cloud of this fragrance.

Very beautiful, natural wet rose garden smell, stem and all. Very green, no sweetness, like an atmospheric high end scented candle which seems a theme for Diptyque. Its more perfume-y, wearable sister would be Paul Smith which is quite a photorealistic rose too but softer and sweeter. This lasts and lasts on me. Not quite full day, but a good 10 hours definitely and on clothes it lingersfor a day or two. It projects beautifully, wafts up during the heat and blossoms subtly during cool rain. Not for winter. I've read someone describe Diptyque as "aromatherapy in perfume form" and I feel like L'Ombre Dans L'Eau is the perfect showcase of that.

Call me basic, but I just wanted a perfume version of Diptyque’s Baies candle and this didn’t disappoint. It’s slightly more green than the candle, making it quite fresh and dewy on the skin. Black currant is the star here, paired perfectly with rose. The combination is distinctly fruity, but not in a saccharine kind of way. Think lychee- both floral and juicy. The way it plays with the green and earthy notes gives you the full picture of the garden- the flowers, the fruits, and the leaves. It’s very refreshing and uplifting to wear, perfect for spring or fall. I love to wear it on a brisk morning walk with my dog.

I sprayed this B E A U T Y at Nordstrom today and ........oh.my.gosh....... I have to get a full bottle of this!!! I have no idea why I was immediately transported to my childhood... I must have smelled something similar to this when I was a young child because I felt like I was 7 years old again for an instant...weird, huh? Crazy how certain scents can do this to people... After reading the different comments, I can see that L’Ombre dans l’Eau is a polarizing scent. It’ll either transport you to Heaven or it’ll take you to hell (or a public toilet which isn’t far from hell)... Full bottle, you will be mine!

Coming here because i just sprayed Malle’s Synthetic Jungle at a counter here in Jakarta. I was instantly remembered L’Ombre dans L’eau. I love Synthetic Jungle as this kind of scent is really my cup of tea. They are both indeed in the same ballpark, where L’Ombre has rose and blackcurrant as more pronounced notes in the drydown, while SJ has strong Patchouli smell in the drydown. L’Ombre dans L’eau is the kind of fragrance that I only wear in special occasion during the day. It is like a witchcraft that puts spell on me to be more confident, happy, and everything is alright with the world around.

This scent is a surprise. The first time I spritzed it I instantly thought it's either going to be the kind of scent that will get really annoying or be completely addictive. Luckily for me it's been the latter. I really adore the greenness and freshness that remains with you throughout the dry down, but there's also a slight dusty/musky floral note that weaves in and out. It's also simply such a pretty scent! The rose is wonderful and lends itself well to the grassy vegetation that surrounds it. L’Ombre Dans L’Eau feels classic in the best of ways and definitely not boring. What a delight!

I’ve grown to really love this scent I think it’s one of Diptyque masterpieces! It used to remind me too much of the candle but I feel like it’s different enough in its own right after comparing the two scents. Mainly being this one is so much more green and slightly more bitter than the candle! Overall this is a really beautiful unique rose! Nothing jammy and nothing dated smelling. Just completely natural thorny rose with an emphasis on the stems and leaves. I feel like this is perfectly unisex and modern despite the original fragrance being around 30+ years. Pretty amazing stuff

Wonderful fleshy, carnal rose, spring rose in the fullness of its marvelous potential: lush, inebriating, wet, totally soaked in humidity and morning dew, immersed in the thick and evergreen undergrowth among worn, macerated cassis leaves and fruits totally consumed by time and weather, a citrus note emerges which delicately outlines the entire olfactory evolution. Elegant, sumptuous fragrance, an imperial rose with regal fruity, citrus, acidic and sour notes of ripe cassis. It unleashes emotions and sensations that warm the soul. Olfactory experience that I highly recommend.

Currant and roses, the combination which is bewitching, when it is balanced. In this case, it is: a photorealistic opening is green and vivid, then elegant and clean rose step forward. The fragrance is simple but beautiful, charismatic, graceful... My only complain is, that it melts on my skin into milky-musky accord. I am not sure how is that possible and I miss the greenness of first minutes. Nonetheless, this perfume is divine. --- Projection isn't strong, longevity about 5 hours. I'd wear it in spring or autumn. (Agree with rewiew below: it has some melancholy indeed!)

I have always loved L'Ombre dans L'Eau and have owned the EDT for many years. I had two small issues with it: the almost unpleasantly sharp entrée and its longevity. The EDP arrived into my life today and I am fully happy now. It starts much softer and with more shadow than the piercingly bright first few minutes of the EDT. It feels rounder, smoother, more dreamy and has more of my childhood summer mornings' sun-dappled quality to it than the EDT. Plus it seems to last longer than its more fleeting sister. I love this scent so so much!

This is to the EDT as heavy silk brocade is to airy cotton. On my skin, rich greenery steals the show without astringency, and is joined by accents of tart smashed blackcurrant and rose jam. The musky deep drydown is delightful, as well. For me, wearable in any season. Just to counterbalance reviews which say that this isn't a date night fragrance, I will add that my fiancee (a dude) thinks this is the sexiest scent that I (a lady) own! Mayhap, it conjures the spirited romance of summertime al fresco trysts. Signature scent worthy!

Tried (and loved) the EDT a while back. The EDT's performance is stellar and the two are pretty similar. This one is maybe a shade deeper, with a more intense and legible rose at its heart. Both are deep, mossy green, darkened further and lent a tart edge by the inky purple cassis. A mouthwatering smell that's not food. Christina Rosetti's "Goblin Market" meets John Everett Millais' stunning, tragic tableau of Ophelia in the reeds. Pre-Raphaelite voluptuousness and fairy-tale romanticism, basically. Plus tomato vines.

