Velvet Amber Sun

I bought velvet amber sun blind, based on reviews since I’ve been going through an amber vanilla phase as of late. This is it. This is the one. When I got my bottle it was very incensey to begin with. Today as I write this review something really strange has happpend. I currently have Amber Absolute on one wrist, Velvet amber sun on the other. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been smelling both or my juice has started to oxidise. Today the oud has really come out. It is that resinous, syrupy medicinal type oud that I love, it’s very similar to the oud accord in M7. Anyway, out of all the popular ambers I rate this the best. Better than Amber Absolute and Ambre Sultan which are very incensey, powdery and dusty. Better than Grand Soire which can get overly gourmand and sweet in the base. Velvet amber sun has the perfect balance of incense and sweetness. Maybe testing AA and amber sun together has thrown my nose off but it’s really highlighted the oud in here. The other resins such as frankincense are there too. The opening is spicy but not overpowering. The dry down has the vanilla coming through in enough amounts to sweeten the other notes but not to the point where it becomes the main star like in grand soire. It remains resinous throughout but gets smoother as time goes on. I think if you layered Grand Soire with Amber Absolute you’d get something close to Velvet Amber. I’m not one to say stupid things about perfume, but this stuff is actually spiritual. Out of my vast collection, during this winter, this is the scent I want on my wrist just to sniff even just at home. It’s so comforting. But it has a so much complexity, and goes through so many stages that I never get bored of it. Once my 150ml bottle arrived I instantly ordered another one. I want this juice for a lifetime. It’s that good. If you can get your hands on it, you like amber vanilla and oud, get it. You will not be disappointed.

My god. I am truly in love. It's like old books and pudding and sprinkles of amber resin. On initial spray it feels rather masculine, a dry woodiness.... But after 30 seconds or so it's true beauty unfurls! It becomes increasingly warm, cosy and inviting. And as time goes on, it becomes sweeter, creamier and gourmand. The incense is devine and mixed with the creamy vanilla is just pure harmony. This perfume creates the most intoxicating, delicate and beautiful amber I have ever smelt to this day. It lasts 12 hours and just makes me melt! I think there is some interesting pheromones or some magical nonsense in here because it honestly drives me crazy (in the best way possible), but also and VERY weirdly.... Drives my cat mad for it too LOL! I had sprayed my shirt with this and later when I went home, my cat (who is usually VERY sensitive to any smells and hates them at that) was all over me, he's usually incredibly shy and doesn't show any physical affection, but he would not leave me alone- headbutting me and dribbling all over my sleeves where I had sprayed! It happens every time too. I once found him rolling all over a blouse on the floor that had been sprayed previously. Anyways, I'm sure I'm smelling the same thing he's smelling. Divinity in a bottle. Also makes you attractive to some cats apparently. EDIT: Okay guys!!! For those who adore this fragrance but can't afford to shell out the £260 for 50mls, I have discovered an ALMOST exact replica!!!!! 100mls will set you back about £160!!!! So you're getting double the amount of perfume for just over half the cost. Found it last month in Venice airport by- The Merchant of Venice; Ottoman Amber. I own this D&G already but as soon as it runs out I'm going to buy Ottoman Amber instead, the dry down is literally the same. Thank me later. ;)

Absolutely love this one, on my top 5 amber fragrances of all time, up there with Amber absolute, Ambre Nuit, Grand Soir and Ambre Nobile. This has to be one of the most richest smelling fragrances I've ever tried, it's so deep and light at the same time. It exudes quality, in fact it is so rich and natural you will find insects attracted to you and other creatures. Best not to wear this in the Jungle lol. Whatever they are putting in this fragrance, it has significant pulling power. This is stated as pour homme by D&G, you can see this on the packaging. Amber Skin on the other hand is pour femme, so I'm thinking the colour of the bottle caps signify the gender (I could be wrong). Honestly though I think this can be worn by all genders, the opening is very masculine (sharp and smoky, almost makes me sneeze lol) and the dry down is this creamy smooth silky vanilla/Cadbury chocolate gourmand dream. The opposite sex absolutely loves this scent, so if you're a guy looking for attention you should pick this up. Performance wise this is beast mode and then some, no more than 1 or 2 sprays required. Lasts 24 hrs on me and I can smell it on me the next day. However projection goes down after the 8 hr mark and after that it stays within 5/6 inches from the skin. Price is very expensive, but I believe in this case you get what you pay for. I got myself the 150 ml which will last me forever and comes in this wonderful velvet box - presentation is amazing. This is a 10/10 fragrance, but please sample before you splash the cash ;)

