D&G Masculine

Some time ago I got a 4mL sample of this for a couple of dollars. I bought it at the same time as a few other fragrances and promptly forgot about it, as it got lost amongst the Manhattan-Island-like collection of 100 and 50ml bottles on my bedside cabinet. A few days ago I rediscovered the vial and really tried it for the first time. I remember trying it when I first got it, but being a bit precious about the tiny bottle, never actually put enough on to fully experience it. Giving myself a generous splash along my forearm and wrist I belatedly experienced the fragrance as it should be experienced...and what a pleasant surprise! At the moment here in the southern hemisphere it is spring. Dolce and Gabbana Masculine captures springtime (and perhaps early summer) perfectly for me. In particular, it evokes a spring morning in my cedar-clad house, when it has rained gently just before dawn. The sun is warming and drying off the orange blossom. A fresh breeze is blowing the freshness of wet foliage and blossom through my window. Truth be known, I planted the citrus trees too close to the house (about 5 feet away), which can be annoying (especially when lemons and oranges knock against the windows during autumn and winter storms), but the blossom wafting through the house at the moment more than makes up for it. This fragrance is a subtle blend. The citrus opening is not harsh, but is balanced with fresh notes. Unlike some fragrances, the citrus top notes carry on a long time throughout the life of the fragrance, the bergamot and orange blossom combining perfectly to achieve this. The floral and wood notes become more obvious as the citrus eases somewhat. This fragrance is gentle. It is at heart an old-fashioned gentleman’s cologne livened up with citrus and herbs. It is polite: there is nothing sharp or unpleasant about it. Just like a fresh spring morning which warms and ends in a languid afternoon.

I shouldn't like D&G Masculine. Just out of spite, if nothing else. Cause it made a fool out of me and taught me a good lesson in modesty by embarassing me big time. When I saw the D&G Feminine/Masculine pair hitting the shelves in 1999, I thought something like "Come on D&G, are you THIS out of creativity? Is this the best you can do to hail the new millennium, launching family perfumes? Where's Bambine to complete the joke?" And I was laughing with what I thought was funny. And then I was given two samples... And I shut my big mouth and felt like an idiot. For D&G masculine had the last laugh. Cause upon applying it, it was as if someone had torn down the drape depicting a bleak winter landscape, and allowed the magnificent Mediterranean panorama to shine. With its ancient waves gently lulling all sad straits, and with a glass of cold homemade lemonade waiting on a old iron table, in a garden full of herbs, under a pine tree. This is the happy star of male fragrances. It's the most optimistic specimen of bliss and the most productive "silly smile" generator in the masculine scents' world. Although it may sound a bit inconsequent coming from someone who calls himself Le_Coeur_Gothique, D&G Masculine is a joyous slice of sunlight, and the best mood modifier I've ever ecountered. I guess even gothic hearts need a joyous slice of sunlight and blue devils kicked square in the butt every once in a while. And D&G Masculine proved itself as a terrific kicker...

Well I’ve got an Italian clone of this that probably would beat the original. Incredible fragrance. It’s hard to like and I didn’t like it much at first and thought it was like brummel. But through the first day I ended up spraying it more than twenty times and it wasn’t until the second day that I really got this scent. I would say it’s a little similar to green Irish tweed and silver mountain water. There’s something very modern and something very primitive in this scent. Simplicity and depth. I don’t know if this is better or Green Irish tweed but it’s definitely up there. I can for sure say I like it more than silver mountain water. You can get the clone very cheap in Italy. Just commee to Italy! Let’s just put it out there max gavarry, a god from grasse has made the most Italian scents ever. Let’s put this out there too. Dolce and Gabbana by Man was also made by none other than Max Gavarry. I rated this as a winter scent as well as a summer scent because I used about 25 percent of this in the heart of winter despite having Antaeus and Lapidus. Maybe I’ll get the clone of pour homme too since they seem to have better performances and apparently it’s closer to the original.

I remember giving a box to my ex (the love of my life) in the early 2000s and it became his signature scent for years. Sadly this perfume was discontinued for some odd reasons, at the same time our relationship ended. But I would randomly smell it on men afterwards, which would ultimately take me back to Greece where he came from, next to the sea and his father’s lemon tree and olive gardens. This perfume oozes the Mediterranean coast, it’s fresh and floral although being enormously masculine at the same time. I have ever since tried to find something similar and the closest perfume I can recall was one of the Acqua Di Parma perfumes. I do not remember which one it was but it was a pretty close match. I hope D&G come back to their senses and relaunch this beautiful classic as well as the other female counterparts, such as “D&G Feminine Dolce&Gabbana for women” and the lovely red velvety (my own signature scent between 1997-2005) “Dolce&Gabbana for women”.

