Heathens, Cowboys And The Santa Ana Winds

I hate comparing everything that is sandalwood-forward to Santal 33 because it’s not the first perfume to ever smell like it does, but unfortunately its popularity makes it the easiest thing for people to imagine when describing such fragrances. If I can makes the first comparison easy, then Im fine with the 2nd being slightly less accessible, but this smells like a mix of Santal 33 and Entre Genres from Infiniment Coty. Of all the Santal 33-likes (ugh) Ive smelled, this is my favorite. I love me a beautiful tea/citrus twist to the DNA, and this would be my first pick if I were looking for something like it. My 2nd would be Energetically New York from Zara. I dont actually care for Santal 33. The other two? Bangers. ENY Elixir, while it lasts all day, is linear. I happen to be okay with linear perfumes, so take that as you will, but I’m just saying that’s what youre getting by being the cheapest of the S33-likes. HCatSAW is very complex and multilayered. Green & Tea notes at the top, into a mid of woody citrus, drying down to a musky suede base. It retails $160. I’d give this a 9/10. The tea is every bit as prominent as the sandalwood. What fades is the green palm leaf aspect of it which was also gorgeous. It then settles into a unique muskyy suede base thats quite comforting. this is great for all year wear

Ok I've been taking my sweet time with this one because every time I had it figured out, I didn't. I feel like I could read the insert description by heart at this point. I've been seeing discourse online about what it smells like / why it's the longest name in history so I feel it's my duty to chime in: So the scent/name is inspired by LA in the wild 80s, which I love: HEATHENS (aka the Jack Nicholsons who attended the club it's inspired by), COWBOYS (signifying the wild west, and you can tell how reverently they refer to the owner of the club, Helena, throughout the site etc - I feel like she's the cowboy inspo here) and THE SANTA ANA WINDS (this for me sums up the actual scent the most, it's like all the best parts of LA flying in on the breeze, with an undertow of all the debauchery). I really just love it. I think after really processing it for the last few months it's now my favorite of the bunch. It's green, but sweet. Light, but lasting... addictive... but mild?!?! just all the things and not too much of one. It's perfect imho

My first review! This has been my signature scent for around 3 months, and I wanted to hype it up. I'm still new on my fragrance journey, but this has stuck out of the many things I've smelt so far! It's grassy, sweet, and warm to my nose. It's green, but not in a dark plant sort of way. It makes me think of a warm sunny day outside with long grass and shady trees. Inoffensive and easy enough to wear, yet unique enough to have something different from everyone else around you. Out of the discovery set for Discotheque, this and Lola were heavy competition with each other (the others are great too, but I'm not a huge violet fan, which a couple of them had). But I chose this one to lean away from the gourmand trend, but if you like a more white chocolate sweet, check out Lola at the Coat Check. But I love Discotheque's vibe and vision for their fragrances, so I recommend checking them out!

this one is really something. i have fallen in love with discothèque but heathens, cowboys, and the santa ana winds specifically feels like it was crafted to suit my preferences perfectly. cardamom-forward without being boring. instead of leaning into the spicy side of cardamom (which don't get me wrong, is still there and aided by the wood notes), the sweet grass and tea notes lift it and amplify the green-ness that tends to get lost or at least downplayed in a lot of cardamom fragrances imo. the grounding musk base note really comes out in the drydown. the result is a slightly soft, warm green scent that is definitely and appropriately evocative of LA. it's very sexy, but effortlessly so imo. like you've got a little secret and if we meet up later maybe you'll share it. maybe a bit dirty, maybe even messy. how i imagine stevie nicks smelled in 1986. 10/10.

Unique, distinctive, soft spicy, warm, sweet sandalwood forward fragrance. The opening is quite striking, with the green, slightly sweet, slightly aromatic blend of notes like sweet grass, palmarosa and tea. The cardamom gives it a certain edge, while the amber and the suede ground the scent. Like most of Discoteque’s scents, Heathens, Cowboys and The Santa Ana Winds smells on the unique side of perfumery, while retaining a very alluring, attractive scent. I think it’s fairly versatile season wise, but leans more feminine. Moderate longevity and low sillage therefore I wouldn’t upgrade from my travel size to a full bottle. It’s really a beautiful perfume, too bad it’s such a soft scent...