@SmellMyCheese Pegged it perfectly... You spray this on and like when you spray on Amber Absolute you are like "Ok here we go!!! THIS IS WHAT WE TRAIN FOR!!!" and with Amber Absolute that is exactly what you get... BANG BANG BANG!!! In your face and brash... And I LOVE it... But... With this you think you will but you don't... I mean it seems like it is going to be that way at first spray and a minute later there is a shift... It's not soft but it's not angry and trying to beat the hell out of you like Amber Absolute anymore... This is WONDERFUL juice... I am an amber lover through and through and own a lot of amber fragrances and I didn't own one that fit this spot until getting this bottle... After that first minute it is a softer and MUCH smoother version of Amber Absolute while not smelling exactly like it either... I mean it is that type of amber scent but it has this lovely airy quality to it... It's... It's mysterious... I just can't explain what I mean... It begs to be experienced... Get yourself a sample if you can and put a spray on the back of your hand... I think you'll understand what I am talking about while I can't quite say it... I am very happy to have it in my collection and the presentation (bottle and box) are to die for... Perfectly unisex...

First wearing of Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Amber Sun, part of the higher-end Velvet collection, not sold too many places. It’s a robust amber vanilla blend with a very sensible mix of sweet, smoky, balsamic, and even a little bit of animalic vibes. It’s quite deep and rich with a good amount of complexity and nuance, so I do not regard it as a great introductory amber-centric fragrance. I get the sense that great care was taken in its creation so it’s immediately one of my favorites in the genre. I place it somewhere between the sweeter Tom Ford Amber Absolute, one of my absolute favorites, and Profumum Roma Ambra Aurea, more to the smoky/animalic side and also excellent, albeit not as great as Amber Absolute, at least to me. But the quality is great, right up there with others like MFK Grand Soir and Absolue Pour le Soi, Rania J Ambre Loup, among others. Again, the line seems difficult to find and the only point of sale I found (for the US) is via the Dolce & Gabbana website at $310 for 100ml, in EDP Concentration, so not terribly high at just over $3 per ml, but a 100ml size only is a rather limiting option. Overall, I love it and wish it were more accessible but am happy with a decant for now. 8 out of 10

Divine!! For those looking for a resinous, warm, ambery, balsamic, rich, deep, moderately sweet vanilla dominant perfume, you can’t get better than Velvet Amber Sun! I had the chance to test it today in Rinascente and from all the perfumes I have tested today, Velvet Amber Sun it’s the only one that is still vibrant on my skin 8 hours later. It smells rich and intense still, hours after and its absolutely intoxicating! Bear in mind that I have tested Orom by Bvlgary and Gingembre Petillant by Versace, some strong fragrances as well, but on me Velvet Amber Sun seems to be the most intense! I am impressed and I want a bottle. For fall and winter weather, a scent like Velvet Amber Sun it’s exactly what I need!!!

Wow... this was my first impressions of this luxury product started right from opening a box. It's like Russian Matroska, there is a black paper box then inside another black velvet box then you see the bottle. I give D&G a 10 this was one of a kind presentation. I rarely see something similar when buying $$$ for niche fragrances (Creed please take notes here ahhaha). The color of the fragrance is so beautiful, dark red amber just perfect. After initial spray I couldn't believe how close resemblance it has with MFK Grand Soir. MFK GS is one of my all time favorites so getting a 150 ML bottle of Amber Sun just made my day. Fragrance 8.5/10 Longevity 7/10 Price 5/10 (150 ML bottle of course)

First impression so take it with a grain of salt. I tried this on skin along with velvet skin fully expecting to like velvet skin more than this. I liked VS more on the tester, but this is why you always test fragrances on skin and don't listen to the people trying to sell you perfume. On skin this develops with way more harmony than VS. The resins come together really nicely with the labdanum and other base ingredients. One of the better ones from the prive line. The perfumer voelkl whipped up a good scent. Need to test further to see if the hype is real, but based on my initial reaction, I'd say it's justified. Lasted on skin through a shower, still faintly present.

Amazing scent! I just picked up a new bottle after finishing my first 50ml a few years back but I never forgot how good this was. Velvet Amber Sun is a complex fragrance with a plethora of notes but it still remains perfectly balanced providing an overall feeling of elegance & sophistication. The oud is ever-present though always underneath a delicious layer of vanilla custard, spices such as cinnamon enhance the overall scent profile creating something truly delicious. A must try for amber scent lovers. FYI I have an old batch (150ml bottle) so I cannot speak of any reformulations in recent years.