A citric perfume with a splendid woody drying, deep but not heavy at all. It was my signature fragrance in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I got too many compliments when wearing it. It is unfortunate that it was discontinued but luckily I was able to get two bottles that I keep as a treasure and I only use it on special occasions. It really is a wonderful fragrance which I have not found any replacement. For me, a masterpiece. Un perfume cítrico con un secado esplendido amaderado, profundo pero nada pesado. Fue mi fragancia de uso reiterado en los fines de los noventas y principios de los 2000. Obtuve demasiados cumplidos cuando la usaba. Es una desgracia que la hayan descontinuado pero, por suerte, pude conseguir dos botellas que conservo como un tesoro y solo lo uso en ocasiones especiales. Realmente es una fragancia maravillosa la cual no he encontrado reemplazo alguno. Para mi, una obra maestra.

one of my favourites. If you don't get it then you haven't worn it enough or that you have bad taste. This is really deep. And only people with mature noses can get it. Max Gavarry had massive bullocks for coming up with this at the start of the new millennium. This is really good.... Either my favourite Max Gavarry scent or my second favourite just after Pour Homme. Get yourself a clone. Oh yeah and it's his final refinement to Brummell.... the difference between this and Brummel for me is like the difference between Antaeus and Aramis... they're very similar but I hate Aramis and I think Antaeus is the best scent of all time. I hate Brummel and I love this one. Brummel is his first masculine and this is his last. Definitely underrated since most people talk about By man and not this one.

If you want an exceptional clone then I highly recommend 'Eclat 716 EdP' I have the OG and it's incredibly hard to tell them apart I'm not connected to Eclat in any way, just sharing the love as I looked everywhere for an alternative and actually found a link to Eclat on another members recommendation for Gucci Envy (for which they have another awesome photo realistic clone!) I live in the Uk and they ship from Germany very quickly via DHL Hope this helps someone out who is missing this incredibly fragrance

It is a complement getter. Made as right as a perfum should be. It has a citrus with reach component which will make everyone to fall in love with. I believe reaches should be coming from sandalwood ? May be. But it is the one to choose if u r looking to impress women ( all ages) at summer time. As best always discontinue ( or reformulated) it has been discontinued ! Sadly. Luckily enough to have one. I don't use it. I will keep it to best occasions.

Not really into D&G commercial fragrances, I think they're really ordinary and lack of originality. But I did love this perfume, I still own 1/4 flank. It's a real pity it's out of order, they should really think about to reupdate that and do a nostalgia-commercial operation and resell it again. It was a nice cologne, great at its debut with citrus notes and even batter at bases notes (musk and vetiver were great in this fragrance). 8/10

Simplistic citric/herbal + white musks. Very “soapy out of the shower” type thing. It’s almost aquatic as pointed in the manual of perfume making of the 90s. A product of its time, some might say. The reason why it’s been hyped for a good 5 or 6 (or more) years now is beyond me. It wasn’t a “success” then, when it was widely available, but it is now, when people want to show off their “exclusivity”. Go figure.

This is one of my all-time faves, but I admit that I am "slightly" biased having worked for the creating company for nearly 29 years. This fragrance has what I call a raunchy, disjointed elegance when first applied, but pulls together and becomes quite smooth and "whole" on the dry-down. I have never had a negative comment while wearing this fragrance, people are ususally quite intrigued with it.

For some reason, My favorite cologne of all time. I really wish they would start making this again. Im saving what little I have considering I'm not spending 300 dollars on a little bottle from eBay. Classic. For me, the best of the best. Number 1. PLEASE COME BACK 2 Day or night/ summer or winter. So many compliments from this. Its best once after 15-20 mins. Really starts to shine. LOVE

It has been a long time since I last smelled D&G Maculine - 10 years or more? But I remember loving the kind of bergamoty citrus that D&G was, which has since been discontinued, and now I love TDC Bergamote. I think they might be very similar and worth a try for those who miss D&G. Would be interested in a sample of D&G Masculine if someone has some to spare or swap.

Loved this scent -- Sturdier than most 'citrusy' scents, unique, fresh, appealing but subtle. Reminds me kind of either Pour Homme by Dior or Monsieur Balmain by Pierre Balmain. Wore this for years & years, always got loads of compliments. All-of-a-sudden it's hard to come by, & the price skyrocketed -- then I come to find out it has been discontinued?! WTF??