I’m not really into rose perfumes. Got this in a mistake so I’m testing it out. Quite a strong realistic roses vapor surrounded me from my sprays, with all the blooms and leaves and stems included. Couldn’t get any other notes listed probably because the roses drowned them all. The greens wasn’t yucky like the top notes of Philosykos and blended well with the roses. Lasted over 10hrs with arm length silage on clothing. After that it was intimate silage for two more hrs. Then it became skin scent (off clothing).

so gorgeous- it’s green and floral and bright, but with the hint of the bitterness and almost dampness (?) that makes it more complex and adhere less to the artificial feeling you get sometimes with bright and clean scents; it’s sort of reminiscent of dew on leaves when you’re walking into a clearing of a forest early in the morning. a garden, yes, but it feels more like you’re smelling the growth and life of the garden, and not just its products. photorealistic but I still found it extremely wearable

L'Ombe dans L'Eau reminds me of a dewey Grecian garden Leda was probably being raped by the swan in. It smells like stamens and the reproductive organs of flowers. The name of the perfume kinda ominous af, like young girls playing in a grassy swamp being caught in dark webs, nap caught in bill. The scent of crushed nettles smells like running through brambles, and the kind of aquatic notes that come through this is like slipping on mossy rocks, the nightmarish dream of the swan it hot pursuit.

this is the perfume that made me convert from the powdery loving Chanel No5 as signature scent(yes don't hate me) to green earthy unique scent lover that i am now.....this is soo good,i tend to love fragrances that others love to hate, and this might be one of them..... imagine making out in a flower garden, your body weight crushing the surrounding leaves, fruits and flowers....it's very realistic scent like the perfumer just made the scent yesterday,bottled and sprayed on you today.....

Un odore di edera foglie e un sentore umido , come se si preannunciasse pioggia da li a poco. Malinconico, nostalgico, poetico!

This was the perfume I wore every single day for 10+ years of my life. It was my first real signature scent. However, I stopped being able to really smell it on myself after all these years. I continued to wear it because every person I'd dated in the last few years was seriously obsessed with it, writing me letters, talking to me about it continuously. My perfume was a talking point that I was unwilling to give up, even if I no longer enjoyed or noticed it. Take that as you will.

Such a beautifully green scent: the crisp cut stems of the roses still bleeding, that delicious blackcurrant stem & blossom freshness. It's a cool, dewy, misty mood that envelops you in a cool girl embrace, nonchalant but a statement all the same. I love to wear this on my skin with a coat or knitwear that i've been wearing Roses with. It makes me think of my great grandmother & her rose garden, and i think she would be pleased i'm thinking of her 180 years later.

This fragrance is wandering through a shadow-drenched rose garden on a dry summer night, fallen petals all around heavy with dew. The air around hums with the dark, green bitterness of cassis and blackcurrant leaves. This scent in its achingly poetic intensity was an immediate purchase for me It's almost cinematic, like new, brooding love unfolding in the setting of a twilight-bathed, abandoned plot of damp soil. Haunting and equivalently profound in performance.

Fresh, clean, feminine, juicy, with a hint of flirty but not generic and childish. I can see an elegant young woman wearing that. Opening is more floral, but it sits more juicy and sweet. The sweetness is not like candies or fruits; but more of a "fruit flower" kind of. You can smell the black currant but in a floral, leafy way; not fruity and candied kind of a way. I really like that, worth purchasing. The sillage and longevity is low for the price tag tho.

L’Ombre Dans L’Eau / Eau de Parfum is a stunningly green, realistic and almost wild interpretation of rose. Instead of sweetness, it opens with a vivid burst of blackcurrant leaves: pungent, tart, vegetal and almost crunchy, like snapping a fresh stem between your fingers. The petitgrain adds a citrus-woody brightness, while the rose gradually rises from the green shadows - bold, naturalistic and beautifully untamed. Elegant, unusual and deeply evocative.

My second frag from Diptyque. I dont know why but upon first spraying I didnt really get it, its too green! but after a while on my skin it become more and more nice each sniff, very fresh and green! I use it as a daytime scent think its pulls character without being too offensive and it last longer when I use it for golf driving!!!! everytime the wind blows, the scent is swinging nicely around so so so nice i really like it!

Smells like a thorny bush of pink roses n the morning dew. I'm usually not a huge fan of rose-centric fragrances, as I often find the syrupiness overbearing. This however has a distinct greenness that cuts through the rose, which evokes the thorn, the leaves, and fresh cut stem that altogether marries beautifully with the sweet beautiful rose. Love love love the artistry behind this fragrance, but will never be my signature.

Huge blast of green. Very strong green vines with black currants mixed in roses. I could smell it when I took the wrapping off the box. This one is a strong beauty. I imagine this is how The Secret Garden smells. Heard it was Lauren Bacall’s signature. Smells sort of like the Baies candle, or the long ago discontinued Black Currant from Henri Bendel (HB wasn’t this green). Since those are candles, it’s different on skin.

I wore this for my wedding that was supposed to give fall British countryside inn vibes and this was the perfect complement. The black currant stands out immediately to me, and then it leaves a green floral on the skin. I wear this throughout the year. The diptyque associate recommended it to me when I came in to buy l’eau rose. I can see sister similarities, but I don’t think it’s a safe blind buy