I just got this scent in today. I was in between this one and baise moi, but I decided to for this. First spray was incredibly sharp and it got in my nose in a weird way. I couple hours later I came back to put it on and didn't get that effect again and I loved it! It is super green and raw but it feels so realistic. Its like sitting outside on a slightly breezy spring day. After it dries down its this great soft amber scent that's just cozy and warm. The sandal wood s not overwhelming or pickley at all unlike santal 33. I think it is a great alternative to that, but its much more of an interesting scent. And just a plus it is already my most complimented scent! Good sign

whenever we talk about the drought in southern california, someone inevitably contributes, “well, it IS a desert, after all.” but the Los Angeles basin is not— was never— a desert. we are a chaparral, and if you know where to look you can still see (and smell) the native sages that cling to the coastline. “heathens, cowboys” gets this right; that is to say, it is not a desert fragrance. this is glamping, not camping. it goes on quite green, very sweetgrass-forward, with something sharp coming from the cardamom note. it transforms beautifully as it dries down, with tea leaf, sandalwood, and amber emerging— a hippie with a day job.

I’m slightly fanatical about this house and have been slowly trying to add most full bottles to my collection. Heathens was my latest addition. I MUST PROCLAIM I think this shall be my summer scent for this and maybe every summer to come. It is sOo masterfully blended. The way the tea note and grass first hit my skin is q magnificent, then the way the sandalwood is unusually in the middle, like it’s just passing through and bringing you to the warmest yet lightest ambery base. A masterclass in how to make a green/sandalwood fragrance feel one of a kind.

This one is something special, I originally got it because i was looking for something with Hotel California vibes but ive come to appreciate it on its own as a great spring/summer scent thats not aquatic or citrusy. The combination of tea, sweetgrass, and palmarosa add this green characteristic that manages to be fresh, a little spicy and just enough sweet. Rest of it has this dusty sun baked leather aspect. After a longer try though I've decided its not for me. Its a bit too soft so im going to try and see if Cowboy Grass is more masculine.

saw the hype for Lola, bought the sample set (adore the packaging) and i like this one even more than Lola. i really smell the sandalwood and amber, and the suede/leather note smells slightly smoky to me, but like an incense smoke, not a fireplace or cigarette. it's musky but not intensely masculine. unfortunately it didn't last too long on my skin, gone by the end of the afternoon, but honestly it was delicious and i would buy more.

This is a mesmerising fragrance that perfectly captures the balance of wild and calm energy / city and nature of Los Angeles. From my first spray at Selfridges, the fresh notes (my favourite being the tea) created an airy brightness, just like the real city’s morning haze before the sun shows. But the warmth of the woods mixed with the rest is what really drew me in and made me fall in love with it enough to get it.

if jazz club and santal 33 had a baby it would be this fragrance. leans more masculine which is what i was hoping for. absolutely love it. can’t 100% gauge longevity yet because i just got it but have had it on a couple of hours and still smells close to as strong as when i first sprayed it. this scent is my new go to cologne. i’ve already gotten a couple compliments

obsessed with this smell, I wear it everyday and always get stopped. The notes blend in a way that feels unique, my partner now wears this ALL the time. I find it a sweet but fresh / musky smell and I layer it with Call for a Good time and its just the prefect blend. I have to find my partner another scent so we don't smell the same. I am tempted to try Eye Contact!

lush, steady, rolling. smells a gust of wind blowing through hill after hill of tall prairie grass. there is a stable-y quality to this musk, but it doesn't render as indolic or, in other words, shitty. this is just beautiful, leathery, and warmly dusty. probably my favorite out of the set

This scent is just beautiful 😍 I am not sure it smells like anything I have ever owned before. Reminds me of the hot ground at dusk. Ethereal in nature. Starts with strong cardamon which I like but the dry down is the best part🤩🤩 vanilla and green smells. Divine

LOVE THIS. People comparing it to Santal 33 aren't wrong, but imho it's BETTER--it's less linear and I love the opening-to-dry down progression of this vs. the Le Labo. It's complex and sophisticated, but also youthful. This will get you laid.

so many images! red sands, desert storms, old wooden tea bars. This scent works on so many levels, it genuinely smells dry and dusty but has this distinct sweetness and sharpness most likely brought out by the cardamom. i feel dusty and cool

Like rootbeer with a wedge of lime at first, drying down to a softly spicy leather, powdery white musk vibe.