Nose Note #298 In the same direction with Cartier Declaration and Loewe Agua de Loewe. Bitter bergamot, vetiver. But here it's sothened and spiced up with petitgrain, orange blossom and clary sage. Less spicy than Declaration, perhaps more spicy than Loewe. Performs alright. It's kind of a common bergamot fragrance, but I fell in love with it.

Wore this in college and held memories very well. Reminds me of sunny college lifting sweating partying days.. a happy scent that also boosts alpha male confidence. Smells dated but not old.. in the same way some creed fragrances smell dated but not old.. maybe it’s the petitgrain.

Quite chemical but oh so nice! D&G Masculine perfectly takes an old school masculine concept like Eau Sauvage and transforms that into a modern, fresh, uplifting, friendly and slightly sweet fragrance. 8/10 Edit: Found its niche counterpart: Osaito by M. Micallef.

I still cry about not having this gem anymore :-/ A gem Masculine citrus just a handsomely scent if that makes sense. It was my signature cologne until it went away overnight. I even went to Italy to look for this with no success.

Unforgettably intense and gorgeous! Very herbal and unmistakably masculine scent. It lasts at least 6 hours on my skin and the sillage is perfect. My best friend loved it on me.

This is one of my favorites, worn all the time, but, sadly, it has been discontinued. Would anyone here care to recommend an available replacement with a similar makeup?

Revisited this today and had a flashback - wore this a lot circa 2005-2006 when I was living and working overseas and it was initially a blind-buy at duty free. A great citrus fragrance - but it smells like citronella. If you’ve ever lived in the tropics or endured an Australian Summer you’d be familiar with the use of citronella to repel mosquitoes. It’s popular because it’s a natural product, cheaper than other natural insect repellents like cedar and sandalwood, characterised by its powerful, distinctive citrus note. Many years ago, in 1989, while living in Tahiti, I almost died from Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever, which is similar to Ebola (also a Haemorrhagic Fever) which was the single most terrifying and painful experience of my life. A repeat infection with any of the four strains of Dengue will be fatal. As a result I am paranoid about mosquitoes and take extreme measures to keep the little horrors at bay, so in the tropics always used copious quantities of citronella. Even though D&G Masculine doesn’t include citronella that’s what it reminds me of. Presumably the effect of bergamot and petitgrain? Masculine is a pleasant, inoffensive, citrus dominant fragrance, and since Eau Sauvage was one of my first loves, I have always been partial to a nice citrus. D&G Masculine does what it does well - and, unlike most citrus fragrances, longevity is respectable, the woods and musk supporting and reinforcing the central theme through to the dry down. It’s ideal for the office, sport or the gym seems to please most people, and performs well in Summer

I agree with the comments that D&G Masculine is a warn citrus scent perfect through late spring into late summer. The top notes that you can smell is bergamot, petitgrain and Orange blossom. What's unique to my nose is the aroma of Myrrh or honey which must be the caraway when you first spray it. The aroma changes and settles to an excellent jasmine, clary sage mid tone. The base notes of teak wood, and musk make this fragrance a really good masculine cologne.. perfect gem. Overall, I don't know why D&G discontinued this cologne. If they consider a revival of this fragrance, they would benefit. The new fragrance's tend all smell similar not like D&G MASCULINE. Perfect during the daytime and not heavy or offensive. I wish I had picked this up several years ago, I would of used it a lot more. Longevity is at least 6-8 hour's moderate. Sillage is enough to be moderate Very fresh, warn and clean scent. I have had several people compliament me, they ask me which new fragrance is it. When I tell them it D&G that came out in 99' they are shocked. I would recommend it to those who enjoy a different frag that isn't too sweet and are open to something old something new now if you can find it. 10/10

just like the name on the bottle , the best lemon citrus smell with masculinity and other sweet notes, i already have a 100ml bottle of this and found a shop near me that still has 4 100ml bottles of this stuff still in the display cabinets , this stuff has been dicontinued sadly and what left remains is still selling for top dollar , my shop sells them for $75 , ebay sells them from $80 upwards plus extra with shipping , think im gonna go buy all the bottles at this shop i found HAHAHAHA well guys gals , i went back and to my surprise there was only two 100ml bottles remaining in the shop so i bought both of them , damn i love this so much sweet lemon tangy musky smell , if you see this in any shop dont think JUST BUY IT !!!!