Had a sample from the D&G Italian Market at Harrods and it reminds me of Tom Ford Noir pour Femme but bit more rich and succulent. It has a delicious warm note of myrrh which reminds me of a Solemn High Mass, then it burst into the sweet vanilla and sandalwood mixing in with the myrrh, like incense rising up and taking you with it to heaven. The sillage is longer and dry down scent of Tonka beans and myrrh is delightful and envelopes you in a heavenly scent of smoke. Definitely on my Christmas list this year, unless D&G would like to surprise their loyal fan with one. ;)

God velvet amber sun is so amazing! It reminds me of those long hot los angeles summer days spent at my pool. I can really smell the ylang ylang in it which I rarely can with other perfumes. A sample of this is hard to come by unless you're comfortable walking into your local d&g and decanting one yourself. I would have never found it otherwise. Luckily you guys have me here to tell you that it's a safe blind buy! Just take my word for it. This is a special beauty.

In the same realm as other Amber scents, such as Blonde Amber, Grand Soir for example. This has its own distinct character though. A cozy, warm, ambery and vanilla scent with a hint of spice. It doesn’t ever go too sweet due to the heavier woody notes in this one. Great scent. However with having other fragrances in the same realm I can’t justify paying for a full bottle of it right now.

This fragrance is top tier. Opens up with a very warm Amber, and dries down with Vanilla and Cinnamon. You will get 6-8 hours of longevity out of this with a heavy sillage. I do not think it is discontinued. Just extremely limited. Especially in the US. Was on a waiting list for it. Only available at select D&G boutiques and currently available on their site as of 12.16.23

Very close to Amber Absolute, this 1 maybe a tad bit sweeter. Yesterday was Memorial Day and everyone told me I smell like chocolate cake. 3 sprays from a decant and this last all day and night. Suitable for both sexes but you have to love deep resinous scents. Off topic Dapper Fragrance has an Amber Absolute clone that's pretty spot on also at a fraction of the cost.

Vanilla Amber perfection. Got a 150ml for a steal from fragrancebuyca. Definitely similarities to the Amber Absolute DNA, but way toned down, sweeter, and more wearable. Do yourself a favor and wear this in the heat. Watch it open up, project, and leave the most intoxicating sexy sillage behind you. One of my favorite Amber frags without a shadow of a doubt!

Loved it. Great in The bottle, better on The skin. My hubby and doughter said it smells like vanilla icecrem, what a grown up dessert then. Sultry, creamy and velvety. Magnificet on a man or a strong and confident woman. Can not stop to smell My wrists. Stays relativly close to The skin. Comforting soothing and soo sexy.

Just like Amber Absolute, just a little sweeter at the top, which makes it more unisex than AA. I’ve only had the chance to wear it once, and I sprayed quite a lot of it. I could smell it on me for a few hours but didn’t receive any comments about it, and I was around people all day...

I disagree with this being linear. It definitely goes through different stages. This has to be tried on skin. Best way I can describe this is a sweeter Grand Soir with smoke and oud. It’s a deep, rich, thick, amber, vanilla with smokiness Absolute stunner Leans Masculine

This is fantastic, however as I own Initio's Absolute Aphrodisiac and they smell so similar, its not one I will be buying until that is all used up. On clothing the amber pulls through more, on my skin smells the same as AA. Gorgeous fragrance.

The dry down of this smells exactly like a scent memory I have from being a kid in the 70s...incense smoke permeating the air of our church mixed with my mother's ambery perfume. A wonderful scent memory!

It is a rich, linear, smooth, resinous, Amber, Incense, Vanilla scent. If you love Amber scents, then this is a safe buy. The value is good for 150ml on discounters.

I love how this smell on my skin when is not humid. The smell of smoke blends well and make like a warm gentle barrier around me.

This is TF's Amber Absolute just as I remember it. Try layering it with Mojave Ghost.

Where can I get a decant of this? The price for a bottle is outrageous!

