Velvet Rose

The new 2014 fall release of Velvet Rose is something of an enigma, in that I don't quite understand why it was released as a fall scent. To me, it is the essence of summer with its' soft citrus, Lily and big, beautiful full-bloom roses. It is a very soft scent, as the name implies. The top notes are lovely and fresh with just a hint of the roses that are sure to bloom, and bloom they do, although quite gently. This blend of three different roses and the pelargonium is a quiet medley. Nothing bold or loud or in your face. More of a whisper. At this stage I cannot detect any musk. After about thirty minutes, Velvet Rose turns into a skin scent. The sillage is soft to begin with, so this would be an ideal rose for those who want to foray into the realm of roses, as it soft, modern and easily wearable. It does have a bit of a powdery smell at this stage; that of a finely milled, expensive dusting powder, which is really quite pleasant. I do love this fragrance, but as with many of the newly release scents, its' staying power is disappointing. It lasts on me a little over an hour, which is a pity, as it is expensive at $250 and because the fragrance is simply and utterly beautiful. Because of the longevity, sadly, I have to rate this beauty a 4/5.

Velvet Rose is like having drops of heaven in a bottle personally delivered to you by an Angelic gentleman caller that wants to woo you. Or if an angel doesn't happen to have a free night maybe someone from Bulgaria instead. In this past year I became somewhat obsessed with finding a rose fragrance that didn't smell like potpourri smothered with soap powder and instead captures the real essence of fresh roses. My search is over- I've found The One. I've made a few of my own concoctions using essential oils but they lack the "muchness" that I was looking for. I agree that it's rather subtle and stays close to the skin so you would do better buying a small perfume oil instead of a spray. It's also not complex at all- it's all about the rose oils with notes that compliment the roses that I would compare to a pop star's backup dancers Velvet Rose is elegant and truly timeless

I think this is what Rose The One was supposed to smell like, but they were too busy cheapening and commercializing... So far the best European (as opposed to Oriental) [almost] pure rose fragrance I've tried (and I've compared it to quite a few niche ones)!

I ordered ten rose scents from Scent Split and this was by far my favorite. It also had zero longevity, not even an hour and completely disappeared, so unfortunately it’s a no for especially for the price. I usually prefer an edt but even this is too light. I love the bottle too, I never get lucky enough to like the bottle of my favorite scent. I really like this bc it’s a true rose scent but the velvet smooths it out. Sometimes true rose can be a little screechy. The velvet balances it perfectly without it being too much of what a call a dark/nighttime/masculine scent which sometimes the word “velvet” can imply.

I had high hopes for this fragrance but it is just an ok and I am glad I didn't blind buy it. I smell ambroxan in the base mixed with some other musks. The citrus is very strong in the opening and while the rose is nice it is a bit linear and dull without much movement. This is a going to the Dr office perfume. I will use my decant for that but when it's gone I will not mourn it.

Just received this perfume in the mail today, and after so many good reviews, I'm very disappointed. The smell of rose is there, however my refined nose is smelly mostly a synthetic rose. Si rose has more of an authentic rose smell in my opinion, less 'filler' smells. This perfume does not smell bad by any means, however I do not think it's worth the price.

I'd call this a hardcore rose fragrance. I think someone who is particularly into the rose-note might say that it justifies its rather high price - the rest of us would probably have doubts. In this, the rose is just totally raw - no sweetening - it's sharp & tart and slashes at the air into which it diffuses with a keen olfactory blade. To my mind Velvet is not a fitting appellation for it! It's a very breezy fragrance also. If I don't sense tarry labdanum and gloopy musk, and all that kind of thing, I instantly have grave doubts about the longevity & projection & that sort of thing. But I know with my reasoning faculty that a perfume does not have to have those former qualities in order to have the latter. But I also know it's going to take longer to decide it's quality if it doesn't have them. Anyway, I've had this on for a while now, and it seems plenty robust forall it's lightness & breeziness. The musk fits the rose & citrus notes like a key in a lock, so that it doesn't stand-out as a distinct note. And then I could smell it on the bedsheets without having sprayed any directly on them; and then - what I would say is the ultimate test of decent longevity - there came a point at which I thought "I'm beginning to get just a little bit weary of this!". I think that point ought eventually to come with any decent fragrance (not being properly weary of it - it just occurring to you momentarily that you wish it would just go away !) ... and with this, it did come ! ( Eventually .) But as I said, a rose fanatic might really rate this; and it certainly has that certain quality that I'm fond of calling distinction : basically at my very first spray of it, my instantaneous reaction was "this is not as other perfumes" (ie as perfumes in a more standard price-bracket), by reason of that sheer keen-ness (or would it be keen sheer-ness ?) that I mentioned at first; but to me it just doesn't deliver the heavy guns quality that a higher-end fragrance ought to; and by this figure I'm not talking about sheer heft - I'm quite aware that a high-end fragrance can be a light one - but rather ... just that quality of boldly & frankly declaring itself a serious quality item ... of esconcing itself in all its splendour ... it just seems not to do that for me at the end of the day. I think this actually is what perfume-heads tend to call a very sheer fragrance, isn't it. Maybe that's the subconscious reason for using that word so many times in this review!

Imagine a big bouquet of red roses that you see from a bit of a distance in a hotel ballroom at a wedding reception. You move closer and closer to the bouquet on a table and as you get near enough to detect the scent and touch the petals you discover these are not natural roses but artificial and made of plush velvet! That's exactly what Velvet Rose by D&G evokes; for me anyways. Opens with a lemon fresh citrus top note. The citruses are very delicious but not fruity. They are instantly suggestive of lemon scented rosebushes or rose petals and also peony or pelargonium, the latter which is note in the formula. Pelargonium is quite rose-like. There's also something like red wine in this scent, a drop of red wine. This is all about the roses. There are notes of Bulgarian and May rose. It smells of pink and red colored roses. If you don't like rose fragrances, then don't bother. It's a big fragrant rose queen. That being said this is a linear and very soft scent. It doesn't overwhelm you or take you aback. The perfume can feel more like a light body mist but it last as long as a good perfume should, on me over 4-5- hours sometimes 6. It is fresh and floral with rose so it's suited to spring and summer months as opposed to cooler/colder weather in winter. This is highly feminine, mature, womanly, motherly, romantic. This is good for Valentines Day when you wear a pink or red dress and go out on a dinner date. This is so beautiful and yet wearable, nothing crazy or statement-making. This one simply says pretty rose. The dry down is a clean musk that turns into a very nice body lotion or rose cream. It's so good on my skin and makes me feel like rose petals have been on my body in a bath tub scented with rosewater but much denser and heavier with velvet-musk, soapy and sophisticated, with an intoxicating and inviting fragrance as only the rose can project. I am not sure if this is available in any store today even Macy's. I bought this online on eBay and feel saddened that it's not as readily available as it was a few years ago. Rose Perfect

I had such high hopes for this one. The name alone promised so much, and the bottle? Absolutely Stunning. Unfortunately, the scent didn’t live up to the fantasy ... It’s incredibly light, weak and basic. While it has a delicate, floral essence, there’s not enough depth or character to appreciate it. Even drugstore body mists seem to last more than this. - Bhavna Darira Chesan

Someone told me that this would be a perfect wedding scent and it's quite true. Very appropriate for the June/July white affair or some similarly romantic affair - the musk makes it interesting. But so so expensive!

The longevity of this perfume is very disappointing and the price it is expensive !!

Doesn’t last all day pretty rose smell . Almost like a real rose . Like it