this was a true classic i remember when you could pick this up for around 15 pounds in discount shops like wilkos and bm bargains now people are bidding over 100 to get there hands on this its a shame it was discontinued as i loved it and its also the reason i own beckham instinct as its the closest thing to this out there atm its a real shame because this was one of d&gs finest compared to the piss weak recent offerings really hope they come up with a decent mens frag soon because its a shame to see a good brand decline when theyve been more than capable of producing a decent fragrance

I was originally gifted a bottle of this from a friend in college and instantly loved it. It reminded me of a cologne sample in a National Geographic issue on ancient/past colognes and perfumes and Masculine smelled just like the one for Napoleon (to me). Others have said it has an "vintage" or "classic" scent and that is very true. It's a shame that it's been discontinued. It's a great woodsy/citrus for the late spring and summer, and I loved it for high heat days. Currently nursing the bottle I have, looking for something similar to replace it as soon as it runs out.

Unique, gentle and timeless. A scent that i had almost forgotten about ... but decided to revisit in search of a good summer scent. And i was overwhelmed by how pleasant it is. Opens with citrus ... subtle yet long-lasting ... mixed with fresh herbs balanced perfectly ... joined by jasmine, fig leaves ... and concludes with woods, white musk and a hint of vetiver. A truly amazing scent ... perfect for a summer day .... well balanced and fun to wear. A true gem!

I remember this fragrance from a great holiday in Malta. This was my summer fragrance in that period. Just a fresh pleasant citrus fragrance that gained so much compliments. Now i see almost every brand with a citrus type of cologne. This fragrance is way better than Pour Homme Intenso and all the light blue flankers nowadays. If i was Dolce & Gabbana i should release Masculine and By again.

I saw the 100ml of this in a store for $30! So of course I had to buy it, a D&G fragrance for that price...it had to be mine! I got a tester and I wasn't overly impressed at all by the scent. I never wear it but I still like it. It smells very vintage like all 90's fragrances, it's not very fresh scented but its okay. Citrusy and VERY green. I'd recommend it for older gentlemen.

I pick this for mid30's professional types. It's a very professional smell. I tried but was not particularly phased by it. Smells nice, seems plain, then I remember it's 11years old. At that time this may have been unique. I tried at the same time as Chopard pour homme, I prefer Chopard.

It's just not my cup of tea/ I used to love it so I sprang and bought a bottle but although it's the same scent, I guess my taste's have changed. I have one on eBay right now that is almost a full bottle, 3.4oz. My eBay username is jimbomon.

this is the best that dolce gabbana has ever made and is now so rare 100ml bottles sell for $150 - $200 . even 50ml and testers cost insane . please bring this scent back to us and start making it again damn it .

great lemony smell, drydown amazing, masculine, fresh, a little woody but still light, it's perfect for spring/summer, for wearing as a daily fragrance. I definitely gonna get this one!

I didn't appreciate this when I was younger. I remember liking the '94 Pour Homme & By Man much more. That is no longer the case. All 3 are great!

I still have a tiny bit left, its, pretty basic to be honest, definitely not worth the price anymore, its good, just a vintage scent, its heavily lemony, the notes list id say is accurate, i used to wear it a lot when i was younger, didnt realise it was worth so much and discontinued otherwise I wouldnt have sprayed it so haphazardly, id say if you want the fresh out of the dryer scent this is that, its clean, nothing risky.

I think this was an excellent fragrance but the two of us just didn't get on. The opening citrus notes were gorgeous but, alas, I was just left with a claggy mess on my skin once those top notes faded, and they faded quickly. If only I'd known how much these go for on eBay nowadays, I would have tucked the bottle away! Edit: turns out the culprit is the petitgrain. Ruins perfumes on me.