So trying to think of the most interesting story to describe this fragrance... Imagine you walk into a old ice cream shop, wooden counter tops though everywhere, and it smells like they are burning some incense. Maybe even when they make the ice cream they have to put it in oven for some reason... So when you order youre ice cream you are basically given a choice. Do you want your ice cream in a wooden cup, with a amber spoon, or do you want a amber cup, with a wooden spoon. Whatever sounds more interesting to you. So lets say if you were to pick the amber bowl. You get your ice cream in a sorta see through amber glass, leaning towards a red plastic almost fruity color. You take your wooden incense spoon that each time you put it into the ice cream it starts to melt the ice cream, smoke is coming off filling your nose now, and even melting the amber glass into the ice cream. As you eat more ice cream your wooden spoon is become charred and even now they are black wood specs that have burned off into your ice cream. And plastic nibbles of a amber learning towards being a fruity color. Of course you could switch this with say its the wooden bowl that is melting the ice cream slowly and your amber spoon is slowly then turning into smokey amber sprinkles, almost a touch of syurp, or honey specs on the ice cream whatever works for you. Sound good? Well there is one problem.. Like I said I do smell a plastic, rubbery, sorta fake fruity kinda amber mix that some fragrances has. Also keep in mind when this was first served to you id say imagine someone old served it to you. So it does have a pinch of smelling kinda old imo. Thankfully this beginning doenst last to long. But for a fragrance that is so much money if I don't love it, it seems hard to justify. There is a lot going on in this fragrance though so what your nose might pick up on might vary. When it smells good it smells good,and I actually really enjoy the smokey feel to it since it makes it seem more interesting to me. I can sorta see the amber absolute comparisons but is small. However its certainly more than the amber sultan comparison i see mentioned for me personally although that I suppose I can pick up on as well in its own right. But again theres a lot going on here so what your nose picks up might be different. Performance was fine.. although if you consider the price perhaps disappointing.

I've sampled this one a handful of times. I do like it but it's a bit too close to Fantome by Les Elixirs which I own and like more. I've found myself liking patchouli more and more. And it's apparent here upon first spray. A rich ambery patchouli beautifully mixed with warm resins. The vanilla adds sweetness, which on my arm, takes center stage fairly quickly. But with those other warm notes mixed in just behind. It's very good. I personally think it leans ever so slightly masculine. A cold weather scent for sure, very warm and smooth.

A good alternative to the discontinued Amber Absolute. While not containing that same bold and slightly dirty incense note, the overall feel is quite similar. I do enjoy this fragrance quite a bit, but there is a bit of a strange mustiness through the life of the fragrance that takes some time to get used to. I’m not sure if that speaks to the quality of the Amber accord used, or if it was done intentionally. In any event, it’s an enjoyable experience, and worth sampling if you don’t already own the aforementioned TF

Is the velvet collection being discontinued? Now theres only a couple listed on the site. If thats the case glad I got a huge bottle of this. Unless there is a site error? But im searching and even finding the velvet collection on the official site is a pain in the ass and when you do, only a couple of them are listed now. You know when I was in Japan as well thinking about it, no store had these last time which was strange because Japan was on of the few places that unlike America I could find these at.

@sauce god Yea I havn't seen it anywhere since I was in japan much earlier this year. But when I was back in the fall it was already gone when I went to go look again, so seems yeah I guess it is discontinued from what youre saying. Bummer. To be honest I was gifted it so I'm not even sure how much my friend paid for it, but I was like omg you didn't have to buy a big bottle thats to much. But lucky/glad to have it all the same.

Similar to Amber Absolute but less strength on the herbal and an added smooth vanilla. Definitely fits the theme of a velvet style amber. It doesn't project as heavy as AA does, but I prefer that personally. Great stuff that can be found for an amazing price discounted compared to its contemporaries.

It's deep, warm, smoky, ambery and sweet. It smells somewhat earthy, spicy and resionus. Similar to Tobacco & Tonka by Banana Republic but this one isn't as sweet. It's smokier, spicier and has a leather quality to it. Very sensual and rich, creamy and buttery. Great for a night out.

Yea I do see this listed on the site as well now again even though it was gone for seemingly a year.. I wonder if there was a reformulation? While traveling again no store seemed to have it that I saw still so im surprised that its now being listed again on the website.

Has anyone smelled this recently? Looking at the dolce and gabbana website and others they reworked the note break down and it has a different one now. Curious if it smells different now, but seemingly from reading at least it would seem this one has been reformulated.

Velvet Amber Sun offers a modern twist to the very classic Ambre Sultan accord. It is a little more musky and powdery, but you will recognise the signature of Serge Lutens' famous best-seller ;-)

Good smell, but not wow. Sweetness with amber, Good for occasional use and not my type. Has lot of hype.

Warm, resinous amber, very slight spices, slightly Coca Cola, and a vaguely sweet smell like lick. I don't know what that is, some ambers gave this vaguely uncomfortable sweet scent in there. Sillage seems to be a little better than Velvet Amber Skin, and I like the resins. Not certain I'd want a full bottle

I really enjoyed the opening of this scent. But i smell something animalic in dry down which was not my favourite

Rich, heavy perfume that can be overwhelming. Stong vanilla and resins.

