Il Marinaio da Capri (The Sailor from Capri)

A spring day on a Mediterranean beach! Notes giving off bright nuances. like vacation postcards of happy times on the shore. It opens with gardens of neroli and bergamot, light and sunny. Juicy fresh citrus, and honeysuckle for the dunes. Pastel clouds of oakmoss/vetiver/patch. With the sea represented by ambergris and seaweed. A scene of carefree beauty . . . a landscape captured by an artist with delightful colors. Transitions leaving a musky vetiver afterglow. Unisex. Sillage soft, longevity good.

This perfume reminds me of Cedre Blanc, except I like this one better. It starts off with a slightly bitter neroli and moves smoothly into the honeysuckle and Jasmine mid, and I detect some sweetness here. Not a lot, just a touch. This is my favorite part of this perfume and is where it beats out Cedre Blanc for me. The woody notes, vetiver, and patchouli are smooth, making this perfume balanced but interesting. It really does have a shine to it. I do wish it had slightly more projection, but it does seem to last on my skin quite well. I think this perfume would work well from spring into fall.

This honeysuckle opening, sea breeze heart, and potent animalistic+resiny musk base is: a modern and novel artistic interpretation of expressions of other perfumers throughout the ages back into antiquity. I smell French traditional styles represented in the florals, and Italian traditional styles being represented in the coastal sea breeze and foliage accords. It's even evocative of the most ancient Persian, Mesopotamian traditions (The birthplace of perfumery) in the intense animalic musk base, even though this is achieved here mainly with ambergris, which apparently didn't become used in perfumery until the 10th century. Yet all this is presented in such a new olfactory expression. I'm convinced, every time I smell this, that this perfumer intensively studies the art of other perfumers, and is contributing their own unique version and creation here of a mosaic of time-worn perfumery templates. This is a great example of what's so incredibly cool, for me, about Indie perfumery in the United States. There's really no traditional identity associated with US perfumery, so the perfumers explore the art with a kind of transcendent freedom. This is the exact opposite of an 'everyday dumb reach'. This is a pièce de résistance artistique. Bravo.