I had to take my time writing this review because I just got this overpowering cardamom scent and I couldn’t smell anything else. But after a couple wears I have started to grow fond of this. More creamy wood have shown itself to me, and a warm cozy suede. It actually feels a bit too creamy when I expected warm dry desert winds and sand. But that is just based of the name, and how I percieve Los Angeles and Southern California. A lot of the notes in this are notes I don’t really know, so its hard for me to tell you exactly how they play out in this, but after a couple minutes I do get some slight tea note. But that is a green unsweetened one. Probably herbal and organic, just as a cali-girl would! But let’s get to the good part. The drydown in this??? A creamy heaven. Almost to the point of being vanilla-esque. The cardamom is still probably a bit too dominating for my liking, but I know a lot of people love that, and in this fragrance I am joining that hype train. I would initially say that this is male leaning, but I think most would say it is unisex. And like a lot of the other Discothèque fragrances this has a great longevity and sillage. Try it! Try them all. I have loved the journey they have taken me on. And the concept with playlists for each scent, and a night club description has been refreshing, fun, playful.

I grew up in southern california and went hiking in the chaparral often. the most predominant scent of my adolescence was sugary brown sweetgrass and dusky oak and dry, sunbaked earth (and if a fragrance exists that smells exactly like that, let me know IMMEDIATELY). Heathens is not at all earthy but the sweetgrass is there, carried by a breeze through the open window of a spa. Don't expect desert aridness from this fragrance. the opening is fresh and herbal, slightly creamy, and the cardamom stands out! it smells like cool lotion drying on your skin while the air stays hot long after dusk. weirdly about an hour or two in it becomes really sour on my skin, which would be a dealbreaker if it didn't mellow out to a nice ambery musk soon after. I honestly wish it smelled like the opening the entire time. probably better in the summer time... will return.

I forget how this smelled but I remember approving. I think that says a lot. (I will try it again soon and update) I spritzed this all over before leaving the house and heading to the tram stop. Walking in drizzle and near gale-force winds, all I could smell was this perfume. Passing people on the footpath, I got a few double-takes. Hopefully they were reacting to my sillage, because I felt confident and proud to smell so good. On the tram the sent began to fill the space around where I was sitting, until someone sat nearby and let his pungent generic cologne overpower this. It did retreat down to the skin after a couple hours.

This came in the Vogue advent calendar and I like it. To me, it's distinctly a tea scent with a lot of greenness. It seems very crisp. I get the sandalwood/other woods but they don't overpower the balance. I'm not sure I'll wind up wearing this, as it does lean masculine, but I'll like smelling it from time to time. It's a good scent! I like it more than I should based on the notes🤔 Later on, I'm getting the cardamom, too. Dare I spray this in my bed tonight since I'm changing my sheets tomorrow?⏰ I dared.

Strong cardamom tea opening which I quite enjoy but then come the greener grass notes and I get the bathroom in a club vibe. This passes quickly though. It might be my nose but I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the others. Edit: I tried this on again and it’s smells so much better. Smells similar to Santal 33 but with added tea and grass notes giving it a green edge. So funny how sometimes you react to a scent differently trying it on again on a different day. This is like a warm spicy, ambery sandalwood scent. Heathens is very unisex and I do find it to be reminiscent of Santal 33, I enjoy that profile and I do enjoy this!

Sharp when spraying but quickly softens to a warm woody/grassy mix (definitely savanah vibes).

green, then astringent. i think it's the amber again. so powdery. i do get the woods and whatnot, but again with this line, smells like an older woman. I don't have a reference point for what some of these notes smell like in real life, never held palmarosa to my nose, but look to the accords, swap green and woody, and move the powdery up a bit. that's what this smells like. this would probably smell good if you're on a summer walk. the scent lives up to the last part of the name, don't know how else to word the sensation other than windy. if i think about it really hard i can actually smell the suede, but honestly reads more like old leather. kinda like when you walk into a shop that sells vintage leather jackets. all in all, it's very multidimentional but not something i'd wear too often.

Imagine eating marshmallow sweets in a pine cabin with a pitch roof on a warm day- that's the experience this scent brings to mind for me. After the initially strong smoky tarmac-like hit, it settles to give a hint of tar, warm wood, and sweetness. Once it settles, the sillage is quite contained, and though the slight spice sweetness can last a while, the longevity of the interesting bits is not very impressive. It's OK, but not my favourite from the sample set - I'll use it up, but I can't see myself going for a full bottle of this.