Opening has a very prominent black pepper accord sitting atop some nondescript woods and vanilla sweetness, underlaid with warm balsamics. Dries down into a fairly simple amber, similar to MFK Grand Soir adding a light dusting of cinnamon and the remaining pepper. I think the cinnamon is a good complement, but that harsh black pepper sticks out like a sore thumb amongst an otherwise soft and warm mixture of sweet accords. My nose also tends to get an unpleasant sharpness from benzoin. Moderate projection for 2-3hr, longevity 6-8hr.

Blind purchased when I found some available because it came so highly recommended and I've got to say the "fragrance community" is full of it. Smells like a vanilla ice cream store that ran out of sugar yesterday so they lit their incense drawer on fire instead. Opening smells strongly of incense smoke with a hint of dry vanilla in the background, with wear the incense fades so the unsweetened vanilla is more noticeable. Projection and longevity aren't important because it doesn't smell good but it does last. Not a complex fragrance, it's really just the two notes, maybe I'll get more with use but there's an opportunity cost to wearing something that gives a poor first impression. D&G made the right call by not continuing with the Velvet line if this was widely regarded as one of the best

Based on the notes and descriptions, I expected to love it. I almost bought it blindly on Ebay! Fortunately, I tested it and found that I don't need it at all, even if it were gifted to me. On my skin, it is extremely boring. After an hour of dull amber, it transformed into an equally dull vanilla. Do not blind buy. It smells on me like a $5 Amber Cologne (Israeli no-name) that my friend gave me to test.

Frank Voelkl did an amazing thing with Amber Sun just like he did with one of my favorite Le Labo Ylang 49 so I'm suspecting he's a fan of ylang-ylang. This is an Oriental Woody that when I wear it makes me feel like I just left a temple in India full of myrrh and Incense some Vanilla making it melt in your skin absolutely gorgeous, was expecting more ylang maybe some floral but overall it's smoky balsamic and smooth D&G should've named it Amber Naked or Amber Silk, it's very smoky warm and spicy the vanilla is like a custard dessert making it a bit too warm for summer so it's not a fresh scent, I'll have to see how it wears in the Summer. Reminds of: Givenchy Indecence hands down! Boyfriend by Kate Walsh Don't blind buy if you don't like any of these above. If you are a lover of myrrh smoke and vanilla with lots of warm spices this will do.

This is a good, dry, sooty, amber. If you own Tauer L’air du Desert Marocain, or maybe even TF Amber Absolute then you’re all set. Tauer, in particular, is just perfect, created by an indie perfumer who is creative, talented and such a nice person. This D&G Velvet Amber Sun tries all the same moves but why bother? Get the Tauer. EDIT: ok, coming back to say that if you find TF AA too powerful or Tauer LAdDM too dry & gritty then maybe try this. It is a pretty nice dry woody amber that’s a bit more polite and easy to wear. Less potent than others I mentioned but definitely nice. Easily unisex; very cozy in the cold weather.

For the price, I’ll stick with Juicy Couture’s “Glistening Amber” for the same profile, effect, and even performance (😏) for a fraction of the price. I love a good deep, rich, and resinous amber scent profile complemented with sweet vanilla and a hint of incense or smoke as much as the next guy but this is wildly overpriced. Thank god this isn’t super readily available because with my impulsivity, if it were I might’ve jumped the gun and blind bought it. It’s certainly not a bag fragrance by any means but it was remarkably underwhelming for me.

Had to come back and say this is my fav Amber central scent of all time, it’s basically Amber Absolute without the insence and more sweet dense Vanilla I love pairing this with vanilla perfumes, it warms up the vanilla and makes it less sweet, more thick and Smokey Perfect for colder weather, scent trail is amazing Opening can be a bit harsh with the spices but when it dries down Ambery, vanilla, Smokey, spiced, syrupy, honey’d, slightly powdery. Coca Cola heaven.

This will be short and to the point, personally I think this is possibly the best scent ever! It’s like sex in a bottle, warm, rich, notes of amber, vanilla and I seem to get a little honey with the smallest notes of wood and oud! An absolute delight. Can’t speak any higher of this scent simply amazing, The Mav score Performance-10/10 Scent-10/10 Value-10/10 This really does stand alone, haven’t come across a scent anywhere near as good as this.

Let's start with something nice, the bottle is beautiful. If you're going to buy this fragrance the best way to use it is to seal the cap with super glue and expose the bottle in your living room. Don't ever try to spray it. it's sweet it's synthetic it's not well blended, every note seems to go its own way and the worst, it has monstrous longevity. I've warned you stay away from this.