The 90s and early 2000s were quite a great time for Italian fragrance houses. Versace gave us The Dreamer and Man. Armani made the hit Acqua di Gio. We even got three masterpieces - Gucci Pour Homme I & II and Envy for Men. Dolce & Gabbana however, were no slouches either, giving us the great Pour Homme and the good, but vastly overrated By Man. Masculine by D&G is the infamous one. It's been quietly forgotten and relegated to the history books as yet another also ran. What little I've been able to find about this one has been quite mixed. It was released in 1999, as part of the cheaper D&G range. It's a citrus/woody aromatic scent with a quite pronounced green element. The opening is a crisp sour citrus. I get lots of natural bergamot with a big hint of petitgrain as well. It's balanced nicely and smells decently natural. The heart is a cacophony of aromatic notes. I get hints of mint, clary sage, a touch of orange blossom and hints of herby basil. It's a quite green combination, a bit earthy and it's interplays perfectly with the opening. The base is fairly uneventful. Some non-descript woods and a bit of white musk. At this stage it's a bit synthetic, but it really isn't too bad. Compared to chemical bombs like Light Blue, this is much more natural smelling. I can perhaps imagine why Masculine failed and was quietly forgotten. At a time when Armani was blazing away with Acqua di Gio, D&G released this. A ballsy citrus scent, that's infinitely wearable yet also quite dated actually. At it's core Masculine is an old school citrus scent. It shares more with Armani Eau Pour Homme, Acqua di Parma Colonia and Dior's Eau Sauvage. Not so much that it smells like those, but more that it's in a similar genre. D&G's Pour Homme is 5 years older and smells more modern in comparison. However, Masculine does smell quite timeless. It's just not very modern smelling. The bergamot is sour, the structure of the fragrance is quite old school barbershop-y, but at the same time it's such a fun and compelling scent. I sometimes see threads looking for Italian citrus scents. This one does capture that. It does have a distinctively Mediterranean feel to it, even if it's not distinctively Italian, it does make me imagine nice summer evenings and the lovely Italian outdoors. Of course, there is a trade-off. As good as this is, it brings nothing new to the table. I would surely not pay vintage prices for this, but at a decent price it's a damn nice citrus scent. Longevity is surprisingly good - 7-8 hours. Rating: 8/10

I have no idea if this was reformulated at some point but my bottle is quite old. When I first tried it I didn't think much of it; couldn't smell much of anything. Perhaps the top notes had diminished over the years somewhat. The other day I knew I wasn't going to be able to pay much attention to what I sprayed on, so I reached for this one. I didn't get much of anything, though it was only a spray to the chest. A few hours later, I was getting wafts of something that smelled really great, and then I realized it must be this scent! It seems like the wood and fig notes were largely responsible. I can't think of another scent I have that can produce this really nice effect. At one time I would have gladly sold this one for $20 or so but now I am going to hold onto it. If it disappoints me in the future I may change my mind of course, but I'm hoping the "magic" continues with it.

I remember buying this at a drugstore for like €20/€25. I was probably 15 or something. Just realizing how crazy that actually is why would a kid so young buy a freaking cologne for himself. I wore this at school and at the end of the day while walking back home this kid said that I really smelled good I was very surprised that he could smell it after so many hours. This made me never forget about this perfume. 20 years later I found and bought myself a bottle 🙂. The smell is very simple yet elegant, citrus heavy with the leafy notes giving it backbone. I was wearing this the first couple of days buying it. And yet again, outside after a long day of wearing....my wife while walking near me says the cologne you have on really smells good which one is it. How great is that, in don't know what they put in fragrances back in the days but longevity is muy excellentoo.

This smells almost identical to lemon pledge but it's not half bad! I'm very picky when it comes to lemon, it either has to be very natural smelling or blended with another note and this one mixed with light woods, tonka bean, musk, and vetiver make for a very masculine drydown. I enjoy it on my casual days and its great all year around with great sillage and decent longevity (4-6 hours). I read that this was released for a younger audience some years ago but I see this for anyone over 21+ since it is very masculine and smells more on the mature end of the fragrance spectrum. The best way to describe this scent is imagine D&G Pour Homme without the pepper, blended with Obsession by Calvin Klein. Together, they'd create the fresh, woody, lemony, and masculine D&G Masculine! Haha, I guess thats what the name entails.

What an amazing cologne this is! It's a dance of woods: the teak and cedar here are sublimely combined with caraway seed and sage, mint just noticeable. The musk is light and enveloping like a tender embrace, subtle but persistent. Attractive as only a mature, confident man exuding charm from all his pores is! A man one could only think as educated, sensual, demanding and at the same protective. The Alfa and Omega personified, someone who lives without need to assert himself in life other than by his mere presence. A dream translated in scent notes, this cologne is pure class and allure. I wish more gentlemen wore it around... not minding to go weak at the knees if they passed me by!

This is a case why I know they employ pretty women to sell you goods. I really didn't want or care for the fragrance, however yes you guessed it. I ended up with this, wore it once, where it just smelt of bitter gone off lemons, green and woodsy, after trying to justify to myself that I had bought the fragrance because I liked it and not duped by the dolly bird at the counter, I finally after nearly 2 years came into acceptance that I was had succumb to wildly charms of the female of the species. So off it went to my wheelie bin! I had a funny feeling the wheelie bin is female as I got a distinct impression it was laughing at me!