The first hour or so of this is overwhelmingly green. It feels like I'm being fanned with palm leaves by doofus boytoys who don't realize they're hitting me in the face. The dry down and fade is warm, pleasant amber scent. It wasn't quite deserty enough to evoke LA the way it was trying to.

The initial spray is a hit of sweetgrass smoke, with an odd, papery aspect. It quickly mellows down to a sweet sandalwood scent that stays close to the skin on me. The opening is quite jarring in comparison to the pleasant dry down, so it's not something I'd purchase a full bottle of.

I like the notes in this one but it's powdery like most of the other Discotheque fragrances. I wish it wasn't so powdery!

Smells like sitting next to an elderly couple in an old wooden bar where they still smoke indoors, maybe good for occasions like an outdoor festival/event, would not risk wearing this in warm weather or in already stuffy places as it is quite suffocating.

I’m not the biggest sandalwood fan but I really do enjoy this. It’s sandalwood, smoky tea and cardamom. Spicy but green. Performance is decent, it’s pretty unisex, price is too high. I’ll enjoy my samples but wouldn’t buy a full bottle.

That is very green! It starts overwhelmingly planty and herbal. It does soften into a more resinous stale smell. This one is not for me.

Truly disgusting, doesn't smell like anything LA or southern California unless the club theme is meant to tell you that this perfume smells nothing like what's described and everything like a musty, crusty club at 6am. Do you want to smell like a 60yo man with peter pan syndrome and who thinks perfume is a replacement for basic hygiene. I got the sample pack too and honestly could make a similar review for each of Discotheque's perfumes - they all smell very similar and are VERY strong and overpowering, so not something you should blind buy.

Smoky, green, sharp, and rancid. That beautiful cardamom does not save it from the stinging pungency that lingers from the very first spray. It smells like unwashed bootyhole. I do not like this stinky-ass bitch whatsoever, but it feels correct in its representation of LA and LA nightlife (even in the city's most recent incarnation). 2/10. Discotheque does a really good job at fragrance storytelling and I love the cardamom in their scents, but this is not a safe blind buy.

I have a chronic gut disease and thjs genuinely smells like when i shit myself and its clotted blood and gut puss... literally had to scrub this off me while gagging

Blind bought this on a whim after reading the notes and being charmed by the marketing from the house, and can say I am totally captivated with this fragrance.. After first spray, I somewhat understand the comparisons to Santal 33, but I find this far more compelling.. the sandalwood here is sharper and sultrier, dirtied around on the floor of wooded field land and grounded in musky suede. All of this is brightened up by the presence of green tea and sweetgrass, like a menthol buoy floating atop a river of creamy amber. Spicy and astringent after the initial spritz, it quickly settles into a smooth and beautifully comforting skin scent- one that is fueled by equal parts familiarity and intrigue. Both heady and mild, resinous and refreshing... I already see clothes strewn over the floor due to this one. An instant love.

Beautiful sandalwood and soft resins, blind tested this and got just enough cardamom for it to smell like an exotic spiced cake, but not overpowering (this note can be, here it's just barely there but noticeable.) The leather is soft, overall resinous sandalwood, very unisex and very delicious! I'm getting Tom Ford noir extreme vibes, only because of the soft cardamom kulfi feel. Definitely a niche house I'll have to try out.

This is such a complex scent. I don’t hate it, but I definitely have never smelled anything like it. On first spray, there is note of pepper to me. I can also taste it as well...the pepper note. Then it settles on the skin to this beautiful amber musk...that’s sweet. I will update again.

Got this brand's sample pack as a gift and this one is great; woody, dirty yet muted leather with a bit of dry greens. I could see how on the surface people would compare this to santal 33, but unlike that fragrance, this smells good and not like a poopy barn.

I think this stuff might be radioactive. My housemate says it smells like the inside of a polytunnel. It sends my tastebuds a little haywire, as though I’d had Szechuan peppercorns. I think I like it but sometimes I think it smells like burnt cafeteria food.

This is so pretty and unique. It’s in the same family of Byredo Bal d’Afrique - green, slightly sweet, slightly powdery, inoffensive and carefree. It’s smooth and versatile, you can go from the office straight to Coachella haha.

for some reason i actually really prefer the breezy freshness of the initial spray. the dry down unfortunately just smells sweaty to me, complete with a weird sourness that smells like a cleaning product and not in a good way :/
